  3. Chapter 185 - Report to Urbano

Dear Readers,

Due to a temporary website issue, starting around April 3, all novels started before January 2025 will be temporarily moved to the drafts folder for approximately 3–4 weeks. Unfortunately, this novel is included in that list.

In the meantime, I will be uploading the latest advance chapters to my Ko-fi account for my supporters. Regular updates will resume as soon as the site allows.

Thank you for your patience and support!

I wonder how Urbano, that incompetent double-chinned guild member, is doing.

I am shown to the second floor of the guild, and theUrbano I meet after a long time is quite different from before.

First of all, he has fewer followers. Additionally, his clothing has fewer decorative accessories. Although his body shape is hidden by his clothes, he seems to have slimmed down somewhat. Perhaps his face looks tighter as well.

His face looks firmer.

More than anything, his expression is significantly different from when I first met him.

“Oh, Kenji! It’s been a while.”

“It’s been a while, Lord Urbano.”

Urbano’s greeting is normal as well. Previously, he had a disinterested demeanor about his work, but he has changed considerably.

“Today, I come to report on the joint project with the church that Father Nicolo entrusted to me.”

“Oh, it’s about the church. I’ve heard from Father Nicolo, but you are the one who receives the practical explanation. Yes, please report.”

In reality, the matter is settled between Father Nicolo and me, but it seems Urbano thinks he is the one who finalizes the discussion, simply passing the practical details on to me. There’s no problem with that, so I don’t correct him.

“We have agreed with the church that deceased adventurers will be buried in a communal cemetery on church grounds, and I will be in charge of managing the roster and funeral schedules for that.”

“Hmm. I know that. What of it?”

That’s just how Urbano is, and while one might question what that means, I have no complaints about it.

Even though a communal cemetery has been established for burying deceased adventurers, usage isn’t permitted without limits. If weapons and bodies of the deceased are buried without consideration, the limited land in the town’s cemetery would overflow in no time. Since the customs regarding funerals differ between adventurers, many of whom come from rural areas, and the city, it’s necessary to provide explanations through the church.

Furthermore, the number of staff that the church can allocate is limited, so it’s necessary to discuss the roster and schedules while coordinating a reasonable budget and personnel to a certain extent.

In principle, this work belongs to the adventurer guild, but since I want to investigate the causes of adventurer fatalities, I’m taking on the tasks under the pretext of writing a report.

“I’ve also heard that the treatments for adventurers conducted at the church are yielding better results. I believe I can provide you with a report on that in the near future as well.”

In addition, injured adventurers can now receive treatment at the church more easily, albeit for a fee. “Easily” means that if they belong to the adventurer guild, they can receive treatment without needing to pay a referral fee, which makes it more affordable.

Previously, after being injured, adventurers often had to wait several days to get a referral to a cleric who could use healing magic, and it was common for the referral to take a while. During those few days, injuries could worsen or conditions could deteriorate to the point of death, so now, the survival rate of adventurers should improve significantly.

In this regard, it’s also beneficial that we can quantify the survival rate of adventurers from earlier under the guise of writing a report. This allows us to demonstrate how much the church’s treatment contributes to improving adventurers’ survival rates through comparison.

There is currently a shortage of manpower to promote development projects, and if we can demonstrate the effectiveness of treating adventurers with quantifiable data, we may be able to consider offering discounts on treatment fees or subsidies for adventurers. This is definitely something I want to include in the next report.

“That’s true. It seems that adventurers are increasing their donations to the church. Honestly, they should also increase their contributions to the guild.”

This means that the adventurers are increasing their donations to the church in addition to the treatment fees. It’s true that the church, which previously excluded them, now provides treatment—albeit for a fee—and buries them in the cemetery when they die. For adventurers who are rootless and come from rural areas, this must be a significant change.

They are a large, uneducated, and rough crowd, but they are all very young; some of them are still children. No matter how tough they try to appear, death and injuries must be incredibly worrisome for them. There’s hardly anyone who doesn’t feel anxious when engaging in a job that puts their life at risk daily.

As I offer vague responses to Urbano’s complaints, I can’t help but pray for some small relief in the daily lives of the adventurers.
