Chapter 31

On the day of the concert, Chen Shu didn’t go to the venue with Yan Jingchuan.

He needed to leave early for a final rehearsal on-site, while Yan Jingchuan likely had matters to attend to—they had only agreed to meet at the hotel.

When Zhang Shi heard this, the phrase just as expected flooded his mind.

He felt he had seen it all clearly.

If Chen Shu was leaving, Director Yan would definitely not sit still.

Before setting off, Zhang Shi deliberately picked up two tickets, planning to surprise Yan Jingchuan, and instructed the driver to head straight to the venue before getting in the car.

Once in the car, he glanced in the rearview mirror.

Yan Jingchuan was sitting in the back, eyes closed as if dozing.

Compared to before the car accident, the usually iron-willed Director Yan now tired easily.

But miraculously, he always seemed to recover after seeing Chen Shu.

The power of love—even Director Yan wasn’t immune to it.

Zhang Shi sighed inwardly and looked away, not wanting to disturb him.

Seriously.

He didn’t have the power of love; all he had was the merciless blade hanging over his bonus.

—

Nearly 8 p.m.

Concert venue.

Chen Shu, you’re about to go on stage soon. Don’t be nervous—just treat it like a regular recording session! He Qiyu was comforting her artist.

Chen Shu’s concert tickets had sold surprisingly well.

Although the preparation period was shorter than usual for a concert, the presale tickets had sold out almost immediately after release.

Backstage, she could hear the enthusiasm of the audience entering the venue and had even taken a peek at the seating area.

The fully packed seats looked lively and crowded, but the dense sea of people was dizzying. He Qiyu’s heart raced after just one glance, and she quickly retreated backstage.

If even she felt this stirred up, how much more so for Chen Shu?

Holding a solo concert so soon after debut was an incredible opportunity, but it also came with immense pressure.

Such a large venue—Chen Shu had to command the stage.

His success so far wasn’t just luck; it stemmed more from his own talent, which had drawn so many fans to buy tickets and support him.

In other words, he had to deliver a consistently strong performance tonight to maintain the popularity he’d built.

Worried that Chen Shu might overthink and affect his performance, He Qiyu added, Don’t overanalyze anything. I believe you’re the best!

Mm.

He Qiyu was watching the monitor and waited a while, but Chen Shu didn’t say anything more.

Huh?

That’s it?

So calm?

He must be too nervous to speak, right??

After all, before this, the only stage Chen Shu had ever performed on was Here For You.

Facing such a huge event all of a sudden, it was only natural to feel excited.

He Qiyu couldn’t help but glance over.

Chen Shu was looking at his phone.

She was practically sweating bullets on his behalf, and here he was, still able to focus on his phone?

He Qiyu studied his expression carefully.

With her discerning eye—

She didn’t detect a trace of nervousness.

…What are you looking at? He Qiyu finally asked.

Chen Shu said, Missed call.

He had just noticed the notification.

It was a call from Zhang Shi.

Which meant it was from Yan Jingchuan.

After saying this, Chen Shu casually called back.

The other end picked up quickly.

It’s me.

Hearing Yan Jingchuan’s voice, Chen Shu asked directly, What’s up?

Yan Jingchuan’s voice was low: You didn’t report to me tonight.

Tonight?

Chen Shu said, I told you—I have a concert tonight.

Yan Jingchuan’s tone held a hint of displeasure: You didn’t report what time you’d be back.

Chen Shu chuckled: I’ll come back when it’s over. Is that okay?

No. Yan Jingchuan frowned. I need an exact time.

Chen Shu then told him the end time: I’ll be back at the hotel about half an hour after that. Wait for me there.

Upon hearing this, He Qiyu, who had been eavesdropping, widened her eyes in shock.

Hotel? Wait for me?

What was going on??

But the conversation wasn’t over yet.

Not knowing what was said on the other end,

Chen Shu asked again: Every day?

Yes. Yan Jingchuan’s voice was firm as he emphasized, I told you, you need to report your daily schedule to me. Once every day.

Chen Shu said: Alright.

Hearing Chen Shu’s immediate and unresisting reply through the receiver, Yan Jingchuan paused, his fingers tightening slightly around the phone. Only the familiar sound of breathing remained in his ear.

This was a silence he was unaccustomed to and rarely experienced.

Chen Shu didn’t let the silence linger: If there’s nothing else, I’ll get back to work.

Yan Jingchuan’s fingers relaxed slightly: Hmm.

After ending the call, he handed the phone to Zhang Shi.

Zhang Shi was still reeling from the information he had just overheard.

Reporting his schedule every day?

Director Yan’s lovesickness was really getting worse…

Did he want to be tied to Chen Shu every single day??

Director Yan, we’ve arrived.

Yan Jingchuan looked out the car window and frowned slightly: What’s going on.

This wasn’t in front of the hotel.

Hearing his question, Zhang Shi quickly snapped back to attention: Director Yan, this is where Mr. Chen is holding his concert. Judging by the time, it should have already started.

Chen Shu is here?

Yan Jingchuan turned his gaze toward the venue, a subtle stir in his heart: Did Chen Shu tell you to bring me here?

Zhang Shi answered truthfully: Well, no.

The light in Yan Jingchuan’s eyes gradually dimmed as he withdrew his gaze.

Meeting his expression, Zhang Shi’s eyelids twitched violently: It’s like this, Director Yan. I thought instead of going back to the hotel first, we might as well come see Mr. Chen’s concert.

Yan Jingchuan’s tone was unreadable: So you went behind my back and made this decision on your own.

… Zhang Shi was stunned. Director Yan’s reaction was completely opposite to what he had expected!

Having chased him all the way here, didn’t he want to see the concert?

Normally, he wouldn’t even miss a chance to listen to a recording or watch him practice the piano!

This is bad.

After all these years working with Yan Jingchuan, this was the first time he had misread his intentions. Cold sweat instantly broke out on Zhang Shi’s forehead.

His mind raced as he tried to salvage the situation: And Wangcai! Director Yan, don’t you really like Mr. Chen’s dog? Since Mr. Chen is performing on stage, it must be locked in a cage. Should I go bring it over?

Director Yan usually liked using the dog as an excuse.

He could only try this last resort!

No need.

Zhang Shi felt a chill run down his spine.

Even that didn’t work?

Wangcai doesn’t like being too far from Chen Shu. I’ll go check on him.

Zhang Shi: …

Even at a time like this, he was still using Wangcai as a shield. Did Director Yan think he would still believe that?!

But since the atmosphere had finally eased, he quickly got out to open the car door for Yan Jingchuan, while also calling He Qiyu to come out and meet them.

Since Director Yan didn’t want to watch the concert, they might as well go straight backstage.

He Qiyu rushed out immediately after receiving the call.

The news that Director Yan had come to see Chen Shu’s concert somewhat overshadowed her shock about Chen Shu’s possible relationship.

When she saw Yan Jingchuan, she quickened her steps: Director Yan!

Leaning on his cane, Yan Jingchuan simply said: Let’s go in.

Alright. He Qiyu, with her staff pass, led the way unimpeded and guided Yan Jingchuan to Chen Shu’s dressing room to sit down.

After Yan Jingchuan took his seat, she hesitantly said, Director Yan, Chen Shu just went on stage not long ago, and his costume changes are quite tight. He probably won’t have time to come over before the show ends…

Unable to gauge the exact relationship between Chen Shu and Yan Jingchuan, she could only choose her words carefully.

Yan Jingchuan said, It’s fine.

The dog carrier holding Wangcai was placed beside the sofa.

Hearing the noise, Wangcai, who had been curled up in a ball, lifted his head.

Seeing Yan Jingchuan, he got up from the floor, raised his front paws to scratch the carrier door, and wagged his tail excitedly.

Woof!

He Qiyu, worried about disturbing Yan Jingchuan, quickly said, Wangcai, stop making noise.

Zhang Shi smiled and went straight over to open the carrier door.

Hey, don’t!

Before He Qiyu could stop him, Wangcai had already darted out of the carrier. A black blur flashed, and in an instant, he pounced at Yan Jingchuan’s feet.

Yan Jingchuan bent down and picked him up in his arms.

Wangcai stood up in his embrace, pressed against his chest a couple of times, then wagged his tail and tried to jump down.

Yan Jingchuan held him back. Chen Shu doesn’t have time to look after you right now. Don’t run off.

He Qiyu’s mouth fell open.

Why did it sound like Director Yan was very familiar with Chen Shu?

Zhang Shi said, Alright, there’s nothing more for you here. Go attend to your duties.

He Qiyu didn’t ask further and nodded, about to leave.

Wait.

He Qiyu turned back. Director Yan?

Yan Jingchuan glanced at her and said calmly, There’s no need to tell Chen Shu I was here.

Huh? He Qiyu was momentarily confused before she remembered to reply. Oh, yes! I understand.

She then looked at Zhang Shi.

Zhang Shi looked everywhere but at her.

He couldn’t make sense of Director Yan’s recent behavior either.

Chasing after someone so persistently yet trying to keep it from them.

The real question was, could it even be kept a secret?

Seeing this, He Qiyu had no choice but to leave directly.

After the door closed, the room fell quiet.

But soon, waves of cheers, growing louder and louder, seemed to pour in from all directions.

Just sitting in this lounge, one could imagine the charisma Chen Shu was displaying on stage at the concert.

Zhang Shi stole a glance at Yan Jingchuan.

Yan Jingchuan was checking his emails.

Since the car accident, he hadn’t gone to the office, handling all matters remotely, which was quite convenient.

But Wangcai kept squirming in his arms, never staying still for a moment.

Yan Jingchuan pulled him back twice, but he attempted a third escape.

Director Yan, Wangcai might be missing Mr. Chen. Would you like to take him to the front to have a look? Seeing Yan Jingchuan frown and put down his phone, Zhang Shi’s eyes lit up as he made the suggestion.

Hearing this, Yan Jingchuan glanced down at Wangcai, who was struggling incessantly on his lap.

This dog only behaved like this when he couldn’t see Chen Shu.

After a moment’s thought, he picked up his cane. Very well.

Zhang Shi smirked inwardly.

Who was really the one missing someone?

Chen Shu was still on stage; even if they went to the front, Wangcai wouldn’t be able to see him.

Besides, there was a carrier right there. If Wangcai was being too noisy, he could just put him back inside.

Turning around and seeing Yan Jingchuan already standing up, he blinked and quickly composed his expression, walking to the door. Director Yan, this way.

After leaving the room, they found He Qiyu again and asked her to lead the way to their pre-booked seats.

Since Zhang Shi had personally picked up the tickets, Huayuan had reserved excellent seats for the two of them.

With no obstructions in front, they had a clear view of Chen Shu on stage.

On the large screen, Chen Shu’s close-ups were clearer than anyone else’s.

They arrived just as a song ended. Chen Shu quickly changed outfits, and the band immediately transitioned into the next song’s intro.

Ah—It’s Flawless!!!

Hearing the scream from beside him, Zhang Shi was startled.

He glanced at Yan Jingchuan and saw him frowning slightly, immediately regretting his suggestion to come to the live venue.

All this sudden screaming was far too noisy, and Director Yan disliked such environments the most.

But before he could think of an excuse to leave, Chen Shu’s figure slowly rose from the center of the stage on the big screen.

Backup dancers quickly ran up from behind the stage, fanning out behind him.

The singing began.

The dance exploded!

The screams grew even more intense.

Oh my god, Chen Shu is so handsome!!

Ah—Chen Shu! That outfit is so cool!!!

Zhang Shi looked at the face on the screen.

Handsome, indeed.

He certainly had the capital to make people’s ears ring.

But he couldn’t guarantee that Director Yan would tolerate such noise.

He glanced at Yan Jingchuan again.

Sure enough.

Director Yan’s frown deepened.

Director Yan…

Zhang Shi’s voice was drowned out by the roaring cheers.

Yan Jingchuan stared at the big screen, his expression cold and rigid.

Zhang Shi had no choice but to follow his gaze.

On the screen, Chen Shu led the backup dancers onto the circular stage extending into the audience, getting closer to the fans. The incessant screams were practically piercing through eardrums.

The hem of his light cyan suit jacket fluttered in the air with the rhythm of his singing and dancing. The decorative buttons had long been undone, revealing a lighter-colored vest underneath.

With only a single layer of fitted fabric, it inevitably came untucked from his waistband during dance moves. As he raised his arms, it lifted and fell, unintentionally revealing his powerful waistline, thinly covered by muscle, each time eliciting excited shouts.

His singing voice was deep and magnetic, his dance moves explosively rhythmic.

Every movement Chen Shu made on stage effortlessly stirred up waves of excitement across the venue!

He was simply too dazzling; his cold, stern eyes did nothing to dampen the fans’ fervor.

The fiery atmosphere of the live show effortlessly swept up everyone’s emotions!

Zhang Shi watched for a long time, only snapping out of it when the song ended. Behind Yan Jingchuan’s back, he quietly shook the automatic clapper in his hand along with the fans.

Noticing Yan Jingchuan’s sidelong glance, he silently put it down again.

The next two songs were slower ballads, without any high-energy dance numbers. Chen Shu’s outfit appeared neat and proper.

The grip Yan Jingchuan had on his cane gradually loosened.

Then came another costume change.

Zhang Shi glanced behind him and couldn’t help but marvel at Chen Shu’s popularity.

With Chen Shu’s talent, even without Director Yan’s help, he might have eventually paid off his family’s debts.

Of course, it wouldn’t have been as effortless as it was now.

As he was thinking, the partition screens on stage split open to the sides.

Chen Shu’s figure reappeared on the big screen.

He wore a lightweight white shirt with the sleeves casually rolled up to his elbows, paired with black suit pants. Several thin silver chains hung from the belt loops, shimmering with fragmented colors under the stage lights.

Zhang Shi couldn’t help but remark, Mr. Chen has such a great figure. He looks good in anything.

Yan Jingchuan swept a glance over Chen Shu’s collar—only the top button was undone—and offered no comment.

But gradually.

The shirt grew damp with sweat, clinging tightly to his skin.

The magnified screen faithfully delivered the faintly visible outline of Chen Shu’s abdominal muscles to the entire audience.

Restless screams slowly gathered, rising from all directions.

Ah—Chen Shu, I love you!!!

Abs, abs!! Give the stylist a raise!!!

The loosened grip on the cane slowly tightened again.

Yan Jingchuan stared at the all-too-clear image on the screen, his face darkening.

Clothes in disarray.

What a disgrace.
