Chapter 30:

Yan Jingchuan can play the piano?

Chen Shu turned and sat down on the piano bench.

Yan Jingchuan took a seat right beside him on his left.

How do you want to learn? Yan Jingchuan asked.

Chen Shu placed the sheet music on the stand: Just learning this one piece is enough.

Yan Jingchuan nodded, flipped through the score once, then raised his hands and rested them on the keys.

The piano piece that followed was melodious and fluid, without the slightest pause.

Chen Shu turned to look at him.

Yan Jingchuan’s gaze was lowered, fixed on the sheet music in front of him. His expression while playing was slightly different from usual—the sharpness in his eyes softened a little, making him appear calm.

Once the piece ended,

Yan Jingchuan withdrew his hands and turned his gaze, meeting Chen Shu’s eyes directly.

His heart inexplicably skipped a beat, and he instinctively averted his eyes, flipping the sheet music back to the first page. Well, am I qualified to teach you?

Chen Shu chuckled lightly. Please guide me, Teacher Yan.

He hadn’t expected Yan Jingchuan not only to play the piano but to play it quite well.

Hearing this, Yan Jingchuan looked at him again.

Seeing the curve of his lips, perhaps still caught in the lingering mood from playing, Yan Jingchuan’s tone was softer than usual when he spoke again. Then let’s begin. Play it once yourself.

Chen Shu asked, How do I play it?

Seeing his awkward hand posture, Yan Jingchuan asked in return, You have no foundation?

Chen Shu said, Mm.

Yan Jingchuan’s brow twitched slightly.

Zhang Shi had looked into Chen Shu’s background—it clearly stated that Chen Shu had passed Grade 4 piano. Even if he hadn’t practiced in a long time, he shouldn’t be this unfamiliar with even the most basic keys.

There was only one possibility.

Chen Shu’s records were fake.

To enter the entertainment industry, he’d told a lie that could be so easily exposed.

Yan Jingchuan glanced at Chen Shu before saying, Let’s start by memorizing the keys.

Since Chen Shu had no foundation at all, Yan Jingchuan adjusted his earlier approach, first introducing each key one by one, then teaching Chen Shu the piece section by section.

Learning just one song didn’t require too much knowledge.

Fortunately, Chen Shu could read sheet music and had a good memory, so he picked it up quickly—only his technique still clearly showed he was an amateur.

Lift your wrist.

Chen Shu complied.

Relax your fingers.

As he spoke, Yan Jingchuan reached over and placed his hand beside Chen Shu’s left hand, demonstrating in person.

Chen Shu played two keys, and his pinky accidentally brushed against Yan Jingchuan’s palm.

Yan Jingchuan instinctively withdrew his hand, gripping his cane to dispel the unfamiliar sensation.

What’s wrong?

Yan Jingchuan’s voice was calm. Nothing. Continue.

After three more notes:

Wrong.

Chen Shu played it again.

Still not right.

Yan Jingchuan frowned, then leaned over and pressed down on Chen Shu’s right hand, forcing him to adjust the height. Once more.

So Chen Shu tried again.

But as soon as the section ended, Yan Jingchuan frowned once more. Your left hand.

Like this?

Yan Jingchuan simply lifted his hand and placed it under Chen Shu’s wrist. Once more.

Chen Shu was still playing when Yan Jingchuan’s voice sounded again.

Straighten your back.

Chen Shu didn’t stop playing. The sheet music is too far.

Yan Jingchuan frowned and moved the sheet music closer to him.

Too close.

Yan Jingchuan pulled it back slightly.

It’s blocking my view. I can’t see the keys.

Yan Jingchuan’s fingers tightened slightly, and he moved it farther away.

Teacher Yan, your hand is shaking too much.

… Yan Jingchuan took a deep breath and said coldly, What exactly do you want?

Just then, there was a knock at the door.

Come in!

Zhang Shi’s knocking hand froze.

He had never seen Yan Jingchuan truly lose his temper before, nor had he ever seen Yan Jingchuan let his emotions show so plainly on his face.

This was bad.

Judging by that tone…

This visit was probably ill-timed for any kind of discussion…

Since the door had already been knocked, he had no choice but to enter.

Walking over to Yan Jingchuan after opening the door, he handed over the items in his hand: Director Yan, it’s time for your medicine.

Seeing the medicine box in his hand, Yan Jingchuan’s mind involuntarily flashed back to the scene that had occurred in the hotel not long ago. His expression darkened slightly. Only after turning and confirming that Chen Shu hadn’t noticed did he reach out to take it.

After Yan Jingchuan finished taking the medicine, Zhang Shi said, Director Yan, there’s been progress on the matter you asked me to investigate.

Yan Jingchuan handed the water cup and empty medicine box back to him.

Zhang Shi continued, What do you think…

The fun and games have gone on long enough.

Shouldn’t we return to handling serious business?

Catching the implication in his words, Chen Shu took the sheet music from Yan Jingchuan’s hand: Director Yan, please go attend to your matters. I’ll practice on my own.

Zhang Shi first stepped back half a step to make way for Yan Jingchuan to stand up.

But before he could fully clear the path, he heard Director Yan flatly refuse.

No.

Zhang Shi’s face went blank with resignation.

Looking up, he realized Director Yan didn’t even spare a glance in his direction.

You have too many bad habits, Yan Jingchuan said, taking the music score back. They must be corrected today.

Chen Shu was surprised. Don’t you need to handle your affairs?

Yan Jingchuan’s brow furrowed briefly before smoothing out. It’s not too late to deal with them tomorrow.

He had already deduced the general outcome of Zhang Shi’s investigation. Even with results, solving it wasn’t urgent.

With Chen Shu bringing Wangcai back, he could endure longer. Setting aside one evening for Chen Shu was more than manageable.

Zhang Shi wanted to advise against it, but he recalled Yan Jingchuan’s tone when he knocked on the door.

The irritation from being disturbed had been so intense.

Wouldn’t it be suicidal to lack situational awareness now?

He could only swallow his unwelcome but loyal advice.

Director Yan, shall I step out then?

Mm, Yan Jingchuan said. We’ll discuss matters tomorrow.

Zhang Shi nodded. Understood.

The door closed behind him as he left.

Yan Jingchuan had already turned back.

Without needing to look, he could feel Chen Shu’s gaze on him.

Don’t overthink it. I’m not doing this for you, he said, opening the music score and avoiding eye contact with Chen Shu. I simply dislike leaving things half-finished.

Reasonable and justified.

Convincing.

And Chen Shu truly didn’t overthink it.

Given Yan Jingchuan’s status, why would he need to lie?

He simply replied, Alright.

With that, he placed his hands back on the piano keys. Shall we continue?

Only then did Yan Jingchuan look at him. Seeing his complete indifference, a shadow flickered in Yan Jingchuan’s eyes. His grip on the music score tightened unconsciously, and only when he heard the crinkle of paper did he lower his gaze and look away.

Let’s begin.

—

Yan Jingchuan’s teaching was immensely helpful.

Long before the concert began, Chen Shu had already mastered playing the piece proficiently.

However, to avoid exposing his fundamental lack of piano skills, he continued self-studying.

Yan Jingchuan’s temperament was much better than he had imagined, and he was a man of his word.

Since agreeing to teach him piano, he made time every day to come to the practice room and help him rehearse.

Coincidentally, Yan Jingchuan’s condition had improved significantly. During this period, aside from still being very weak, he hadn’t fallen unconscious again, so Chen Shu didn’t move back to the Huayuan dormitory.

Wangcai, however, had been acting strangely lately.

Excessively energetic during the day, yet quiet and calm at night—like two extremes.

Chen Shu had never had a pet before.

Maybe all dogs were this capricious.

After all, its medical reports always came back perfectly healthy.

After the concert rehearsals, the funds from Chen Shu’s contract with Huayuan Media and his recent earnings were fully deposited. He made a special trip back to his original family home.

I only then learned that Yan Jingchuan was not only helping him, but also helping his original parents expand their business scale.

Although he had taken away a portion of the equity, the income from the chain operation was merely a drop in the bucket compared to the Yan Group, hardly worth the effort to invest in.

Yan Jingchuan’s original intention for investing certainly wasn’t about making money or not.

Chen Shu recalled that one-year sugar daddy agreement.

Regardless of Yan Jingchuan’s purpose, he was genuinely helping him solve his most critical debt problem.

Returning to Hengtai Community.

As soon as Chen Shu entered the door, Yan Jingchuan ordered him to go to the piano room first to complete today’s assignment.

Don’t close the door, Yan Jingchuan added.

Since he didn’t mind the noise, Chen Shu had no objection.

When he came out of the piano room later, Zhang Shi had already organized all the important documents on the table.

Yan Jingchuan was sitting on the sofa reading files. Hearing footsteps, he didn’t look up: Where did you go?

Chen Shu was unclipping Wangcai’s leash: What?

Only then did Yan Jingchuan look at him: Why did you come back so late?

Zhang Shi: …

Why did this conversation sound so strange?

It carried a distinct flavor of an old married couple.

Chen Shu said: I went home for a bit.

Yan Jingchuan didn’t press further, only saying: Wangcai, come here.

Zhang Shi’s face twisted.

Hearing Director Yan call that name, no matter how many times, always made him extremely uncomfortable.

Knowing Chen Shu was back, Director Yan probably wouldn’t focus on work anyway, so he simply stood up holding the documents: Director Yan, if there’s nothing else, I’ll head back first.

Yan Jingchuan said: Mm.

After Zhang Shi left, he picked up Wangcai who came trotting over and placed him on his lap. Lifting his eyes, he met Chen Shu’s gaze and paused: Something wrong?

Chen Shu said: Shouldn’t it be Director Yan who’s hiding something from me?

Yan Jingchuan’s hand on Wangcai’s back suddenly tightened.

He slowly sat upright, spine straight: I don’t know what you’re talking about.

Lately, to conserve energy, he would return to Wangcai’s body every night.

Had Chen Shu discovered something?

Thinking of past incidents, Yan Jingchuan’s expression darkened.

Anyone could find out.

Except Chen Shu!

Chen Shu said: Is there still a need to hide this matter?

Yan Jingchuan maintained surface composure: What exactly are you trying to say?

About my family matters, Chen Shu kindly reminded him. You invested in my family’s shop.

… Yan Jingchuan closed his eyes and leaned back against the chair, frowning as he said, Such a small matter, no need to take it to heart.

No, I should thank you.

Hearing this, Yan Jingchuan opened his eyes to look at him.

Chen Shu said: I know this is trivial to you, but I owe you a significant favor.

All things considered, Yan Jingchuan had indeed helped him greatly.

Yan Jingchuan looked at him.

Having lived closely with Chen Shu for so long, he could easily discern the seriousness in Chen Shu’s tone.

Maybe it’s presumptuous to say this, but if Director Yan ever needs my help with anything in the future, I’ll do my best to accomplish it.

This side of Chen Shu made Yan Jingchuan somewhat unaccustomed.

He averted his gaze, pretending to continue reading the file, seizing the opportunity: Good. I need you to agree to something right now.

Chen Shu asked: What is it?

Yan Jingchuan’s gaze remained fixed on the first line: From now on, you must report all your schedules to me.

Report his schedules?

That wasn’t difficult.

Chen Shu said: Okay.

Seeing him agree without hesitation, Yan Jingchuan continued: Not only must you report them, but no matter where you go, you must return to my side every night whenever possible.

Every night?

This time, Chen Shu didn’t respond immediately.

Yan Jingchuan asked, What, you don’t agree?

It’s not that I disagree, Chen Shu said. Sometimes when we’re not together, even if I want to rush back, it might be too late.

Yan Jingchuan frowned.

Chen Shu gave an example: Like the concert I’m holding in two days – I need to perform two shows back-to-back. The schedule is too tight, it’s really inconvenient.

Hearing this, Yan Jingchuan pinched the bridge of his nose.

Since living with Chen Shu, the latter would leave every now and then. Hearing this news, he actually wasn’t surprised.

Chen Shu said, Other than that, I can promise you I’ll try my best to return to your side every night.

Yan Jingchuan had helped him a lot. Although this request was strange, there was no need to refuse it.

His promise stirred something in Yan Jingchuan’s heart. His gaze finally lifted from the page and fell on Chen Shu’s face.

If there’s nothing else, rest early. Not hearing any follow-up from Yan Jingchuan, Chen Shu bid farewell and turned toward the bedroom.

Immediately, Wangcai jumped down and trotted after Chen Shu’s shadow.

Woof!

He had always been clingy with Chen Shu, almost never letting him disappear from sight.

Chen Shu wouldn’t leave him at home either.

Wait.

Watching Chen Shu’s retreating figure, Yan Jingchuan spoke.

Your concert – I’ll go with you.
