Shang Qinghui received the text message on Sunday.

The bright sunshine dispelled some of the winter chill but also added dryness. The warmth didn’t soothe the heart; instead, it fueled unease.

Everything seemed normal, yet unseen currents surged beneath the surface.

…

Monday, unlike yesterday’s fine weather, was overcast.

Bian Yingning, unusually, woke up early. She had a professional class, and even though it was the day of the bidding, she didn’t plan to skip class.

Spending the entire day on the bidding felt inefficient.

The bidding meeting was at 2:30 PM. She had prepared everything and only needed to wait.

Bian Yingning had breakfast at home and took some steamed dumplings. She had Shang Qinghui’s class schedule and knew she also had morning classes.

A new day, time to feed her brat.

…

Bian Yingning waited at Shang Qinghui’s classroom but didn’t see her.

Ji Xiaoxue, already seated, got up and approached, “Senior, are you waiting for someone?”

Bian Yingning checked her phone; there was still no reply from Shang Qinghui.

She looked up, offering a warm smile, “Junior, could you give this to Shang Qinghui if you see her?”

Ji Xiaoxue’s eyes fell on the opaque paper bag Bian Yingning offered. She had a feeling it was breakfast.

Bian Yingning was bringing Shang Qinghui breakfast.

Realizing this, she smiled, “Of course. I’ll give it to her if she comes to class.”

Bian Yingning nodded, thanked her, then paused, looking at Ji Xiaoxue.

“Junior, do you like your life now?”

Ji Xiaoxue was startled, unsure why Bian Yingning asked.

After a moment, she said sincerely, “Yes.”

She’d been in Haicheng for a while and had adapted to school life.

Transitioning from a tightly scheduled high school life to university, where self-discipline was key, had been an adjustment.

The unfamiliar environment, learning methods, and location were initially overwhelming. Everything here was dazzling, but she had adapted.

She was studying hard, improving her grades, and doing part-time jobs to build her resume.

Her brother’s illness, thanks to Bian Yingning’s help, was being treated at the best hospital, by the best doctors, with the best medicine. The surgery was successful, and he was recovering. She believed he would get better.

She had no complaints about her life.

Bian Yingning smiled gently, just as Ji Xiaoxue had seen her the first time, “That’s good.”

Her figure disappeared down the corridor. The teacher arrived, and Ji Xiaoxue stood still at the classroom door.

Some people appear in your life only to help you overcome difficulties, nothing more.

Ji Xiaoxue looked down at the paper bag. She had received Bian Yingning’s kindness, but it was different.

…

The Shang family’s villa was on a hillside outside the city center, requiring passing a sparsely populated area to reach Haicheng University.

Shang Qinghui’s pink sports car was parked by the roadside. She got out, leaning against the car, beside three black sedans.

The weather was gloomy, dark clouds overhead. It was morning, yet it felt like dusk.

A black car door opened, and Nangong Jin, in a dark blue suit, appeared.

Shang Qinghui showed no surprise, as if expecting him.

Nangong Jin looked thinner, his cheeks sunken, his usually cold face now sinister.

“Something wrong?” Despite being outnumbered, Shang Qinghui remained calm, leaning against the car with the confidence of a wealthy heiress.

Compared to her calm demeanor, Nangong Jin seemed tense.

He stepped closer, his gaze sharp, “I underestimated you.”

Shang Qinghui smiled, “Your arrogance is nothing new. Underestimating me isn’t surprising. How many people in H City catch your eye?”

Nangong Jin’s lips tightened, “You trust her so much?”

Shang Qinghui tilted her head, seemingly considering his words, “Is it a matter of trust?”

Nangong Jin waited for her to continue.

“That land doesn’t have our names on it. The highest bidder wins. Whoever gets it, gets it.”

“As for her approaching me with ulterior motives… I don’t think she can gain anything from me.”

Shang Qinghui spoke slowly. With each word, Nangong Jin’s face grew grimmer.

“How did you become like this?” Nangong Jin looked at her, as if she were a stranger. She used to be devoted to him. Now… it’s Bian Yingning.

“Like what?” Shang Qinghui tossed her hair, mockingly, “You don’t think I trust you more than her, do you?”

“Heh.” Nangong Jin stopped pursuing this topic. Since affection didn’t work, he’d try another approach.

“You don’t care about the Shang family, then?”

Silence fell. Only the chirping of insects remained.

Shang Qinghui tapped her arm rhythmically,

“I was worried before, but seeing you here, I’m not worried anymore.”

They looked at each other—one calm and elegant, the other sinister and murderous.

Yesterday morning, Shang Qinghui received an anonymous text message.

It said Bian Yingning was with her to win the southern project. If Shang Qinghui revealed Bian Yingning’s bid, he would erase the scandal about the Shang family.

Otherwise, news of a worker falling to his death during a construction project ten years ago, and the subsequent hush-up, would be revealed.

This wouldn’t destroy the Shang family immediately, but it would affect their stock price. The consequences were unimaginable.

Shang Qinghui admitted she was panicked.

Her brother was away, her parents were preparing for the bidding. Only she knew about this.

She felt helpless, like a piece of duckweed in a rapid current.

But when she saw the maid bring Bian Yingning’s washed and dried clothes, she calmed down.

She called back; it was an invalid number. If the sender really had secrets about her family, why be so meticulous?

Even if she got Bian Yingning’s bid, how would she give it to them?

Another possibility—she was being monitored, her phone tapped.

She remained calm.

The bidding was imminent; she shouldn’t be the one rushing.

She didn’t know if the text message was true.

The best approach was to wait and see.

If the sender wanted to blackmail her, they would lose patience.

And here he was.

If the Shang family really had this scandal, and something unfortunate happened because of her…

She and Bian Yingning could sell noodles or fried rice for a living. She cooked well; they wouldn’t starve.

Seeing Shang Qinghui’s composure, Nangong Jin was shocked. His lips trembled.

Shang Qinghui was known for being spoiled and willful.

She might be a successful heiress, but she wasn’t business-minded. She was naive, a love-brained simpleton, only interested in comparing bags, clothes, and jewelry.

She was his last card. He had memories from his past life; he remembered the Shang family’s bid, but he hadn’t expected the Bian family to bid.

He was sure Bian Yingning knew the Shang family’s bid.

His only opponent was Bian Yingning.

But how…

In this situation, Shang Qinghui would fight to protect her family and her status.

But now…

“Are you also reborn?” Nangong Jin, his plans failing, asked in shock. Only this could explain why she was so different.

Since I could be reborn, Bian Yingning could be, then Shang Qinghui… why not?

Shang Qinghui frowned slightly.

What did he say? Reborn?
