Chapter 13: First Meeting at the Coffee Shop
Qi Yuan lay flat on his bed, savoring the quiet moments. Once his Student Council duties officially began, peaceful days would become a distant memory.
His phone was on vibrate mode. Barely had he settled down when a series of vibrations compelled him to check the incoming messages with a sigh.
Student Council Newcomer Group (53 members)
Zhuo Ming: Everyone, meet at East University Room 1105 tonight at 6:00 PM. We’ll be discussing role assignments and reviewing the Student Council’s rules and regulations.
Zhuo Ming: The Student Council is swamped with tasks, so everyone will need to start working officially tomorrow.
Su Liang: Received.
Xu Qian: Received.
Jiang Wenbai: Received.
Qi Yuan: Received.
Looking at the entire row of “Received” messages, Qi Yuan had never considered himself someone special. He was just trying to make money—nothing shameful about that. He casually replied with “Received,” stood up, and prepared to leave.
Yao Yu had messaged him, saying she was working part-time at a café on campus and offered to treat him to a coffee as an apology for ditching him the other day, using her employee discount.
To be honest, if she hadn’t mentioned it, Qi Yuan wouldn’t have even remembered the incident.
He initially wanted to decline, but realizing this was an opportunity to strengthen their friendship, he accepted.
He’d never acquired a taste for coffee. In his previous life, he’d downed countless cups to stay alert for studying and work, yet still found it bitter.
This time around, he hoped to drink less of it.
After tidying up quickly and grabbing his already-prepared notes for his major, Qi Yuan headed out.
Relationships only deepen through mutual give-and-take—a simple truth.
“Qi Yuan!”
The café was nearly empty, and Yao Yu spotted Qi Yuan the moment he walked in, eagerly beckoning him over.
“Qi Yuan, what would you like to drink? I can make anything for you,” she whispered, careful not to disturb the other patrons.
“Surprise me with your specialty,” Qi Yuan replied, glancing around. Nothing caught his eye, so he left the choice to her.
Yao Yu beamed. “Okay!”
“Why don’t you take a seat? It’ll be just a minute.”
He nodded and settled into a comfortable spot, pulling out a detective novel. The opening lines were immediately captivating, and the café’s quiet, cozy atmosphere made it the perfect setting for reading.
He’d only read a few pages when he sensed someone sitting across from him. Glancing up, Qi Yuan saw a young man in a suit. The man’s features struck him as familiar, as if he’d seen him somewhere before, but Qi Yuan couldn’t place it.
The suited man possessed striking looks: sharp, arched eyebrows, piercing eyes, and deeply sculpted features. His expression was serene and detached, and his thick, dark lashes shadowed ink-black eyes.
His suit was impeccably tailored, every button fastened to the top, yet even this formality couldn’t conceal an innate air of nobility.
Noticing Qi Yuan’s gaze, the man returned the look. Their eyes met briefly before Qi Yuan lowered his head back to his book.
The man in the suit withdrew his gaze. Having graduated from Weilika University several years ago, he had returned to handle some business and decided to stop by the academy out of nostalgia.
This café had been a regular haunt during his student days. After all these years, it remained unchanged—comforting in its predictability.
Perfect. He loathed surprises.
Just then, Qi Yuan’s coffee was served.
Qi Yuan accepted the cup. “Thank you.”
“I won’t disturb you while you’re reading, Qi Yuan.”
Yao Yu left after serving him. The part-time job was relatively easy for her. Making coffee wasn’t particularly difficult, especially since she had worked at a bubble tea shop before, giving her a solid foundation. Combined with her excellent memory, she picked up the skills quickly and got the hang of things in no time.
As expected, drinking coffee was torture for Qi Yuan. By the time he finished his book, he had only managed to drink a third of the coffee on his table.
Left with no other choice, Qi Yuan forced himself to down the remaining coffee in one gulp, handed his notes to Yao Yu with an expressionless face, and hurried away.
Completely oblivious, he didn’t notice the fleeting amusement that flashed in the suit-clad man’s eyes as he watched Qi Yuan chug his coffee.
Arriving punctually at East University’s Room 1105 for the new members’ meeting, Qi Yuan received his designation as a regular member—exactly as he’d anticipated. After all, how could a penniless student just joining the Student Council possibly be assigned anything else?
Time always seemed to slip by so quickly. Even on a day when nothing much happened, it was soon evening, time for bed.
After brushing his teeth and lying down, Qi Yuan still inexplicably tasted coffee in his mouth. The aroma was actually quite pleasant, but the flavor… utterly repulsive.
Hmph, so much for thinking I wouldn’t dream.
After drifting off, Qi Yuan’s eyes snapped open. He found himself in an office—on the top floor, no less. Peering down through the floor-to-ceiling windows, the cars and people below looked like ants.
He was wearing an oversized white shirt that clearly wasn’t his own, paired with only shorts.
The sparsely furnished office had a door at the far end. Peeking inside, he found a small room with a bed and a bathroom—presumably the office owner’s private quarters.
The rumpled bedding suggested his dream self had been sleeping here, waking up, and emerging to sit on the office sofa, as if waiting for someone.
The tightly closed door behind him swung open, and someone entered.
“Finally decided to get up?”
The deep voice carried a teasing edge.
Qi Yuan turned to face the man, his eyelid twitching involuntarily.
It was the suit-clad man he’d seen at the coffee shop earlier that day.
Damn it, I don’t even know his name.
“What’s wrong? Did you forget your own husband after a single nap?”
Qi Yuan: “………”
He desperately wanted to reply that he genuinely didn’t recognize him, but his sixth sense warned him against it.
Silently, he sank back onto the sofa. The air conditioning was set a little too low, so he grabbed the small blanket from the sofa and draped it over his legs, pondering what to do.
At least he knew You Qinghe and Yang Huaiyuan—he’d interacted with them before. But this man… he was completely unfamiliar.
The man took off his suit jacket and placed it on the desk before kneeling in front of Qi Yuan.
“Still angry?” he asked, grasping Qi Yuan’s hand and kissing it.
“Darling, I’ve been reflecting. I shouldn’t have overreacted when you were alone with You Qinghe.”
“But he was your first love, and I can’t help feeling jealous.”
“You should forgive my overreaction. You’re my lover, and he’s my younger brother. Aside from jealousy and envy, what else can I do? It’s natural for me to feel this way, don’t you think?”
!!!
Fuck.
It was You Yuanxiu!
You Qinghe’s Big Brother… has he gone completely mad?!
Qi Yuan struggled to process how he’d become entangled with You Yuanxiu in this dream. No wonder his eyes and eyebrows looked familiar at first glance—how could You Qinghe’s Big Brother not be familiar?
