Liu Wenjing pretended to be shy as she stepped forward, greeting Ye Fangfei’s uncle and aunt first, before turning her gaze to Ye Fangfei.

“Sis-in-law, today’s matter was my mother-in-law acting out of anxiety. She didn’t mean anything else and didn’t go through your things—she just wanted to see how spacious your room is, and how future belongings could be arranged.”

Ye Fangfei smiled faintly, ignoring her excuse about “going through things,” and asked pointedly, “Do you think it’s appropriate for her to enter my room without my permission?”

“Well… not really. But at the time, my mother-in-law didn’t think too much. She probably thought, since we’re all family, it wouldn’t hurt to take a look. But yes, it was a bit inappropriate.”

In front of so many people, Liu Wenjing couldn’t argue on Li Guiying’s behalf. By admitting the mistake herself, she at least looked sincere.

Ye Fangfei nodded calmly, then pressed further. “Since you also think it’s inappropriate to sneak into someone else’s room, why didn’t you stop her?”

Hearing the word “sneak,” Liu Wenjing slightly furrowed her brow. “I didn’t know she went into your room, or I would have stopped her.”

Exactly what Ye Fangfei had been waiting to hear. Her earlier calm gave way to a sharp, relentless tone.

“Then why did you just say she didn’t go through my things? If it was done, admit it. I’d even respect you more for being honest.”

“And yet your eldest branch still acts the same as always—when something goes wrong, the first reaction is to argue, shifting blame onto others to prove your family’s innocence. It’s truly contemptible.”

She finished speaking and turned away, addressing Shen Jianhua and Sun Xiujun. “Dad, Mom, I’ll go back to my parents’ early tomorrow. Have my father bring a few people to help sort the house. Once it’s ready, we’ll move quickly and free up the place—no need to linger where we’re not wanted.”

Shen Jianhua and Sun Xiujun nodded and ignored the eldest branch, heading into their own rooms.

Starting tonight, they would eat separately. With only one pot, the three households had to take turns cooking. Once they bought a new pot, they’d split fully.

After the other two households finished dinner, Sun Xiujun and Shen Cuiluan went to the kitchen to cook.

Shen Chunsheng and Shen Zhangshi didn’t eat with their sons either. The elderly couple cooked separately, getting a head start without having to squeeze in with their children.

When Ye Fangfei was packing, she remembered a few leftover sweet melons.

She called Shen Zhanqiang into the room and handed them over. “Take these and share them with your parents.”

“Sis-in-law, aren’t you eating? These melons are super sweet! I had one this morning at your house, then Grandma gave me another before I left. I’ve eaten two already today,” Shen Zhanqiang said, holding up two fingers in boast.

Ye Fangfei glanced at him. “Mom gave you some. Did you forget about me?”

Shen Zhanqiang chuckled, carrying the melons to his parents’ room.

By the time everyone finished dinner, it was nearly nine o’clock.

Ye Fangfei had planned to update her in-laws about her shop, but it was too late. She decided to wait until tomorrow.

Leaning over the table to list the things she needed to buy the next day, Sun Xiujun came in. “Fangfei, are you busy?”

“No, I can’t sleep, just scribbling a bit,” Ye Fangfei said with a smile, standing to give her mother-in-law the dressing stool. “Mom, please sit.”

After sitting, Sun Xiujun asked about her health and inquired after her relatives before bringing up the property division.

“Your grandfather said that over the years, 548 yuan was saved and split into western shares. Your grandparents keep one share, and each of the three households takes one share. That’s 137 yuan per household. Everything else was divided equally.”

“For your grandparents’ retirement, your grandfather said each son will give them twenty-six jin of grain, a jin of oil every month, two sets of clothing each year, three yuan pocket money, and gifts during holidays—whatever the heart desires.”

Ye Fangfei only smiled and nodded. “I understand, Mom.”

Sun Xiujun took a few bills from her pocket. “Fangfei, take these fifty yuan. Buy a few outfits—people in the city wear dresses, they look nice. Get a couple for yourself.”

Ye Fangfei was touched. Her in-laws truly cared for her.

She didn’t take the money immediately. “Mom, I don’t need it. Keep it. I have my own money.”

“The 200-yuan dowry Shen Zhanxun gave, my parents let me bring back, and I added a little more. Over the past two years, Shen Zhanxun has been sending money to my mother every month. I’ve saved it all, hundreds of yuan,” she explained.

Sun Xiujun placed the bills on the dressing table and patted Ye Fangfei’s hand. “Save your own money for later. This money from the property division is yours. Accept it—this is what your dad wants.”

Ye Fangfei hesitated. Though she urgently needed money, fifty yuan felt like a hot coal in her hand.

Finally, she said, “Okay, I’ll take it for now. If you and Dad need money later, just let me know.”

Sun Xiujun smiled. “I know you’re a good girl. Zhanxun’s been gone for two or three years, and you’ve never complained. We’ve wronged you. Once the house is sorted, we’ll write him a letter. He must come back, no matter how busy.”

Ye Fangfei waved her hands. “Mom, no need to write. Military discipline is strict; don’t let it affect his work.”

She didn’t want him to return just yet. Let her career stabilize for a few years. When she was ready for children, he could help then.

Seeing her hesitation, Sun Xiujun dropped the subject.

Ye Fangfei took the opportunity to tell her mother-in-law about her business plans. “Mom, I’ve rented a shop today and will apply for a business license tomorrow. Once our house is sorted, I’ll take you and Dad to the city to have a look.”

Sun Xiujun was shocked. “Fangfei, what? You’re opening a pastry shop, and the shop is already rented?!”

Seeing her mother-in-law’s excitement, Ye Fangfei nodded slightly, wondering if she might object.

“That pastry work isn’t easy. We don’t have the skills—how will you open a shop?”

Sun Xiujun frowned, worried about her ability. Ye Fangfei laughed, realizing it wasn’t resistance, just concern over her skills.

“Mom, who says I can’t do it? My pastries are delicious. I’ll make you some sponge cakes in a few days—you’ll see my talent.”

“Fangfei, you really can make sponge cakes?”

It was understandable her mother-in-law doubted her. She’d been married for two or three years, and normally, her cooking was inconsistent. Sponge cakes were something else entirely.

“Yes, Mom. The shop is a partnership with my brother, Brother Xihu,” Ye Fangfei said playfully, winking. “If I couldn’t do it, why would he team up with me?”

“If you’re partnering with Brother Xihu, then I’m reassured. He’s reliable,” Sun Xiujun said, finally allowing herself a playful tease.

Ye Fangfei laughed, sweetly painting a future for her mother-in-law. “Mom, once my shop opens, you and Dad won’t have to farm anymore. You’ll help me, and I’ll pay you a salary so you can enjoy city life.”

Sun Xiujun accepted the promise wholeheartedly.

“Then Mom will look forward to enjoying your success,” she said with a bright smile.
