Chapter 132: Zhai Moyu & Sun Jiayi (5)

Sun Jiayi had always firmly believed in Lin Yufan’s feelings for her, but she later realized that deep affection could be faked—and convincingly so for years.

Perhaps Lin Yufan did genuinely care for her, but his desires ultimately overpowered that affection.

It wasn’t until a pregnant woman showed up at the school and caused a scene that Sun Jiayi understood: the past few years had been nothing but an illusion of love.

She couldn’t fathom how Lin Yufan had managed it. He spent almost every day with her, his caring and comforting expressions seemed sincere, and even when he occasionally went out, he would always keep her updated.

Yet, during those very updates, he could be embracing another woman, completely at ease.

The woman was already three or four months pregnant. When she stormed into the school and accused Sun Jiayi of being the other woman, Sun Jiayi finally learned that throughout the three years she had been with Lin Yufan, he had another girlfriend in a different city.

Faced with the woman’s unreasonable accusations and the curious stares of her classmates, Sun Jiayi walked past coldly, not sparing the woman so much as a glance, and went straight to the laboratory.

Later, Lin Yufan rushed to her in a panic, apologizing and begging for another chance, promising he would handle everything.

Seeing his face, Sun Jiayi felt a stir of emotion. His tender eyes glistened with unshed tears, his handsome features etched with pitiful distress—he looked utterly helpless.

“Lin Yufan, I’ve been a fool, deceived by you for three years.”

What was real and what was fake? Everyone who had ever met him told her he was the perfect boyfriend. He had fooled them all so perfectly.

When you passionately declared your love for me, were you sincere? When you checked in with me from another city, were you trying to reassure me—or were you excitedly anticipating the comfort of another’s embrace?

You promised to protect my innocence, yet you were sharing a bed with another woman?

What was ever real?

Lin Yufan stood outside Sun Jiayi’s dormitory for days, ignoring the inquisitive glances of passersby, putting on a show of deep devotion. But Sun Jiayi never once came down to see him.

What happened after?

The thought still made Sun Jiayi want to laugh—she had been a complete joke.

Back then, she locked herself in her dorm room for days, refusing to go out. It was her first love, her first relationship—how could she not be heartbroken?

But when she finally pulled herself together and stepped outside, she was accused of academic plagiarism—with Lin Yufan named as the victim of her theft.

At the time, Sun Jiayi was in the final stages of her Ph.D. program, with several hospitals already extending job offers. This incident destroyed everything, even threatening her graduation.

If not for her advisor’s intervention, Sun Jiayi would have faced severe disciplinary action. Her personal scandal brought shame upon the entire department.

Too ashamed to continue her research, Sun Jiayi left the city after graduation and chose a different medical specialty.

Otherwise, how would a once-promising prodigy end up busy in a small andrology clinic?

Zhai Moyu’s heart ached as he watched Sun Jiayi’s slender back. She looked so small, curled up like a little kitten.

He walked over and knelt in front of her, his broad, warm hand gently cupping her delicate face, his eyes filled with compassion.

“I won’t let him appear in front of you again.”

Sun Jiayi lowered her gaze, her eyes filled with complex emotions. So, you know? I can’t give you a response. Lin Yufan was once so perfect, he deceived everyone. I…

I don’t know how to trust men anymore.

Zhai Moyu’s heart felt as if it were being tightly clenched. He didn’t mind pursuing her longer or working harder; what pained him was how that scoundrel Lin Yufan had plunged Sun Jiayi into endless insecurity.

I’ve told you, you don’t need to give me any response. Everything I do is of my own free will.

Zhai Moyu had his police friends put Lin Yufan under surveillance. That night, he didn’t return home but slept on the sofa in Sun Jiayi’s living room.

His tall frame curled uncomfortably on the small couch, making for a restless sleep. In the middle of the night, he felt someone covering him with a blanket. Opening his eyes, he met Sun Jiayi’s bright gaze.

As Sun Jiayi withdrew her hand, he instinctively caught it, her soft hand enveloped in his palm. Moonlight streamed through the window into that small space, the quiet room so still they could almost hear each other’s heartbeats.

In the end, Zhai Moyu did nothing, silently releasing her hand and telling her to get some rest.

Afterward, Zhai Moyu frequently visited Sun Jiayi’s home, restocking her refrigerator and cooking for her whenever he wasn’t on duty.

Their relationship developed a wordless understanding through these gentle interactions.

Zhai Moyu obtained a key to Sun Jiayi’s home, and she occasionally went out with him.

Once, Zhai Moyu invited Song Shimu and Lu Zhijin to join them for a picnic at Phoenix Mountain. The couple intentionally tried to create opportunities for them.

Moyu comes from three generations of military heroes—how could that scoundrel Lin Yufan ever compare! Look how wonderful A Jin is; his friends are definitely reliable too! Song Shimu urged Sun Jiayi not to overthink things.

Are you indirectly praising your wonderful husband now?

My husband is naturally amazing—does he even need my praise?

Song Shimu wore a proud expression, but she genuinely hoped her dear friend could move past her old wounds.

It’s not that I don’t believe in love anymore, I just… Sun Jiayi struggled to find the right words. I just want to be more cautious.

In the evening, Sun Jiayi and Zhai Moyu went for a walk to the small pavilion at the mountain peak.

During the brief moment Zhai Moyu stepped away to buy bottled water from a shop, he turned back to see a man asking for Sun Jiayi’s WeChat—and worst of all, she was smiling as she gave it to him!

Zhai Moyu’s heart churned with jealousy. With a darkened expression, he tightened the bottle cap irritably before handing it to Sun Jiayi.

Sun Jiayi’s hand turned red from straining, but the cap wouldn’t budge. Stubborn as ever, she gritted her teeth and furrowed her brows, determined to conquer the bottle.

Zhai Moyu sighed helplessly at the sky, realizing his own behavior was somewhat childish. He reached over, took the bottle, and opened it effortlessly.

Seeing her reddened palm, his heart ached. He pulled her hand toward him, bowing his head to gently blow on it.

You’re going to be the death of me!

Not likely—I can’t even open a bottle. As if she had that power!

……

I’d say your ability to annoy people is plenty strong! Zhai Moyu murmured, softly stroking her tender palm.

Not bad, I suppose. Sun Jiayi retorted stubbornly.

Zhai Moyu’s Adam’s apple bobbed. Unable to hold back any longer, he finally asked, What did that man want earlier?

Sun Jiayi looked puzzled for a moment before understanding dawned. Oh, it’s a former patient of mine who occasionally consults me with some questions.

If they’re sick, they should go to the hospital! Why consult you?

But I am a doctor. Even at the hospital, they’d be consulting me. Sun Jiayi wore an innocent expression.

When I message you, it takes half a century to get a reply! Yet others get to consult you whenever they want?! Zhai Moyu felt uncomfortable inside, a sour numbness spreading uncontrollably.

It’s different.

What’s so different about it?!

Zhai Moyu failed to control his tone, his voice rising sharply. Sun Jiayi was startled by his outburst, thinking to herself that men were truly unreliable. Her lips pursed in displeasure as she turned to leave.

Watching the woman’s angry retreating figure, Zhai Moyu instantly panicked, feeling like a complete jerk. He hurried after her.

But Sun Jiayi had made up her mind to ignore Zhai Moyu, her face set in a stern expression.

Regret, anger, frustration, and anxiety churned within Zhai Moyu. With a sudden resolve, he pulled Sun Jiayi into his embrace and lowered his head to kiss the lips he had long yearned for.
