Chapter 45

Save it?

Xie Qingling scrutinized the Hair-Eating Spirit for a long moment.

Taking in its terrifying face, thick limbs, and its earlier attempt to sneak into Chai Yuhu’s dreams to wreak havoc so brazen and lawless anyone else would be screaming for help upon encountering it.

How dare it have the nerve to beg for rescue?

Or was it actually surrendering to her?

Regardless, she would capture it first and deal with the rest later.

Xie Qingling said, “Come with me into the Ghost Binding Banner first.”

In her dream, she tightly pinched her own palm. A sharp pain later, Xie Qingling woke from the nightmare.

At this moment, the room still appeared empty to the naked eye to any human, she was the only one here.

But Xie Qingling knew the Hair-Eating Spirit was still in the dream, not yet gone.

She reached out and took the Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva Clay Figurine from the bedside table.

“With your eyes, see what I see.”

The Killing Field instantly unfolded.

In that instant, the Hair-Eating Spirit revealed its true form.

It still hadn’t left not only that, it was crawling toward Xie Qingling again.

“Save… save me… save me…”

From its hideous and terrifying face, Xie Qingling could see a pleading expression. Even though its face was unbearably ugly, its demeanor looked exceptionally pitiful.

Was it really begging for help?

Xie Qingling frowned. She sheathed the Blood Oath dagger at her waist and took out the Ghost Binding Banner from her canvas bag.

In situations like this, excessive sympathy was useless, but she didn’t want to kill indiscriminately either.

Better to capture it with the Ghost Binding Banner first and bring it back for Ling Fang to examine.

This Hair-Eating Spirit seemed quite weak she could try subduing it directly.

Although Xie Qingling was sharp and talented enough, compared to Ling Fang and the others, she still lacked practical experience.

For matters like this, it was best to consult them directly.

“Universe Origin Sect, I am the Spirit Sealer. Arrest Souls and Chase Spirits, lock them within.”

As Xie Qingling’s incantation fell, the Hair-Eating Spirit let out mournful wails, its body transforming into strands of substantial black smoke that were gradually drawn into the Ghost Binding Banner.

Just as the strands of black smoke were about to form ink-like patterns and paint the Hair-Eating Spirit’s image on the pure white banner surface, the spirit’s cries abruptly ceased.

The black smoke stopped flowing into the banner, becoming completely still.

The Ghost Binding Banner’s seal had been interrupted.

The Hair-Eating Spirit was ejected, falling to the ground and rolling several times before stopping.

It seemed momentarily stunned, then realized it hadn’t been captured.

But this realization didn’t bring it any excitement instead, its cries carried a tone of resentment.

Seeing this result, Xie Qingling felt deeply puzzled.

Products from the Technology R&D Department should have stable quality control.

Over this period, Xie Qingling had captured many minor spirits with the Ghost Binding Banner without any issues. Why would there be an exception this time?

She would try again.

“Universe Origin Sect, I am the Spirit Sealer. Arrest Souls and Chase Spirits, lock them within.”

“Lock!”

Once again, the Hair-Eating Spirit’s image slowly began to appear on the banner fabric.

But similarly, this time too, the Ghost Binding Banner’s seal on the Hair-Eating Spirit was interrupted midway.

Just as the Ghost Binding Banner was about to complete the seal, Xie Qingling saw something pull the Hair-Eating Spirit back from within the banner.

It appeared to be several red threads… very thin and barely visible unless examined closely.

As Xie Qingling took a few steps forward to get a clearer look at these red threads, the previously harmless Hair-Eating Spirit suddenly sprang into action.

It crawled on the ground like a mad dog, then leaped up abruptly, charging at Xie Qingling with tearing ferocity.

Xie Qingling supported herself with one hand on the ground, arching backward to evade the sudden attack, while her other hand drew Blood Oath. With a twist of the blade, she reversed her grip on the hilt.

“It seems you’re determined to remain unrepentant,” Xie Qingling said coldly.

She didn’t hold back either, wielding both short blades simultaneously as she launched her assault on the Hair-Eating Spirit.

The Hair-Eating Spirit raised its hoof-like hands to block, the rough, hard skin clashing with Blood Oath and producing a harsh metallic scraping sound.

Xie Qingling exerted all her strength, intending to sever the Hair-Eating Spirit’s arm directly. But just as she applied force, the spirit’s arm bent backward at a ninety-degree angle.

A sharp “crack” sounded from its arm, as if bones had fractured, yet it violently and directly neutralized Xie Qingling’s attack.

Xie Qingling froze momentarily.

How did it do that?

Could it be that the Hair-Eating Spirit’s way of exerting force differed from humans?

Yet, judging by its expression, this near arm-breaking movement clearly caused it excruciating pain, twisting its features into a grimace.

Xie Qingling retreated, putting some distance between herself and the Hair-Eating Spirit.

From this angle, she could see the spirit’s full form more clearly.

This time, Xie Qingling finally saw them clearly.

Red threads!

The Hair-Eating Spirit’s limbs were all bound with red threads.

These four slender, almost invisible red threads, faint yet distinct, resembled puppet strings controlling the Hair-Eating Spirit’s every movement.

Including the earlier failed seal by the Ghost Binding Banner it was all the work of these four red threads.

A sense of foreboding settled in Xie Qingling’s heart.

These red threads could counter the Ghost Binding Banner’s seal, indicating that the power behind them surpassed what such a banner could handle.

So it wasn’t just one spirit.

Behind the Hair-Eating Spirit, there was another.

As Xie Qingling pondered this, the Hair-Eating Spirit charged at her again with swift ferocity.

She couldn’t retreat, nor was retreat an option.

Though the Hair-Eating Spirit was weak on its own, combined with these four red threads, it had become a troublesome opponent.

Killing the Hair-Eating Spirit would be the easiest solution.

But Xie Qingling didn’t want that.

The Hair-Eating Spirit had never harmed anyone.

She needed to find a way to capture the Hair-Eating Spirit first, then force the mastermind behind the scenes to reveal themselves!

Xie Qingling recalibrated her approach. As the Hair-Eating Spirit lunged at her, she sidestepped slightly and delivered a powerful kick.

The kick sent the Hair-Eating Spirit crashing against the wall.

Just as it tried to turn over, Xie Qingling threw the blade in her left hand, striking the Hair-Eating Spirit’s arm squarely.

Blood Oath pierced through its hand, temporarily pinning it to the wall.

Xie Qingling leaped up and swiftly rushed before the Hair-Eating Ghost. With a single slash of her blade, she severed the threads entangling its limbs.

Good, let’s try again.

“Universe Origin Sect, I am the Spirit Sealer. Arrest Souls and Chase Spirits, lock them within.”

As the words fell, the Ghost Binding Banner stirred without wind, moving once more.

The Hair-Eating Ghost transformed back into black smoke and was drawn into the pristine white Ghost Binding Banner.

Its final cry even carried a sense of relief, as if liberated.

Before long, the image of the Hair-Eating Ghost with silver horns on its head, three eyes, and a vertical mouth appeared on the Ghost Binding Banner.

Not bad. The Hair-Eating Ghost was truly weak, easily handled like this.

That leaves only the ghost hiding behind the scenes, the one that has yet to show itself.

[Oh Psychic, oh Psychic, though you are brave enough and clever enough, this time, unfortunate one, you have provoked a monster you should never have crossed.]

[The wedding night, the moment one’s name appears on the gold list these are such joyous milestones in life. Yet those who meet their untimely end during these great celebrations transform into Auspicious Ghosts. The Auspicious Ghost embodies the clash of red and white, the conflict of baleful energies, soaring resentment, and deadly intent. To see one is to meet certain death.]

[Life’s great events weddings and funerals, marriages and burials the Red Wedding Dress experienced the plunge from extreme joy to profound sorrow all in a single day. On her own wedding day, the unfortunate Red Wedding Dress, clad in crimson robes and crowned with a Phoenix Coronet, had her face veiled by a white cloth and was laid to rest in a coffin.]

[The Red Wedding Dress waited in vain for her groom, wandering day after day along the wailing shores of the River of Oblivion. Oh my husband, my husband, you have yet to lift my bridal veil how could I, your wife, bear to leave you?]

[At last, after who knows how many years in death, the Red Wedding Dress finally encountered a gentleman who appreciated feminine beauty.]

[A chrysanthemum, yellow and white, drifted slowly down the River of Oblivion, coming to rest before the Red Wedding Dress.]

[Picking up the flower that carried such tender affection, she set her heart on this beloved. Yet, steeped in Yin energy and laden with curses, too heavy with resentment to roam freely in the mortal realm. Oh my husband, do not fret, wait just a little longer she will soon cross these murky Underworld waters to join you.]

[A hapless passing Hair-Eating Ghost became the Red Wedding Dress’s messenger. Too ugly to serve as her bridesmaid, it was still useful for running errands and delivering messages. After all, these feeble little spirits, having never harmed a human life, fear not the sunlight of the mortal world and can move about freely what perfect messengers they make.]

[The exhausted Hair-Eating Ghost, forced into the role of matchmaking courier, sent a plea for help to the Psychic. By drawing it into the Ghost Binding Banner, you saved its life. But oh Psychic, you have shattered the Red Wedding Dress’s long-awaited romance, stolen her beloved, and deceived her affections. Surely, she will not let you go.]

[And now, by severing the red threads through which she controlled the Hair-Eating Ghost, you have drawn the Red Wedding Dress’s attention. Those curse-filled black eyes have already turned their gaze upon you.]

The sun in the mortal world hindered the Red Wedding Dress’s urgent steps toward her beloved, yet the nights of the mortal realm became a playground for Demons and Monsters. The thick darkness welcomed the arrival of the Red Wedding Dress. Listen closely the Red Wedding Dress had already tread through the waters by the River of Forgetfulness, rushing toward you.

As the voice in her mind ceased, Xie Qingling immediately sensed that the small, cramped studio apartment had suddenly turned eerie and shadowy, thick with a sinister aura.

It felt as if the air conditioning had been cranked down by over ten degrees the chill raised goosebumps all over her body. The sensation of being deeply watched by an indescribable presence sent shivers down her spine.

Xie Qingling pulled earphones from her canvas bag and put them on.

She tapped the earphones several times, trying to contact her department to report the situation on-site.

No connection.

The communication device had failed.

Her face cold, Xie Qingling instinctively tightened her grip on the Blood Oath, her eyes fixed intently on her surroundings.

In the boundless, heavy darkness, a restless, unsettling scent of blood seemed to swirl and surge.

Xie Qingling’s sharp eyes noticed red fluid seeping from the crevices of the originally white walls.

The crimson liquid slowly permeated the walls, moving like a living substance. Thick and viscous, it crawled gradually, as if intending to coat every inch of the room’s walls. A rusty, metallic odor spread to every corner of the space.

Slowly, it began to surge toward Xie Qingling.
