Chapter 44
One day ago, Tuesday morning.
Xie Qingling brought Chai Yuhu to the office.
Ling Fang informed Chai Yuhu that the operation was temporarily suspended. Though confused, Chai Yuhu obediently complied.
“Then… I’ll be going now.”
“Finish your tea first.”
“O-okay.”
After gulping down the tea, Chai Yuhu felt his entire being become much more tranquil.
All the restless thoughts and unnecessary worries in his mind dissipated like morning mist.
For the first time, he truly understood what it meant to feel clear-headed and refreshed.
Just as he was about to praise how effective the Calming Tea was, before he could even look up, Ling Fang’s voice came from above him: “Since you’ve finished drinking, I’ll continue. Although this operation has been canceled, the next one has already been initiated, and we still require your cooperation.”
“What?” Chai Yuhu was stunned.
It wasn’t over yet?
“Given that the target has been reluctant to show up, we suspect it’s wary of our presence.” If this stalemate continues, we won’t achieve any results. We’ve decided to have someone impersonate you to lure the snake out of its hole. Until this matter is resolved, you’ll be living here where your safety can be guaranteed.”
Chai Yuhu was utterly bewildered.
He didn’t understand, he couldn’t comprehend, he was shocked.
“Um… may I ask first… was what happened to me recently really not just a human-prank hair-shaving incident?” Chai Yuhu asked.
Although he was the one who reported it to the police, his original intention was simply to catch the person who illegally broke into his home as a prank! He never expected things to escalate to this scale.
Ling Fang: “Clearly, no.”
“Then could I ask… who exactly have I offended… or rather, what thing?” Chai Yuhu felt the pressure mounting.
When Ling Fang answered “no,” was he denying “prank” or “human involvement”!
Ling Fang countered, “Do you really want to know?”
Before Chai Yuhu could respond, Ye Anran beside them said: “Captain, just tell him. He’ll forget anyway later.”
Chai Yuhu nodded, “I want to know.”
“What you’ve provoked is a ghost – a Hair-Eating Spirit. It’s fixated on you. You’re carrying heavy Yin energy and could die at any time.”
Thanks to the tea, although Chai Yuhu was internally screaming “what the hell,” his facial expression remained relatively calm.
With a miserable look, he asked, “If I stay here, will I be safe then?”
“This is at least the safest place in the city. It absolutely won’t dare come looking for you here. During this period, our department members will impersonate you. What you need to provide is some personal information about yourself to help deceive the Hair-Eating Spirit.”
“Impersonate? How?” Chai Yuhu looked at Shen Huaizhou, Yu Wei, and Dai Xingyu, feeling that neither their builds nor facial structures could possibly resemble his.
And if they were to impersonate him, wouldn’t the sacrifice to their hair be tremendous?
Chai Yuhu’s eyes began wandering toward Shen Huaizhou’s beautiful hair again.
Xie Qingling said, “There’s no need for you to worry about that. I just need to make an imprint of your face.”
As she spoke, she took out a piece of skin and draped it over Chai Yuhu.
The skin seemed to possess a life of its own, automatically wrapping around Chai Yuhu before gradually transforming into an exact replica of his face even his sparse eyebrows and hair were perfectly “imprinted.”
“Done,” Xie Qingling said.
All the doubts Chai Yuhu had been harboring were swallowed back down his throat the moment he witnessed the miraculous effect of this skin.
Just like that, Chai Yuhu told Xie Qingling everything about his daily routines, habits, social media accounts, gaming profiles, and even his bank card payment passwords.
For the sake of his precious life, he had completely become a person with no privacy left.
Tuesday, 2:30 PM.
“Chai Yuhu” walked out of the office carrying a canvas bag.
Wednesday, 11:00 PM.
The lights in the office were still on.
Everyone in the department was present and on standby, except for Xie Qingling, who was disguised as Chai Yuhu.
They were ready to mobilize at any moment to support Xie Qingling.
Although Xie Qingling had claimed that the Hair-Eating Spirit was likely just a weak ghost that she could handle alone, compared to her confidence, the others were clearly quite worried about unexpected situations.
With nothing else to do, they naturally couldn’t just stand by idly while Xie Qingling faced danger alone.
At 11:30 PM, Chai Yuhu, unable to sleep, came downstairs looking for something to do to pass this chaotic, endless night.
Seeing everyone gathered in the hall, he was taken aback.
“Is no one sleeping…?”
Before anyone could answer, Chai Yuhu quickly realized they were all there to protect him.
While Xie Qingling was not only covering his shifts during the day but also enduring ghostly disturbances in his apartment at night, he himself was resting easy without a care. The thought made him feel deeply uneasy.
He walked over and sat among them, hanging his head dejectedly. “It’s all my fault. I don’t know why I attracted these spirits. If it weren’t for me, you wouldn’t have to work overtime.”
Ling Fang said, “If it weren’t you, it would be someone else. This is our duty.”
Chai Yuhu was still somewhat worried. Ever since learning he was haunted by a spirit, the psychological pressure had been immense. He asked, “Will she be okay?”
This “she” naturally referred to Xie Qingling.
Shen Huaizhou, crossing his arms and lounging on the sofa with his legs crossed, replied, “She should be fine. She’s very strong.”
Actually, by rights, Shen Huaizhou should have been the one to impersonate Chai Yuhu. But… Shen Huaizhou’s awakened talent was rather unique and not suitable for disguising as a man it wouldn’t fool the Hair-Eating Spirit. Dai Xingyu’s combat ability was too weak, Yu Wei was too rough around the edges, and Ling Fang… was also too weak. So, the task fell to Xie Qingling.
Hearing this, Chai Yuhu nodded, feeling somewhat reassured, but he still found the whole situation utterly frustrating.
He couldn’t help but complain, “To be honest, I don’t understand it myself. That ghost… it eats hair. Why would it target a programmer? Isn’t it afraid of starving… I just don’t get it.”
At that moment, everyone’s gaze involuntarily turned toward him.
Yes, they didn’t understand either.
Why would a creature that feeds on hair fixate on a profession almost destined for baldness?
Ling Fang was unusually patient today. “You’ve been to that street… the one between the old and new city districts. You probably got entangled there. There were many people like you during that period, but the others were just pranks. Yours… is here to claim your life.”
Chai Yuhu’s face turned deathly pale. “Claim my life… I studied hard in school, worked diligently after entering society, always give up my seat on public transport, help elderly ladies cross the road whenever I see them. Except for yelling at elementary school kids in game voice chat, I always respect the elderly and cherish the young. Why would a ghost come for my life…”
Why?
No one could explain.
Sometimes, things just happen to coincide in ways that defy explanation.
Shen Huaizhou comforted him, “Maybe you’re just particularly unlucky.”
Chai Yuhu: “…”
Not only was he not comforted, he felt even worse.
After a moment, Chai Yuhu said dejectedly, “Fine, let’s just say I’m unlucky. If I had known that day… I wouldn’t have gone to pay my respects.”
Ling Fang suddenly looked up. “What visit?”
“About two and a half… half a month ago, my uncle passed away. I couldn’t make it back for his funeral at the time. So I chose a weekend two weeks ago to visit his burial site and pay my respects. On my way back, I passed through that street. Never thought I’d attract such a terrifying ghost.” Chai Yuhu looked utterly miserable, holding his head in his hands. “I was fine at the cemetery, so why did I have to encounter ghosts on that particular street? I’m just too unlucky!”
Dai Xingyu said, “It’s possible the ghost actually latched onto you at the cemetery. Did anything unusual happen when you were paying your respects that day?”
Something unusual?
Chai Yuhu thought for a moment, about to shake his head when he suddenly remembered something. “If we’re talking unusual… I guess when I was visiting my uncle’s grave, I got lost and passed by a row of unfamiliar graves.”
“You know how in cemeteries, all the graves look pretty similar… Then I saw this really old grave. There was a girl’s photo on the tombstone, but it was so faded you couldn’t make out her face. I saw she died at twenty, which seemed quite tragic, so I placed one of the chrysanthemums I brought at her gravesite.”
Ling Fang frowned immediately. “Did you say anything?”
“Yes, let me think… I probably said: ‘You died so young, what a pity. But I feel like I could drop dead anytime too, probably around twenty something. We’re about the same age – we could keep each other company down here.'”
The more he spoke, the more Chai Yuhu stammered, feeling chills run down his spine.
He… he… he couldn’t have actually provoked this Hair-Eating Spirit, could he?
Holy shit, holy shit!!
He was just joking!
During that period of intense overtime work, he felt like he was about to die from overwork, so he casually complained he never actually meant to keep “her” company, ahhhhh!!!
Chai Yuhu was so panicked he felt like a lump of jelly, wishing he could slap himself hard across the face. His complexion had already drained of all color. The more he recalled the details of that day, the more terrifying it became upon reflection, sending chills down his spine with belated realization.
“Chief,” Shen Huaizhou said with a cold expression, suddenly standing up, “I have a bad feeling about this.”
Ling Fang nodded and tried to call Xie Qingling back through the communication device.
However, after activating the earpiece, he couldn’t connect to Xie Qingling’s end through the communicator.
Xie Qingling was out of contact.
Ling Fang’s face turned grim. He stood up and spoke rapidly, “Everyone, prepare for action.”
Hopefully, they were just overthinking it.
After speaking, Ling Fang immediately picked up the case prepared earlier by his feet. Without daring to delay even a minute, the group set out together.
Thursday, midnight.
Just after midnight, Xie Qingling fell into a deep sleep.
In her dream, the Hair-Eating Spirit indeed appeared.
Xie Qingling grabbed the Hair-Eating Spirit’s hand and said, “Finally caught you.”
The Hair-Eating Spirit’s three eyes widened in shock, clearly showing its turbulent emotions and an expression of utter disbelief.
However, instead of immediately fleeing the dream, it clung to Xie Qingling’s hand, trembling as it pleaded, “Save… save me…”
“Save me… save me…”
