Dear Readers,

Due to a temporary website issue, starting around April 3, all novels started before January 2025 will be temporarily moved to the drafts folder for approximately 3–4 weeks. Unfortunately, this novel is included in that list.

In the meantime, I will be uploading the latest advance chapters to my Ko-fi account for my supporters. Regular updates will resume as soon as the site allows.

Thank you for your patience and support!

The order for the luxurious birdcage worth nearly four figures is placed.

But it’s not over yet. In the following time, Li Pu asks Bai Gaoxing to buy a stand, snacks, toys… Although Bai Gaoxing is determined to pretend to be a silly bird, he can’t help but indulge because it’s for his own use.

It’s okay, right? Anyway, he’ll just quack when he sees something he likes, Bai Gaoxing thinks uncertainly.

While standing on the man’s shoulder, he tilts his head to gauge Li Pu’s expression. Li Pu is very calm and shouldn’t have doubted his performance just now.

Bai Gaoxing breathes a sigh of relief and carefully moves back to the sofa from Li Pu’s shoulder, awkwardly arranging his feathers.

However, this silence doesn’t last long. The man gets up from the sofa and walks to the living room balcony.

Through the gauze curtain, Bai Gaoxing sees a folding chair on the balcony, surrounded by easy-to-grow flowers and plants, with a small table for storing sundries next to it—perfect for basking in the sun on a sunny day.

What a delightful setup, he can’t help but sigh.

Li Pu sits down on the chair. If someone familiar with Li Pu saw him, they would immediately understand that he is trying to sort out his thoughts and has begun to fall into his own world. However, Bai Gaoxing thinks that Li Pu is going to sunbathe after a nap. He stares at him for a while but soon feels sleepy himself and takes a nap on the sofa.

At this moment, no one knows that Li Pu’s heart is a little turbulent.

He hadn’t expected Dabai to be so close to him—when the furry parrot’s head rubbed against his face, he was only surprised. But he hadn’t anticipated that Dabai would be so smart. It could talk, ask for water, and choose what it liked…

It seems that raising a parrot is simpler than he thought.

Li Pu turns off the screen of his mobile phone, looks at the flower bed square downstairs, and falls into deep thought.

He has always had the habit of taking a vacation between two projects, not only to calm himself but also to distance himself from the previous role. Being too immersed in a role was how people who knew him described him, and it is indeed true. This is both an advantage and a disadvantage. After finishing a work, he can’t quickly jump into the next scene like others but needs time to relax.

It is precisely because he often loses track of time while relaxing that he never dares to keep pets requiring constant attention, fearing he won’t be able to care for them. But not long ago, the role he participated in was more complex and profound, so he received the doctor’s advice—to keep a pet that can interact. Dabai was the gift his friend insisted on bringing him after hearing about it.

Thinking of this, Li Pu looks back and sees that the snow-white ball has found a corner and is sleeping soundly on the sofa. It must be said that this is indeed a very satisfying gift. The place that was once so desolate it couldn’t be called a “home” now has a bit of vitality, making him look forward to seeing what it will be like in the future when Dabai grows plump and recovers from its psychological trauma.

Li Pu smiles, glances away, and then falls into his own thoughts as usual.

…

Bai Gaoxing tilts his head and wakes up from his sleep. The living room lights are on, and it is pitch black outside. What time is it?

Bai Gaoxing looks around in a daze and sees that the clock on the wall points to seven o’clock.

It is so late! He suddenly feels energized. No wonder he is so hungry. He shouts casually, “Who’s going to the cafeteria? Bring me a meal!”

The room is quiet, and no one responds.

Bai Gaoxing mutters to himself. Just as he wonders if everyone has gone out, a man in an apron, holding a spatula, walks into view.

What the hell! What the hell! What the hell!

Bai Gaoxing shudders and wakes up instantly. He almost forgets that he has traveled through time and just shouted subconsciously.

What should I do… Will he hear me?

Bai Gaoxing watches Li Pu approaching nervously, his feathers fluffed up like a freshly rolled white glutinous rice ball. As expected, Li Pu looks around, then turns to him and asks, “Dabai, was it you who spoke just now?”

I want to eat your meal…!

Bai Gaoxing wants to say something but hesitates. He watches Li Pu finish his dinner, clean up the dishes, and walk into the kitchen. Reluctantly, he moves to the bird food bowl.

Today he has only eaten two bites of ribs and a handful of melon seeds. Now, starving, he has no choice but to compromise.

Bai Gaoxing stretches out his claws and picks out a piece of bird food that looks like a small biscuit. The smell of the bird food is unappealing, and its taste is likely to be unsatisfactory.

Bai Gaoxing struggles mentally for a long time before slowly putting it into his mouth. With a “crack,” his beak crushes the grain, and he tastes it.

Huh.

Bai Gaoxing opens his mouth slightly and savors it. He wonders if it’s because of his current state, but he actually finds it tastes okay.

It seems he doesn’t have to worry about starving to death—this is Bai Gaoxing’s first thought.

No, he can’t just give in. He hasn’t tasted all the human delicacies yet!—this is his second thought.

As a result, by the time Li Pu comes out, half a bowl of bird food is already empty.

Bai Gaoxing knows he is in trouble when he sees Li Pu’s thoughtful expression. Sure enough, the next moment, the bowl is full again.

He stares at the bowl in silence for a long time and finally returns to eating sunflower seeds.

After dinner, it is time for activities.

Bai Gaoxing watches Li Pu walk slowly on the treadmill for half an hour, then sit on the sofa, appearing lost in thought.

It is too quiet. Bai Gaoxing feels uncomfortable. Back in his old life, he would play games, watch videos, or read books in the study room at night. The lights were bright, there were many people, and he would have a midnight snack and play poker with his roommates.

Doesn’t this person have any entertainment?

Bai Gaoxing thinks that the film emperor must be dealing with some troubling issues. The entertainment industry is known to be competitive, and there might be rivals causing trouble.

He notices Li Pu’s occasionally furrowed brows and stern expression, making his handsome face seem devoid of warmth.

But after an hour, he realizes something is wrong.

During these long sixty minutes, Li Pu has barely moved. At most, he changes his posture, sometimes closing his eyes, sometimes looking out the window.

Combined with what the man named Peter Wang said about “doctors,” and the fact that Li Pu had also been staring blankly on the balcony earlier, Bai Gaoxing feels that the man’s dazed state seems to last too long.

What did Peter Wang say again… about depression and self-harm… and in the myriad of details he finds online, there is a line saying: “Film emperor Li Pu often disappears from the public eye after filming.” The implication is vague, as if there is an unspeakable secret.

Yes, being a star is so stressful.

Bai Gaoxing looks at Li Pu sympathetically.

His memory is probably confused because he was too flustered at the beginning—there is only one truth: it’s not “himself” who is depressed, but Li Pu!

After an indeterminate amount of time, Li Pu snaps out of his thoughts and looks up to see the snow-white parrot, Bai Gaoxing, perched on the coffee table, staring intently at him with an almost eerie gaze.

?? What kind of look is that?

Author’s note:

It was a look of heartache (not)

Bai Gaoxing: I understand!
