Helping with Adventurer Party Management - Chapter 288
Dear Readers,
Due to a temporary website issue, starting around April 3, all novels started before January 2025 will be temporarily moved to the drafts folder for approximately 3–4 weeks. Unfortunately, this novel is included in that list.
In the meantime, I will be uploading the latest advance chapters to my Ko-fi account for my supporters. Regular updates will resume as soon as the site allows.
Thank you for your patience and support!
With the image of the booklet solidified, the next step is to consider how to transport the information back to the Adventurers’ Guild. The reason I take this methodical approach is that, when considering the entire job, it’s necessary to do so.
When designing a job, it is essential to follow the entire process in order, from the starting point at the grassroots level to the endpoint where payment is received. A job is essentially a flow of information and money, and if there’s a disruption or inefficiency at any point, the entire flow becomes distorted. The inefficient part is referred to as the bottleneck.
Business improvement can be rephrased as resolving bottlenecks.
Currently, the challenge I undertake in relation to distributing booklets from the church is to design a process that swiftly and accurately conveys information about monster attack sites to appropriate adventurers, facilitates their dispatch, and ensures that appropriate rewards are paid.
By promptly communicating accurate information, the efficiency of monster extermination by adventurers should dramatically improve. If this were a manufacturing job, I would want to capture metrics such as the average number of days until adventurers are dispatched, but the lack of statistical data concerning overlooked facts poses a challenge.
It seems that in this world, there’s little habit of collecting numerical data other than tax revenues, so it can’t be helped. The reports from the Adventurers’ Guild incorporate that sort of management accounting perspective, and I hope it eventually gets reflected in policy.
“How can I connect from the church to the Adventurers’ Guild…” I mutter to myself.
When lost in thought, I tend to talk to myself more.
I’d like to avoid using young villagers as messengers if possible. In the first place, young villagers are valuable resources for the village, and if they haven’t been trained to navigate areas where monsters roam, there’s a high risk that an inexperienced runner could die in vain.
Moreover, the means of transmitting the information I’ve gathered needs to change.
Even if the village priest manages to collect accurate information based on the booklet, it would be futile if the information deteriorates into a game of telephone as it’s passed on by the villagers sent on errands. I want to record it on some sort of physical medium.
First, I set aside the question of whether or not to send villagers to run errands. Each village has its own circumstances, and establishing communication methods between villages is beyond my capabilities.
I don’t consider things I can’t do. Instead, I seek the wisdom or influence of others later. That’s the trick to advancing the work.
So, how will I record the information gathered from the booklet? Since parchment is expensive, some villages may not even have it on hand for urgent situations. I want to reduce the hassle and time of procuring parchment and then writing letters.
“Hey, Sara, do you remember the tour reservation slips we used to distribute to novice adventurers?”
“Oh, the ones recorded on sticks?”
“Exactly. I wonder if we can adapt that idea.”
If we refine the questions in the booklet, we can design all the responses to be either yes/no or numerical answers. With such digital information, there shouldn’t be a problem finding enough space on thin sticks to record them.
Regarding the method of recording, we can simply include examples of how to fill out the forms in the booklet, and we can assign management numbers to the booklets distributed to each village to track which village the request is from.
While it feels like assigning management numbers to each village across the kingdom is stepping into the realm of administrative duties, there’s no point in worrying about it now, so I choose to let it go.
