- Chapter 212 - How to Protect the Brand of the Guardian's Shoes
Dear Readers,
Due to a temporary website issue, starting around April 3, all novels started before January 2025 will be temporarily moved to the drafts folder for approximately 3–4 weeks. Unfortunately, this novel is included in that list.
In the meantime, I will be uploading the latest advance chapters to my Ko-fi account for my supporters. Regular updates will resume as soon as the site allows.
Thank you for your patience and support!
While I can explain the current status of the seal on the Guardian Shoes managed by the Sword Fangs Legion, that wouldn’t help the organization grow.
It’s essential to delegate authority as much as possible, including opportunities for explanation.
“Kiriku, can you explain?” I ask, turning to Kiriku, a guard from the Sword Fang Legion who attends the meeting.
“What?! Me?” Kiriku looks surprised that he is suddenly asked to speak.
“Yeah, it’s the organization’s matter, so you should be able to explain it, right? If there’s anything lacking, I’ll fill it in.”
Having someone else explain is the first step in fostering a sense of ownership.
In addition, Kiriku, despite being an oddball who is kicked out of his family’s merchant home due to his short temper and violent tendencies, has been training in bookkeeping since childhood. He should have gained valuable insights and perspectives from working with me recently.
He also serves as a liaison between Captain Jilboa and the organization. In the military, liaison positions are reserved for the best officers, not fools.
For this reason, I believe that a man like him—hot-tempered, tall, and muscular—could be expected to possess considerable intelligence.
“Alright then… I’ll give it a shot, but please excuse my poor use of language.”
“Nobody expects you to speak like a noble,” Gorgoro interjects supportively.
“Exactly. That’s impossible. Just get on with it!” Anne encourages him.
Glaring at the two of them, Kirik begins to speak as politely as he can. “Everyone in the Sword Fangs Legion wears the Guardian Shoes. Those shoes have a seal on them, but no other shoes are allowed to have the seal. If anyone uses the Sword Fangs Legion’s seal without permission, any adventurer will know right away. There are many hopefuls who want to join the brigade among adventurers, so they inform us if someone has misused the seal. Then we track that person down and take care of them. After that, we find the craftsman who makes the shoes and deal with him too. It’s not to the extent of killing them; we just threaten them to never do it again. Since it’s a threat, we might break some equipment or shopfronts in the process. During the first month of selling the Guardian Shoes, there are so many fools trying to copy us that it is quite a hassle to deal with them, but now it’s only about two or three a month.”
“What do you do if it’s a noble? You can’t just solve things by punching them, right?” Anne asks.
“That’s when the Captain steps in. We all go to the noble’s mansion and ask for donations from those nobles who support our activities. Using the seal is part of that, right? So, it usually ends up with them saying it was the actions of their subordinates, and we get the money and leave.” Having finished his explanation, Kirik looks at me for confirmation. “Is that about it? What do you think?”
I nod and turn to Deacon Michelino for his input. “What do you think? This is the reality of rules and penalties.”
Deacon Michelino, who has been listening, frowns at what he considers a barbaric account but reluctantly nods.
“I understand. I’ll use this as a reference for church management.”
Even as he says that, there is a bitter undertone in his expression.
