- Chapter 3 - Choosing a Daughter-in-law
“Father, do I really have to get married and have children?” Wu Rulong said, looking troubled and somewhat reluctant. He had always been focused on cultivating immortality and had never considered the matters of romance and family. If it weren’t for his father’s suggestion, he probably wouldn’t even have thought about it.
Wu Hao sighed, a hint of wistfulness in his voice, and said, “Rulong, do you remember what your mother said when she left? She said she hoped that when she returns to the Wu family, she could see a happy scene filled with children and grandchildren.”
“Moreover, such a large Wu family, with just the two of us, feels a bit too empty. So, I want to hold a grandchild. Do you understand?”
Seeing his father’s earnest and sincere demeanor, Wu Rulong couldn’t help but ponder. “You said to find a daughter-in-law, but where am I supposed to find one for you?” However, being a filial son, he gritted his teeth and agreed.
“But Father, where am I going to find a wife? Aren’t we living in the mountains right now?” Wu Rulong asked somewhat bewilderedly, having thought of something.
Wu Hao was taken aback, suddenly remembering that they had been living in these mountains for over a decade. Back then, after realizing his talent for cultivation was quite mediocre and without any special advantages, he chose to retreat to the mountains. It was here that he had met his wife, Su Qiaoran.
Reflecting on this, he realized that their secluded life might be the reason why his son hadn’t sought out a wife—he hadn’t interacted with women at all.
Thinking of this, Wu Hao coughed and then earnestly said, “Alright, since that’s the case, today I will take you to tour the nearby town. If you see any high-quality and excellent women you’re interested in, just let me know. I’ll propose on your behalf, though try to avoid those with overly powerful backgrounds.”
Wu Hao’s knowledge of the situation outside before retreating to the mountains was somewhat limited, but he was aware that the strongest city lord in town was only at the Nascent Soul stage. As long as he kept a low profile, there shouldn’t be any issues.
Hearing that he could finally go out, Wu Rulong’s eyes lit up. Eighteen years—he had been here for eighteen years and was already tired of it. Had his father not forbidden it, he might have sneaked out to play long ago.
Now that he could finally go out, how could Wu Rulong not be happy?
“Let’s go, we’ll head to the city outside,” Wu Hao said, and he began walking towards the courtyard’s exit. Wu Rulong quickly followed.
In the Xuantian Realm, much of the land was unclaimed territory. So, after retreating to the mountains to live in seclusion, Wu Hao had fenced off a large area as their courtyard. Whether by luck or some other reason, they hadn’t been troubled by any beasts over the years.
On the way, Wu Rulong was as excited as a child, looking around and touching everything. Wu Hao didn’t stop him, understanding that until the age of eighteen, Rulong had only heard about the Xuantian Realm from him and had never seen it for himself.
It wasn’t long before, under Wu Hao’s guidance, the two finally arrived at a nearby city. Above the city gate hung a sign with the three large characters: Sunset City. There was a bustling scene of pedestrians and cultivators passing through the gates.
Wu Rulong, seeing other humans apart from his father for the first time, was immediately thrilled and shouted, “Dad, look, people!”
“Alright, alright, I see them,” Wu Hao responded, feeling a bit awkward as he noticed some odd glances from the people around them. He quickly calmed his excited son.
He realized it was his fault for not bringing Rulong to Sunset City more often.
Searching through his Storage Ring, although most of it contained Supreme Spirit Stones, there were quite a few low and mid-grade Spirit Stones as well. Sunset City’s rule was that common folk had to pay an entrance fee of fifty coins, while cultivators needed to pay five low-grade Spirit Stones. For cultivators with a lower cultivation level, this made entering and exiting Sunset City challenging.
After paying ten low-grade Spirit Stones, Wu Hao took Wu Rulong into Sunset City. This was also Wu Hao’s first time entering a human city again in eighteen years.
Once inside Sunset City, Wu Hao and Wu Rulong witnessed a grand and bustling scene filled with vendors and pedestrians. Although most were common people, there were also quite a few cultivators—about two out of every ten people.
Seeing this scene, Wu Rulong began planning his next steps. At that moment, Wu Hao spoke up, “Let’s go find an inn to get a room and rest for a bit. Finding a daughter-in-law isn’t something that can be rushed.”
After all, selecting a daughter-in-law couldn’t be done carelessly. Wu Hao thought she should at least be at the Foundation Establishment stage to be worthy of being his son’s wife. Although higher cultivation levels made it harder to have children, offspring with Spiritual Roots were more likely when the cultivation level was higher.
Regarding this, Wu Rulong naturally followed his father’s lead. The pair soon arrived at an inn, astonishing the innkeeper as they paid with twenty mid-grade Spirit Stones to book two top-tier rooms.
In the inns of Sunset City, there are rooms specially provided for cultivators, categorized into four grades: Heaven, Earth, Black, and Yellow. The Yellow room costs just one low-grade Spirit Stone per day, but one can only rent it for a day at a time. The Black room costs ten low-grade Spirit Stones per day, the Earth room costs fifty, and the Heaven room costs one hundred low-grade Spirit Stones per day. Wu Hao and his son weren’t sure how long they would stay, so they booked for ten days.
Sitting on the bed of the Heaven room, Wu Hao waved his hand to summon the innkeeper.
“Dear guest, what can I do for you?” the innkeeper asked nervously as he faced Wu Hao. He knew that anyone who could casually pay with twenty mid-grade Spirit Stones without a second thought must be extraordinary.
Wu Hao paused to consider before he spoke, “Innkeeper, this is my first time in Sunset City. My purpose here is to find a wife for my son. Do you have any suggestions? Don’t worry, I’m only looking for someone with a cultivation level of at least Foundation Establishment and a Spiritual Root of mid-grade or higher. The terms can be negotiated, of course. But the person’s character should be decent.”
“If you can suggest someone suitable, this mid-grade Spirit Stone will be your reward.”
Upon hearing this and seeing Wu Hao take out another mid-grade Spirit Stone, the innkeeper’s eyes lit up instantly.
He was a cultivator himself, though only just reaching the Foundation Establishment stage. Still, he couldn’t detect Wu Hao’s aura, which indicated that Wu Hao’s cultivation level was far above his, likely at the Nascent Soul stage given how casually he handled the Spirit Stones.
Thinking this, the innkeeper’s heart raced with anxiety, and he hurriedly declined, “Serving you is an honor, senior. Please take back the Spirit Stone.”
He genuinely feared that if he accepted the Spirit Stone, Wu Hao might dispose of him afterward. For safety’s sake, he couldn’t take it.
But Wu Hao immediately looked stern, “Innkeeper, if you refuse to accept my Spirit Stone, are you looking down on me?”
With that, Wu Hao released a faint aura from his body, filling the innkeeper with terror. In his perception, Wu Hao’s aura was like a stormy sea, while he was just a small boat, constantly at risk of being overturned.
Recognizing this, the innkeeper dared not refuse further. He quickly accepted the mid-grade Spirit Stone and then relayed the identities and information of the prominent ladies in Sunset City.
PS: Sincere apologies to the readers. It was the author’s oversight to forget about the existence of low-grade Spirit Stones. Also, for the current protagonist, there’s not much difference between Supreme Spirit Stones and low-grade Spirit Stones. Neither he nor his son needs them, and giving them away to descendants wouldn’t yield feedback. Hence, for the protagonist, there’s no difference in giving away Supreme or low-grade Spirit Stones since he has no use for them. The author did not anticipate that many would consider this a flaw. This will be corrected moving forward. Apologies for the oversight.
