- Why Do All the Villains Look at Me Like This?
- Chapter 19 - One Sentence Broke Wu Zian’s Defense
Meng Xuexiao burst out of the treatment room and didn’t dare stop to catch his breath until he had run dozens of meters away. Leaning against the trunk of a large tree, he looked back, still filled with lingering fear. The treatment room had shrunk to a tiny white dot in the distance.
To facilitate the medical staff’s work, the treatment room had been deliberately placed in a remote and quiet corner of the Federation Military Academy. A large area of trees had even been planted around it for sound insulation. Now, the only sound in the entire area was the rustling of leaves. There wasn’t a trace of human noise.
It felt like a dead zone, and the treatment room, that lone white dot protruding from the land, looked from afar like a grave mound. Even from dozens of meters away, just staring at it filled Meng Xuexiao with a sense of suffocation.
His back even felt cold. But it wasn’t supposed to be cold.
The Federation Military Academy never skimped on students in this regard, issued uniforms were more than enough to resist the chill. Meng Xuexiao slowly bent his arm and reached behind him, and sure enough, what met his hand was dampness. His uniform had been soaked through with cold sweat. All of it felt like he had just taken a walk at the very gates of hell.
Meng Xuexiao exhaled and began walking toward the dormitory building. His steps were heavy, his legs stiff.
During the confrontation with Chu Sinian, every muscle in his body had tensed up so much that now, even after trying to relax, he felt like a giant stone block while walking—awkward and sluggish. He walked with slight stiffness to the dormitory door, and only when he saw it did he finally feel a trace of relief.
Right now, Meng Xuexiao just wanted to throw himself onto his bed and get a good sleep. He took out the key to unlock the door. The lock clicked with a crisp ka, but the door didn’t open.
The boy’s gaze slowly lifted and saw a fist resting against the door. The person wasn’t using much force, yet the door was being pressed shut tightly.
Meng Xuexiao’s fingers uncurled one by one from around the key, letting it sit loosely in the lock. Then he turned to the person standing beside him, “…Senior Wu Zian.”
He really should’ve checked a lunar calendar before heading out today—just escaped from the wolf’s den, only to enter the tiger’s lair.
Wu Zian withdrew the fist pressed against the door, the corners of his mouth lifting to reveal a row of white teeth, “You really are something.”
Meng Xuexiao froze at that line for a second, then suddenly remembered what Chu Sinian had said earlier. It was Wu Zian who had ordered someone to tamper with his theory class score, which had not only caused him to be targeted by the theory teacher but also cost him his team in the group combat class.
Chu Sinian was indeed a man full of schemes, but he had no reason to lie about something like this. If he really wanted to harm him, all it would take was a flick of a finger—why go to such trouble? What’s more, Wu Zian’s words just now confirmed it.
“I’m something? Thanks, but I think you’re even more impressive, Senior Wu Zian!”
More than impressive! He was so capable, he could outdo them all! Wu Zian, Chu Sinian, the Enforcer—not a single one of them wasn’t terrifying in their own way!
Meng Xuexiao considered himself to have done nothing out of line since arriving at the Federal Military Academy. His overall grades were stable but not outstanding, and his social circle was very small. Aside from Shen Zekai and Xue Chen, he hadn’t really interacted with anyone else.
He just didn’t understand—why was it that all the way up to villain-level bosses like the Enforcer and Chu Sinian, and all the way down to school bullies like Wu Zian, everyone insisted on picking on him? Was it just because he was F-grade—so they all picked the softest persimmon to squeeze?
Those words, full of anger, shot out like a bullet and exploded right by Wu Zian’s ears, causing the young man to freeze in place for a moment. Like a lion suddenly staring at a gazelle that had unexpectedly flared up and charged at him, horns first. He paused, mouth slightly open.
Wu Zian’s strength, talent, and influence had long placed him at a decisive advantage when facing most people. He was used to forcing his prey into submission by overwhelming superiority—crushing them into obedience, into servitude, so he could achieve his aims.
That method was simple, brutal, and cruel, but effective. Because, just like the food chain, it was a natural law born of the wild. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have allowed his subordinates to tamper with Meng Xuexiao’s scores, isolating him from others. That way, Meng Xuexiao would be driven into a corner, with no options left, and then Wu Zian could swoop in to offer help.
By then, Meng Xuexiao would understand, the only way to live comfortably was to rely on him. Because the weak had no right to choose. But now, it was he who had lost that advantage. Meng Xuexiao had torn his plan apart and laid it bare.
Wu Zian lowered his gaze, subconsciously trying to mask that slight unease that surfaced when things slipped out of his control.
But he quickly caught his lapse and let out a scoff, pretending not to care, “Ha, didn’t think you’d actually figure it out.”
Clearly, he’d already had his underlings look into Meng Xuexiao. The guy was just an ordinary student, no background, poor physical stats, and not even favored by the teachers. Logically speaking, how could someone like that possibly know he was the mastermind behind all this?
“Is that really something hard to figure out?”
Fueled by anger, a faint red tinted the corners of Meng Xuexiao’s eyes, but the sneer on his lips was more mocking than ever. That face, already striking, now looked even more dazzling. Like a rose glazed in syrup and grilled over open flame, its crimson juices bubbling and flowing wantonly.
For someone like Wu Zian, a top-tier elite, his moment of shock and loss of composure lasted only a second. His mind snapped back quickly, and he struck directly at the most likely explanation, “It was Shen Zekai who told you, wasn’t it?!”
Wu Zian’s upper and lower molars ground against each other hard.
Of course! There’s no way it could’ve been the other students around Meng Xuexiao. They were all too afraid of getting stuck with an F-grade burden and wouldn’t even talk to him.
Yes—how else could Meng Xuexiao possibly have known it was him pulling the strings?!
It could only be that goody-two-shoes Shen Zekai!
A wave of revulsion, like having swallowed a fly whole, surged in Wu Zian’s chest.
So impressive, always ruining his plans! Always taking what he had his eyes on—just like back then, when Shen Zekai snatched away the student representative title from him!
Bloodshot veins burst in Wu Zian’s eyes as the mask of the school elite was completely torn away, leaving behind a hint of hysteria.
“Yeah, Representative Shen is really a great guy, huh? Always helping people like you for free—you must be so grateful to him, right? You looked so relaxed on your face when you got back to the dorm! He’s so great, so saintly, always protecting you—even told you about this! Then why didn’t he speak up the moment your grades were tampered with?! Or when the theory class teacher was targeting you—did he step in to keep you from being sent to do grunt work in the med bay?”
“Oh, right, when no one was willing to team up with you in practical class because of your F-level physique, he must’ve sent someone to help, right? I mean, Representative Shen is so well-connected, getting a few students to team up with you would be as easy as snapping his fingers!”
“What’s that? He didn’t help you? No way! With all the halos shining on Shen Zekai, you’re saying not a single ray reached you?”
Wu Zian let out a mocking laugh, his malice practically oozing from every word, “Back when I offered you a helping hand, you didn’t even spare me a glance. I thought it was because he was taking such good care of you.”
