Chapter 21: Pointing at Ning Wanyin

Consort Shu believed in Buddhism.

There was a strong scent of sandalwood in Jingxi Palace.

Not to mention the various fragrances from the concubines who had come to pay their respects, the air was thick with perfume.

The faint scent of Tianzhu grass was almost undetectable among the complex mixture of fragrances. Even a dog would have difficulty identifying it.

After paying her respects to the high-ranking concubines, Ning Wanyin sat down and glanced around, noticing someone unexpected.

Dan Li!
She was standing next to Li Guiren, in the position of a personal attendant.

“Sister Ning, I asked for Dan Li from the Imperial Household Department. She’s diligent and considerate, always thinking of her mistress. You drove her away, and now she’s benefited me,” Li Guiren said, looking at Ning Wanyin with a forced smile.

Dan Li looked at Ning Wanyin, suppressing her resentment.

When she was sent to the Imperial Household Department, she thought she would end up in the Laborious Warehouse, doing the lowest tasks.

But…

Li Guiren had asked for her. Li Guiren had been asking her about Ning Wanyin’s methods for seducing the emperor.

Dan Li immediately understood her purpose and told Li Guiren everything she knew about Ning Wanyin, betraying her former mistress without hesitation.

Many concubines realized what was happening and thought that Li Guiren was clever to figure it out.

Who wouldn’t want to become the next Ning Wanyin?
If they could understand her tactics, they might be able to replace her.

But Ning Wanyin thought of something else.

On the surface, Li Guiren had asked for Dan Li to gather information about her private life.

But it could also be…

Ning Wanyin understood!

She immediately looked around. Li Guiren was sitting in the second row on the right, surrounded by other Guiren, all of whom were new concubines this year.

And directly in front of her was an inconspicuous Zhaoyi.

The Zhaoyi’s face was pale, and she seemed uncomfortable, but she was trying to endure.

Ning Wanyin was about to speak when she saw a red stain spreading on the Zhaoyi’s blue dress.

“Blood!” The Zhaoyi’s attendant screamed.

The concubines around them turned to look and quickly stepped back when they saw the bloodstain.

Consort Shu stood up, looking surprised. “Liu Zhaoyi, what’s wrong with you?”

“Is this your period? Liu Zhaoyi, you’re so careless! You’ve caused a scene,” Fang Zhaoyi said, turning away in disgust.

Liu Zhaoyi looked down at the bloodstain on her dress and turned pale.
“Imperial physician… imperial physician… my child…”

Child?

When these words were spoken, the palace fell silent.

What?
Liu Zhaoyi was pregnant?

“What child are you talking about, Liu Zhaoyi?” Consort Shu looked confused.

Liu Zhao Yi was already crying, anxiously shouting, “Please, Your Ladyship, send for the imperial physician… Your servant is pregnant, and I beg you to protect the imperial heir.”

When the words “imperial heir” were spoken, Consort Shu couldn’t ignore it anymore. “Send for the imperial physician immediately!”

The first to arrive at Jingxi Palace was female physician Sun.

She had almost reached the palace gate when she heard that a concubine was bleeding. She hurriedly rushed over. Liu Zhaoyi was carried to the inner hall of Jingxi Palace, and Physician Sun busily administered acupuncture and medication to stabilize the fetus.

The concubines were all waiting in the outer hall.

After a while, the experienced head of the Imperial Hospital and others arrived.

“His Majesty has arrived!” A eunuch’s voice echoed from outside.

The concubines all bowed and greeted, “We pay our respects to the Emperor. May the Emperor live forever.”

The Emperor’s face was stern, and he sat down in the main seat without acknowledging anyone. He coldly looked at Consort Shu. “How do you manage the harem? Such a mistake has occurred.”

“Please forgive me, Your Majesty. I failed to detect Liu Zhaoyi’s pregnancy in time and didn’t take good care of her. It’s all my fault,” Consort Shu knelt down to apologize.

Cen Jieyu bowed and chimed in, “Your Majesty, Liu Zhaoyi knew she was pregnant but didn’t inform Consort Shu. The imperial heir’s safety was compromised due to her own carelessness.”

The Emperor glanced at them coldly but didn’t say anything.

At that moment, the head of the Imperial Hospital and Physician Sun came out and bowed to the Emperor.

“We pay our respects to the Emperor. Fortunately, Physician Sun arrived in time and protected the imperial heir. Congratulations, Your Majesty, the imperial heir is safe,” the head of the Imperial Hospital reported.

The Emperor’s expression softened slightly. “Reward Physician Sun heavily. Zhaoyi’s pregnancy will be entrusted to you, Zhao Yuanpan.”

“Yes!” The two physicians bowed and accepted the order.

Zhao Yuanpan continued to report, “Your Majesty, Liu Zhaoyi almost had a miscarriage due to a medication that caused fetal damage.”

Medication?

Liu Zhaoyi’s personal attendant immediately knelt down. “We beg the Emperor to avenge our mistress! Someone is trying to harm her!”

The Emperor’s voice was cold. “Investigate!”

The imperial physicians went to investigate the incense burned in Jingxi Palace today and checked the concubines and servants closest to Liu Zhaoyi. Soon, they narrowed down the investigation to Dan Li.

“The sachet you’re wearing…” Female Physician Sun picked up the sachet that Dan Li was wearing and opened it, her expression changing instantly. “Tianzhu grass! There’s Tianzhu grass in it! Tianzhu grass can cause a pregnant woman to miscarry.”

Consort Shu immediately looked at Dan Li, her voice filled with anger. “So it’s you, this wretched servant, who’s been plotting to harm Liu Zhaoyi!”

Dan Li’s face turned deathly pale, and she knelt down, kowtowing. “I’m innocent! Li Guiren loves fragrance, and she ordered all her palace maids to wear sachets. I was given this sachet by Li Guiren’s palace.”

“What nonsense are you spouting!” Li Guiren’s face was shocked, and she knelt down in front of the Emperor, crying out in protest.
“I’ve never had any dealings with Liu Zhaoyi, and I didn’t know she was pregnant. How could I harm her?”

Xue Zhaoyi’s heart sank when she saw this scene. Li Guiren was her person, and if she was implicated, it would inevitably raise suspicions about her.

“As far as I know, Tianzhu grass can not only cause miscarriage but also severely harm the body and lead to infertility. Li Guiren has already been harmed by this poison. I suspect that someone intentionally harmed Li Guiren and accidentally harmed Liu Zhaoyi. Liu Zhaoyi’s pregnancy was a secret, and none of us knew about it. Who could have predicted it and plotted to harm her?” Xue Zhaoyi spoke calmly and logically.

Many concubines found her words convincing.

Liu Zhaoyi was rarely favored, and no one had expected her to become pregnant!

If someone really wanted to harm her, it wouldn’t make sense for them to let their palace maid carry the poison.

“What Xue Zhaoyi said makes sense! Your Majesty, please see the truth. I’m innocent,” Li Guiren cried, her eyes brimming with tears.

Fang Zhaoyi suddenly chimed in, “This palace maid used to belong to Lingxue Pavilion…”

Li Guiren’s eyes widened in understanding, and she glared at Ning Wanyin angrily. “It’s you! You’re the one who deliberately drove her away. I understand now. I understand everything.”

She kowtowed to the Emperor, pounding her head on the ground. “Your Majesty, please see the truth. Dan Li is Ning Wanyin’s person! She’s following Ning Wanyin’s orders to harm me. I’m innocent!”

All eyes fell on Ning Wanyin.
