Chapter 16: My Cousin Won’t Kill Me Again, Right?
Ning Wanyin stood up from the brocade stool, and Lian Rui quickly supported her. “Mistress, where are you going?”
“I’m going to pay my respects to the Emperor,” Ning Wanyin said.
Xiao Guizi was surprised and hesitated to speak. “Dan Li was already chased away. If you go now, the emperor won’t see you. It will only add to his annoyance…”
Ning Wanyin didn’t explain further and walked straight out.
Xiao Guizi just offered one more piece of advice without stopping her.
He couldn’t control what Ning Meiren did, and it was better for him to find a new mistress as soon as possible.
Lian Rui supported Ning Wanyin out of Lingxue Pavilion and ran into Li Jieyu, who had just returned, at the entrance of Yonghe Palace.
“Oh!” Li Jieyu pretended to fall to the ground as soon as she saw Ning Wanyin.
“Mistress!” The palace maid accompanying her quickly went to support her.
“What happened to you, Mistress?”
“Ning Meiren collided with me…” Li Jieyu pointed at Ning Wanyin, looking aggrieved and shouting loudly.
“Ning Meiren, even if you’ve lost favor, you can’t take it out on me! You deliberately collided with me!”
Ning Wanyin’s dark eyes gazed at her coldly. “I didn’t touch you.”
“It was you who collided with me!” Li Jieyu repeated, then ordered the two eunuchs accompanying her.
“Lower-ranking concubine deliberately collided with a higher-ranking one. Come and slap her mouth!”
Li Jieyu had just returned from visiting the Imperial Garden with a group of concubines, including Xue Zhaoyi.
There were too many people trying to curry favor with Xue Zhaoyi.
She couldn’t even get a word in edgewise.
So, she deliberately provoked Ning Wanyin to give her a hard time.
The two eunuchs rushed forward to hit Ning Wanyin.
Lian Rui quickly stood in front of Ning Wanyin, angrily shouting. “Don’t you dare touch my Mistress! Get out of the way!”
But she couldn’t block the two eunuchs alone.
Ning Wanyin didn’t panic. She told Lian Rui, “Go and ask the emperor for help. Don’t worry about me.”
Lian Rui looked worriedly at Ning Wanyin but nodded when she saw that Ning Wanyin was calm.
With their long-standing tacit understanding, Lian Rui knew that in critical moments, it was best to follow Ning Wanyin’s instructions.
Lian Rui quickly turned around and ran towards Qianxin Hall.
The mention of the emperor’s name seemed to give the two eunuchs pause. They looked at each other uncertainly and then at Li Jieyu.
“If the emperor comes later…”
Li Jieyu stood up with the help of her palace maid and sneered.
“She went to ask for help once today, and did the emperor care? Hmph, a concubine who has lost favor thinks she can intimidate others? Slap her mouth!”
Just as Li Jieyu finished speaking, a clear voice rang out. “Stop!”
Tang Miaoling, dressed in blue, walked out from the bamboo forest path.
A quarter of an hour ago, she had been lingering near Yonghe Palace, holding a bottle of ointment she had brought for Ning Wanyin to reduce bruising and swelling.
Qiu Xia was puzzled. “Ning Meiren has lost favor and is disliked by the Empress Dowager. Why are you going out of your way to help her?”
“Oh, you don’t understand,” Tang Miaoling sighed.
She knew the consequences of offending the Empress Dowager, but offending her cousin was a death sentence!
She wasn’t sure if she had avoided being killed by her cousin. She thought she hadn’t done enough!
So, Tang Miaoling tried to think of a way to show her loyalty and sisterly love to Ning Wanyin, using her memories from her past life.
When everyone thought her cousin had lost favor, only she, as her cousin’s older sister, would show her kindness and sympathy.
She had already gone this far!
Her cousin shouldn’t kill her now, right?
“You’re close to Ning Meiren, so why did you insist on moving out of Yonghe Palace?” Qiu Xia asked, even more puzzled.
“You don’t understand,” Tang Miaoling sighed again.
Who wouldn’t be afraid of living next to someone who killed people as easily as killing chickens?
And one of the people she killed was her own family member.
Qiu Xia was completely confused. She really couldn’t understand what was going on in this Young Lady’s mind.
Maybe she was too old to keep up with the young generation’s thoughts?
Tang Miaoling was really scared of her cousin. She had been lingering nearby for a while, silently repeating “my cousin is kind and gentle” to herself, and finally gathered the courage to bring Ning Wanyin some medicine.
When she saw Li Jieyu deliberately provoking Ning Wanyin, she couldn’t help but intervene.
“Stop! I just saw that Ning Meiren didn’t touch you. You deliberately fell down!” Tang Miaoling glared at Li Jieyu, then looked at Ning Wanyin, and her tone softened slightly.
She quietly took two steps back, away from Ning Wanyin, and continued to shout at Li Jieyu. “You’re slandering Ning Meiren!”
Li Jieyu was surprised that Tang Miaoling would defend Ning Wanyin.
Although they were cousins, Tang Miaoling didn’t seem to be in a hurry to move out.
Maybe their relationship was really good.
Her personality had changed so drastically, and she had become completely different.
Ning Wanyin would never let her guard down just because someone showed her kindness.
There were many people who pretended to be friendly but stabbed you in the back.
She remembered people’s kindness, but she wouldn’t let her guard down because of it.
The commotion outside the door alerted the palace maids and eunuchs in Lingxue Pavilion, but they didn’t dare to move.
They didn’t want to offend Li Jieyu for the sake of a concubine who had lost favor.
Just as the situation was at a stalemate…
“The Emperor is arriving!” A eunuch shouted from a distance.
Li Jieyu looked up in shock, and the imperial entourage came into view.
The dragon flags and imperial umbrella stood tall, and a man in a bright yellow dragon robe sat on the imperial sedan chair.
He had a handsome face, but his expression was stern and imposing.
“Concubines, pay your respects to the Emperor!”
Everyone knelt down.
Helian Qi got down from the imperial sedan chair and walked straight to Ning Wanyin.
He had heard Lian Rui’s plea and had hurried the eunuchs to come quickly.
But when he saw Ning Wanyin, he knew his worry was unnecessary.
The woman stood calmly, without any tension or fear.
It seemed that he was the one who was anxious.
“I heard that Li Jieyu wanted to punish you, but you seem quite calm,” Helian Qi said, looking at Ning Wanyin with a voice that was as clear as a spring.
Ning Wanyin looked up at him, her eyes shining with a mixture of joy and obedience. “Because I know that Your Majesty is fair and will definitely do justice for me.”
Helian Qi couldn’t help but smile.
She was intelligent and calm, and she could even praise him.
The Ning family was indeed interesting.
Helian Qi stretched out his hand and helped Ning Wanyin up. Then he said slowly, “Li Jieyu, you slandered a concubine. Demote her to Guiren.”
“Your Majesty, it’s not true! Ning Wanyin collided with me, and Tang Miaoling is her cousin, so she testified falsely for her…” Li Jieyu shouted in protest.
Helian Qi ignored her and continued. “Move out of Yonghe Palace.”
