The Chi family had a tradition of staying up late on New Year’s Eve, with the whole family gathering together in a lively atmosphere. Chi Jianyue had no interest in watching the Spring Festival Gala with the elders, so she shooed away a few younger relatives and sat in a corner of the sofa, lazily playing with her phone.

She sent Ting Wan a photo of the family reunion dinner and asked what she was having for dinner. However, she didn’t receive a reply for a long time, which made her unable to help but think about various possibilities. She wondered if Ting Wan had eaten well or not. She couldn’t help but imagine a lonely and desolate picture of Ting Wan spending New Year’s Eve alone at home, which almost broke her heart.

Before her fingers could react, she impulsively made a phone call. The ringtone went on for a while.

“Hello… Jianyue, what’s up?” Ting Wan’s gentle voice unexpectedly came through, accompanied by a noisy background, sounding like she was outdoors.

“You’re outside? I sent you a message and you didn’t reply for so long. I thought something happened,” Chi Jianyue said.

Her coquettish voice quickly attracted the attention of the surrounding family members. Chi Jianyue covered the phone and got up, walking to a place where no one was around.

“Sorry, my phone ran out of battery earlier. I just managed to borrow a power bank,” Ting Wan apologized.

“No need to apologize, I didn’t blame you,” Chi Jianyue muttered softly. “Did you have your New Year’s Eve dinner? Why did you think of going out?”

Snowflakes were falling in the city, and the lively streets were covered in red elements, creating a festive atmosphere. Most people who were outside at this time were in pairs. Ting Wan exhaled a breath of cold air, a smile unknowingly appearing on her face. “Because I thought being alone at home is pitiful?”

A strange silence fell on the other end of the phone. After a while, Chi Jianyue’s muffled voice came through. “I should have stayed with you in N City.”

“It’s okay.” Ting Wan walked on a completely unfamiliar road, her steps showing no hesitation. Not far away, a crowd had gathered in the square, and a giant clock was displayed on the central screen. It wouldn’t be long before the countdown welcomed the new year. “Being with your family is more important, Jianyue. It’s just…”

“What?” Chi Jianyue seemed to faintly hear a familiar dialect from Ting Wan’s end, furrowing her brows in confusion.

“After you’re done spending time with your family, can you spare some time to be with me?” Ting Wan asked.

…

“Grandpa, Grandma, I’m going out for a bit!” Chi Jianyue hung up the phone and hastily grabbed her coat before rushing out.

“Hey!” Mr. Chi’s hand reached out halfway, but before he could ask, the girl’s figure had already disappeared behind the door. “It’s almost New Year’s, what’s so urgent?”

He scratched his head, but everyone around seemed to understand the hidden meaning and exchanged knowing glances. Mrs. Chi tugged at his sleeve, giving him a disapproving look. “What could a young girl possibly have to do?”

Suddenly, it all became clear.

———–

S City Central Square is considered a local landmark, not far from the Chi family’s home. Normally, it would only take a five-minute drive to get there, but today the roads were congested, and it took nearly half an hour to reach the square.

The usually empty streets at this time were now packed with young people. Chi Jianyue finally managed to find a parking spot and hurriedly entered the square, scanning the area in search of Ting Wan’s figure.

She never expected Ting Wan to come to S City to find her.

The square was surrounded by various stalls near the flower beds, with people selling bouquets and candied hawthorns. With so many people around, finding someone was like finding a needle in a haystack. Chi Jianyue took out her phone, preparing to call Ting Wan, when her shoulder was gently tapped. She turned around and saw Ting Wan holding a string of bright red candied hawthorns, smiling at her.

“I found you first, Jianyue,” Ting Wan said.

Ting Wan had fair skin, with a few snowflakes falling on her black, long hair and shoulders. It had been some time since they last saw each other, and Chi Jianyue’s nose tingled, feeling an unexpected urge to cry. She reached out and brushed away the snowflakes on Ting Wan’s shoulder. The sparkling white flakes turned into water, cold to the touch on her fingertips.

“Why didn’t you tell me you were coming? And you didn’t bring an umbrella in the snow…” Chi Jianyue unconsciously said many words. “Is this string of candied hawthorns for me…?”

Ting Wan smiled quietly, waiting for her to finish speaking before handing over the candied hawthorns. With her now free hands, she wrapped them around Chi Jianyue and embraced her.

The fragrance of the cold air dissipated as they hugged, and the warmth was enough to dispel the chill around them. Ting Wan softly replied, “Because someone missed me.”

…

Ting Wan returned home the day after New Year’s Eve, despite Chi Jianyue’s efforts to persuade her to stay and play for a few more days. Ting Wan insisted that she had something to do in N City.

What could it be? Most shops, including ‘kilig,’ were closed for the Chinese New Year holiday. But no matter how much she asked, Ting Wan refused to reveal anything she didn’t want to. Chi Jianyue had to give up.

Finally getting through the holiday, Chi Jianyue had never felt a holiday so long and unbearable. When she returned to N City, she would cling to people, whine, and complain.

“Why are you acting like a child?” Ting Wan helplessly took her suitcase.

“I came back a few days early just to spend more time with you during your vacation. We’ve never gone out together…” Chi Jianyue complained.

Ting Wan paused in her packing, ran her fingers through her hair, and spoke somewhat uneasily, “Can you free up some time tomorrow, Jianyue?”

“Yes, of course,” Chi Jianyue instinctively replied. Then she realized what Ting Wan was suggesting and widened her eyes, her voice somewhat incredulous. “Ting Wan, are you asking me out?”

“Is that not okay?”

“Of course it’s okay!”

———-

Flowers again.

That was Chi Jianyue’s first thought when she arrived at their destination the next day.

Ting Wan loved flowers, and it was evident from the flower beds in front of ‘kilig’ and the different bouquets that adorned their home. The heavy rain had damaged most of the flowers at ‘kilig,’ and even though they had made efforts to salvage them, there was still a gap that remained. Chi Jianyue thought Ting Wan brought her here to pick out suitable flowers.

On this cold winter day, countless flowers bloomed in defiance of the season in the greenhouse. Chi Jianyue followed Ting Wan inside, feeling a bit disappointed but still appreciating the beauty of the flowers. She was curious and looked around. “Where are the staff here?”

Ting Wan shook her head. She had been acting strangely since yesterday, or more accurately, since last night. She had been secretive, not revealing anything when Chi Jianyue asked her where they were going.

“I take care of this greenhouse,” Ting Wan said.

“Really? Ting Wan, you’re amazing!” Chi Jianyue’s excitement grew, and she bent down to get a closer look at the flowers. She loved them even more because Ting Wan had personally planted them. But what made her even happier was that Ting Wan was willing to share her world with her.

She recognized the conventional roses and tulips, but there were many lesser-known flowers that she had to rely on Ting Wan to identify. Ting Wan was by her side, patiently answering her questions. After countless inquiries, Chi Jianyue suddenly interrupted her.

“Jianyue…”

Confused, Chi Jianyue turned to look at her. Sunlight poured in through the transparent glass, casting a shadow over Ting Wan’s face. A strange sensation washed over Chi Jianyue, and she unconsciously slowed her breathing.

Ting Wan reached out, revealing something she had been hiding behind her back—a jewelry box. She opened it, and the ring sparkled in the sunlight.

Chi Jianyue’s heart raced, threatening to burst out of her chest. She unconsciously clutched her clothes, her vision blurred as she watched Ting Wan’s lips move.

“I like you.”

She waited quietly for Ting Wan to finish speaking, her eyes filled with anticipation. But there was no follow-up.

Ting Wan bit her lip, her expression momentarily stiffening. Then Chi Jianyue broke into laughter through her tears. “Come on, you’re making this confession sound like a proposal.”

“But it could be,” Ting Wan said. She extended her finger towards Ting Wan, her chin lifted in a proud and confident manner. “If there were a proposal, it should be me doing it.”

End.
