Recently, Chi Jianyue had been examining the handkerchief as if it were a precious antique, trying to find any trace of clues in Ting Wan’s reactions. But all her attempts were in vain. She had an intuition that she had seen Ting Wan before or had some other connection with her, but no matter how hard she searched through her jumbled memories, nothing matched up. She swore that if someone as remarkable as Ting Wan had truly appeared in her life, she couldn’t have forgotten.

But since Ting Wan was hiding something, it meant she wouldn’t tell her. Chi Jianyue could already imagine herself holding the handkerchief and asking Ting Wan directly, only for the woman to brush it off with a gentle smile and say, “Jianyue, you’re overthinking it.” Crushing all her thoughts.

There’s no denying that human nature is greedy, always wanting more after obtaining something.

Zhuang Xiao looked surprised after hearing Chi Jianyue’s request. “I thought you wouldn’t ask me for something like this.”

Despite a day passing, she still sent Chi Jianyue the contact information she needed.

As the anniversary celebration approached, even someone like Ting Wan, who never used social media like an “old person,” began to engage in online promotion. It was the most important day of the year for ‘kilig,’ and aside from discounts, they needed to plan other activities. This included invitations, promotional graphics, and new outfits for the girls, all of which needed to be customized.

When Chi Jianyue saw Ting Wan working on her computer at home every day, she asked and learned that she was busy with the anniversary celebration. She said with a hint of sourness, “You didn’t invite me for such an important day?”

Ting Wan looked up from the screen, the winter sunlight shining in her eyes, and her light-colored pupils radiated warm light. “How does Jianyue know that you’re not included?”

She pulled up a picture, showing an invitation card with Chi Jianyue’s name on it.

A smile instinctively appeared on Chi Jianyue’s lips, but she quickly suppressed it and deliberately nitpicked, saying that the invitation card was ugly and so on. With a sweeping gesture, she took over all the preparations that Ting Wan had to do.

Ting Wan could see through her intentions, knowing that she was afraid of her working too hard. However, since Chi Jianyue was more familiar with the online world, she didn’t make a fuss. Her eyes curved slightly as she softly said, “Thank you, Jianyue.”

She needed to prepare for more important matters, such as ordering drinks and decorating the store.

Chapter 54: Arrogance is the Sharpest Weapon

Chi Jianyue has opened several restaurants under her belt and has her own experience in publicity and hype. She contacted several bloggers and found talented graphic designers with good aesthetics in the industry. It wasn’t much trouble for her, as she just had to review the results and provide feedback through emails, playing the role of a competent client. Of course, the final decision rested in Ting Wan’s hands, as ‘kilig’ was her baby.

Time flew by in busyness, and Ting Wan’s already unusual schedule became even more terrifying. It was rare to see her during the day. Often, Chi Jianyue would be leaving for her early morning classes and would bump into Ting Wan just returning and preparing to freshen up.

“Jianyue, are the invitations and posters done?” Ting Wan’s voice couldn’t hide her exhaustion, and her usually delicate face seemed a bit weary.

“The final versions have been sent to me. They’re in my email on the computer. Take a look and let me know if there are any changes needed.” The computer was placed on the coffee table in the living room, and Chi Jianyue changed her shoes at the entrance, rushing off to attend her classes.

“You’ve worked hard, Jianyue.”

She grabbed her bag and keys, ready to leave, but upon hearing Ting Wan’s words, she stopped and turned around. “Ting Wan, you don’t have to be so polite to me.”

Ting Wan always thanked her, even for trivial things in their daily lives. At first, Chi Jianyue thought it was due to her good upbringing. However, now that they had such an intimate relationship, it felt somewhat unfamiliar.

“I won’t hesitate to ask for your help in the future.”

Ting Wan paused for a moment, then smiled and responded, “Alright. Jianyue, hurry up and go to class. Don’t be late.”

However, Chi Jianyue continued to look at her without moving.

“What’s wrong?”

Chi Jianyue stared at her for a while, pouting her lips in frustration. “Good morning kiss. You owe me many days already.”

Ting Wan chuckled and realized she had applied lipstick. With a quick thought, she lightly kissed Chi Jianyue’s cheek through her fingers and then stepped back. “There you go. I’ll make up for the rest later.”

There was no trace left on her cheek, but Chi Jianyue couldn’t help but smile until she reached her class. It felt like Ting Wan’s fragrance still lingered around her.

“Hey, Ojou-sama, wipe off that love-struck expression on your face,” Zhuang Xiao nudged her with her elbow. “How did the investigation go? I’m curious.”

As she mentioned it, Chi Jianyue remembered. This class was not particularly important, so she opened her phone and saw a new email notification.

As her finger slid across the screen, the curve of Chi Jianyue’s lips gradually sank, until it completely disappeared.

The handkerchief tucked tightly against her waist in her coat pocket seemed to be heating up, making her almost breathless, her body trembling ever so slightly.

“What’s wrong?” Zhuang Xiao, nosy as always, approached with concern. Seeing Chi Jianyue’s reddened eyes, she hesitated and asked cautiously, “Are you okay?”

Zhuang Xiao rarely saw her so emotionally stirred up, and she had a pretty good idea of what kind of unpleasant content the email contained.

Chi Jianyue’s curled lashes fluttered like butterfly wings, trembling incessantly as if suppressing something. After a long while, she spoke in a hoarse voice, “I’m fine, it’s just…”

Her eyes widened slightly as she suddenly realized that the email was sent to her inbox, which meant…

Unable to sit still for another moment, she quickly packed her things, paying no attention to Zhuang Xiao’s surprised voice, and fled the classroom.

The sky was crystal clear, a rare cloudless day. But as Chi Jianyue opened the door and saw Ting Wan sitting on the sofa, her entire being felt as if it had dropped into an icy abyss.

Ting Wan’s gaze was heavy as she stared at the computer on the coffee table, her emotions unreadable.

“Ting Wan…”

Ting Wan looked up and saw Chi Jianyue’s calm expression, flashing a smile. “Why are you back?”

Chi Jianyue didn’t hold onto any false hope. After spending so much time together, she didn’t fully understand Ting Wan, but she knew which smiles were genuine and which ones were disguises before the storm.

The familiar email on the computer screen, which she had just seen not long ago, every word brutally reminding her that everyone has a past, made her close her eyes. Finally, she understood why Ting Wan never talked about her past and always kept to herself.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to…”

Ting Wan’s voice contained a smile. “You didn’t mean to investigate me?”

She tilted Chi Jianyue’s chin, looking into her misty eyes, her smile bright, but a hint of chill in her eyes. “Ojou-sama, is this fun for you?”

“To dig up someone’s long-forgotten past, does it satisfy your curiosity?”

“No… I didn’t…” Chi Jianyue’s explanations sounded feeble in the face of the truth. She couldn’t tell whether her heartache outweighed her regret, for both were present.

She shouldn’t have been so presumptuous. Others’ assessments of her arrogance were not entirely wrong. Her arrogance truly was the sharpest, most piercing weapon.

Tears welled up in her eyes, forming sudden droplets that fell in a straight line, hitting Ting Wan’s face, cold yet warm.
