The woman rested her head on Chi Jianyue’s shoulder, weak like a bird with broken wings. The intricate patterns on her hair were illuminated by the dim yellow light, blending with the darkness of the night.
A soft knitted cardigan hung on her bent arm. Chi Jianyue picked it up and helped her tidy her clothes, holding the incredibly quiet Ting Wan as they returned indoors.
The clean window revealed the entire living room, much emptier than what was remembered. There was no trace of the items that Chi Jianyue had personally chosen.
The softened emotions suddenly resurfaced, but when Chi Jianyue saw Ting Wan’s exhausted appearance after being tossed around, the sarcastic words were swallowed back.
“Shall we take a shower?” Chi Jianyue asked, adjusting the water temperature. Ting Wan finally lifted her head, her ears still burning under her hair. She whispered, “I’ll do it myself.”
Seeing that she still had the strength, Chi Jianyue didn’t say anything more and turned to walk towards the door.
“Are you leaving?”
It was late at night, the darkest hour. Although Ting Wan didn’t know why Chi Jianyue suddenly appeared in her apartment building, she instinctively thought that she would stay.
Chi Jianyue turned around at her words. “Do you want me to leave?”
Ting Wan fell silent and just watched her quietly.
An unparalleled feeling of defeat surged within her.
It was always like this. They hadn’t done anything, yet Chi Jianyue was still in her grasp. She gradually understood what Zhuang Xiao had said—that in love, the one who falls first is the loser.
She turned on her heel and finally sat down on the sofa in the living room. Not long after, the sound of trickling water came from the bathroom.
Chi Jianyue leaned back against the sofa, lost in thought. She was angry and aggrieved after that day, so she ran back to her own home and stayed there for a while. No matter when she was in the warm house, she could find some comfort. She tried hard to forget, but whenever she was alone at night, memories related to Ting Wan would flash through her mind like movie scenes, constantly reminding her that it was impossible to forget.
Chi Jianyue didn’t like to complicate things when it came to relationships, and that was exactly why she suffered so much. She didn’t want to spend too much energy obsessing over love.
Ting Wan came out wrapped in a towel, thinking that Chi Jianyue was asleep with her eyes closed. She walked over and gently pushed Chi Jianyue’s shoulder. “You can go take a shower now, Jianyue.”
The girl suddenly opened her eyes, her clear gaze resembling a pool of clear water, catching Ting Wan off guard. Then she quickly averted her gaze. “I’ll go get your clothes.”
Chi Jianyue had packed up all her belongings and sent them away, leaving nothing behind. Ting Wan found a nightgown and disposable und❤rwear that she hadn’t worn before and handed them over. Chi Jianyue looked at the obvious camisole dress that belonged to Ting Wan’s style but didn’t take it.
“What about my things?”
“What?” Ting Wan didn’t react for a moment, and then followed her gaze to where there used to be a small coffee table, designed to look like a cute animal holding a tray. “I put it away. Do you want it back?”
It was that sudden realization followed by a casual tone, as if everything related to Chi Jianyue didn’t matter at all. The question was thrown out lightly, seemingly giving Chi Jianyue the choice, but in reality, Ting Wan always held the advantageous position.
“Ting Wan…” The girl’s voice was low, almost like a sigh. “You really are a bad girl…”
“Hmm?” Ting Wan heard it very clearly, not getting angry. She smiled and said, “Jianyue, you’re the first person to describe me like that.”
She lowered her body slightly, and Chi Jianyue looked up, staring directly into those gentle and affectionate light-colored eyes. “I don’t want to be your pet.”
“I know.” Ting Wan blinked, unsurprised. It was the expected answer.
Chi Jianyue bit her lip, a dark mark appearing on her lower lip. She took a deep breath as if making a determined decision. “I want… to be your girlfriend.”
The already silent night became even more quiet. Time seemed to freeze for a moment, with no wind blowing and the air standing still.
Ting Wan stayed stunned for a while. Chi Jianyue’s expression was too serious to be joking. Confusion appeared in her eyes. “Aren’t you afraid, Jianyue?”
“Afraid of what?”
She said she didn’t want to be a pet, but even after being pushed away countless times, treated excessively, she would still come back again and again. Clearly, the perfect pet.
Ting Wan calmly averted her gaze, returning to her usual self. She placed the clothes next to Chi Jianyue and left. “Maybe the real me isn’t the one you like.”
A gust of wind passed by, carrying a hint of cold fragrance.
Ting Wan walked away quickly, not giving Chi Jianyue any time to answer. The words that were somewhat cheesy and tangled on her lips didn’t have a chance to be spoken.
—No matter what, as long as it’s you, it’s good.
