Comparing a person to a pet like a cat or a dog, with such demeaning language, seemed so natural under Ting Wan’s overly gentle tone.
So much so that Chi Jianyue didn’t initially sense anything wrong.
In hindsight, she was always proud, how could she tolerate such behavior from others? But she still agreed, just to gain a bit of affection from Ting Wan. Whether she was a cat or a dog, she would be whatever Ting Wan liked.
Sure enough, after Chi Jianyue agreed, Ting Wan’s identical smile seemed even more genuine. She gently reached out and stroked the top of Chi Jianyue’s head, just like petting a little cat or dog.
Chi Jianyue, going with the flow, leaned against her shoulder following her actions. Her innocent, watery eyes looked up at Ting Wan, and she asked, “Should I call you Master then?”
She could hardly believe that these words came out of her own mouth.
Ting Wan stiffened for a moment, then realized, “Call me however you like, Jianyue.”
She knew that Chi Jianyue was just playing along and wouldn’t actually be able to say it.
“Ting Wan,” Chi Jianyue called out and asked, “What do I need to do?”
It felt like she was dreaming. Even now, she was still a bit confused and didn’t understand the exact meaning of being a pet.
“You don’t need to do anything,” Ting Wan tilted her head slightly towards her and gave a vague answer, “Just be there for me when I need you.”
But when would Ting Wan need her? Chi Jianyue still didn’t understand.
Even as her pet, Ting Wan’s time still didn’t belong to her. It didn’t take long before Ting Wan went to another designated table. Chi Jianyue had no choice but to sit at ‘kilig’ and wait, watching as Ting Wan served table after table, drinking one glass after another. She waited until drowsiness gradually overcame her, and the restaurant became quieter, until she was the only customer left.
“Miss Chi…” Lán Líng noticed the figure in the corner. All the customers had left, and ‘kilig’ was preparing to close. Chi Jianyue was still sitting there with her head drooped, seemingly asleep. Lán Líng wanted to go over and wake her up.
“I’ll take care of it, you can go home,” Ting Wan stopped her, her snow-white cheeks tinged with a flush.
“Ting Wan Mama… are you okay?” Lán Líng had noticed since they entered the restaurant that Ting Wan hadn’t shown even the slightest signs of being drunk, let alone this flushed appearance. Just now, she had realized that Ting Wan had been drinking hastily tonight. Experienced ladies of the night wouldn’t make this kind of mistake, so it must have been Ting Wan’s own choice.
“It’s fine, you all can go,” Ting Wan repeated, standing in place. She could maintain the most elegant posture no matter what state she was in. Lán Líng and the other staff members didn’t know what else to say and bid their farewells before leaving.
With the lights and music turned off, ‘kilig’ felt incredibly empty after the crowd dispersed. The previous liveliness seemed to have vanished. Ting Wan’s smile faded from her face.
In the corner, there was still a table lamp emitting a bright light. Ting Wan walked over, and Chi Jianyue was nestled on the couch, her long lashes resting peacefully on her eyelids, her sleeping appearance serene.
Ting Wan silently watched for a while before gently waking her up. “Jianyue.”
“Mmm… are you done with work?”
Ojou-sama, who had just woken up, had a hazy expression, with a softness that she didn’t usually have. Ting Wan used her fingers to comb the strands of hair on the side of her face. “Why were you sleeping here?”
At her words, Chi Jianyue’s remaining sleepiness dissipated, and her eyes looked at Ting Wan with a mix of slight annoyance and resentment, as if feeling wronged.
“I didn’t know when you needed me.”
The meaning behind her words was clear. She didn’t know when Ting Wan needed her, so she had been by Ting Wan’s side all along.
Ting Wan’s fingers, entangled in her hair, paused at her earlobe, her chest rising and falling. Was it because she was drunk? It felt as if she could faintly hear the fluttering of butterfly wings.
