Lately, Chi Jianyue has been completely out of it, and Zhuang Xiao was the first to notice that something was off. During class, she appeared to be listening, but in reality, she hadn’t turned a page in her textbook all day. Even when they were at the dessert shop, with her favorite crème brûlée in front of her, she showed no reaction. Her eyes were downcast, and her long, curled lashes didn’t flutter even once. She mechanically dug her spoon into the dessert, taking small bites as if she were a cat eating its food.
It was obvious that she was lost in her thoughts, but this behavior was not like that of a young lady.
“What’s been going on with you lately?” Zhuang Xiao reached out and waved her hand in front of Chi Jianyue’s eyes. Her lashes flickered like butterfly wings, as if a crumbling sculpture, before she snapped back to reality.
“It’s nothing. The crème brûlée at this place isn’t soft enough. Let’s not come here next time.” She subtly changed the subject.
Seeing that she didn’t want to talk about it, Zhuang Xiao couldn’t do much. She couldn’t figure out what kind of trouble the beloved “star of the show” could be facing. It should get better in a few days.
“What about Yang Yunsong? Why didn’t he come to accompany you this weekend?” As soon as Zhuang Xiao finished speaking, Chi Jianyue’s hand paused. In that moment, Zhuang Xiao caught onto some sort of information. She widened her eyes slightly, and then heard Chi Jianyue calmly say, “We broke up.”
Zhuang Xiao observed her closely. Her makeup was impeccable, and her entire appearance was carefully put together, even the subtle curve of her curled hair was just right, no different from any other day.
This wasn’t a joke. Zhuang Xiao almost let out a curse word due to shock. These two were known as the fairy couple of N University. They had been together for two years, and their group of friends had witnessed countless displays of affection. They had just shown off their love during the Qixi Festival, and now they were breaking up??
“You… don’t like him anymore?” Although it was hard to comprehend, Zhuang Xiao instinctively thought that Chi Jianyue had grown tired of playing and dumped him.
Chi Jianyue didn’t answer that question. She simply said, “He cheated on me.”
“f❤ck!” Zhuang Xiao couldn’t hold back the curse word that had been stuck in her throat and finally blurted it out. “How did you find out?”
“He put the gift I gave him up for sale on a second-hand platform. Those shoes were a limited edition, only three pairs in the world, and this was the only pair in the country. I showed him the screenshot and he confessed,” Chi Jianyue said casually, not reacting like a normal person would after discovering their boyfriend’s infidelity. Zhuang Xiao, on the other hand, hesitated for a moment, unsure if she should feel indignant on Chi Jianyue’s behalf.
“Don’t be too upset… Yang Yunsong acted all high and mighty, pretending to be so good. Who could have expected him to be this kind of person? Men are really not good for anything,” Zhuang Xiao said, trying to console her.
Chi Jianyue shook her head. “What’s strange is that I’m not that upset. Thinking about what Yang Yunsong said in the end, I feel a bit confused. Am I really so arrogant in relationships?”
That day, when Yang Yunsong confessed, he admitted to cheating for almost a year. Most of the gifts Chi Jianyue had given him had been sold and spent on another woman. After hearing this, Chi Jianyue’s good upbringing forced her to suppress her anger and refrain from doing anything disgraceful. She was just puzzled. “Aren’t you afraid that I’ll seek revenge once I find out?” she asked.
To her surprise, Yang Yunsong retorted, “What right do you have to seek revenge? Chi Jianyue, I’ve had enough! For the past two years of being in a relationship with you, I’ve been like a servant, afraid that the slightest mistake would displease you. With your proud personality and your aversion to physical touch, is this what a normal relationship is like?”
“I always thought that he did those things for me willingly, and I thought he was a considerate person. But it turns out that in his mind, he was just afraid of displeasing me. But I’ve never asked him to do those things for me,” Chi Jianyue said.
Zhuang Xiao stood up abruptly, causing a loud commotion that drew the attention of other customers in the dessert shop. “Wait, I won’t believe it until I personally beat him to a pulp,” she declared.
She and Chi Jianyue had been close since childhood and knew each other best. Although Chi Jianyue could be a bit spoiled at times, she had the right to be. Being the precious daughter of the Chi family, she had been raised like a delicate flower in a greenhouse. This upbringing had made Chi Jianyue somewhat naive when it came to matters of the heart. She had her first relationship in college, and Zhuang Xiao was delighted that her friend had finally come to her senses. Little did they know that her first love would turn out to be such a despicable scumbag.
Ever since she started dating Yang Yunsong, Chi Jianyue remembered all his important dates and celebrated them without fail. Because she didn’t know how to navigate her first relationship, she had privately sought Zhuang Xiao’s advice multiple times. She had become the perfect girlfriend. When had the spoiled princess ever been so attentive to someone?
And the servitude! There were so many people eager to serve Chi Jianyue, but Yang Yunsong never got the chance. Zhuang Xiao was furious. Chi Jianyue found it amusing that Zhuang Xiao was angrier than she was, and a mischievous smile curled her red lips.
“No need. I’ve already arranged for someone to teach him a lesson. I’ll also report his scandalous behavior to the school. I know some people there, and he should consider himself lucky if he can graduate smoothly from now on.”
Zhuang Xiao sat down in astonishment, realizing that Chi Jianyue was still the same familiar princess. She had thought that Chi Jianyue would be at least a little upset, considering it was her first love. But it seemed that Chi Jianyue was more concerned about the words Yang Yunsong had said than the breakup itself. She didn’t seem to have any emotional reaction to the end of the relationship.
“Are you really okay…? How about I take you somewhere nice tonight to cheer you up?”
Looking into her friend’s concerned eyes, Chi Jianyue shook her head and then chuckled softly. “But you know, Yang Yunsong was right about something. It seems like I never really liked him.”
