Chi Jianyue didn’t immediately refute, but awkwardly asked a different question, “I dropped a handkerchief… Have you seen it?”
The three of them stood at the entrance, attracting attention. Ting Wan suppressed her emotions and put on her usual mask, “Let’s sit down first.”
They took their usual spot in the corner. Just as Chi Jianyue was about to wave for a drink, Ting Wan stopped her, “Jianyue, the drinks you ordered last time are all still unopened in the liquor cabinet.”
Chi Jianyue looked surprised. She thought selling drinks was just a cover for charging, but seeing Ting Wan’s natural expression, she couldn’t bring herself to say anything. So she said, “I’d like to try something else.”
Ting Wan didn’t stop her and let her go.
“Nowadays, most people carry tissues with them. Does Jianyue have the habit of carrying a handkerchief?”
Chi Jianyue was a bit hesitant to look at Ting Wan. It was strange, just sitting here like this, smelling Ting Wan’s fragrance, her thoughts always drifted elsewhere. “Sometimes, a handkerchief has uses that tissues can’t replace…”
“Oh? Like what?” Ting Wan’s voice rose, clearly with a hint of amusement. She seemed quite interested in this topic.
The bartender came over and placed the tray on the table. Ting Wan picked up a towel and meticulously wiped each of her fingers clean. Chi Jianyue’s ears turned hot, and her heart skipped a beat for no reason. She quickly tried to cover it up, “For example, the material of a handkerchief is softer… it’s not as easily torn as tissues, and it can…”
She paused, unable to come up with specific examples. She had been accustomed to using handkerchiefs since she was young, but she had never really paid attention to the differences. Fragments about handkerchiefs flashed through her mind, and Chi Jianyue felt like she should grasp onto them. Her fingers touched the cold wine glass, and she snapped back to reality.
Ting Wan held out the wine glass to her, wearing her trademark formulaic smile, “There are hotel-provided handkerchiefs in the room, I just don’t know what Jianyue’s handkerchief looks like. Maybe I mistook it for another.”
“My handkerchief has a special embroidery on it, so others would know it’s mine if they see it.” In truth, the handkerchief was just an excuse Chi Jianyue came up with on the spot. If she lost it, it wouldn’t be a big deal; it wasn’t a valuable item.
Ting Wan lowered her gaze and took a sip of her drink, “Then I probably haven’t seen it.”
The air became somewhat quiet, and Chi Jianyue suddenly didn’t know what to say. She had many curiosities about Ting Wan and wanted to learn more, but in this situation, she couldn’t bring herself to ask anything.
Chi Jianyue couldn’t help but feel that there was something special about Ting Wan’s smile, which seemed the same for everyone else. Chi Jianyue wasn’t a self-deceiving fool; she knew that all the correspondences and displays of gentleness from Ting Wan were probably the same with others as well.
Today, Ting Wan wore a white choker with a ribbon adorned with a flower that hugged her neck, with one end trailing down along her collarbone. Chi Jianyue noticed it the moment she saw Ting Wan tonight. She knew what was hidden underneath… Although she had exercised control last night, there was still a trace left on the woman’s neck. It was probably because Ting Wan realized that makeup couldn’t conceal it, so she chose to wear the choker.
Chi Jianyue didn’t know how long it would take for those marks to completely fade away. Until then, Ting Wan would have to find ways to conceal them every day. Chi Jianyue apologized softly, full of remorse, “I’m sorry…”
Ting Wan looked confused, noticing that Chi Jianyue’s gaze was fixed on her neck. She then understood, “It’s okay, don’t you think it looks good like this?”
She just smiled at Chi Jianyue, but then saw her quickly turn her head, her ears faintly reddening from between her hair strands. Ting Wan suppressed her smile and felt a bit annoyed. She habitually reached for her cigarette case, but caught a glimpse of the refined Ojou-sama who should have gone home after dressing up. She decided not to smoke.
“Excuse me for a moment.”
Ting Wan got up and walked to the entrance. Lan Ling was greeting customers and was taken aback when she saw Ting Wan standing in the dimly lit area, with a gloomy expression. “Ting Wan Mama, what’s wrong?”
“Why did you call me the moment you saw Miss Chi entering the store?”
Her voice was calm, unlike her usual self. Lan Ling couldn’t help but think, isn’t it natural to call her in this situation? Chi Jianyue has been coming to the store and being served by Ting Wan every time, and they seem quite close. She thought this way in her mind, but Ting Wan’s current attitude was really hard to read. Lan Ling pondered her response, “Miss Chi spends a lot whenever she comes to the store, so…”
Ting Wan was the Mama-san of the store, and it would indeed be better for her to serve high-paying customers.
“But there are more than just Miss Chi as high-spending customers. If she and others are here at the same time, do I have to split myself in half?” Ting Wan’s tone was sharp.
Lan Ling dared not speak. It was the first time she had seen Ting Wan like this, and she wasn’t sure if she was angry or not. After a while, Ting Wan spoke again, “If Miss Chi comes again and I’m with another customer, just arrange another hostess for her.”
Lan Ling widened her eyes slightly. With Ting Wan’s popularity, she had countless customers who specifically requested her every day. Therefore, most of the time, she would be rotating between tables, going wherever there was free time.
Even though she was puzzled, under Ting Wan’s oppressive gaze, Lan Ling could only respond, “Okay…”
