Chapter 91

After…

Yan Jingchuan stared into Chen Shu’s eyes, a fiery warmth surging wildly through his chest as he spoke recklessly: Chen Shu…

I’m here.

Chen Shu pulled him back into his embrace, dispelling the brief heaviness in his heart upon first waking. Closing his eyes, he whispered softly by Yan Jingchuan’s ear.

I’m back.

Hearing these words, Yan Jingchuan’s hand gripping his arm trembled belatedly: Why did you choose to come back?

Chen Shu chuckled softly: Asking when you already know the answer?

Yan Jingchuan pressed his lips together, thinking he wouldn’t verbally confirm the answer, but then heard the deep voice by his ear speak again.

Of course it’s because of you.

The tone was calm, matter-of-fact.

The tremor in his voice pressed close against Yan Jingchuan’s chest, penetrating the already intimate distance between them, tangling and merging into his bloodstream, burning hot and urgent, compelling Yan Jingchuan to tighten his arms again and again.

Just then, a knock came from outside the door.

Director Yan, Mr. Chen just woke up. Would you like something to eat?

After a long pause, Zhang Shi finally heard a response from inside.

Come in.

He opened the door and saw the two on the bed just separating. Adhering to the fine tradition of not looking at what shouldn’t be seen, he approached carrying a food tray.

Chen Shu threw off the covers. Yan Jingchuan helped him out of bed for a quick wash-up. When they returned, Zhang Shi had already arranged the meal on the bedside tray table.

Do you have enough strength? Yan Jingchuan helped him sit down.

Chen Shu said: Mm.

After three episodes of unconsciousness, he’d never experienced any physical discomfort upon waking. This time, though he’d slept for twenty-three days, he only felt the weakness from prolonged bed rest. During the time since waking, he’d already recovered somewhat – not to the point where he needed constant care for basic movements, let alone eating.

Yan Jingchuan handed him the chopsticks.

Chen Shu raised his hand to take them, noticing Zhang Shi standing nearby holding a second pair of chopsticks, hesitating to speak. He added: Join me.

Zhang Shi breathed a sigh of relief.

When he tried to persuade Director Yan, it never made much difference. Fortunately, Chen Shu was awake now.

After handing over the chopsticks, he tactfully turned and left.

Chen Shu looked at the exhaustion in Yan Jingchuan’s eyes: Haven’t been sleeping well again recently?

Yan Jingchuan glanced at him: I couldn’t sleep while you were unconscious.

Chen Shu said: Don’t worry, that won’t happen again.

Of course it won’t happen again. A faint curve touched Yan Jingchuan’s typically cool lips as he gazed at Chen Shu. Because your future already belongs to me.

Chen Shu laughed softly but didn’t refute him: Let’s eat.

After the meal, perhaps hearing Chen Shu’s voice, Wangcai kept scratching at the door outside, whining incessantly.

Yan Jingchuan went to open the door. A black shadow instantly rushed to the bedside, jumped onto the bed, and nestled against Chen Shu, nuzzling into his embrace.

Chen Shu smiled and petted him.

Seeing his owner awake, Wangcai was particularly excited, his cries sounding quite aggrieved, his emotions taking a long time to calm down.

The evening meal had replenished his energy, so Chen Shu changed clothes and went downstairs to walk the dog.

The sky was at dusk, the spring evening breeze still carrying a chill.

Chen Shu glanced down at Yan Jingchuan’s hand that never let go of his, and casually tucked both their hands into his pocket.

Yan Jingchuan’s steps paused slightly before he moved closer.

Wangcai wandered around in front of them, restrained by the leash, occasionally circling around the two.

Watching him, Chen Shu suddenly remembered something: Will you still return to his body?

Yan Jingchuan said: As long as he stays by my side, no.

Was it the same before? Chen Shu asked.

No, the longer I stayed with him, the more my symptoms gradually lessened. Yan Jingchuan said.

From initially not being able to maintain daily contact to now being able to go days without seeing each other, the situation was progressing more smoothly than he had anticipated.

Chen Shu understood.

Judging by Yan Jingchuan’s current recovery progress, it probably wouldn’t be long before everything returned to normal.

Suddenly.

Chen Shu felt the hand in his palm tighten slightly.

He looked at Yan Jingchuan.

Yan Jingchuan was watching Wangcai in front of him, his sharply defined profile bathed in the warm hues of the setting sun, appearing no different than usual.

What’s wrong?

Yan Jingchuan never hid anything from him: Do you regret it?

Chen Shu countered: Regret?

Yan Jingchuan didn’t look at him: Never being able to return to your own world.

Chen Shu said: No.

His unwavering answers always struck a chord with Yan Jingchuan, and this time was no exception.

Chen Shu told him: I never do things I’ll regret.

The grip in his palm loosened.

The two continued their walk through the quiet residential area.

By the time dusk fell and they returned upstairs, Chen Shu happened to receive a call from He Qiyu.

What is it?

Hearing Chen Shu’s voice, He Qiyu was stunned for a full two seconds before reacting: Chen Shu, you’re awake!!

Over these twenty-three days, Zhang Shi had been answering Chen Shu’s phone, and she called daily just to check on his condition.

As each day passed, her heart sank deeper.

Chen Shu’s strange illness had come so suddenly that even hospitals couldn’t determine the cause. She could only pray silently, never expecting such a sudden surprise today.

You’re finally awake! I’ve been worried sick this whole time!

Chen Shu then remembered that what felt like just a dream to him had actually been nearly a month in reality: Sorry.

He Qiyu quickly said: It’s not your fault at all! I’m just glad you’re awake!

Though Chen Shu didn’t sound weak, she still asked first, How are you feeling now? Is it convenient to talk? Do you need more rest?

Chen Shu said: No need.

Only then did He Qiyu calm down and briefly summarize what had happened over the past twenty-three days.

First, public outrage over Jian Haochen’s case had intensified. The police had uncovered new evidence and issued an official statement, essentially sealing Jian Haochen’s prison fate, which generated massive online reactions.

Second, Moon in the Mirror happened to premiere during this period.

Unfortunately, since Chen Shu was unconscious, the originally planned promotions couldn’t proceed on time and had to shift online.

The production team didn’t make things difficult.

Firstly, the widespread attention Chen Shu received as a victim in the Jian Haochen incident was already excellent promotion. Secondly, everyone believed this was a sequelae from the accident during the previous program recording. With Chen Shu himself unconscious, they couldn’t possibly kick him while he was down.

The news instead gave the Ready, Action! program team quite a scare.

But thanks to Yan Jingchuan’s connections, news of Chen Shu’s coma wasn’t leaked. Combined with his already scarce public appearances, even his fans noticed nothing amiss.

Fortunately, even without offline promotions, Moon in the Mirror exploded in popularity after its premiere, with discussion heat skyrocketing.

As Chen Shu’s acting debut, audience expectations were extremely high. Before the premiere, hordes of anti-fans were sharpening their knives, ready to scrutinize every frame for flaws. Yet as the episodes aired, public recognition of Chen Shu only grew stronger.

Even professionally trained actors like Mu Qingxue and Duan Xu couldn’t outshine Chen Shu’s brilliance.

Shortly after the broadcast began, Huayuan received countless film offers, and Chen Shu’s market value seemed to rise every day.

He Qiyu didn’t make any decisions for Chen Shu without authorization.

It might have been her imagination, but ever since Chen Shu joined the cast of Nameless, he genuinely hadn’t let her accept any schedules—not even after the New Year. It felt as if… he didn’t care, as if he would retire after finishing Nameless.

Moreover, when the film offers came, Chen Shu was still unconscious, so of course she wouldn’t casually engage in negotiations.

Now that Chen Shu had finally woken up, she could finally deal with the accumulated work.

But it’s too late today. I’ll come see you tomorrow, He Qiyu said finally.

Chen Shu replied, Mm.

After hanging up, he had dinner with Yan Jingchuan and then returned to the bedroom.

The bedroom had been restored to its original state while they were downstairs.

Zhang Shi had also left with everyone else, not disturbing them at this time.

After Chen Shu finished showering and stepped out, Yan Jingchuan was standing by the window in his bathrobe.

Hearing the noise, he turned to look.

Chen Shu casually toweled his hair. You go to sleep first.

Yan Jingchuan walked around the foot of the bed, came to him, and took the towel from his hand. Let me blow-dry it for you.

Chen Shu said, No need.

Just from Yan Jingchuan’s complexion when he woke up this afternoon, it was clear how irregular his schedule had been over the past twenty-three days.

Sit down, Yan Jingchuan insisted, pressing his shoulder and taking another step forward.

Chen Shu had no choice but to yield to his pressure and sit back on the edge of the bed.

Yan Jingchuan fetched the hairdryer, plugged it in, and began clumsily combing through Chen Shu’s slightly overgrown hair, which hadn’t been trimmed in a month.

Chen Shu closed his eyes.

In the darkness, the sensation of fingertips brushing through his hair felt even more distinct.

Yan Jingchuan swept the hair from Chen Shu’s forehead back, his movements gentle and careful.

Chen Shu looked up at him and, seeing his focused expression, didn’t say anything.

The next moment, Yan Jingchuan’s gaze inadvertently met his and didn’t look away.

The sound of the hairdryer continued.

The hand combing through his hair gradually stilled.

Chen Shu smiled and asked, What?

Yan Jingchuan cupped the back of Chen Shu’s head and leaned down to kiss his lips, which held a faint smile.

The hairdryer was pressed under his palm, the noisy warm air humming mutedly.

When the kiss ended, Chen Shu raised his hand to Yan Jingchuan’s neck, his thumb brushing over his Adam’s apple and resting under his jaw. His gaze swept over Yan Jingchuan’s lips, which had finally regained some color, before meeting his eyes. He raised an eyebrow and said, It’s not dry yet.

Yan Jingchuan’s voice was slightly hoarse. It doesn’t matter. It’ll get wet again.

As he spoke, he used two fingers to gently untie the sash at Chen Shu’s waist.

A second kiss fell.

Amid the sound of the hairdryer.

The mattress swayed lightly.

The next morning, Chen Shu was awakened by the ringing of his phone.

Frowning, he opened his eyes and said to Yan Jingchuan first, Go back to sleep.

Then he answered the call.

He Qiyu’s voice came through the receiver.

Chen Shu, I’m heading over to your place now. Is that convenient?

Chen Shu said, No.

… He Qiyu paused, then remembered that Chen Shu was living with Yan Jingchuan.

Two men alone, sharing a room.

More importantly, absence makes the heart grow fonder.

He Qiyu felt she understood and asked tactfully, Uh… well… then when would be convenient for you?

Chen Shu glanced at Yan Jingchuan. This afternoon.

He Qiyu: ……..

This…

Isn’t that a bit intense…
