Chapter 9

Mr. Yan, can you hear me? Upon learning that Yan Jingchuan had awakened, the hospital director who had been closely monitoring the ICU immediately rushed over.

Yan Jingchuan glanced at him and raised his hand to remove the oxygen mask.

Mr. Yan! The director hurried forward to stop him. You shouldn’t—

Yan Jingchuan cut him off. Bring Zhang Shi to see me.

The patient’s voice was hoarse from just waking up, yet carried the authority of someone long accustomed to command, leaving no room for doubt.

…Understood. Not daring to delay when dealing with the hospital’s largest shareholder, the director instructed the doctors to expedite their examination and immediately made a call.

Yan Jingchuan closed his eyes again as the doctors carefully gathered around his bedside.

Soon, the director turned back and said, Mr. Yan, Assistant Zhang would like to speak with you on the phone.

Hm. Yan Jingchuan slightly raised his right hand.

The director quickly stepped forward and placed the connected phone into his palm.

Yan Jingchuan pressed it to his ear. Speak.

Mr. Yan, should we inform the board of directors about your awakening? The voice through the receiver carried panting breaths, as if from running.

Yan Jingchuan said, Keep it confidential for now.

Understood! Zhang Shi immediately grasped the meaning. I’m downstairs and will be there within three minutes!

Yan Jingchuan casually handed the phone back to the director. Thank you.

You’re too kind. Seeing his expression, the director quietly began explaining his medical condition.

Yan Jingchuan didn’t speak again.

Unlike the last time when he had unexpectedly returned to his body after just one day of rest, he had waited ten days this time for caution’s sake—until the warmth in his mind became clear and distinct—before deciding to take the risk again.

The company’s upper management had made directional errors, and he needed to make adjustments before the situation worsened.

Fortunately, his judgment had been correct.

At this moment, there was no stinging pain in his memory, only a blanket of calm. Aside from the weakness caused by the car accident, his body showed no abnormalities.

But he knew very well that such peace wouldn’t last long. All matters needed to be resolved quickly.

Three minutes later.

Zhang Shi arrived in a hurry.

He had run all the way from the elevator and gasped breathlessly with joy upon seeing Yan Jingchuan in the hospital bed. Mr. Yan, you’re really awake!

Yan Jingchuan sat propped against the raised bedhead. Seeing Zhang Shi enter, he waved a slight dismissal.

At this signal, all medical staff in the room withdrew.

Report, Yan Jingchuan said directly. What’s been happening at the company recently?

—

Meanwhile.

Trainee dormitory.

Chen Shu, you’re awake? Chi Yu said. Perfect timing—there was a notice in the group chat earlier. We’re having a mock exam this afternoon.

Chen Shu pressed the inexplicably excited Wangcai against his chest and pinched the bridge of his nose. Mock exam?

Chi Yu explained, Yeah, since the live broadcast is the day after tomorrow, we’re having a simulated test today. They said it’s for the mentors to check our progress.

After speaking, he noticed a teammate arriving at the doorway, so he bid farewell to Chen Shu and left with his teammate.

Chen Shu got out of bed and first placed Wangcai on the floor.

Normally only interested in eating and sleeping, today Wangcai trotted around, weaving back and forth between his feet, following him all the way to the bathroom while tugging and shaking his pant leg with its teeth.

Chen Shu moved him away, but he immediately pounced back.

What’s with you today? Chen Shu asked, raising an eyebrow after finishing his washing up and seeing Wangcai happily chewing on a slipper. Hungry?

Wangcai paid no attention.

Chen Shu reached down and picked him up.

He finally stopped moving, only returning to normal when placed back on the floor. But he completely ignored the food bowl in front of him, instead wagging his tail while carrying the slipper in his mouth before running under the bed to lie down.

Captain, I heard from Chi Yu that you’re awake? Liao Yue knocked on the door, Shall we go to the practice room together? I brought you some food.

Chen Shu replied, You go ahead, I’ll join you later.

Liao Yue nodded, Alright.

After he left, Chen Shu filled Wangcai’s milk bottle before turning to leave with his backpack.

In the practice room, the other six members had already gathered.

The mock exam was scheduled for 2 PM, leaving little time remaining. They needed to quickly build coordination.

Especially Yun Jie and Zhai Xiangchen.

They had slept later than everyone else and arrived earlier than anyone, all for the hope of performing slightly better in the mock exam.

By afternoon, the speakers in all practice rooms suddenly sounded simultaneously, announcing the exam rules.

The exam would follow song order, with the Invincible Youth Team and Most Shining Team competing against each other. After each group’s performance, mentors would score them on a 10-point scale. While these scores wouldn’t count toward the official process, they would be made public.

Planetary Fission ranked fourth. Chen Shu was in the Invincible Youth Team, scheduled to perform first in the fourth group. Just before taking the stage, Yun Jie was so nervous his palms were sweating. He couldn’t help telling Chen Shu, Captain, there are still several moves I’m not very familiar with.

The dance had only been choreographed late last night – time was simply too tight.

Chen Shu said, It’s just a test, don’t worry about it.

Though he said this, Yun Jie still found it difficult to overcome his anxiety.

Remembering that the reason he hadn’t mastered the routine was because Chen Shu had given him better opportunities to showcase himself, he felt the pressure multiply.

Before he could calm himself, the announcement came from above.

Please welcome the first group of ‘Planetary Fission’ trainees to the stage.

Chen Shu stood up, Let’s go.

Yun Jie followed behind him, his heart filled with unease.

Don’t mess up!

Don’t let the captain down!

Yet when the music started and the beat reached familiar sections –

First mistake.

Yun Jie’s mind went blank with a buzz.

Then came the second, third mistakes –

Throughout the entire song, there was no exceptional performance. Every part he wasn’t familiar with, he messed up.

The mentors at the front frowned, making notes.

After the song ended, the five mentors discussed for a while before Qu Jiangxue picked up the microphone.

Let me announce everyone’s scores, she said. Yin Anyan, 9 points; Liao Yue, 9 points; Jiang Xing, 8 points; Xiong Xiaolei, 7 points; Zhai Xiangchen, 5 points; Yun Jie, 4 points.

Yun Jie’s face burned with shame as he buried his head deeply, wishing he could disappear into the ground.

Chen Shu, Qu Jiangxue paused at this point before continuing, 9 points.

Yin Anyan and the others looked surprised, instinctively turning toward the stage.

Chen Shu had the highest completion rate among them, with neither singing nor dancing showing any flaws. How could he not get a perfect score?

Was there no perfect score?

Noticing their expressions, Su Xian also picked up the microphone. Chen Shu, the point deducted from you isn’t because of your ability, but because as captain, you failed to take responsibility for the entire team. Without this sense of responsibility, what’s the point of you being captain?

As the A Class homeroom teacher, his appreciation and expectations for Chen Shu were greater than the other mentors’.

His disappointment was palpable after watching this performance. I’ll request today’s recording from the production team and send you a copy, Chen Shu. Go back and watch it carefully.

Yun Jie couldn’t help speaking up, Teacher Su, it’s not—

No need to explain. Class C homeroom teacher Chu Mingyao also said, We can listen to your explanations, but during the live broadcast, on the stage, will the audience have time to hear your explanations? Even if you have reasons, why should the audience watch a performance that doesn’t meet their expectations?

Qu Jiangxue reminded them: There are only two days left until the live broadcast. The audience’s support for you is closely related to your performance. Don’t waste this opportunity.

Chen Shu simply said: We will. Thank you.

Yun Jie bit his lower lip, his eyes red with guilt and self-blame.

After leaving the evaluation room, he said in a trembling voice: I’m sorry, Captain. It’s all my fault that you were misunderstood by Teacher Su.

Chen Shu glanced at him: No need to apologize.

But I—

Teacher Su doesn’t know you well enough. Chen Shu said. In two days, you can prove your ability to him through your actions.

Yun Jie was startled.

He took a deep breath and nodded firmly: I will!

Zhai Xiangchen had been silent for a long time. Hearing this, he wordlessly walked toward Practice Room 7.

At 4 PM, a notification sounded through the dormitory speakers – the simulated exam rankings could be viewed on the large screen in the dormitory lobby.

The lobby immediately became lively.

First place must be Chen Shu again, right?

Maybe not first, but definitely top three.

Gu Wei, irritated by what he heard, directly picked up the remote and selected the ranking option.

First place: Invincible Youth Team WORLD, Captain Chi Yu, average score 8.6.

Second place: Invincible Youth Team Slight Smile, Captain Ding Chenzhou, average score 8.5.

Third place: Shine For You Team Planetary Fission, Captain Gu Wei, average score 8.4.

Scrolling down to the last line of the second page, they finally found Chen Shu’s name.

Tenth place: Invincible Youth Team Planetary Fission, Captain Chen Shu, average score 7.3.

The lobby was filled with surprise.

Gu Wei couldn’t help but laugh out loud.

Chen Shu’s team wasn’t just not first – they were a full 1.1 points lower than his third place.

He had known all along that this guy’s luck would run out by the initial C position.

With only two days left until the live broadcast, he wanted to see how Chen Shu would make up for that 1-point gap!

—

That night, when Chen Shu and his six teammates emerged from the practice room, they were met with constant stares from other trainees along the way.

Do we have something on us? Jiang Xing looked around left and right.

The others were equally puzzled.

It wasn’t until they returned to the dormitory and saw the rankings on the large screen that they finally understood.

Yun Jie immediately spotted that painfully glaring 7.3 points and instinctively looked at Chen Shu: Captain…

Chen Shu paid no attention to it: Everyone go back and rest. We’ll gather at 7 AM tomorrow.

Yun Jie wanted to say more, but Zhai Xiangchen pressed his shoulder and shook his head.

Chen Shu didn’t notice their interaction, having already turned toward his room.

When he returned, Chi Yu had just arrived too, but was standing at the doorway without going in.

Seeing Chen Shu, Chi Yu turned to look at him, his face showing a ghost-like stupor.

What? Chen Shu had just spoken when a small black shadow shot out from inside the room like a cannonball, circled around his feet, then raised its front paws to paw at his calves.

Chen Shu bent down to pick it up, only then noticing it was covered in mess, its paws and body full of dried milk stains.

Chi Yu stood dumbfounded for a long time before finally regaining his ability to speak: Chen Shu, come take a look at this.

Chen Shu brushed away the irregular strip of tissue paper on Wangcai’s head and walked over upon hearing the words. Looking at what?

Chi Yu no longer needed to explain.

The scene inside the doorway said it all.

The bathroom trash can lay sideways at the entrance, with rolls of tissue paper scattered everywhere from top to bottom and left to right, shattered across the floor. It mixed with the spilled goat’s milk from the dog bowl into a paste-like mess.

One door of the wardrobe stood open, revealing half of a torn short-sleeved shirt with bite marks all along the ripped edges. Further inside, only one corner of Chen Shu’s quilt remained on the bed, covered in leftover Milk Cake and slippers. The outermost seam had split open randomly, with some cotton filling on the floor and some still floating in the air.

Chi Yu murmured, Has Wangcai gone mad…?

Before Chen Shu could respond, he felt a slight itch in his thumb. Looking down, he saw Wangcai licking his fingertip with it held in its mouth.

Wangcai was acting very unlike itself today.

Just as Chen Shu was about to withdraw his hand, the sticky sensation at his fingertip suddenly stopped.

—

After the meeting ended and a headache began to loom, Yan Jingchuan lay down on the bed, allowing the dizziness to wash over him.

But upon opening his eyes and seeing the hand before him, he belatedly noticed the unusual sensation in his mouth.

It seemed that after his consciousness departed, this dog wouldn’t fall into a coma.

Yan Jingchuan calmly spat out the finger in his mouth, then heard a familiar voice above him.

Are you trying to rebel today?

No sooner had the words been spoken.

The familiar slap landed again.

… Yan Jingchuan stiffened all over, his dog face darkening.

He closed his eyes deeply.

Pretending nothing had happened at all.
