Chapter86

After speaking, Han Shan retreated closer to Chen Shu and immediately added, Of course I don’t mean any offense. I know Director Yan is very busy with official matters.

Zhang Shi glanced at him.

Guest appearance?

Director Yan?

Asking Director Yan to act in a film – he really didn’t know what this director was thinking.

What role?

Zhang Shi: …

He looked at Yan Jingchuan, trying to confirm whether the familiar voice he just heard actually came from his boss.

This one! Han Shan quickly pulled out the script with pleasant surprise and handed it over with both hands.

Chen Shu watched as Yan Jingchuan accepted it and asked, Director Han wants Jingchuan to act in this?

Han Shan nodded repeatedly: Exactly! Having Director Yan make a guest appearance as this character – don’t you think it’s almost like playing himself?

Yan Jingchuan looked at Chen Shu: You know which character it is?

Chen Shu said: Yes.

Han Shan had already taken out another script, flipped to the character’s introduction page, and began explaining in detail in a low voice.

Nameless was a film about an undercover drug enforcement officer infiltrating a drug trafficking ring. The main plot followed the protagonist Wei Liang, who took on a dangerous mission after his colleague was exposed. He risked his life to gradually gain the trust of the drug cartel leader, leading to a series of life-and-death struggles against time.

The role of the drug cartel leader Jiang Zhendong hadn’t been finalized yet. Although the character appeared only briefly, it required an actor with a strong presence to command respect among the current cast. Such candidates weren’t easy to find.

Jiang Zhendong’s character was portrayed as sickly weak, ruthless and vicious, with emotions that never showed on his face.

Yan Jingchuan’s natural authoritative presence was practically innate, and his current unrecovered injury happened to fit the requirement perfectly. The only aspect that didn’t quite match was the ruthless viciousness, but this face – handsome enough to easily break into the entertainment industry – could easily make up for any shortcomings.

After briefly explaining the scene, Han Shan asked anxiously: Director Yan, what do you think?

Yan Jingchuan passed the decision to Chen Shu: Your opinion?

Chen Shu said: If you’re interested in acting, you could give it a try.

Although Yan Jingchuan had never acted before, a guest appearance with just a few scenes wouldn’t be too difficult.

Plus, most of Jiang Zhendong’s scenes were with the protagonist Wei Liang. Even if problems arose during filming, he could help cover for him.

Hearing this, Zhang Shi felt utterly desolate inside.

And sure enough, just as his sense of foreboding began to rise, he heard Yan Jingchuan say.

Then let’s give it a try.

Han Shan said excitedly: That’s wonderful!

Whether it was Yan Jingchuan making a guest appearance or establishing a connection with Yan Jingchuan, both possibilities made him thrilled.

Zhang Shi couldn’t help asking: How many days will Director Yan’s scenes take to film?

Han Shan quickly said: Don’t worry, Director Yan’s scenes will definitely be scheduled intensively. If everything goes smoothly, we can finish in two days.

Zhang Shi gritted his teeth.

Smoothly?

And if it doesn’t go smoothly?

He didn’t dare ask this question in front of Yan Jingchuan, so he could only endure silently.

Bringing up the filming schedule, Han Shan continued explaining to Yan Jingchuan.

Even though the guest appearance was confirmed, the relevant sets still needed time to prepare, so the recent schedule would still focus mainly on Chen Shu’s scenes. Worried that Yan Jingchuan might be displeased, he repeatedly apologized.

Yan Jingchuan didn’t mind.

He was already staying with Chen Shu at the crew’s hotel anyway. As long as it was within the filming period, the specific dates didn’t matter.

Zhang Shi finally breathed a sigh of relief.

The battle with Xinrun was at its most intense phase, and the busiest period was right now. If the filming wasn’t scheduled for the near future, that was actually better.

Afterward, Yan Jingchuan didn’t stay on set for too long before Chen Shu saw him off to his car back to the hotel.

The film set was noisy and chaotic. Yan Jingchuan staying here was neither beneficial for his recovery nor for his work.

Chen Shu didn’t return until late at night.

It was the first day of filming, and everyone needed time to adjust and coordinate.

However, compared to Moon in the Mirror, he was more accustomed to the pace of Nameless. Whether it was the crew or the script, films always felt more familiar to him than idol dramas.

Entering the bedroom, he found Yan Jingchuan still sitting by the desk.

Why aren’t you asleep yet? Chen Shu asked.

In their phone call at 8 PM, he had already informed Yan Jingchuan that he would be working overtime. I told you to rest early and not wait for me.

Yan Jingchuan closed the document and turned to look at him. I wanted to wait for you.

Chen Shu’s steps faltered slightly.

Seeing Yan Jingchuan’s calm expression and hearing his matter-of-fact tone, an unconscious smile touched Chen Shu’s lips, and his eyes softened imperceptibly.

His solitary life was in the past.

Since he had agreed to be with Yan Jingchuan, what he needed to get used to was the future.

Moreover, the scene of seeing Yan Jingchuan as soon as he pushed open the door no longer required adjustment—this was his life now.

I’ll come back earlier from now on.

As he finished speaking, Chen Shu had already reached Yan Jingchuan’s side. As usual, he leaned down and kissed his forehead before patting the head of Wangcai, who had rushed over, then turned to wash up in the bathroom.

The warm sensation of the brief kiss on his forehead hadn’t yet faded.

Yan Jingchuan watched his retreating figure, a faint smile tugging at the corners of his lips.

Halfway through the filming of Nameless, the sets for Yan Jingchuan’s scenes were finally completed.

Han Shan had called Zhang Shi a month earlier and had hinted to Chen Shu repeatedly, both openly and subtly, worried that Yan Jingchuan might back out at the last minute.

On the day of the shoot, when Han Shan saw Chen Shu and Yan Jingchuan arrive together on set, the weight lifted from his chest, and he calmly arranged for the final costume fitting.

The character Jiang Zhendong, played by Yan Jingchuan, held an exceptional status, so the costume designers had prepared several options.

Not daring to make Yan Jingchuan try them all, Han Shan decided on a Tang suit and a Zhongshan suit, which could somewhat conceal Yan Jingchuan’s youthful appearance while complementing his tall and upright stature.

Since Yan Jingchuan used a cane, Han Shan added a string of Buddhist prayer beads to it. The black, glossy, round beads were smooth and full, with a long green tassel dangling from them, held in Yan Jingchuan’s free right hand.

When he emerged from the makeup room, a few streaks of white had been added to his jet-black short hair.

With just that one appearance, Han Shan’s eyes lit up.

The demeanor, the presence—it was a perfect portrayal of the character, and that alone was enough to delight him.

Chen Shu also stepped out of the fitting room.

He had more action scenes that day and was dressed simply in a white shirt, black trousers, and sneakers.

Seeing Yan Jingchuan, he couldn’t help but smile.

Yan Jingchuan pressed his lips together. What are you smiling at?

Chen Shu said, I’m smiling because you have such a good figure—everything looks good on you.

A smile had just begun to form on Yan Jingchuan’s lips.

Han Shan chimed in immediately, Yes, Director Yan really is a natural-born clothes hanger!

Yan Jingchuan glanced at him.

Han Shan felt an inexplicable chill at the back of his head.

Was even flattering the wrong move?

Where are we filming? Yan Jingchuan asked.

Snapping back to attention, Han Shan hurriedly led the way.

Chen Shu and Yan Jingchuan followed a step behind, walking side by side.

When they reached the filming location, just as Han Shan was about to explain the scene to Yan Jingchuan, he saw Chen Shu already demonstrating the blocking with the script in hand.

He breathed a sigh of relief and moved to the sidelines.

Thank goodness Chen Shu was here—otherwise, he wouldn’t have known how to interact with such an important figure.

A voice beside him asked, Director Han, who is that?

Han Shan turned to look. Yu Ran.

Then he lowered his voice to explain, Weren’t you here last time? That’s Director Yan Jingchuan from Yan Corporation. He agreed to make a guest appearance as Jiang Zhendong. Be careful and don’t cause any trouble for yourself.

Yan Corporation?

Yu Ran looked surprised. After listening, he acknowledged and turned his gaze to the set.

Chen Shu was reaching out to take Yan Jingchuan’s arm, leading him to the marked position while continuously explaining the scene.

Are Teacher Chen and this Director Yan very close? I’ve never seen him act so familiar with anyone before.

Han Shan nodded: Yes, they’re very close. I only met Director Yan because he came to visit Chen Shu on set. He definitely agreed to this guest appearance for Chen Shu’s sake.

Yu Ran asked: Should I still go on?

He was also in this scene. With all departments preparing, he should normally go through the rehearsal.

Han Shan hesitated for a moment: Ask Chen Shu.

During Director Yan’s two days on set, he had decided to treat Chen Shu as his anchor point.

Yu Ran then approached the two men, asking as he walked: Teacher Chen, do you need me to join you?

He had debuted earlier than Chen Shu and was older than him. Having acted for several years, he had initially been quite frustrated upon joining the crew, hearing that he would be playing a supporting role to a singer who debuted through a talent show.

But that frustration completely disappeared on his first day on set.

He couldn’t find any flaws in Chen Shu’s acting skills, and he genuinely respected him enough to call him Teacher.

Chen Shu said: Sure.

Today’s scenes all featured Yan Jingchuan with minimal lines, making it easier for him to get into character. There weren’t any particularly difficult points, with the focus remaining on the main storyline.

The first scene depicted Wei Liang having just successfully infiltrated the organization according to plan, but not yet having fully gained Jiang Zhendong’s trust. He was ordered to personally torture an undercover colleague.

The actor playing opposite, already in makeup, walked to his position and knelt on the concrete floor, waiting for filming to begin.

Chen Shu stood behind Yan Jingchuan.

When the clapperboard sounded, Yan Jingchuan slowly made his entrance from outside the massive iron gate that creaked open.

The heavy iron door slowly opened a crack, just revealing a silhouette before the camera shifted behind Yan Jingchuan.

The drug trafficking gang, led by Yan Jingchuan, stood waiting at the entrance in a triangular formation.

No one stood too close to Yan Jingchuan except for Chen Shu.

The camera gradually zoomed in, filling the frame with Yan Jingchuan’s back as the warehouse door slowly swung open.

The camera shifted again.

On the ground, a cane landed, splashing in a puddle of muddy water. Then moving upward – from the shoe soles, to the long legs, stopping abruptly at the chin – followed immediately by a close-up front shot that finally revealed Jiang Zhendong’s true face.

Han Shan shifted in his chair, watching Yan Jingchuan stride forward slowly.

For a first-time actor, with such a long walking shot, he had expected Yan Jingchuan to show some awkwardness or discomfort, but there was none.

The footsteps of Yan Corporation’s helmsman were captured by the camera, his imposing presence conveyed perfectly even through the screen.

One take.

Han Shan exchanged a look with the producer beside him, speechless.

Chen Shu’s shots were even more flawless.

Scenes they had expected would require adjustment were completed in half the conservatively estimated time.

Fortunately, the subsequent sets had been prepared early. Seeing the smooth filming progress, Han Shan hurriedly prepared for the next scene.

The next scene’s plot was simpler.

To infiltrate the enemy organization, the protagonist Wei Liang needed to seize every opportunity at all costs. So when he saw that the incoming bullet would only wound Jiang Zhendong without being fatal, he immediately tackled Jiang Zhendong to take the risk and save him.

After all departments were ready, the clapperboard sounded.

The soft padding was already laid out.

Explosions and flames had been chasing them all the way.

Yan Jingchuan strode quickly toward the dock under the protection of his subordinates.

Soon, reaching the marked spot, the cue for gunfire sounded right on time.

Chen Shu glanced back and immediately lunged toward Yan Jingchuan.

Yan Jingchuan instinctively raised his arms to embrace him from behind.

Once out of the camera frame, Chen Shu flipped over mid-air, landing on the soft padding while holding the other man.

Are you alright? Yan Jingchuan asked with a frown.

Chen Shu smiled. I’m fine.

Then came the next shot.

The padding was removed. Chen Shu held Yan Jingchuan, maintaining the tackling posture, ready for filming.

The actors without scenes stood behind Han Shan, watching the monitor and observing the two men’s position.

Han Shan kept shouting: Yes! Just like that! Closer! Good, Chen Shu, a bit closer!

… Yu Ran glanced at him.

Director, what exactly are you filming…
