Chapter 85

Zhang Shi stood outside the door.

He waited and waited.

He left and returned.

Director Yan always kept a regular schedule, and Chen Shu was the same. Even if Director Yan’s old illness had flared up again, it was unlikely both of them would sleep in.

Most importantly, he distinctly heard movement inside.

The bedroom’s soundproofing wasn’t as good as the study-turned-music-room, especially since he was standing right by the door.

Still, he could only catch faint, muffled sounds through the cracks—he couldn’t even tell if they were voices, let alone make out what was being said.

Were they talking?

Why hadn’t they come out after waking up?

This was unprecedented.

Just as Zhang Shi hesitated over whether to knock again, a sudden realization struck him.

Wait…

Could it be…?

His eyelids twitched violently.

The thought that he might be eavesdropping on Director Yan made him quickly turn and head to the living room.

After what felt like an eternity, he returned to the door, raising and lowering his right hand repeatedly. Still, he didn’t dare knock.

Forget it.

He wasn’t a masochist—why invite a scolding first thing in the morning?

But before turning away again, he faintly heard the sound of a door slamming shut.

Zhang Shi glanced around.

All the doors were intact.

It must have been the bedroom door.

Even from this distance, the sound was loud and sharp—what were those two up to now?

He checked his watch.

No way?

Still not done??

He had no choice but to retreat to the living room again, waiting anxiously with trembling legs.

A long time passed. The more frequently he checked his watch, the more restless he became, until he finally heard the bedroom door open with a soft click.

“Director Yan!” Zhang Shi rushed over. “You—”

His words caught in his throat when he saw who had opened the door. “Mr. Chen?”

Chen Shu nodded. “Morning.”

Zhang Shi stared blankly as Chen Shu walked toward the dining table. His damp hair, casually swept back, was still not fully dry, with a few strands falling over his temples as he moved. He carried the lingering moisture of a recent shower.

His movements were unhurried, and his usual aloof demeanor seemed softened, replaced by an indescribable aura.

Like clouds descending to earth, tangible and within reach.

“What are you looking at?”

Zhang Shi stiffened and turned to see Yan Jingchuan emerge from the room as well.

Same damp hair, same lingering moisture…

But his deep-set eyes remained as piercing and stern as ever.

Zhang Shi quickly lowered his head and coughed. “Director Yan, Li Sheng wants to negotiate. He sent Shen Zhong from the Pin’ai Foundation to convey the message—his attitude is very humble.”

That Li Sheng would surrender so quickly and so early, even at the cost of his pride, was likely within Director Yan’s expectations, but it was still astonishing.

After all, his arrogant and domineering reputation was deeply ingrained. It was just a pity that his resources and capabilities were no match for Director Yan’s, leaving him defeated in this confrontation.

Although even Director Yan couldn’t fully annex a conglomerate in such a short time, Xinrun’s internal and external troubles were no less severe than Yan Corporation’s had been six months ago. With Li Sheng now tied up, various forces would inevitably swarm in, eager to tear off a piece of the pie. These smaller moves alone would be enough to keep Li Sheng overwhelmed.

Lost in these thoughts, Zhang Shi realized he hadn’t received a response.

He looked up to see Director Yan already standing beside Chen Shu.

Chen Shu handed him a glass of water. “Why didn’t you rest a bit longer?”

Yan Jingchuan only asked, “What time are you leaving?”

Chen Shu said, “Soon.”

Yan Jingchuan frowned. “Soon? What time is that?”

Chen Shu smiled. “I didn’t ask. He Qiyu will call before she arrives.”

Yan Jingchuan didn’t press further.

“Sit,” Chen Shu said, pulling out a chair.

Yan Jingchuan glanced at him. I’m not tired.

Chen Shu’s smile deepened. I know, but meals should be eaten sitting down.

… Yan Jingchuan’s expression remained unchanged as he tested the temperature of the meal tray. The food’s cold. I’ll heat it up.

Chen Shu said, Let me help you.

Zhang Shi stood to the side, watching the two figures disappear into the kitchen, his expression stiff.

Hello??

There’s still a living person here!

There’s important company business to handle!

Director Yan, even when dating you need to follow basic principles, Director Yan!!

But Director Yan didn’t hear his inner cries. After having a simple, belated breakfast with Chen Shu and changing clothes together, they finally came to the living room.

Zhang Shi breathed a sigh of relief.

Chen Shu had to record a program today and wouldn’t be back until tomorrow afternoon at the earliest.

He finally had a day and a half to relax.

But before he could fully relax, he saw Chen Shu make a call to He Qiyu.

Yan Jingchuan also said, Let’s go.

Zhang Shi looked bewildered.

Go?

Go where?

Then he heard Chen Shu say to He Qiyu over the phone.

Jingchuan and I will come together.

Zhang Shi: …………

Yan Jingchuan had already fastened the dog leash on Wangcai and was leading him toward the door.

Wangcai knew they were going out when he saw the leash, excitedly charging toward the door with his tongue hanging out.

Chen Shu hung up the phone and watched the man and dog.
With the loss of Li Sheng as his solid backing, the statements and various attempts released online by Jian Haochen’s public relations team became nothing more than desperate struggles before the case was finalized.

Because not only Chen Shu and Yan Jingchuan, but Jian Haochen’s tampering on the set of Action Ready! had caused huge losses to the production team, offending all the forces behind the show in one fell swoop. This provoked public outrage and couldn’t be easily dismissed.

On the same night his agent recanted testimony, Milan Entertainment also announced the formal termination of their contract with Jian Haochen, pledging full cooperation with the police investigation.

Being abandoned by Milan served as a clear indicator, marking that from this moment on, Jian Haochen could no longer recover.

Arriving at the filming location.

Before getting out of the car, Chen Shu asked Yan Jingchuan, Did you do this?

The question seemed abrupt.

Zhang Shi thought for two seconds before realizing it probably referred to that minor celebrity.

Yan Jingchuan had already replied, Yes.

Chen Shu said, Thank you.

Zhang Shi watched through the rearview mirror, hearing these two words delivered with such plain indifference.

That’s it?

Then he saw Director Yan look at Chen Shu.

Just one glance.

Chen Shu raised his hand to press against the back of Yan Jingchuan’s neck, leaned in, and kissed his thin lips.

…Zhang Shi closed his eyes in grief and anger.

—

The public outcry condemning Jian Haochen grew increasingly powerful.

Action on Time! which aired at 6 PM, happened to catch the peak of discussion, drawing countless viewers and clearly emerging as the biggest winner.

Unfortunately, Chen Shu had only signed on for two episodes.

After the program ended, He Qiyu received numerous offers. Following Chen Shu’s prior instructions, regardless of the quotation or production team quality, she didn’t accept any, reserving all time for Chen Shu to prepare for The Nameless.

During the half-month without any schedules, Chen Shu stayed at Hengtai Residential Area, and Yan Jingchuan rarely went to the company.

The only one suffering was Zhang Shi.

After enduring half a month, upon hearing Chen Shu was about to join the film crew, he first felt joy, then wanted to cry.

When Chen Shu went to film variety shows, Director Yan would follow. For movie shoots lasting two to three months, could Director Yan wait?

Director Yan couldn’t wait.

On the day of joining the crew, he came with Chen Shu to the hotel where the crew was staying.

Zhang Shi went as usual to handle the check-in procedures.

On the way to the elevator, Chen Shu and Han Shan met face to face.

Chen Shu, you’re here! Perfect, Yu Ran has arrived too. Do you have time tonight to have dinner together and let you two get familiar? Han Shan walked over smiling, but upon seeing Yan Jingchuan beside Chen Shu, he was startled and quickly lowered his voice, Director Yan.

Yan Jingchuan’s expression remained indifferent. Hmm.

Han Shan instinctively looked at Chen Shu.

Chen Shu said, Sure.

Han Shan paused for a second before realizing this was responding to his earlier invitation. Then… 5:30— Noticing Yan Jingchuan’s slight frown from the corner of his eye, he changed it to, 6:00—uh, 7:00 to meet?

Chen Shu glanced at Yan Jingchuan.

Yan Jingchuan was holding Wangcai’s leash, not looking at him.

Chen Shu said, Okay.

Right here at the hotel, I’ll send you the address later. After saying this, Han Shan stepped aside to bid farewell.

Watching the two walking shoulder to shoulder, his mind raced.

Given the location of the film studio, that person wouldn’t come here for business trips—he must be accompanying Chen Shu.

He never imagined Chen Shu and Yan Jingchuan’s relationship was this close.

—

After going upstairs, Chen Shu first showered and changed clothes.

Since the meeting with Han Shan was set for 7 PM, he simply had dinner with Yan Jingchuan before heading out.

Arriving at the private room Han Shan had reserved, everyone else was already there.

Not just Yu Ran as Han Shan mentioned, but all the main creators were present.

Seeing Chen Shu enter, the actors came forward first.

Noticing his gaze, Yan Jingchuan paused slightly. What are you looking at?

Chen Shu countered, Do you really want to know?

Yan Jingchuan said sternly, Forget it if you don’t want to say.

Chen Shu smiled. Mindful of Zhang Shi’s presence, he stepped closer and spoke by Yan Jingchuan’s ear, implying meaning: When you were Wangcai, you were much more obedient than now.

Yan Jingchuan abruptly turned to face him.

Chen Shu raised an eyebrow. You asked me to say it.

Yan Jingchuan pressed his lips together and continued forward with Wangcai.

After a few steps, he looked back at him. Aren’t we leaving yet?

Let’s go. Chen Shu carried his handbag with one hand, stepped over the threshold, reached out to hold his hand, and walked toward the elevator.

The second episode of Ready, Action! was recorded very smoothly and successfully.

Chen Shu’s injury-induced coma during the first episode’s recording had already caused quite a stir online. When it was later revealed to be intentional rather than accidental, netizens became even more outraged.

Fortunately, the program team’s PR responded promptly, immediately admitting fault. After Chen Shu woke up, compensation matters were quickly settled, directing all the netizens’ anger toward the real culprit, Jian Haochen.

Later, Jian Haochen’s agent took all the blame, claiming the reason was resentment over netizens praising Chen Shu while criticizing Jian Haochen after he joined Escape Room, which made him act impulsively.

Although there were rational voices, overwhelming Internet water army quickly redirected the fire toward the agent, and it initially seemed Jian Haochen might escape consequences.

But on the afternoon of the program’s broadcast day, the agent recanted his testimony in court.

He stated that the entire scheme was Jian Haochen’s idea from start to finish, and he was merely an accomplice. The reason he tried to take the blame was because he was tempted by Jian Haochen’s promise of substantial gratitude money afterward. However, facing the police, he had an epiphany and decided not to collude with Jian Haochen anymore, wanting to give Chen Shu justice.

Once the announcement came out, netizens exploded with discussion again.

When Chen Shu heard He Qiyu mention this matter, he knew there was no real epiphany—it was likely Yan Jingchuan’s doing again.

With Nameless about to begin filming, it was indeed necessary for everyone to get familiar with each other quickly to better immerse themselves in their roles.

Halfway through the dinner gathering, Han Shan, seeing the atmosphere was just right, cleared the dishes and organized an impromptu table read.

After that, Chen Shu attended all the training sessions until filming began.

On the day of the shoot, Yan Jingchuan drove Chen Shu to the set.

He didn’t make an appearance in front of the media.

Only after all the media had dispersed and formal filming commenced did he step out of the car and enter the set.

When Han Shan received the news, he felt flattered and rushed over to greet Yan Jingchuan, leading him to Chen Shu’s dressing room.

He didn’t disturb the two, closing the door and stepping out after escorting Yan Jingchuan inside.

Waiting outside until Chen Shu pushed the door open, Han Shan finally mustered his courage, clutching the script in his hand, and approached them.

After exchanging a few tense pleasantries, he moved to Chen Shu’s side and nervously voiced the idea that had spontaneously arisen during their very first meeting.

Director Yan, may I ask you something presumptuous? Han Shan glanced at Chen Shu first.

Considering Chen Shu’s connection, Yan Jingchuan probably wouldn’t get angry.

Would you… be interested in making a cameo appearance in ‘Nameless’?
