Chapter 83

Hearing Yan Jingchuan’s words, Chen Shu paused for half a second while closing the door.

Click.

Chen Shu withdrew his hand and looked at him.

Wangcai rushed over from the bedside, weaving between the two of them to assert his presence.

Woof!

But Yan Jingchuan didn’t look at him.

Since you’ve guessed my relationship with Wangcai, I won’t lie to you, he laid out the secret completely. That’s right, after the car accident, I turned into this dog. You saved my life.

Chen Shu looked at him.

Yan Jingchuan had remained silent during their morning conversation, and Chen Shu had originally thought he didn’t want to discuss it. After all, the experience of turning into a dog wasn’t something Yan Jingchuan could easily talk about.

He also had no interest in prying.

Everyone had secrets, and he was no exception.

Had Yan Jingchuan come here today due to some misunderstanding?

You don’t need to tell me these things, Chen Shu said. Since Wangcai is you, I’ll give him to you, consider it—

No! Yan Jingchuan interrupted him. Let me finish.

Chen Shu chuckled lightly. Alright.

Seeing the curve of his lips, Yan Jingchuan’s heart tightened even more.

Chen Shu simply didn’t take this matter to heart.

I admit it too—I had Zhang Shi make the deal with you, and the contract I proposed, it was all because of Wangcai. Yan Jingchuan stepped forward, gazing into Chen Shu’s eyes. At that time, I really only wanted to take Wangcai away. I only felt gratitude toward you.

He couldn’t pinpoint when it started, but Chen Shu had long surpassed Wangcai to take root in his heart.

He couldn’t find the source. The only thing he could do was hold tight to the person before him, to avoid letting go until the very end.

Yan Jingchuan raised his hand and grasped Chen Shu’s wrist. But now what I want is you. I want you to stay by my side. Don’t leave.

Chen Shu glanced down at his hand, then looked back at him. Alright.

Yan Jingchuan was slightly stunned.

The joy blooming in his heart hadn’t yet reached his eyes when—

Chen Shu said, After filming these episodes, I won’t take on any more variety shows.

Variety shows?

Yan Jingchuan frowned. What are you talking about?

Hmm? Chen Shu said. That’s still not enough? The movie has already been signed, and I’ve used all my money for investments. I can’t afford the breach of contract penalty.

Yan Jingchuan’s frown deepened. What does this have to do with the movie?

It doesn’t? Chen Shu countered. You came all the way here to tell me to stay by your side—isn’t it because of today’s sudden schedule change?

Yan Jingchuan’s face darkened faintly. No!

Chen Shu was surprised. No?

Yan Jingchuan took a deep breath. What exactly did you hear just now?

Chen Shu smiled. Don’t worry, I understand what you mean.

Yan Jingchuan’s expression eased slightly, hearing his heartbeat beginning to race again. You understand?

Chen Shu said, There are still over six months left on the contract. I’ll do my best to cooperate with you in resolving your family issues.

Yan Jingchuan’s face instantly darkened completely.

Chen Shu looked at him with a smile. Giving Wangcai to you doesn’t mean I’m going to take the opportunity to break the contract. You don’t need to worry.

Yan Jingchuan cared deeply about the Yan family. Having been forced several times to put on an act for Yan Jinqing’s surveillance, they were at a critical juncture now. Giving up halfway would mean all previous efforts were wasted. He wouldn’t go back on his word.

As for giving away Wangcai—

Yan Jingchuan’s connection with Wangcai was closer than his. Only with Wangcai by his side could Yan Jingchuan’s condition be effectively controlled. Yan Jingchuan needed him more than he did.

Besides, his work nature meant he wouldn’t have a stable lifestyle. Wangcai would spend more time with Yan Jingchuan than with him, and Yan Jingchuan would ensure his quality of life. Given that, why not?

Woof!

After circling around and around, seeing that neither of them paid it any attention, Wangcai pushed off with its hind legs and pounced onto Chen Shu.

Chen Shu looked down at it. Over the next six months, it’s a good chance for it to get used to me not being here—

The soft sensation against his lips interrupted him once more.

Before Chen Shu could lift his gaze—

Thud—

The cane hit the floor, bounced a few times, and rolled into the corner.

Yan Jingchuan held Chen Shu by the waist, kissing him more deeply.

The warm, moist sensation slipped between his lips—a fierce passion that starkly contrasted with Yan Jingchuan’s usual demeanor.

Chen Shu snapped back to attention.

Seeing Yan Jingchuan’s tightly shut eyes and the faint furrow between his brows, Chen Shu raised his hand to grip Yan Jingchuan’s jaw and took half a step back. Jingchuan—

But Yan Jingchuan cut him off again.

This is what I mean, Yan Jingchuan said, staring intently at him from barely a breath away. Not a contract, and no time limit.

This was completely unexpected for Chen Shu.

Frowning, he met Yan Jingchuan’s gaze. Are you serious?

Whether I’m serious or not—you should know best. Yan Jingchuan’s voice was low. He took another step forward, pressing Chen Shu against the door, and leaned in to kiss his thin lips once more.

The last incident hadn’t been long ago.

This time, there were no drugs or cold water to interfere—only the pure warmth of Chen Shu against his lips, grinding and teasing until they tingled and itched, spreading recklessly through every gap.

Yan Jingchuan’s breathing grew slightly uneven. He tugged Chen Shu’s shirt free from his waistband, his thumb brushing over the lean curve of his back, while his grip on Chen Shu’s wrist tightened even more.

Chen Shu hadn’t consented to his closeness.

But the one thing Yan Jingchuan couldn’t bear to hear right now was rejection.

Chen Shu lifted his hand to rest on the back of Yan Jingchuan’s neck. Jingchuan—

Just as Yan Jingchuan was about to speak, the illness that had been building since morning chose that moment to flare up. Without his cane for support, he braced a hand against the door behind Chen Shu, frowning as he tried to steady himself.

Chen Shu had no choice but to pull him into an embrace.

Yan Jingchuan turned his head to look at Chen Shu’s profile.

Chen Shu glanced back at him. Hold onto me.

Yan Jingchuan complied, albeit stiffly, and Chen Shu bent down, scooping him up into a bridal carry, and walked toward the bed.

I told you before—once your filming wrapped up, I had something to say to you. The position made Yan Jingchuan tense all over, but he tried to ignore it. This is my answer.

Chen Shu paused.

Yan Jingchuan said, I want you to stay by my side because of you—not because of any contract.

Chen Shu looked at him.

Yan Jingchuan’s gaze never wavered. Chen Shu, what I want isn’t a kept relationship.

Chen Shu suddenly asked, Why?

There is no why, Yan Jingchuan replied. Why must there always be a reason? All you need to know is that, up to now, you are the only one who has ever been in my bed, the only one I’ve ever worried about, and the only one I care about this much.

Chen Shu set him down.

And you?

Chen Shu looked at him and answered truthfully, I don’t know.

He had never considered matters of the heart—not before, and not until now.

Yan Jingchuan’s answer had taken him by surprise, but surprisingly, he didn’t dislike it.

I’ve said before, I may not have much to give. But if this is what you want, I’ll agree, Chen Shu said. Until the day you change your mind.

Hearing this, Yan Jingchuan suppressed a smile. You don’t believe me?

Chen Shu said, I do.

In the original story, just like him, Yan Jingchuan had never had any romantic experience. Now that the plot had shifted, Yan Jingchuan might be acting on a moment’s passion.

But feelings born from a contractual relationship, or feelings that arise from an accident, are rarely long-lasting.

Yan Jingchuan looked at him expressionlessly. What about you?

Chen Shu said, Hmm?

Yan Jingchuan said, Did you agree to be with me just out of a sense of responsibility? What are your true feelings toward me? If that accident hadn’t happened, would your answer still be the same?

If that accident hadn’t happened?

Chen Shu glanced at him.

Yan Jingchuan frowned. Do you think I would sleep with just anyone?

Of course not, Chen Shu said. That’s not what I meant.

Yan Jingchuan pressed further, Then what did you mean?

Chen Shu changed his tone. Even if that accident hadn’t happened, I would still have agreed.

Yan Jingchuan straightened his back slightly. Why?

No particular reason, Chen Shu said, a faint smile in his eyes. Why must there always be a reason?

… Yan Jingchuan’s face darkened as he reached out and grabbed him.

Chen Shu held his hand in return, his smile fading as he said seriously, Because I once said that no matter what you ask of me, as long as I can fulfill it, I will agree.

Yan Jingchuan’s confession had come too suddenly.

He truly didn’t know how to respond.

Fulfilling his promise was the safest course of action.

He never broke his word.

Perhaps that was why saying these words felt easier and lighter than he had imagined.

As for being with Yan Jingchuan, he had long grown accustomed to it.

The grip of Yan Jingchuan’s fingers loosened slightly.

He wanted to ask more—he remembered that Chen Shu had once set a time limit on this promise. He wanted to ask if that limit still applied today.

But he absolutely did not want to hear Chen Shu’s confirmation.

Perhaps sensing the unspoken question in his heart, Chen Shu added, Don’t overthink it. I’ll stay by your side until you change your mind.

His emotions fluctuating repeatedly, Yan Jingchuan kept a stern face but couldn’t suppress the faint smile at the corner of his lips.

Chen Shu reached out to adjust his tie and, seeing this, smiled as well. Satisfied now?

Yan Jingchuan looked at him deeply. Barely satisfied.

Chen Shu raised an eyebrow and changed the subject. Let’s go. It’s time to head back.

Yan Jingchuan hadn’t fully recovered yet, so it was best to return home early to rest. Since the filming had ended, there was no need to stay at the hotel.

Yan Jingchuan said, Okay.

Chen Shu went downstairs with him.

The driver was waiting below.

While getting into the car, Chen Shu made a call to He Qiyu. She showed no surprise at the news that he and Yan Jingchuan were leaving together, clearly having known about Yan Jingchuan’s schedule earlier than he did—which was why she had insisted on returning to the hotel.

He didn’t dwell on it. After hanging up, he and Yan Jingchuan headed straight to the airport.

By the time they returned to Hengtai Community, the sky was pitch black.

Zhang Shi escorted Yan Jingchuan home but did not stay long.

After he left, Chen Shu and Yan Jingchuan returned to the bedroom.

The medical equipment in the bedroom had been moved.

Yan Jingchuan said, You’re moving back in tonight.

Chen Shu said, Okay.

His answers were always without hesitation.

Watching Chen Shu’s retreating figure as he headed to the bathroom, Yan Jingchuan’s gaze flickered.

Even though Chen Shu agreed to everything, those words still lingered in his mind—

Until you change your mind.

Chen Shu still didn’t trust him.

Or perhaps he didn’t care about Yan Jingchuan’s feelings, only feeling responsible for the accident.

But it didn’t matter.

If it was responsibility today, it would eventually turn into affection.

By the time Chen Shu came out of the bathroom, Yan Jingchuan was already sitting by the bed.

Hearing the footsteps, Yan Jingchuan looked up.

Chen Shu lifted the covers and got into bed.

The round trip in a single day had been too rushed. Since he was moving back in, he didn’t plan to review any scripts tonight, not wanting to disturb Yan Jingchuan’s rest.

Let’s sleep.

Yan Jingchuan watched Chen Shu’s movement as he turned off the light. Wait.

Chen Shu paused and met his gaze. What is it?

Yan Jingchuan said, Did you forget something?

Chen Shu thought for a moment but came up empty. Forgot what?

We’re lovers now. Yan Jingchuan maintained a stern expression as he reminded him in a deep voice, The goodnight kiss.

Understanding dawned on Chen Shu. He raised his hand to cup the back of Yan Jingchuan’s head and kissed his slightly pursed lips.

As they drew closer,

the flushed red behind Yan Jingchuan’s ears was clearly visible before him.

A smile flickered in Chen Shu’s eyes.

When the kiss ended, he pulled back slightly. Is that enough?

The breath brushing against his cheek was scorchingly enticing, making Yan Jingchuan’s heartbeat skip a beat.

He replied impassively, Keep up the good work.
