Chapter 80

Jingchuan! As Yan Jingchuan suddenly fell unconscious, Chen Shu pulled him back into his embrace and pressed the call button.

Medical staff arrived immediately, their faces lighting up with pleasant surprise upon seeing Chen Shu awake.

Zhang Shi also mingled among the crowd: Mr. Chen, you’re awake!

Chen Shu frowned: Don’t mind me for now. Jingchuan has passed out – check him first.

Only then did everyone realize they weren’t simply embracing, and hurriedly gathered around to help.

Chen Shu also stood up, lifting Yan Jingchuan horizontally from the floor and placing him on the bed.

But after prolonged bed rest, his body remained quite weak. After setting Yan Jingchuan down, just as he prepared to turn and move aside to sit elsewhere, he noticed the hand gripping his wrist hadn’t loosened.

Yan Jingchuan’s tightly knitted brows had relaxed upon seeing Chen Shu earlier, but now, as if sensing in his sleep that the person he could hold in his palm was about to leave again, he frowned once more and tightened his grip, though his consciousness remained unclear.

Zhang Shi quickly stepped forward: Mr. Chen, Director Yan might just be extremely exhausted. His eating and sleeping have been very poor this past week. Could you stay with him a while longer?

Chen Shu said: Check him first.

As he spoke, he pressed his hand against Yan Jingchuan’s, his fingertips probing into the tightly clenched palm.

Yan Jingchuan’s frown deepened further.

Chen Shu paused, then leaned down and whispered softly: Jingchuan, let go.

Yan Jingchuan’s eyelids fluttered slightly, the strength in his fingers gradually easing away with Chen Shu’s movements.

Chen Shu stepped back, continuing to make space for the medical staff.

Before long, the hospital director led another group surging into the room to examine Chen Shu.

As soon as the examination ended, Zhang Shi couldn’t resist asking: How is he?The doctor said: His recovery is perfectly normal, completely unable to see that he had been in a coma for so long…

It was practically a miracle.

Just like when Director Yan suddenly awoke from his vegetative state before.

Chen Shu looked toward Yan Jingchuan on the hospital bed: What about Director Yan?

Yan Jingchuan’s examination had ended earlier than his. Zhang Hui replied: The doctors believe Director Yan’s coma resulted from sudden release of psychological pressure combined with excessive fatigue – his body forcing him to rest and recover strength.

During this period, Zhang Shi had witnessed it most clearly.

While Chen Shu was in a coma, Director Yan had barely stepped outside the hospital room, neither sleeping nor resting, keeping constant watch over this sickbed, even handling work matters right beside it.

He didn’t know whether Director Yan had eaten or slept at all – at least in his recollection, Director Yan was always awake.

Fortunately, Chen Shu hadn’t remained unconscious any longer.

Otherwise, he truly didn’t know how much longer Director Yan could have endured.

By the way, Zhang Shi added, Since Mr. Chen has just woken up, I’ll arrange another hospital room.

Chen Shu said: Not necessary.

Judging by Zhang Shi’s account, since Yan Jingchuan had kept vigil over him for a week, keeping watch over Yan Jingchuan for one night was nothing for him.

Zhang Shi didn’t insist.

Just then, He Qiyu arrived. The moment she saw Chen Shu, she couldn’t contain her joy: Chen Shu, you’re awake!

Chen Shu glanced toward the hospital bed: Let’s talk outside.

He Qiyu followed his gaze, noticed Yan Jingchuan lying on the bed, quickly quieted down, and nodded.

Zhang Shi walked out with them beyond the glass door.

Watching Chen Shu close the room door, He Qiyu composed her expression and recounted everything that had happened during his coma period in full detail.

After the accident at the filming site, Yan Jingchuan’s driver Meng Changdong received Zhang Shi’s call and immediately rushed over to conduct a preliminary inspection.

The safety wire ropes showed signs of intentional wear and tear.

According to the staff interaction records provided by the production team, these props had been inspected and maintained by senior staff members. They were last checked just before filming that afternoon, with records showing no abnormalities. Therefore, Zhang Shi requested the production team to cooperate by immediately sealing off the scene, prohibiting anyone—including fans outside the venue—from leaving.

Fortunately, the police arrived promptly and quickly identified the suspect.

It was an employee hired just one week before filming started. He trembled with fear when he saw the police and confessed everything without even being interrogated. I can’t believe he had the nerve to do such a thing! He Qiyu was still furious as she recounted the incident. And you’ll never guess who was behind it—it was that bastard Jian Haochen!

Jian Haochen? Chen Shu had little impression of the name.

He’s the one who took your spot in the Escape Room show, He Qiyu explained. He already stole your variety show opportunity, yet he still targeted you. I can’t understand why. Unfortunately, the evidence the police obtained only points to his agent, who seems intent on taking full blame.

Zhang Shi added, But don’t worry, Mr. Chen. Even if he doesn’t end up in prison, Director Yan will make sure he suffers.

He Qiyu said, This incident has caused a huge uproar online with high public attention, so the outcome should be announced soon.

Chen Shu responded, Mm.

Zhang Shi continued, Also, regarding the previous incident, the person who tampered with your room has been caught. However, he’s being stubborn and only claims to be an obsessive fan who did it to get closer to you.

That incident? He Qiyu sounded confused.

Chen Shu said, Mm.

Seeing that he didn’t intend to elaborate, He Qiyu didn’t press further. But since Zhang Shi mentioned obsessive fan, it was clear it couldn’t have been anything good.

Frowning, she said, I’ll demand an explanation from the production team for this as well.

Chen Shu encountering an obsessive fan in his room and nearly facing grave danger due to the setup during filming—with so many incidents just in the first episode, the production team bore primary responsibility. This included ensuring Chen Shu’s safety.

She hadn’t considered these aspects before, but after this incident, she must hire several security personnel for Chen Shu.

As the three were talking, Xiao Tian came upstairs with food.

After washing up, Chen Shu ate with everyone and then returned to the hospital room.

Zhang Shi and the other two remained in the living area, leaving the hospital room quiet.

Chen Shu sat in the chair by the bed that originally belonged to Yan Jingchuan, gazing at Yan Jingchuan’s pale face on the bed.

Scenes from his dream suddenly flashed through his mind.

Everything felt so real.

Chen Shu lowered his gaze, the sensation of Fang Shijie’s grip on his elbow still lingering.

And the voice he had heard in his ear at that moment—

Chen Shu looked at Yan Jingchuan.

Unexpectedly, he met Yan Jingchuan’s slowly opening eyes.

Chen Shu stood up to press the call button and asked softly, How are you feeling?

Yan Jingchuan instinctively reached out and grasped his hand. Don’t go.

Chen Shu said, I won’t leave.

Yan Jingchuan still refused to let go.

The hospital director arrived with medical staff, ready to proceed with an examination, but Yan Jingchuan raised his hand slightly and waved them off. Everyone, leave.

The director looked troubled. Director Yan…

Yan Jingchuan glanced at him.

Not daring to argue, the director instinctively looked toward Zhang Shi.

Zhang Shi also hesitated, instinctively turning to Chen Shu.

Chen Shu said, Don’t be stubborn. You’re very weak right now.

I’m fine, Yan Jingchuan replied, his eyes fixed on Chen Shu. Let’s go home.

Chen Shu said, No.

Yan Jingchuan pressed his lips together.

Chen Shu’s tone softened slightly, At least wait until your condition improves.

Yan Jingchuan made a move to get up, I’m not at the point of needing hospitalization.

Chen Shu pressed a hand on his shoulder, Sit still.

Yan Jingchuan raised his hand to grasp Chen Shu’s, then said, Let’s go home. I can recuperate at home.

Chen Shu frowned slightly and looked toward the hospital director, Can Director Yan be discharged now?

Yan Jingchuan also turned to look over.

The director’s expression stiffened, not daring to refuse, Yes, Director Yan can be discharged at any time.

Seeing Chen Shu relent, Yan Jingchuan said to Zhang Shi, Prepare the car.

Right away. After responding, Zhang Shi turned and called the driver.

Chen Shu helped Yan Jingchuan out of bed.

But even with a cane, Yan Jingchuan still couldn’t walk independently.

Medical staff promptly brought over a wheelchair. Chen Shu helped him sit, then wheeled him downstairs to the car, half-supporting and half-carrying him into the vehicle.

Looking at Yan Jingchuan’s unchanged pallor, Chen Shu frowned, Are you sure you want to rest at home?

It was just exhaustion—how could Yan Jingchuan be this weak?

Yan Jingchuan said, Yes.

His firm tone made Chen Shu close the car door and get in on the other side.

After Zhang Shi took the passenger seat, the car soon started and headed straight for Hengtai Residential Area.

At the building entrance, Chen Shu again wheeled Yan Jingchuan upstairs.

Zhang Shi went ahead to open the door, but before entering, a dark shadow burst out and began circling excitedly around Chen Shu and Yan Jingchuan.

Woof!

Wangcai jumped at Chen Shu’s legs, whining incessantly.

Yan Jingchuan leaned back against the chair back and closed his eyes, the intense feeling of separation within him finally easing somewhat.

Wangcai’s been really pent up this past week, Zhang Shi explained to Chen Shu. He couldn’t go to the hospital, had to stay home alone, and kept missing you both. He hasn’t been eating well lately, always leaving lots of food behind. Chen Shu stroked Wangcai’s head, making his tail wag so hard his whole rear end shook.

Hearing Zhang Shi’s words, he said, Thank you.

Zhang Shi replied, No need for thanks, Mr. Chen. It’s my duty.

He then held the door wide open so Chen Shu could wheel the chair inside.

Wangcai trailed behind Chen Shu, running back and forth excitedly, his paws tapping rhythmically on the floor all the way into the bedroom.

After Chen Shu helped Yan Jingchuan freshen up, the meal Zhang Shi had ordered en route arrived.

Director Yan, have something to eat?

Chen Shu took the food and placed it before Yan Jingchuan, Rest more after you finish.

Seeing Chen Shu stand up, Yan Jingchuan tensed slightly, Where are you going?

Chen Shu said, Wangcai’s too restless. I’ll take him outside.

No need, Yan Jingchuan said, It’s fine.

Even at this closest distance, the spreading weakness within him continued growing, only slightly alleviated. If Wangcai weren’t nearby, it would worsen further.

So Chen Shu released Wangcai, letting him move freely.

After the meal, Yan Jingchuan managed to bathe before returning to bed.

Chen Shu turned off the light and lay down beside him, Sleep now.

Yan Jingchuan grasped his hand, You still haven’t told me how you are.

Chen Shu said, I’m fine.

When the safety wire unexpectedly snapped, he’d adjusted his posture before landing. Combined with the soft mat below and perhaps some luck, he’d rolled to disperse the impact without severe pain. Post-awakening examinations showed only minor abrasions.

Judging by these injuries alone, there was no reason for him to lose consciousness—let alone for seven full days.

Yan Jingchuan asked again, Were you conscious during this past week?

He and Chen Shu had similar experiences—unexpectedly falling into a coma and inexplicably waking up.

Chen Shu’s situation was even more peculiar than his, making him unable to avoid overthinking.

No,” Chen Shu said. I only had a dream.

Yan Jingchuan tightened his grip. A dream?

Chen Shu replied, Alright, you can ask about it after you’ve had some sleep.

Out of habit, he pulled Yan Jingchuan into his arms. Only after closing his eyes did he remember what had happened a week ago. He opened them again, and his eyes, now adjusted to the darkness, saw that Yan Jingchuan had already fallen asleep as instructed.

So quickly?

Chen Shu took one last look at him and said nothing more.

—

The next morning, Chen Shu got up first to wash up.

Afterward, he opened the dog crate, filled Wangcai’s food bowl, and, seeing that Yan Jingchuan was still asleep, took the script and sat down on the living room sofa.

Wangcai didn’t even glance at the dog food. Instead, he followed Chen Shu out, jumped onto the sofa, and settled down beside him.

Chen Shu reached out and patted him. Not hungry today?

Chen Wangcai rested his head on Chen Shu’s lap.

Remembering Zhang Shi’s words from the previous night, Chen Shu set the script aside. Let’s go, I’ll take you out.

But even for this usually favorite activity, Wangcai showed little interest, staying motionless on his lap.

Chen Shu frowned. Are you sick?

Just then, Zhang Shi knocked and entered on time. Seeing only Chen Shu in the living room, he walked over and bent down to pet Wangcai.

Chen Wangcai glanced at him, then got up and nestled into Chen Shu’s arms, avoiding his hand.

Zhang Shi was taken aback. Why won’t Wangcai let me pet him again?

After his persistent efforts as a devoted follower, he had finally earned the privilege of walking the dog and had grown closer to Wangcai, who no longer minded being petted. Why had things suddenly reverted to how they were before?

Chen Shu, looking at the dog in his arms, was also surprised.

Never mind,” Zhang Shi shook his head and changed the subject. Mr. Chen, where’s Director Yan?

Still asleep.” Chen Shu checked his watch and stood up, heading toward the bedroom.

Yan Jingchuan was still lying in bed, showing no signs of waking.

Chen Shu approached and said softly, Jingchuan?

Yan Jingchuan remained in a deep sleep.

But Director Yan’s body clock was always precise. Since Chen Shu was already up, there was no reason for Director Yan not to be awake.

Seeing this, Zhang Shi hesitantly asked, Has Director Yan… had a relapse of his old condition?

It had been so long since the last episode that he thought Director Yan had fully recovered.

Was that not the case after all?
