Chapter 79

In the crowded filming location where many eyes could see, Zhang Shi could only pick and choose relatively unimportant tasks to handle. Even so, Director Yan still appeared absent-minded.

Stop looking at Chen Shu, Director Yan!

Zhang Corporation’s capabilities can’t compare to Yan Corporation’s, Director Yan!

If this continues, Yan Corporation will really go bankrupt, Director Yan!!

But Director Yan couldn’t hear his frantic inner thoughts. What frustrated Zhang Shi most was that even when distracted, Director Yan could still effortlessly guide him.

Forget it.

What’s the use of thinking so much? Director Yan wouldn’t hear a single word.

Anyway, he just heard the director say they would wrap up soon.

Hang in there, Zhang Shi!

Victory is just ahead!

Zhang Shi took a deep breath, flipped to the next page, and looked up to speak when he suddenly saw Director Yan’s expression drastically change. In the blink of an eye, the chair in front of him was empty. Director Yan had rushed out, even forgetting to take his cane.

Zhang Shi was stunned.

He had never seen such an expression on Director Yan’s face before.

Only when he heard the surrounding chaos erupt did he snap back to reality and quickly stand up.

Turning around, he witnessed the scene of Chen Shu falling from a height.

The set had already descended into chaos.

Some were screaming, some were shouting angrily, some were rushing forward, others were frozen in shock…

Zhang Shi saw Director Yan’s running figure heading straight for Chen Shu.

This back, which had always appeared composed and powerful, now seemed so panicked today.

The fall seemed to last only an instant.

Fortunately, Chen Shu himself remained calmer than anyone else.

From afar, Zhang Shi saw Chen Shu adjust his posture mid-air before landing heavily amid the screams, creating an infinitely amplified dull thud on the soft mat.

Zhang Shi held his breath, unable to imagine what Director Yan must be feeling after witnessing this scene firsthand.

He immediately called the driver before quickening his pace to reach Director Yan’s side.

The program crew’s doctor had already arrived on scene.

Zhang Shi stopped in his tracks, his first glance falling on the unconscious Chen Shu. He wanted to speak, but when he turned and saw Director Yan, he sealed his lips tightly.

Yan Jingchuan knelt on one knee beside Chen Shu’s shoulder. His back, which people usually looked up to, now appeared hunched. Zhang Shi noticed both of his hands trembling slightly, his right hand hovering over Chen Shu’s hair, not daring to apply pressure or make full contact.

The doctors were urgently examining Chen Shu.

Please step back! The patient’s condition is unclear right now. Don’t move him or get too close!

Hearing the doctor’s words, Zhang Shi frowned and stepped forward, only to see Yan Jingchuan silently rise and take a step back.

The director, aware of his identity, hurried forward to apologize: I’m sorry, Director Yan! He was just anxious to save him!

Yan Jingchuan’s gaze remained fixed tightly on Chen Shu’s face.

Chen Shu’s eyes were closed, faint creases still visible between his brows.

Was the landing too painful?

Yan Jingchuan suppressed his breathing.

How was he doing now?

Zhang Shi steeled himself: Director Yan…

Yan Jingchuan lowered his gaze.

The scenes from moments ago replayed before his eyes.

His heart was beating too fast, creating an illusion of being torn open in his chest, layer upon layer.

Investigate, he said, his tone carrying a calm, sharp chill. Get to the bottom of this.

The director listened with growing unease and hurriedly said, Director Yan, rest assured, the program crew will fully cooperate to find out what caused Teacher Chen’s injury.

Yan Jingchuan could no longer hear anyone else’s voice.

After what felt like an eternity, the ambulance arrived. Chen Shu was lifted onto a stretcher and urgently transported to the hospital.

Yan Jingchuan accompanied him to outside the emergency room.

Before long, everyone else had arrived too, standing outside the door waiting for news.

It was impossible to tell how much time had passed when the doctor finally emerged and addressed the group. The patient was brought in just in time and is not in serious condition. The coma is due to a concussion, and barring any complications, he should wake up by tonight. However, the leg injury requires hospitalization for further observation. Who is the family member? We need someone to complete the admission procedures.

Zhang Shi let out a long, heavy sigh.

Thankfully, it wasn’t serious.

He stole a glance at Yan Jingchuan and noticed Director Yan’s terrifyingly cold expression had finally softened slightly. I’ll handle it, Yan Jingchuan said to the doctor.

After completing the procedures and returning, Zhang Shi found Chen Shu had already been transferred to a hospital room.

Yan Jingchuan sat by the bed, holding Chen Shu’s hand.

Everyone else stood to the side, not making a sound. The room was so quiet you could hear a pin drop.

Zhang Shi knew Director Yan was waiting for Chen Shu to wake up and didn’t disturb him. He moved aside as well, quietly attending to some documents on his own. Yet, from dusk to dark, and from dark to deep into the night,

Chen Shu still hadn’t woken up.

This… The doctor flipped through the sparse medical records, unable to offer a clear explanation. The patient’s cranial injury is indeed minor, with no internal or external trauma. Under normal circumstances, he should have woken up long ago.

After hearing the same explanation all night, Yan Jingchuan’s patience was wearing thin.

Twenty minutes later, a helicopter landed on the rooftop, and Chen Shu was transferred to another hospital for further examination.

But the results were no different.

Under normal circumstances, Chen Shu should have woken up long ago.

Yan Jingchuan stood by the bed, his gaze fixed intently on Chen Shu. Arrange for another expert consultation, he ordered.

The hospital director looked as if he had something to say but hesitated.

The patient’s condition wasn’t complicated; on the contrary, it was straightforward and easily understood.

Yet, despite its simplicity, no one in the entire hospital had found any clues.

The test results couldn’t be wrong, which meant the patient might be suffering from a new, undetectable condition.

If that were truly the case, even gathering more experts for consultations would be futile.

But facing Yan Jingchuan, he didn’t dare voice such thoughts.

Understood, the director could only say. I’ll arrange it immediately.

After the director left, Zhang Shi spoke up. Director Yan, it’s almost dawn. Why don’t you get some rest?

Yan Jingchuan walked to the bedside and sat down, taking Chen Shu’s hand once more.

The warmth in his palm was still familiar, and the pulse was still beating.

Yan Jingchuan closed his eyes, pressing the familiar warmth to his lips, yet an entirely unfamiliar, scorching ache surged in his heart.

Wake up, he whispered hoarsely. Chen Shu…

Zhang Shi opened his mouth to speak but glanced at the long-cold meal on the table and retreated silently to his spot.

Outside the window, the first light of dawn broke, and hurried footsteps approached from the hallway.

After yet another fruitless effort, Zhang Shi clenched his fists and couldn’t help but ask, Has there ever been a similar case like this before?

Hearing his question, the director hesitated before replying, Although not exactly the same, there is…

Zhang Shi’s eyes lit up. There is what?!

The director instinctively glanced at Yan Jingchuan. Well, Director Yan’s situation back then was somewhat similar to this…

After the car accident, Director Yan had fallen into a coma and hadn’t woken up for a long time. He was diagnosed as being in a vegetative state but would inexplicably regain consciousness periodically. Now, he was almost fully recovered. The entire process had discrepancies with the test results, and no reasonable explanation could be found.

Hearing this, Yan Jingchuan’s hand tightened abruptly.

Similar to his own situation.

If Chen Shu’s consciousness had also transferred to some stray animal, there was still hope.

As long as there was even a sliver of hope, no matter how faint, he would never let go.

Chen Shu, don’t break your promise…

A voice seemed to whisper by his ear.

Chen Shu tilted his head slightly, but when he listened carefully, it had already vanished.

Hey, are you even listening to me?

Chen Shu turned his gaze back to Fang Shijie and said calmly, To the airport.

You’re really not going to the celebration banquet? I know you’ve won multiple rounds and don’t care about these awards anymore, but all your previous wins were for Best Actor! This time it’s for Best Director and Best Picture! Even if you skip the celebration, could you at least show some excitement? Domestic media is going crazy praising you – the vocabulary they’re using is absolutely endless, though it’s still the same old rhetoric: breaking into international markets, national pride, their expectations for you are practically sky-high.

Chen Shu looked at him.

Strangely, this face he knew so well suddenly felt like something from a past life when he looked at it recently.

Fang Shijie let out a long sigh. Also, you’re always appearing and disappearing like a dragon. Your fans see me, your manager, more often than they see you offline. Every time they see me, it’s like they’re seeing the plague – the pressure is immense on me.

These words also felt familiar, as if he’d experienced this before.

Chen Shu’s brow twitched slightly. You don’t have to see them either.

Knew it’d be useless talking to you about this. Fang Shijie sighed in resignation, then changed the subject. Oh right, why don’t you go back with me? I need to stay behind to negotiate a few collaborations for you. You should stay and enjoy yourself for a few days too.

Chen Shu said, No.

Fang Shijie shook his head. Sometimes I really wonder if you’re made of flesh and blood. You don’t have any of the seven emotions and six desires ordinary people have. What do you even earn so much money for?

Chen Shu said, There will always be people who need money.

Ah… I know you’re a great philanthropist blessed by a hundred lifetimes, planning to donate everything to Project Hope in your will. Fang Shijie said, What I mean is, you should think about yourself too. You’ve achieved fame and success, but you’re still the same as always. Chen Shu, have you thought about the future?

The car sped rapidly toward the airport.

There’s no room for anyone else in your life. Film is your career, and you’ve reached the pinnacle of your career. Consider living like an ordinary person for once.

Find what brings you joy – not what you’re good at, but what you genuinely want to do, what you want to have, what can make you smile, what can truly make you happy.

Chen Shu, when will you finally find it?

The scenery outside the car window blurred past indistinctly.

Chen Shu heard the voice by his ear again.

Chen Shu…

Fang Shijie hadn’t stopped talking, filling the car with his chatter.

Chen Shu leaned back in his seat, closing his eyes to rest.

Suddenly, a man’s face flashed before his eyes.

He frowned.

We’re at the airport.

The car slowly came to a stop.

Fang Shijie accompanied Chen Shu to the boarding gate.

Just as Chen Shu turned to leave, he heard footsteps running up behind him.

Chen Shu! Fang Shijie grabbed his arm with sincere force. Stay behind?

Chen Shu turned back to look at him. What?

Fang Shijie said, Don’t board this flight. Stay here.

Chen Shu asked, Reason.

Just keep me company. You’re always leaving me behind to return to China alone. Fang Shijie’s eyes were earnest. What do you say? Just this once, as long as you don’t board this plane.

Just as Chen Shu was beginning to waver—

Chen Shu, you promised me, you told me to wait for you to come back…

The voice was right by his ear.

Chen Shu frowned.

Fang Shijie asked, What’s wrong?

Chen Shu glanced at him. I’ll keep you company next time.

Fang Shijie said, Why wait until next time? You have nothing to do back home anyway.

Chen Shu replied, Enough, stop fooling around. The plane is about to take off.

With that, he brushed off Fang Shijie’s hand and continued boarding.

After just a few steps, he heard Fang Shijie shouting loudly behind him again.

Chen Shu!

Chen Shu’s footsteps hesitated slightly.

But the face that flashed through his mind was too vivid, urging him to keep moving forward.

Don’t go!

Chen Shu didn’t look back.

—

The memory of the plane crash exploded violently in his mind. Chen Shu’s eyes snapped open.

Only when he saw the ceiling above him did he notice the distinct hospital scent of disinfectant in the air.

He closed his eyes again to soothe his dizzy, swollen head, inevitably recalling the dream he’d just had.

It was the first time he’d dreamed about the past. Everything in the dream remained vividly clear, as if he’d experienced it all over again. Only Fang Shijie’s plea to stay was pure imagination—it hadn’t happened before he boarded the plane.

As Chen Shu tried to raise his hand, he realized it was restrained.

He looked over and saw Yan Jingchuan leaning against the bedside with his elbow bent, fingers slightly curled as he propped his temple, feigning rest with tightly furrowed brows.

The slight pull on his palm was immediately noticed. Yan Jingchuan frowned and opened his eyes, meeting Chen Shu’s gaze. He stared blankly for a long moment, his grip tightening increasingly.

Chen Shu said, Jingchuan?

You’re awake?

Yan Jingchuan snapped back to reality, his voice hoarse beyond recognition. How do you feel?

As he sat up straight, Chen Shu noticed his unusually pale complexion, his thin lips almost devoid of color.

After speaking, Yan Jingchuan stood to press the call button, but before he could steady himself, he swayed slightly and stumbled forward.

Careful. Chen Shu braced himself with one arm on the bed and reached out to hold him, frowning. How long have I been asleep?

Yan Jingchuan pressed his thin lips into a tight line, gripping Chen Shu’s arm firmly. A week.

Chen Shu was slightly stunned.

The length of a dream—how could it have been so long?

He looked at Yan Jingchuan again. What about you? How long has it been since you slept?

Before losing consciousness, Yan Jingchuan’s illness was far from leaving him this weak.

Yan Jingchuan didn’t respond.

Using the last of his strength, he held tightly to Chen Shu, refusing to let go, before closing his eyes and allowing his consciousness to sink into deep darkness.
