Chapter 5

Chen Shu had indeed brought a dog to the program. Not only that, but from the camera footage, it was clear he had openly started mixing formula milk for the dog in the dormitory.

As soon as his suitcase was opened, it was filled with dog food.

The director: …

Was he here to compete in the talent show or to raise a dog??

Director, what do you think… the assistant asked, should we take Chen Shu’s pet away now and have staff send it back home?

The director pondered for a moment before answering.

He looked at Chen Shu in the filming footage, then turned his attention to the main channel of the live stream.

Although Chen Shu had already left the scene, bullet screen comments from viewers were still filled with his name. Hot search topics about him continued to rise, with no sign of cooling off.

Anyone could see that this newcomer had strong audience appeal from the very start of the program. Moreover, with his solid skills, he was clearly a potential goldmine.

Given that, there was no need to cause trouble over a dog.

After some thought, the director turned and asked, Do the rules explicitly state that pets aren’t allowed on the island?

The assistant was taken aback. Probably not, right?

How could such a thing be written into the contract? There was no precedent for it!

The director waved his hand. Then just leave him be.

The assistant nodded. Okay.

Oh, and there’s no need to specifically inform him about this either. Capture his natural reactions when he’s unaware, the director added.

…Okay. The assistant glanced at Chen Shu on the monitor.

The key point was, even if they didn’t inform him, it didn’t seem like this guy had any intention of hiding it… right?

Chi Yu, standing in front of the camera, had the same thought.

Chen Shu, what if they find out you brought Wangcai here? Chi Yu quietly located the direction of the camera, subtly stepping sideways to block the view of both the man and the dog.

After moving into position, he noticed the suitcase packed full of dog food and was shocked again. Why did you bring so much food? This should last half a year, right?

Chen Shu glanced at Chen Wangcai. He eats a lot.

No matter how much he eats, he can’t finish all this! Chi Yu looked at the tiny puppy, then at the suitcase full of dog food. Wangcai is a dog, not a pig.

Chen Shu said calmly, He eats more than a pig.

… Yan Jingchuan ignored them.

He was just a dog now—he couldn’t understand human speech.

Although Chi Yu didn’t believe it, he didn’t press further after hearing Chen Shu’s response. Still, he couldn’t help feeling worried.

They even had to hand over their phones here—would pets really not be kicked out?

But then again, Wangcai had been out in the open for so long, and no staff had come to intervene. Maybe the program team didn’t plan to interfere.

With that thought, he relaxed a little, squatting down to pet the lucky Wangcai who had slipped through the cracks.

Yan Jingchuan, still holding the pacifier in his mouth, avoided Chi Yu’s hand and walked over to sit by Chen Shu’s feet.

Unaware of Chi Yu’s gesture, Chen Shu casually picked Wangcai up by the scruff of his neck and tossed him onto the bed.

Chi Yu’s hand was still mid-air. Seeing that Chen Shu hadn’t noticed, he awkwardly withdrew it and stood up, pretending to organize the items provided by the program team in each room.

There’s actually a tablet here! Chi Yu checked it over. We get 60 minutes of internet time per day, divided among the six of us—ten minutes each.

But when he opened it, he realized it only had a search app installed; no other downloads were allowed.

Better than nothing, he supposed.

Chi Yu carried the tablet back to the bedside and opened the app. When he saw the names on the search ranking chart, his fingers tightened slightly.

…Yan Group’s decision-making error this time could very likely trigger a series of chain reactions.

Yan Jingchuan’s gaze flickered slightly as he looked up toward the opposite side.

The person watching a video with lowered head—he remembered it was Chi Yu, who used to live next door. They hadn’t interacted much since moving apart, and he hadn’t expected to encounter her here.

His impression of Chi Yu was vague, only recalling she had a pleasant personality and often followed him around during childhood, accompanying him everywhere.

Indeed, no one expected Yan Jingchuan’s accident would cause such severe internal turmoil within Yan Group.

While that’s true, the accident only happened a few days ago. This situation naturally tests the team’s emergency response capabilities, especially for a behemoth like Yan Group. Some trial-and-error risks during this period are actually within acceptable limits.

Haha, then let’s wait and see!

Hearing the conversation from the video, Yan Jingchuan withdrew his gaze.

His car accident had been suspicious from the start, so the company’s rapid descent into chaos was within his expectations.

He just wasn’t certain who would be so eager to seize power without any regard for consequences.

However, the top priority now was to quickly escape his current situation and return to his own body.

After his unintentional attempt last time, the stinging pain in his mind had eased after several days of rest, and the hunger had disappeared thanks to Chen Shu’s attentive feeding. But that soul-deep warmth had never reappeared.

He didn’t know how long the aftereffects would last—he needed to be more cautious going forward.

Eh? Why is there a dog here?

Dog? Where?

Chi Yu, who had been engrossed in watching, was startled by the voices at the door. She quickly closed the page before responding: Ah, it’s Chen Shu’s dog.

It’s so cute!

A German Shepherd? It’s still so small—how many months old is it?

Can I pet it?

Chen Shu, can I hold it?

Yan Jingchuan frowned.

He had never been surrounded and stared at like this before.

Seeing Chen Shu still standing by the bathroom door, he rose with the pacifier in his mouth, stepped down from the bed using the suitcase, and sat on the slippers beneath the bed.

He’s shy around strangers and doesn’t like being touched. Chi Yu answered the crowd before Chen Shu could, speaking from experience.

The trainees expressed their disappointment but gathered to observe from a distance, trying to engage the dog verbally.

With their phones confiscated and not being very familiar with each other, they finally found something novel to focus on. Most people had come over upon hearing the commotion.

When the evaluations ended, the main livestream channel’s screen flashed and switched to the trainees’ dormitory.

The main hall stood sparsely populated with just a few people.

The camera panned across each area, revealing mostly empty dorm rooms.

When it reached the six-person room section, it showed crowds packed three layers deep outside Room 4.

Viewers grew curious, filling the bullet screen comments with questions.

What are they looking at?

What’s happening inside?

Soon, the program hosts and mentors arrived at the dormitory. Seeing the scene, they approached with cameras following closely behind.

Qu Jiangxue leaned in: What’s going on here?

Chen Shu brought a dog. A trainee answered without turning around, then realized the question came from a female voice. Turning back to see Qu Jiangxue and the four mentors behind her, he flushed red and stood at attention. Good afternoon, mentors!

This exclamation made the surrounding crowds quickly turn around and stream out from the room, automatically making way beside the five staff members.

Qu Jiangxue continued peering inside: Chen Shu brought a dog?

Liang Han chuckled softly and cleared his throat.

Qu Jiangxue then spoke seriously, Well, the initial evaluation has concluded. First, congratulations to everyone on your good results. However, today’s ratings do not represent the final outcome. Everyone must continue to strive for improvement.

As soon as she finished speaking, Chen Shu also emerged from the doorway.

Qu Jiangxue glanced at him before turning to lead everyone back to the large screen where the live broadcast had been playing earlier.

The staff had, at some point, replaced the video with a new one.

In the next twenty-four hours, you will face a new assessment, Qu Jiangxue said as she started the video. This is our theme song.

After the video finished playing, she continued, The assessment will begin twenty-four hours from now. We will reevaluate everyone based on the initial ratings and your proficiency with the theme song.

Ji Xinyan added, The updated ratings are crucial for your first public performance. You must give it your all.

Having debuted in a boy band himself, he felt a special connection to these young, aspiring trainees.

Qu Jiangxue nodded. One more reminder: the theme song assessment will also be broadcast live. Be prepared.

After explaining the rules, she left with the other mentors.

The trainees were caught off guard.

With the evening’s live broadcast over, they had assumed the next one wouldn’t be until the first public performance. They hadn’t expected another so soon.

But the moment the five mentors left, the electronic clock on the door lit up, displaying a twenty-four-hour countdown.

Suddenly, time felt urgent, and the atmosphere grew tense.

The large screen looped the theme song continuously, allowing the trainees to watch and learn.

The camera panned around, capturing the trainees diving straight into practice. The final shot lingered on the countdown before the live broadcast ended.

The stream went black, but the audience was left wanting more.

Since they’ll be practicing for twenty-four hours anyway, let us watch!

And Chen Shu’s dog—show us the dog, show us the dog!

Chen Shu, the first to bring a dog to an audition show.

The production team is ruthless. They talked about the dog so much but didn’t show it. That’s too much!!

Seeing the feedback, the director was surprised by how much the audience cared about a dog.

He glanced back at the monitor.

In Room 4 of the six-person dorm, the mysterious little dog that had garnered so much attention had already returned to the bed.

Chen Shu was sitting by the bed, studying the song lyrics.

Soon, Chi Yu returned from outside.

He had immediately grabbed a tablet to record the theme song and now walked straight up to Chen Shu. Come on, let’s learn the dance first.

Chen Shu didn’t refuse. He stood up and joined Chi Yu at the table to sit down.

In just over an hour, the two had mostly mastered the dance steps.

Kind-hearted and helpful, Chi Yu went to teach his teammates next door after finishing.

Among their roommates, only Jiang Xing was a B-grade; the other three were C-grades. Seeing how quickly Chi Yu and Chen Shu had learned, they wanted to ask for help. But with Chi Yu next door and Chen Shu remaining in the room—someone they didn’t dare approach casually—they could only memorize the lyrics while waiting for Chi Yu to return.

Halfway through memorizing, Jiang Xing went to the bathroom.

As soon as he entered, he backed out, covering his nose. Why is there… this here?

His teammate asked, What is it?

Jiang Xing whispered, Poop.

Chen Shu was just preparing milk for Wangcai and glanced down at the dog upon hearing this.

Chen Wangcai only drank milk and made no sound.

Chen Shu stood up and walked to the bathroom. Sorry, I’ll clean it up.

Jiang Xing then remembered that Chen Shu had a dog, and the poop on the floor was indeed on the laid-out paper.

He opened his mouth and hurriedly said, Chen Shu, I didn’t—I forgot about your dog.

It’s fine, it’s my fault, Chen Shu said as he crouched down and threw the tissue into the trash can.

Watching his movements, Jiang Xing secretly regretted his words, but since they were already spoken, he could only hope Chen Shu wouldn’t misunderstand him as having any complaints.

—

When Chi Yu returned from next door, he saw only four people inside and couldn’t help but ask, Where’s Chen Shu?

Jiang Xing said, He went to walk the dog.

Chi Yu suddenly understood and walked to the window to look down, indeed spotting Chen Shu walking into the distance with Wangcai.

It was still late at night, and the figures of the man and the dog quickly blended into the deep darkness.

Yan Jingchuan silently followed Chen Shu forward, unsure what had prompted this man’s sudden whim to go out tonight.

Alright, come here.

Unable to discern Wangcai’s thoughts, Chen Shu simply walked to a nearby bench, sat down, and casually placed a tissue on the ground.

Yan Jingchuan looked down at the paper.

Chen Shu’s voice came from above again.

Go ahead and poop.
