Chapter 49

Chen Shu unleashed Wangcai and watched as it ran straight to the sofa and pounced on Yan Jingchuan.

Not asleep yet?

Hm. Yan Jingchuan held a freshly opened document in his hand but hadn’t started reading it, merely lifting his hand to pinch the bridge of his nose.

He had returned in a hurry and was still feeling somewhat dizzy.

Chen Shu said, Why are you staying up so late today?

Usually when he returned later, Yan Jingchuan’s bedroom door would be firmly shut.

Today had been his latest wrap-up, and he had assumed Yan Jingchuan would already be asleep.

Yan Jingchuan finally opened his eyes to look at him: What, is my presence here interfering with some private matters of yours?

Chen Shu keenly detected the faint restlessness in the air and promptly replied: No.

Only then did Yan Jingchuan change the subject: You’ve been returning very late these past few days.

I need to catch up on the progress I missed during my days off. Chen Shu had already walked to the sofa and taken out dog food to feed Wangcai. Today is the last day.

Hearing this reason, Yan Jingchuan pressed his lips together: My apologies.

Chen Shu paused his actions, turned to look at him, and said with a laugh: You’re the only one who never needs to apologize to me.

Yan Jingchuan was slightly taken aback.

He looked into these smiling eyes before him, caught off guard by these words.

Woof!

The impatient Wangcai jumped from Yan Jingchuan’s arms onto the sofa, pawing at Chen Shu’s arm.

Chen Shu had no choice but to continue feeding him.

Yan Jingchuan watched his profile as he lowered his gaze.

When Chen Shu looked up and met his gaze, he raised an eyebrow: What?

The answer that seemed ready to emerge lingered in his heart. Yan Jingchuan stared straight at Chen Shu: Why?

Chen Shu chuckled lightly: Has Director Yan forgotten? You’re my sugar daddy.

Sugar daddy?

Yan Jingchuan froze.

The not-yet-clear emotions suddenly cooled, unnoticed by their owner.

He tightened his grip on the cane resting against the armrest, his face darkening as he looked down at the unread document on his lap.

Chen Shu didn’t disturb him.

When it came to Yan Jingchuan, he would do his best to fulfill every request.

Regardless of the reason, Yan Jingchuan had genuinely extended a helping hand during his most difficult time.

The contract offer from Huayuan Media, the subsequent resources, not to mention the investments given to his original family’s parents.

Simply repaying debts wouldn’t have been so troublesome – what Yan Jingchuan had given them was a career, a future for starting over.

In that case, starting today, you’ll move into the master bedroom.

Hearing Yan Jingchuan’s words, Chen Shu paused his movements again.

Noticing Chen Shu’s gaze, Yan Jingchuan didn’t look up.

During the two days at the old residence, he could maintain his energy at night without returning to Wangcai’s body, but he was gradually weakening again after returning.

Since Chen Shu didn’t care about this matter in the slightest, there was no need for him to continue considering Chen Shu’s feelings.

Chen Shu simply said: Alright.

After feeding Wangcai, he got up to briefly pack his luggage and moved directly into Yan Jingchuan’s bedroom.

He didn’t have many belongings, with Wangcai’s supplies taking up most of the space.

After setting up the dog crate and washing up in the bathroom, he returned to find Yan Jingchuan already standing by the bed.

Chen Shu lifted the covers and lay down, only to be immediately commanded.

Turn your back to me.

Chen Shu glanced at him, suppressing a smile as he turned to lie on his side: Is this acceptable, Director Yan?

Hm. After responding, Director Yan looked at the empty space between them, his gaze sweeping over Chen Shu’s back before turning off the light and lying down.

—

The next day.

Chen Shu was first awakened by movement in his arms.

Yan Jingchuan seemed to sense something and froze mid-movement as he tried to extricate himself from Chen Shu’s embrace. After a brief pause, he looked over.

Their eyes met.

A faint smile danced in Chen Shu’s eyes. Morning.

Seeing that he was already awake, Yan Jingchuan replied expressionlessly, Morning.

He immediately got up, turning his back to Chen Shu as he stepped out of bed, grabbed his cane, and headed toward the bathroom.

Watching his retreating figure, Chen Shu chuckled softly.

Yan Jingchuan pretended not to hear and didn’t look back.

Chen Shu also got out of bed. When he entered the bathroom to wash up, he let out a soft cough. Director Yan—

Director Yan cut him off with a stern face. Don’t speak.

The corners of Chen Shu’s lips had just begun to lift—

And no laughing either, Yan Jingchuan added coldly, having caught his expression in the mirror.

Chen Shu suppressed the smile on his lips, letting it linger only in his eyes as he nodded in agreement.

After they finished washing up, the two walked out of the bedroom together.

Zhang Shi was waiting in the living room.

Ever since discovering that Director Yan was always more amiable when Chen Shu was around, the first thing he’d learned was to tag along for meals.

Moreover, with the numerous tasks Director Yan had assigned recently, he needed to report on his work as soon as possible.

When he saw Yan Jingchuan emerge, he was about to greet him but then noticed Chen Shu walking alongside him. His lips twitched slightly.

It hadn’t even been a few days, and they couldn’t resist being together.

Now that their relationship was out in the open, they didn’t even bother hiding it in front of a subordinate like him!

Director Yan, Mr. Chen, good morning.

Chen Shu said, Morning.

After the three had breakfast in the dining room, knowing that Yan Jingchuan and Zhang Shi had business to discuss, Chen Shu left directly with Wangcai.

On the way, He Qiyu tried several times to talk to him about something, but seeing him engrossed in reading the script, she had to swallow her words.

Upon arriving at the set, Chen Shu continued rehearsing the scenes from last night with Duan Xu that they hadn’t finished. Not long after, filming officially began.

Cui Jiancheng watched the footage on the monitor with satisfaction. During the lunch break, he announced to everyone, At this pace, we’ll probably wrap up a few days ahead of schedule.

His words immediately stirred excitement among the crew.

Filming often dragged on for months with little entertainment. Even though they’d moved to an outdoor location, it was still work—seeing the same scenery every day had long grown tedious.

Wrapping up early meant they could go home and rest sooner, giving everyone something to look forward to.

Duan Xu, sitting with Chen Shu, exclaimed, Great! After we wrap, I’m going to sleep for three days straight!

Mu Qingxue added, Me too. Filming has completely messed up my sleep schedule. All I want to do is sleep.

Seeing everyone’s eagerness to finish, Cui Jiancheng hurriedly cautioned, We can only wrap early if we maintain this pace. Don’t lose momentum now.

Chen Shu remained silent throughout.

During this period, He Qiyu had been scouting variety shows for him to join. Even if Moon in the Mirror wrapped early, he’d likely have to continue rushing through schedules.

Not far away, He Qiyu overheard Cui Jiancheng’s remarks.

After Duan Xu and Mu Qingxue returned to filming, she finally approached Chen Shu to share what she hadn’t been able to say that morning. Chen Shu, how about taking a break for a while after we wrap?

After all, Chen Shu was still slated to star in Han Shan’s film.

While variety shows could bring in money, she preferred that Chen Shu dedicate more time to refining the script.

This was his first opportunity to break into the big screen, and it concerned his future.

Moreover, movie audiences were far more critical of actors than idol drama viewers.

Han Shan’s Nameless was still in preparation, with about three months left in the pre-production phase.

The glass window covered only by a thin white curtain was easily penetrated, with brilliant sunlight spilling across the entire bed.

When he opened his eyes, he saw the face close before him, no longer surprised.

After finishing Moon in the Mirror, Chen Shu went straight into filming this movie just two months later. She hadn’t originally been worried, but even after receiving Han Shan’s script, Chen Shu still hadn’t given up the idea of earning extra income, which made her feel somewhat uneasy.

Having witnessed Chen Shu’s capabilities during this production, she had no doubts about his acting skills.

But actors need time to transition—from stepping out of one character to immersing into the next.

If Chen Shu spent this period on variety shows, how much time would he really have left to delve into his new role?

Variety shows are always available.

But a film by a major director like Han Shan doesn’t come around often.

Thinking this, He Qiyu added, There are only two months between the wrap of this project and the start of ‘Nameless.’ I think we can afford to wait. Is it really necessary to chase after this money?

Chen Shu said, It is necessary.

He Qiyu was left speechless: …

Was he that obsessed with money?

To gamble his future for such a small sum—it was completely putting the cart before the horse.

Chen Shu, why not wait until after ‘Moon in the Mirror’ airs and ‘Nameless’ is released before taking on variety shows? Your market value will be higher then, and you’ll earn more. Taking one now is actually selling yourself short, He Qiyu patiently advised. I know you’re doing this to pay off debts—

Chen Shu looked up at her.

Meeting his gaze, He Qiyu instinctively paused and confirmed, You’re earning money to pay off debts, right?

Chen Shu said, No.

He Qiyu was taken aback. Then what for?

Since she insisted on getting to the bottom of it, Chen Shu didn’t hide it: I plan to invest in ‘Nameless.’

He Qiyu was stunned.

This was a reason she had never considered: Invest in ‘Nameless’?

Chen Shu said, Mm.

The script for Nameless was very polished, and with a renowned director at the helm, the final product would surely be of high quality. At the very least, it had a solid foundation, so he wouldn’t lose money.

But all he had was his earnings from Moon in the Mirror, which wasn’t enough leverage for a production like Nameless.

But… aren’t you supposed to pay off your debts? He Qiyu said. You need to think this through carefully. Investing in a film is very risky. Even Han Shan can’t guarantee that every movie will turn a profit for investors. If you’re just testing the waters with spare cash, I have no objection. But if you’re betting your entire savings, I really advise against being so impulsive.

Chen Shu said, This is my decision.

He Qiyu took a deep breath.

She knew that once Chen Shu made up his mind, he never changed it. But investing in a film?

Chen Shu had just debuted and was still too young. His perspective was too absolute, and he didn’t understand how deep the waters of the film industry could be. To invest his hard-earned money based solely on a script made her deeply concerned.

The more she thought about it, the more her unease shifted to something else entirely.

She was also aware of Chen Shu’s family debts.

If this money were lost, would he be able to handle it?

She looked at Chen Shu, wanting to persuade him further but unsure where to start, so she left with her worries to gather her thoughts.

Chen Shu didn’t pay any more attention to her movements.

As dusk fell, his scenes for the day were finished.

But before wrapping up, Cui Jiancheng stopped him: We’re changing locations tomorrow. How about everyone getting together for a meal tonight?

Duan Xu and the others had already changed and were waiting for him.

Seeing this, Chen Shu said, Let me make a call first.

Cui Jiancheng said, Sure.

He Qiyu followed behind Chen Shu, her expression stiff.

Just a simple gathering, and he still had to report to his clingy partner…

She was still pondering when she heard Chen Shu say:

Are you coming?

He Qiyu: ……!

Her eyes widened in shock as she watched Chen Shu hang up the phone. Only then did she react, exclaiming urgently, How could you invite her!

With so many people at the gathering, if Chen Shu brought along that clingy person, wouldn’t that be announcing their relationship to the whole world!

Cui Jiancheng, hearing He Qiyu’s voice, asked curiously, What about inviting someone?

He Qiyu quickly hushed: It’s nothing.

Chen Shu had already put away his phone: Director Cui, can we add one more person to the gathering?

You want to bring someone? Cui Jiancheng was first surprised, then said, Of course you can!

The die was cast.

He Qiyu felt her head swelling like a barrel.

But with so many people around, she couldn’t argue with Chen Shu there. She could only accompany Chen Shu back to the hotel first, but since Duan Xu was with them on the way, she never found an opportunity.

Arriving at the hotel entrance.

She watched helplessly as Chen Shu got out of the car, picked up the person halfway, and returned together.

At this point, there was no other way.

He Qiyu straightened her face.

When that clingy person got in the car, she must give her a warning—let her know what should be done and what shouldn’t be said!

The car door opened again.

He Qiyu cleared her throat and turned toward the door.

At the first glance of the newcomer, her straightened posture shrank by half.

Dir…Director Yan…?
