Chapter 46

Do you have pajamas? Chen Shu put the towel back and asked Yan Jingchuan.

He hadn’t planned to stay overnight when he came, so he didn’t bring any personal items.

Yan Jingchuan went to fetch a new set and handed it to him.

After changing in the bathroom, Chen Shu returned to the bedside, lifted the blanket to sit down, and picked up the script again.

He was reading Han Shan’s new film, The Nameless.

The plot was excellent—tightly woven with clear, self-consistent logic. Though not overly complex, it was well-suited for general audiences and of high quality.

He valued this script highly.

However, the film was still in preparation and wouldn’t start shooting for another two months.

When Yan Jingchuan came out of the shower, he saw Chen Shu still holding the script, leaning against the headboard. Without saying anything, he walked directly to the other side and sat down.

His back remained still by the bedside for a long time.

Noticing from the corner of his eye, Chen Shu casually asked, Something on your mind?

Yan Jingchuan replied almost immediately, No.

Only then did Chen Shu turn to look at him. Am I disturbing you?

No. Not wanting Chen Shu to notice anything, Yan Jingchuan changed the subject. At tomorrow’s banquet, you’ll need to stay by my side the entire time.

Chen Shu said, Okay.

Yan Jingchuan said, Thank you.

Before returning, he had guessed Yan Jinqing’s reason for feigning illness to summon him back, but he wasn’t clear about Yan Jinqing’s arrangements.

He hadn’t been informed about this banquet in advance, which was why he had to ask Chen Shu to rush over from the film set at the last minute.

But perhaps it was for the best. This opportunity would allow Yan Jinqing to give up and stop interfering in his personal life, making things easier in the future.

On another note, he still couldn’t be separated from Wangcai for too long.

Two days was his estimated safe limit. Beyond that, if forced back into Wangcai’s body, he would need twice the time to recover his energy, with half the results.

Thinking of Wangcai.

Yan Jingchuan’s gaze shifted slightly as he turned to look toward the foot of the bed.

Wangcai, full and content, lay fast asleep in his dog crate, completely dead to the world.

You can let Wangcai sleep on the bed.

Hearing Yan Jingchuan’s sudden suggestion, Chen Shu didn’t look up. Hmm?

Yan Jingchuan maintained a calm expression and steady tone. You usually sleep with him. There’s no need to change that because of me.

Hearing this, Chen Shu set the script aside again and turned to look at him.

Yan Jingchuan still sat on the edge of the bed, as if he had only mentioned it casually.

Chen Shu looked at him, slightly puzzled. How do you know I usually sleep with Wangcai?

… Yan Jingchuan’s back stiffened slightly. After a moment, he said stiffly, I guessed.

The voice behind him soon spoke again.

Then you guessed accurately, Chen Shu said. But he’s already asleep. No need to trouble him.

Although Yan Jingchuan had spoken with certainty earlier, unlike a mere guess, Chen Shu didn’t dwell on it.

Perhaps it was a coincidence.

Chen Shu soon averted his gaze and reached to turn off the bedside lamp. Let’s sleep.

The bed shifted slightly.

Yan Jingchuan turned back to see Chen Shu already with his eyes closed, so he had no choice but to lie down on his side of the bed as well.

Chen Shu usually woke later than him.

Even if there were any unexpected events this time, Chen Shu wouldn’t notice.

Yan Jingchuan took one last look at Chen Shu’s profile before slowly closing his eyes to sleep.

The next day.

Dawn broke.

Disorderly footsteps echoed from far to near in the hallway.

Yan Xinli’s voice followed closely.

Dad, I think we should just forget it!

Yan Jinqing didn’t slow his steps. Shut up.

Wen Jiao encountered them on the way, still confused. Xinli, what is Dad trying to do?

Yan Xinli wore a helpless expression. Dad wants to sneak into Jingchuan’s room while he and Chen Shu are still asleep—

What do you mean sneaking away! Yan Jinqing glared at him before continuing, Something just doesn’t feel right. This might be Jingchuan finding someone to fool me.

He had ordered someone to investigate Chen Shu’s background overnight.

The records showed that Yan Jingchuan and Chen Shu had suddenly started living together one day, having only met once by chance before that.

How could a minor celebrity—a man at that—with no prior connection to Jingchuan suddenly become his lover out of nowhere?

It must be an act.

Wasn’t Chen Shu’s profession acting anyway?

Yan Jinqing marched straight to Yan Jingchuan’s bedroom door, cutting off Yan Xinli’s incessant attempts to dissuade him, and reached for the doorknob.

Yan Xinli hurriedly looked at Wen Jiao.

Wen Jiao said, Dad, if you go in without Jingchuan’s permission, aren’t you afraid he’ll get angry?

Yan Jinqing paused briefly.

He frowned deeply but insisted, No, I have to get to the bottom of this!

Yan Jingchuan was planning to bring Chen Shu to the banquet tomorrow. Once everyone found out he preferred men, who would dare let their daughters near him?

His own plans falling through was one thing, but Yan Jingchuan’s future was what truly mattered.

He even suspected that Yan Jingchuan’s real lover might be someone else, and that he was only using Chen Shu to break the ice first, making it easier for him to accept.

In that case, he’d rather it be true.

Nothing else mattered—as long as it was a girl, everything could be negotiated.

Dad!

Enough. Yan Jinqing silenced Yan Xinli and pushed open the door to Yan Jingchuan’s bedroom.

The priority now was to expose this facade.

Yan Jingchuan had never slept in the same bed with family members since childhood, let alone outsiders.

Seeing that he had actually opened the door, Yan Xinli grew frantic, grabbing Wen Jiao and whispering urgently, What do we do? What do we do?

Wen Jiao had no solution. Worried something might go wrong, she could only follow him in.

Yan Xinli walked behind Yan Jinqing alongside her, exchanging anxious glances.

But as they moved forward, Yan Xinli accidentally bumped into Yan Jinqing’s back and jumped in surprise.

Why had he stopped?

Yan Xinli thought, stepping out from behind Yan Jinqing, and whispered pleadingly, Let’s go out before Jingchuan wakes up, Dad!

Yan Jinqing didn’t respond.

He stared straight ahead, his eyes filled with stunned disbelief.

Yan Xinli followed his gaze and slowly gaped.

Contrary to Yan Jinqing’s expectations, there were two people lying on the bed.

Even more surprising was how closely they were entwined.

Yan Jingchuan lay on his side facing Chen Shu, his right arm draped over Chen Shu’s waist and abdomen, still sound asleep.

Chen Shu’s right arm was pillowed under Yan Jingchuan’s neck, his hand resting on his shoulder, holding him close even in sleep. Though lying on his back, Chen Shu had turned slightly, almost face-to-face with Yan Jingchuan.

In the dim light, their breaths mingled, a visible testament to their intimacy.

Yan Xinli felt a pang of envy.

He and Wen Jiao didn’t even hold each other that tightly when they slept.

Jingchuan had always been independent and disliked physical contact. Thinking back, Yan Xinli couldn’t recall a single instance of Yan Jingchuan initiating a hug as a child, let alone as an adult.

This scene was something he couldn’t have imagined even if he tried.

Since his suspicions began last night, no moment had made him realize more clearly than now.

His son—the son he had once worried was devoid of emotion—had actually, truly, fallen in love…

Wen Jiao was the first to recover: Dad, do you believe it now?

Yan Xinli tried to chime in.

Dad—

He had just uttered a single word.

Woof!

Yan Xinli jumped in fright.

Yan Jinqing also snapped back to reality.

Wangcai scrambled up and threw himself against the edge of the cage: Woof! Woof!

Yan Xinli hurriedly said, Run!

But it was already too late.

Awakened by Wangcai’s barking, Yan Jingchuan frowned and opened his eyes.

Seeing the three figures illuminated by the light from outside the door, his frown deepened: Grandfather?

The wrinkles on Yan Jinqing’s face stiffened. He sharply elbowed Yan Xinli behind him.

…… Clutching his painfully throbbing kidney, Yan Xinli thought quickly and began clapping and singing, Happy birthday to you…

Yan Jinqing joined in the clapping.

However, Yan Jingchuan was no longer focused on why the three were here.

Feeling the warmth against him and the breath brushing his cheek, his body gradually stiffened. Realizing Chen Shu was also waking up, he was about to pull away when a hand on his shoulder firmly held him in place.

The discordant, chaotic singing of three out-of-sync voices reached his ears.

When Chen Shu opened his eyes and saw Yan Jingchuan’s face so close, he was surprised at first. Then, turning to see the three people not far away, he understood.

He tightened his arm slightly, pulling the person in his embrace even closer, and whispered in Yan Jingchuan’s ear, Don’t move yet.

The deep, slightly hoarse voice of someone just waking up, mingled with warm breath, brushed past his ear.

Yan Jingchuan’s heartbeat faltered for a moment as he glanced at him.

Chen Shu said softly, We’re lovers now. Doing this won’t make your family suspicious.

Yan Jinqing watched the two whispering on the bed, the corner of his eye twitching.

Wen Jiao, noticing his expression, quickly pulled the two men out as soon as the song ended.

With a click, the door closed.

Only then did Chen Shu release Yan Jingchuan.

As Yan Jingchuan moved away from his shoulder, Chen Shu suddenly frowned.

Yan Jinqing and the others couldn’t have been inside for long. If Yan Jingchuan had only moved closer for the act, why was his arm already numb so quickly?

Chen Shu propped himself up on the bed with one hand, sitting up halfway. The sore, numb feeling in his arm intensified.

He looked at Yan Jingchuan, who was already walking around the foot of the bed toward the bathroom: Director Yan, last night—

Nothing happened last night, Yan Jingchuan cut him off sternly without turning back.

The next second, the bathroom door slammed shut.

His unusual reaction was enough to confirm the truth.

Chen Shu withdrew his gaze, rubbed his sore muscles, and chuckled softly.

No wonder it was the same last time.

So Yan Jingchuan had this kind of habit.

After getting up, the two took turns washing up and went downstairs together.

Yan Jingchuan’s jaw was set, and he remained silent the entire way.

Chen Shu glanced at him, a smile in his eyes. Don’t worry, Director Yan, I’ll definitely keep this secret.

Yan Jingchuan stopped and turned to look at him. You are never to mention this matter again.

Chen Shu readily agreed: Alright, I won’t mention it.

When they arrived at the dining room, Yan Jinqing and the other two were all there.

Seeing Yan Jingchuan’s expression, Yan Xinli shot a resentful look at Yan Jinqing.

Yan Jinqing, feeling guilty, picked up his bowl of porridge and said nothing.

But after breakfast, he brooded in the garden until the afternoon, and finally couldn’t resist asking the butler to summon Chen Shu.

However, he hadn’t expected it.

Not only did the butler bring Chen Shu, but Yan Jingchuan was following closely behind him.

Yan Jinqing said discontentedly, Jingchuan, are you really not at ease even if I have a private chat with Mr. Chen?

Yan Jingchuan replied, Grandfather, if you have something to say, you can say it in front of me.

Yan Jinqing was so angry he was speechless. He could only snort coldly, exchange a few casual pleasantries, and then let them leave. Before the evening banquet began, he couldn’t find any opportunity to be alone with Chen Shu.

Watching Yan Jingchuan and Chen Shu attend the banquet together, he knew all his arrangements had been in vain.

Seeing that the situation was already settled, Yan Jinqing excused himself by claiming he wasn’t feeling well and went upstairs shortly after the banquet started.

Wen Jiao and Yan Xinli had no choice but to remain at the venue to entertain the guests.

Yan Jingchuan had no interest in such occasions. After Yan Jinqing left, he also withdrew from the banquet with Chen Shu.

Back in the bedroom, Yan Jingchuan raised his hand and pinched the bridge of his nose.

Seeing him head toward the study, Chen Shu said, It’s your birthday today. Why not take a day off?

Yan Jingchuan replied, Today is no different from any other day.

He still had an entire corporation to manage, so Chen Shu didn’t press further.

Then, remembering something, Chen Shu added, Wait.

Yan Jingchuan turned to look at him.

Chen Shu picked up the suit jacket he had worn yesterday from the back of the sofa, took a velvet gift box from its pocket, and handed it to Yan Jingchuan.

Yan Jingchuan was slightly taken aback but reached out to accept it.

Inside the gift box was a pair of sapphire cufflinks.

Yan Jingchuan gazed at the pair of blue gems shimmering under the light, the words already on the tip of his tongue but left unspoken.

For the first time in his life, he didn’t know how to voice his thoughts.

Why give him a gift?

In Chen Shu’s eyes, wasn’t he just the other party in their contract?

After a long pause, he only asked, You’ve been with me all day today. When did you have time to buy this?

Chen Shu said, Not today. It was yesterday.

Yesterday?

Yan Jingchuan quickly recalled that Chen Shu had indeed gone out briefly before they departed yesterday morning—the morning after he heard about the birthday banquet.

Yan Jingchuan took one of the cufflinks from the box, his thumb stroking the smooth surface of the sapphire.

It felt cool to the touch.

Yet it was inexplicably, strikingly beautiful.

Chen Shu said, I bought it in a hurry, and it’s nothing particularly valuable. I hope you don’t mind.

Yan Jingchuan looked up at him, the lines of his lips already subtly softened: I like it very much. Thank you.

I’m glad you like it.

Chen Shu met his gaze, smiling as he said, Happy birthday.
