Chapter 11:

The average score was 8.9.

Gu Wei stared fixedly at the electronic screen, his disbelief and anger steadily rising.

How was this possible?!

In just two days, how could Chen Shu jump from 7.3 directly to 8.9? That was a full 1.6-point difference!

Could the average score have been miscalculated?

Or was there an issue with the ranking?

Please welcome the second group of Planetary Fission trainees to the stage.

Hearing the announcement from above, Gu Wei snapped back to attention.

Facing the cameras, he quickly forced a smile and turned to exchange fist bumps with his teammates for encouragement.

His teammates still carried traces of shock and premature disappointment on their faces.

The mini-test competition pitted the Invincible Youth Team against the Most Shining Team in head-to-head matches, with the winning group earning the right to choose their performance order during the first round of public performances.

Chen Shu’s team scored 8.9 points—0.2 points higher than even the Pond Fish Team, whom they hadn’t considered challenging in the first place. This was the highest score in history. With their own historical best being only 8.4, how could they possibly compete against Chen Shu?

But time waited for no one.

The group could only head out together, each lost in their own thoughts.

As Gu Wei led the way through the corridor to the evaluation room, he heard excited laughter and chatter from up ahead.

Captain, we got 8.9!

Heh, Teacher Su must be satisfied this time, right?

The two teams met face-to-face at the corner.

Jiang Xing remembered that Gu Wei had cheered for them in the waiting room and added, Wishing you great results!

A flicker of irritation passed through Gu Wei’s eyes.

When Chen Shu was ranked last, these words felt like a joke to him;

But now that Chen Shu was ranked first, in his view, Jiang Xing was undoubtedly mocking and provoking him—nothing good.

Still, for the cameras’ sake, he kept his thoughts off his face, gave a slight tug at the corner of his mouth, and brushed past Jiang Xing.

Jiang Xing was puzzled by his sudden coldness but shrugged it off, turning to catch up with Chen Shu.

Captain, where are we heading next? The practice room?

No, Chen Shu said. We’re resting today. We’ll resume practice tomorrow.

With the mini-test over, they wouldn’t have any more camera time in the upcoming live broadcast. After seven days of intense training, it was time to relieve their tired muscles, relax their minds, and recover their energy.

Hearing this, Jiang Xing and the others cheered and rushed downstairs.

Chen Shu parted ways with them at the entrance and returned to the dorm first.

Only when he reached the door did he notice a long table set up beside the dorm entrance, lined with phones arranged in numerical order.

The phones were all the same model, outdated, with only calling functionality—not even text messaging was available.

As a reward after the mini-test, the program allowed trainees to freely use these phones for one hour. After the hour was up, the phones would automatically lock.

A friendly reminder was also posted on the table: all cameras would be turned off before the live broadcast ended and would restart one hour after the broadcast concluded.

Chen Shu picked up his phone and returned to the room, where Chi Yu was on a call.

Seeing Chen Shu enter, Chi Yu didn’t avoid him, continuing to sit quietly on the edge of the bed, listening with his head bowed.

Wangcai was lying on the bed, unusually not drinking milk.

I understand, Chi Yu said, then paused. Dad, what you just mentioned—about Jingchuan possibly having woken up—what exactly happened?

Yan Jingchuan?

Chen Shu glanced at him.

Chi Yu murmured, Why is there such a rumor? Has someone seen him?

Chen Shu didn’t disturb him and went to take a shower in the bathroom. When he came out, Chi Yu had already ended the call and was sitting by the bed, gazing blankly at the sea and sky outside the window.

Chen Shu, he murmured, I really want to leave the island.

Knowing the cameras weren’t on, he spoke without restraint.

Chen Shu asked, To see your friend?

My dad said the Yan Corporation has some major moves recently. I didn’t really understand it, but he said if it weren’t for my friend’s instructions, his assistant wouldn’t have made those decisions on his own. Also, my dad’s partner personally heard a Yan Corporation board member questioning the assistant about his health condition.

At this point, Chi Yu turned to look at Chen Shu, pursing his lips. So I want to go see him, to find out if he’s really getting better…

Chen Shu remained silent.

According to the plot, Yan Jingchuan wasn’t supposed to wake until much later in the story. Even if Chi Yu went to see him now, there would be no change.

Of course, I’m just talking, Chi Yu didn’t wait for his response and forced a smile. This is a completely closed environment. There’s no way they’d let me come and go freely.

Yan Jingchuan glanced at Chi Yu.

He wasn’t surprised that news of his brief awakening had leaked. After all, many doctors had been present, and with so many people around, secrets were hard to keep. Besides, he hadn’t planned to conceal it for long—just one night, or even one afternoon, was enough for Zhang Shi to complete the necessary preparations.

He just hadn’t expected to hear the latest developments from Chi Yu.

Never mind, let’s not think about this, Chi Yu took a deep breath and smiled. Next week’s live broadcast is the real public performance. Let’s work hard together! I saw your team’s average score is 8.9, that’s really amazing. I haven’t even warmed up my first-place seat yet.

Chen Shu could see his forced smile but didn’t call him out, only saying, There’s still a chance during the public performance.

As he finished speaking, Jiang Xing’s voice came from outside the door.

Captain, come quick! The rankings are updated—we won!

Hearing his urgency, Chen Shu and Chi Yu walked to the common area together.

The large screen wasn’t showing a live broadcast this time, only the rankings.

Fourth place: Team Shine For You with 《Planetary Fission》, Captain Gu Wei, average score 8.5.

Though it was 0.1 points higher than their mock evaluation score, they still lost compared to the first-ranked team.

Jiang Xing couldn’t contain his joy. He glanced at Chen Shu’s profile before bumping shoulders with Xiong Xiaolei. Shouldn’t we celebrate this?

Xiong Xiaolei asked, How should we celebrate?

Jiang Xing grinned and whispered something in his ear.

Xiong Xiaolei’s eyes lit up. We can do that? Then what are we waiting for? Let’s go!

Talking animatedly, they put their arms around each other’s shoulders and left the dormitory.

Not long after they left, Gu Wei returned with his team, picked up his phone, and went straight to his room with a dark expression.

Chi Yu frowned and instinctively looked at Chen Shu with concern.

He knew Gu Wei’s personality well, especially since these two had never gotten along. Given Gu Wei’s nature, losing to Chen Shu definitely wouldn’t be taken lying down.

But then he remembered they were still recording, and all 《Here For You》 stages were broadcast live. Even with his company’s backing, Gu Wei couldn’t manipulate the competition or tamper with the live broadcast.

While still thinking, he noticed Gu Wei emerging from his room again.

Unlike the unpleasant expression he had when entering, he now looked relaxed, as if the ranking that had deeply affected him earlier no longer mattered at all.

Chi Yu’s frown deepened as his gaze lowered, landing on the phone in Gu Wei’s hand.

Who had Gu Wei called?

He looked back at Chen Shu, only to find Chen Shu’s retreating back, and couldn’t help but chuckle wryly at himself.

Chen Shu had never cared about Gu Wei in the first place, so why was he worrying needlessly?

If he wanted a debut spot—

Everything still depended on real skill!

—

Evening.

Dormitory.

Chen Shu had just returned from downstairs holding Wangcai and was unfastening the leash.

You’re back. Chi Yu handed him the milk bottle. It feels like Wangcai doesn’t really enjoy going for walks. You always end up carrying him back.

Chen Shu found it strange too.

After Wangcai had torn up the dorm last time, a concerned trainee had specifically told him that puppies at this age are full of energy and should be taken out more often to release their natural instincts, otherwise they might continue destroying the house.

But lately, whenever he took Wangcai out, the dog showed little interest in burning energy. After just a short distance, Wangcai would stop and refuse to go further, requiring Chen Shu to carry him back.

Thinking of this, Chen Shu looked down at him. Lazy and greedy—can there possibly be another dog like you in this world?

… Yan Jingchuan pressed his paw against the milk bottle and turned away.

He wasn’t a real dog. Going for walks would only drain his energy, hindering his recovery rather than helping.

Chen Shu wiped Wangcai’s four paws with a wet wipe and casually set him on the bed.

Before he could sit down, two people scurried into the room, glancing behind them like thieves before pulling off their caps. Captain!

It was Jiang Xing.

Behind him was Xiong Xiaolei.

Both wore light jackets, their chests bulging conspicuously.

Captain. Xiong Xiaolei hooked the door shut with his foot before continuing, Look!

With that, the two hurriedly pulled insulated bags from their jackets and placed them on the table.

As the bags opened, the rich aroma of barbecue instantly filled the room, fragrant and enticing.

Skewers of meat and foil-wrapped vegetables piled high on the table, along with two servings of crayfish.

You guys eat first. Xiong Xiaolei said, I’ll go get the others.

He slipped out the door, and Jiang Xing quickly closed it behind him.

Chi Yu asked in surprise, Where did this come from?

The island only had a small convenience store—no restaurants, let alone barbecue joints. The only way to get a proper meal was to leave the island.

Jiang Xing coughed lightly, turning off both their microphones before explaining, Well, there’s only one doctor with the team on the island, right? He doesn’t have proper equipment for serious illnesses, so I pretended to have a stomachache and had Little Xiong take me to the hospital. That gave us an excuse to leave the island.

This wasn’t a new trick—the production team usually turned a blind eye—but it wasn’t exactly honorable either. After sharing this not-so-secret method off-camera, he urged, Hurry up and eat! We rushed back with this. It’ll get cold if you wait.

The various skewers on the table were slightly charred, glistening with oil, and still steaming faintly. Combined with the aroma, they looked utterly mouthwatering.

But Chi Yu didn’t move.

After hearing Jiang Xing’s explanation, his thoughts raced, and he couldn’t help glancing at Chen Shu.

Chen Shu was holding a lamb skewer under Wangcai’s nose. Want some?

Yan Jingchuan waited for Chen Shu to break off the meat and feed it to him.

After eating the same dog food for over ten days, he had almost forgotten what human food tasted like.

It’s a shame you can’t have salt. Drink your milk. With that, Chen Shu patted Wangcai’s head, withdrew his hand, and went to sit at the table.

… Yan Jingchuan’s paw gripping the milk bottle tightened abruptly.

Chen Shu. Chi Yu, who had been watching from the side, waited until Chen Shu finished before shuffling over step by step. Could you do me a favor?

Chen Shu turned to look at him. What kind of favor?

I’m going to be sick tomorrow. I want you to help take me to the hospital. Chi Yu blinked meaningfully, as if foreseeing the future.
