Chapter 118 – Extra 17: School Beauty’s Secret Diary (3) (End)

“President Duan, what are you doing?” Pingtou, having finished his shower, emerged from the dormitory to fill his thermos at the hot water room. As he walked, he spotted Duan Yi pacing back and forth in the corridor.

Evening Self-Study had ended long ago, and everyone who needed to shower had already done so. Duan Yi stood shivering in the corridor, clad in a fuzzy autumn pajama set, exposed to the biting wind.

The sudden drop in temperature in late autumn had Duan Yi trembling from head to toe.

But without seeing Sheng Yunze, he refused to leave.

“Oh, I…”

Pingtou finished his sentence: “Looking for Secretary Sheng?”

His voice carried loudly, likely audible even inside the dormitory.

Duan Yi nodded. “Is he in?”

Pingtou: “Probably. I just saw him head to the showers.”

Pingtou poked his head into the dormitory. “Secretary Sheng? Secretary Sheng! That’s strange, he’s not here. Maybe he went to do laundry? Why don’t you come back later? Or if you have something urgent, you can tell me, and I’ll pass it on.”

Duan Yi replied glumly, “It’s nothing urgent. I’ll just wait a bit longer.”

Pingtou glanced at the weather outside, hesitated, then said, “Why don’t you come inside and wait? It’s freezing out here.”

Duan Yi recalled the unpleasant exchange he’d had with Sheng Yunze before returning to the dormitory and felt too uncertain to go in.

Why the hell am I feeling so insecure? he thought.

Was that even an argument just now? It shouldn’t count. I didn’t even lose my temper; I was just asking…

The dormitory door clicked open.

Pingtou turned his head, surprised. “Secretary Sheng, you didn’t go do laundry?”

Sheng Yunze was inside the dormitory. Duan Yi stood outside, his gaze fixed on the door, desperately hoping Sheng Yunze would invite him in.

But Sheng Yunze stubbornly refused to say the words. Sensing the slightly awkward atmosphere, Pingtou’s emotional intelligence suddenly spiked. “Perfect timing! I actually wanted to talk to you about something too. Come in and sit down; I’ll be right back after getting some water.”

Duan Yi’s mind couldn’t quite discern whether Pingtou was offering him an out, but he was indeed freezing outside.

Stepping into the dormitory, he was immediately greeted by the pleasant scent of shower gel, with a hint of dampness in the air.

Sheng Yunze had washed his hair and blow-dried it halfway, the damp ends still clinging to his pale neck.

Duan Yi sat on Pingtou’s bed, unable to find anything to say. Sheng Yunze didn’t acknowledge him either, plunging them into an even more awkward silence.

Until Duan Yi sneezed.

Only then did Sheng Yunze glance up at him, still without uttering a word.

Duan Yi rubbed his nose, his face pale from the cold wind outside. He had started feeling unwell the day before, and as his resistance weakened that evening, the dizziness and headache became more pronounced.

Sheng Yunze rummaged through a drawer and pulled out cold medicine granules. After mixing a packet with hot water, he placed the cup in front of Duan Yi.

Duan Yi picked at the desk with his fingers, staring at the eraser on the table, stubbornly avoiding the medicine.

Sheng Yunze remained standing, while Duan Yi kept his gaze fixed straight ahead.

After a moment, Sheng Yunze finally spoke, “Drink your medicine.”

Duan Yi let out a soft “hmph.” “Didn’t you say you didn’t want to talk to me?”

“You came to me first,” Sheng Yunze retorted.

Duan Yi dug in his heels. “I came to see Pingtou. Didn’t you hear him say he had something to tell me? That’s why I’m here.”

“Oh,” Sheng Yunze replied. “Nothing to say to me?”

Duan Yi whipped his head around, glaring at him.

Sheng Yunze’s pupils were dark and deep, like looking into an abyss.

The words that had been stuck in Duan Yi’s throat all night suddenly flowed smoothly: “I do.”

Sheng Yunze pulled Duan Yi to his feet, preventing him from sitting back down on Pingtou’s bed. He then guided him to his own bed, taking the medicine with him.

Duan Yi grabbed Sheng Yunze’s arm. “Don’t go out with Jian Qiao tomorrow.”

Sheng Yunze didn’t even lift his eyelids. “Why not?”

After a moment’s thought, he subtly changed his tone. “Why should I listen to you?”

Duan Yi stood there holding his glass, dumbfounded for a moment.

He hadn’t realized Sheng Yunze was so eager to go out with Jian Qiao.

Duan Yi knew Jian Qiao liked Sheng Yunze, but he hadn’t realized Sheng Yunze… liked Jian Qiao too?

A sharp discomfort welled up in his chest, as if something were blocking his throat, making it hard to breathe. His mood instinctively soured.

“Are you going out with her to… accept her feelings?”

Sheng Yunze tilted his head. “Are you afraid I’ll say yes?”

Duan Yi clutched his glass. “What’s it to me? Jian Qiao doesn’t like me anyway. If I can’t win her over, so be it.”

His attitude toward Jian Qiao had gradually cooled. Initially, he had pursued her with fiery passion. But after Jian Qiao used some mysterious force to transform their romantic relationship into a mother-son dynamic, Duan Yi’s feelings for her had gradually faded.

He realized he liked Jian Qiao the way he might like a flower—admiring its beauty from afar.

Sheng Yunze changed the subject. “Drink your medicine and go back to sleep.”

“Okay,” Duan Yi replied, frowning as he swallowed the bitter-sweet, foul-tasting cold granules. He felt his mood mirrored the medicine—bitter and hard to swallow.

He asked one last question: “Are you really going on a date with Jian Qiao?”

Sheng Yunze didn’t answer, instead opening a book and reading intently.

Duan Yi set down his cup and left, walking slowly, hoping Sheng Yunze would call him back.

But Sheng Yunze didn’t.

Back in his dorm, Jiang Wangshu asked, “Judging by your face, you got rejected, huh?”

Duan Yi ignored him.

He’d left his phone charging, and it was vibrating incessantly—Nan Yi had changed his number and was calling.

Duan Yi wasn’t in the mood to deal with Nan Yi. Jiang Wangshu suggested he answer one call, asking if he really hated Nan Yi that much. Duan Yi wanted to say he’d already forgiven Nan Yi for cheating.

Nan Yi had explained, and Duan Yi believed him. He didn’t blame him; if they couldn’t be lovers, they could still be friends.

Duan Yi didn’t want to hurt Nan Yi by telling him the truth.

In truth, he felt that being friends with Nan Yi was almost the same as being his boyfriend.

Of course, when they were dating, Nan Yi became incredibly annoying, constantly trying to kiss him.

Duan Yi simply couldn’t bear the thought of kissing a face he’d known since childhood. Every time Nan Yi leaned in, Duan Yi would laugh and push him away, declaring his inability to accept such intimacy.

He even tried to comfort Nan Yi, saying, “Honestly, you kissing me is no different from Jiang Wangshu kissing me. It’s not about you personally—I just can’t handle either of you.”

Nan Yi remained unconsoled.

Duan Yi explained that this was simply unavoidable.

Alpha pheromones naturally repel each other.

Duan Yi considered his bond with Nan Yi to be rock-solid. Wasn’t he a good friend? He’d even agreed to Nan Yi’s unreasonable request to date him.

Later, Nan Yi asked, “If Jiang Wangshu had been the one to ask you out, would you have said yes?”

Duan Yi paused, mentally scoffing, What difference would it make?

But not wanting to shatter Nan Yi’s fragile ego, he replied tactfully, “Xiao Jiang is only interested in women with big breasts and curvy figures.”

Duan Yi understood what it felt like to cherish a flower, a painting, or a kitten.

But he didn’t know what it felt like to like someone.

He silently climbed into bed, not even playing his favorite mobile game, Frozen Fire Forest.

Jiang Wangshu knocked on his bed, asking if he was feeling unwell.

Duan Yi feigned illness, turning to face the wall with his back to the dormitory. A pang of emotion welled up in his chest, and tears silently overflowed his eyes, trickling down his cheeks and soaking into the blanket.

When you have a cold, your heart becomes fragile too.

Even though it wasn’t a big deal, Duan Yi felt deeply wronged.

I’m feeling this awful, and he still has the nerve to go out and chase girls?

What kind of friend is that?

Duan Yi didn’t understand his own feelings.

It would have been fine if Jiang Wangshu did it, or Pingtou, Xiaobang, or Bookworm.

But Sheng Yunze? Absolutely not.

Just… absolutely not.

After crying for a while, Duan Yi exhausted himself and drifted into a fitful sleep.

His phone screen lit up briefly, as if someone had sent a message, but quickly went dark again.

The next morning, when Duan Yi woke up, his head was pounding like a drum.

His head felt like it was stuffed with cotton, and his face burned with an unnatural heat. He tried to speak, but his throat ached, and he was parched.

Duan Yi slept on the top bunk. When he sat up, he found the dormitory empty. Everyone had rushed home for the weekend, leaving the room eerily deserted. Not even a soul to fetch him a glass of water.

He glanced at his phone to check the time, his first thought being that Sheng Yunze was probably already on his date.

After a moment of blank staring, he slowly climbed down from the bunk and rummaged through his drawer until he found a box of medicine. He hesitated for a long time before deciding not to take it.

Duan Yi poured himself a glass of cold, stale water. It upset his stomach, and he lacked the energy to climb the stairs. He simply collapsed onto Jiang Wangshu’s neatly made bed.

Jiang Wangshu was meticulous about cleanliness, his bed impeccably tidy. The sheets and pillowcases had been freshly changed the day before, and the quilt felt soft and comforting. Duan Yi drifted off to sleep almost immediately.

He woke up to a commotion.

In his dream, he was being scooped up by an excavator. Duan Yi, who was terrified of heights, clung to the excavator’s bucket, afraid to move. He thought if he stayed still, he wouldn’t fall, but then the bucket began to shake violently.

The vibration jolted him awake.

As he came to, Duan Yi was still groggily wondering why the earth smelled like lavender.

He opened his eyes and saw Sheng Yunze’s face, then realized he was sprawled awkwardly in his arms. After a few seconds, Duan Yi finally spoke, “You didn’t leave?”

“You have a fever,” Sheng Yunze replied.

Duan Yi’s voice was thick with congestion, sounding almost like a whine. “Oh.” He asked, “What time is it?”

“8:40.”

Duan Yi mumbled, “Then you still have time to make your appointment…”

He struggled to get out of Sheng Yunze’s arms.

But it was too comfortable to move. Duan Yi feigned a half-hearted struggle before giving up, letting Sheng Yunze hold him.

The Alpha’s pheromones were cool and faint, but Duan Yi could detect a hint of them. He didn’t dislike this Alpha’s scent.

“Have you taken your medicine?” Sheng Yunze asked.

“No. Mix it for me, my hand is broken,” Duan Yi whined, his eyes still closed.

Sheng Yunze prepared the medicine for him. Duan Yi wanted to ask how Sheng Yunze had gotten to his dorm and how he knew he was sick, but the question was too long for his current energy levels. He decided to let it go.

He dawdled over taking the medicine, as if searching for a reason to stall.

Deep down, Duan Yi didn’t want Sheng Yunze to leave for his appointment so soon. All his “quirks” seemed to surface at once.

“My head hurts,” he said, rubbing his head.

“It’ll pass soon,” Sheng Yunze replied.

“It won’t!” Duan Yi retorted, opening his eyes to glare at Sheng Yunze before quickly shutting them again.

Sigh…

Duan Yi felt utterly pathetic.

With his eyes closed, he finally realized: What am I even doing? Am I sick in the head?

He collapsed weakly on the bed, drained of energy. “You can go now. I feel like I’m already better.”

“You look perfectly fine,” Sheng Yunze said sarcastically.

After a while, Sheng Yunze still hadn’t left.

Duan Yi felt like this prolonged reprieve from execution was dragging on too long. If Sheng Yunze didn’t leave soon, he wouldn’t want him to go at all.

He’d even cling to Sheng Yunze’s leg if necessary.

“Duan Yi,” Sheng Yunze broke the silence. “Are you still meeting Nan Yi today?”

Duan Yi’s heart ached. “Look at me! How could I possibly meet anyone like this?”

Sheng Yunze persisted, “But if you were feeling better, would you meet him?”

Duan Yi answered quickly, “No, I wouldn’t.”

Nan Yi only wanted to meet to get back together.

Duan Yi was growing increasingly annoyed with him. They hadn’t even broken up completely, so why did Nan Yi insist on being his boyfriend?

Inside Sheng Yunze, bubbles of peach soda began to fizz. Even the sky outside seemed bluer than before.

He said casually, “Then I won’t go either.”

Duan Yi: “?”

Sheng Yunze said, “I did it on purpose.” He stated calmly, “I didn’t agree to go out with Jian Qiao. I was deliberately trying to make you jealous.”

Duan Yi was stunned. “Why would you deliberately try to make me jealous?”

Sheng Yunze replied, “I don’t know.”

Duan Yi felt his fever must be getting worse.

His whole body felt like it was burning up.

He kept feeling like he should understand something, but in reality, he understood nothing.

He just lay there stupidly on the bed.

“…What do you mean, you don’t know?”

Sheng Yunze clenched his fist, then relaxed it. His Adam’s apple bobbed as he tried to speak calmly, but his voice still trembled with tension. “I don’t know means I don’t know.”

“Oh,” Duan Yi replied, his gaze drifting aimlessly. His heart began to race, the pounding so loud it nearly deafened him.

How strange.

Duan Yi stared at the bed frame, unsure why he was so nervous. His heart rate refused to slow down.

He tried to break the awkward silence in the dorm. “Could you lean in a little? This pillow is uncomfortable.”

Sheng Yunze leaned closer and asked, “Duan Yi, are you angry because I was going to hang out with Jian Qiao?”

Duan Yi closed his eyes and, mimicking Sheng Yunze’s stubbornness, retorted, “I don’t know either!”

As he finished speaking, Duan Yi opened his eyes and met Sheng Yunze’s gaze.

For some reason, both of them burst out laughing.

Sheng Yunze softened his movements and gently rested Duan Yi’s head on his lap. “Never mind,” he said.

He’ll find out sooner or later anyway, he thought.

The sky outside the window stretched clear and cloudless.

Only a winter and a spring remained until the anniversary of their relationship.
