What's Wrong with This Alpha? - Chapter 59
Chapter 59 – Nightclub Hot Flower
“How about we change the subject?” Jiang Wangshu suggested.
He quickly turned to Duan Yi. “Don’t get jealous yet. In my years of experience, when a newcomer challenges a childhood friend, the newcomer always wins.”
A sudden commotion erupted in the bar, and the music abruptly stopped.
A scream pierced the air from the southwest corner.
The awkward silence at Duan Yi’s table shattered as Jiang Wangshu leaped to his feet.
“What’s going on?” Duan Yi asked, his face blank. “I don’t know…”
Duan Yi’s jealousy surged, but out of the corner of his eye, he noticed Luo Yunshan staring at him.
Their gazes locked, and the air around them seemed to freeze.
Luo Yunshan had no idea that the handsome young Alpha before him was his white moonlight’s current boyfriend.
He was simply puzzled by Duan Yi’s sudden hostility. They had been friendly before, but now Duan Yi’s animosity was abrupt and inexplicable, leaving Luo Yunshan feeling deeply uncomfortable.
Luo Yunshan was a beautiful, gentle, well-mannered, and universally adored Omega—with a touch of mischievousness.
Luo Yunshan was an absolute killer with both male and female Alphas, yet Sheng Yunze was the only one who had ever rejected him.
After two years of conquering hearts, he had never encountered an Alpha who harbored any animosity toward him.
This left Luo Yunshan feeling somewhat defeated.
After all, Duan Yi was undeniably handsome, and being targeted by such a man still stung an Omega’s pride.
A man stumbled over from the next booth, clearly drunk and staggering with excitement.
“There’s an Omega in heat on the second floor!”
The occupants of the adjacent booth erupted in a chorus of “Holy shit!”
Scandalous gossip, especially of a salacious nature, always drew immediate attention.
“Going to a bar during heat? Are they insane?”
“Maybe they took something? The bartenders here are shady…”
“Didn’t that happen at Midnight Bar before? Omega inducers, you know…”
“Has anyone called the police? Did anyone call?”
“Yeah, yeah, we called the police, the Association, and the hospital…”
Duan Yi caught a faint, almost imperceptible whiff of Omega pheromones in the air.
The scent was sweet and cloying, but he couldn’t quite place it.
Jiang Wangshu, who wasn’t sensitive to Omega pheromones, glanced at Duan Yi. “Duan Bao, you okay?”
Jiang Wangshu had learned about Duan Yi being an Omega around the same time as Xiaoduan Dad.
His reaction had been nothing short of apocalyptic, as if the heavens themselves were crumbling.
Duan Yi had feared Jiang Wangshu would cut ties with him. But after a tense silence, Jiang Wangshu suddenly gripped his hand, tears welling in his eyes. “Xiaoduan, do you know why we became friends?”
Duan Yi: “?”
Jiang Wangshu: “Because both our brains are wired wrong! We’ve got… political issues—we’ve strayed completely from the socialist path!”
One Omega pretending to be an Alpha.
One Alpha pretending to be a Beta.
In the end, Jiang Wangshu even lamented Nan Yi’s fate with a poem. I return the pearl with tearful eyes, regretting we didn’t meet before you were married!
“Oooooooohhhhhhhh!!!!”
“Holy shit!!!”
“Did anyone record that?! I’m posting it on my feed!”
The Midnight Bar erupted into a second wave of cheers, even louder than before.
The music was even louder than before, almost deafening.
Duan Yi couldn’t help but cover his ears. Amidst the flashing red, green, and blue lights, he spotted a dark figure tumbling down from the bar’s second floor.
“Holy shit…” he muttered in awe. “This guy’s got a death wish! Jumping from the second floor like that!”
The moment the figure landed, he didn’t hesitate. He bolted straight for the exit.
Seconds later, several men in black suits stormed out onto the second-floor balcony, brandishing stun guns and snarling as they gave chase.
Duan Yi was stunned.
The kind of over-the-top, melodramatic chase scenes he usually only saw on TV were unfolding right before his eyes.
He grabbed a handful of sunflower seeds from the table and started cracking them between his teeth.
After a few minutes, he decided he had to share this insane spectacle with his boyfriend—and maybe use it as an excuse to check up on him. Brother, you better come clean. Did you rack up any romantic debts back in your youth? Like some childhood sweetheart you never told me about…?
He sent a text: Huabao, I just saw some crazy idiot jump from the second floor of the bar!
He followed up with a sarcastic message, “Do you think this guy’s being chased by his wife? Maybe he’s having some kind of spiritual affair with his childhood sweetheart?”
Half an hour passed with no reply.
Duan Yi frowned, thoroughly annoyed and feeling a pang of jealousy.
He furiously tapped his phone, then dialed the number directly.
Jiang Wangshu exclaimed, “Holy shit!” Zhou Yao chimed in, “That guy from the second floor seems to be running this way!”
Duan Yi, still dialing, said, “Normal. We’re right by the door. Where else would he run?”
Zhou Yao glanced at him. “Who are you calling?”
“Your sister-in-law,” Duan Yi replied dismissively.
Zhou Yao teased, “She’s not answering. Could she be out fooling around?”
Duan Yi scoffed. “Your sister-in-law is as virtuous as they come. She never leaves the house except for school and the library. How could she possibly be out fooling around? How else would she score 720 on her exams?”
Zhou Yao quickly agreed, “Brother Duan’s right!”
The next moment, the second-floor guy burst into the room and stopped right in front of Duan Yi.
Duan Yi, still blustering, continued, “Who would even want to fool around with that coffin-faced guy? No one hangs out with him but me. Besides, your sister-in-law told me he’s staying home to study this weekend. We have finals coming up, you know? He’s under so much pressure—terrified of failing and not being good enough for me—”
Then, a familiar ringtone sounded in Duan Yi’s ear.
The second-floor brother suddenly stopped—the ringtone was coming from his pocket.
He stood frozen before Duan Yi, in an eerie, as if suddenly petrified pose.
Even the forward lean from his run remained unchanged.
Duan Yi’s voice vanished into the air.
Under the dim, multicolored, yellowish lights, the two stood strangely and silently for a moment.
Duan Yi hung up the phone, and the ringtone on the second-floor brother’s phone, hidden beneath his hat, abruptly ceased.
Duan Yi: ……
Second-floor brother: ……
Duan Yi expressionlessly continued dialing Sheng Yunze’s number.
The second-floor brother’s phone instantly rang merrily.
Duan Yi: ……
Second-floor brother—forget it—
It was Sheng Yunze: ……
Answering the call, Sheng Yunze faced Duan Yi and said, “Hello?”
Duan Yi, with his usual deadpan expression, asked, “Are you provoking me?”
Sheng Yunze paused before replying solemnly, “My dad said you should never hang up on your wife.”
“Did your dad say anything else?” Duan Yi pressed.
Sheng Yunze pondered briefly, then answered earnestly, “A wife who hits her husband is too fierce. You can’t keep her.”
“Fuck!” Duan Yi snapped back to reality. “No, I’ll fuck you myself!”
“Where the hell did they go?!”
The man in the black suit strode forward through the crowd.
Before Duan Yi could finish his curse, he suddenly felt himself being lifted off his feet as Sheng Yunze pulled him into a run.
Jiang Wangshu exclaimed, “Holy shit!” He rubbed his chin, wondering, “Why am I saying ‘holy shit’ so much today?”
As if on cue, Luo Yunshan, for reasons unknown, suddenly darted out after them, following in their wake.
This time, it was Zhou Yao’s turn to shout, “Holy shit!”
His mind reeled with confusion, utterly unable to comprehend what had transpired in the past fifteen minutes.
How had Duan Yi been dragged away by that hot A from the nightclub?
Why was his unilaterally declared future boyfriend running after them too?
Why wasn’t Jiang Wangshu chasing after Duan Yi?
Should he go after them?
After a moment’s thought, he decided, “Since my future boyfriend is running away, I should probably follow!”
Just as he reached the entrance, police cars surrounded the Midnight Bar. An ambulance wailed nearby as paramedics rushed inside, creating an eerie scene.
But Duan Yi was too preoccupied with his own bizarre situation to notice the commotion outside.
Sheng Yunze gripped Duan Yi’s right arm tightly. Duan Yi strained his voice, yelling, “Weren’t you supposed to be home doing homework?! What the hell were you writing about? Your years at the bar?! You’re fucking relentless! Did you set yourself up with some hellish homework mode? Improving your English by listening to English lessons here? Seriously? Just… just… just this?!”
Sheng Yunze suddenly stopped walking. Duan Yi had a mouthful of complaints ready, but without hesitation, Sheng Yunze placed both hands on his waist.
Duan Yi: ?
Then he was lifted into the air.
Duan Yi: =口=!
He knew his boyfriend was strong, but he never imagined this level of strength. Duan Yi felt like a frail high school girl as Sheng Yunze hoisted him onto a sleek, all-black motorcycle.
Duan Yi was still sideways, legs dangling awkwardly, when Sheng Yunze swung his leg over the bike.
Terrified of falling, Duan Yi frantically grabbed Sheng Yunze’s shoulders, screaming, “This position is terrible! Aaaaaah—!”
The string of “aaaaahs” and the thunderous roar of the Ducati Devil’s engine faded into the nameless street as they sped away.
Sheng Yunze knew how to ride a motorcycle.
Duan Yi’s terrified, pale face was reflected in the black helmet visor.
Duan Yi finally dredged up this skill of his husband’s from the dusty recesses of his memory.
After they got married, Sheng Yunze’s personality had mellowed from his high school days. Actually, his wild side had never been too obvious—he was the quintessential “closet rebel.” At school, he was the model student, the “Shen Jiayi” of academic excellence, but outside, he was a skateboard-riding, motorcycle-riding “bad boy.”
Duan Yi squeezed his eyes shut, the four-to-five-grade northwest wind whipping his hair into a fashionable mess.
The motorcycle had somehow reached the Jiangbian. The winter night wind stung Duan Yi’s face. Summoning his courage, he opened his eyes and gasped at the breathtaking view of the riverbank, its shimmering waters reflecting in his wide eyes.
The tender moment lasted three seconds.
Sheng Yunze spoke, “Hold on tight.”
Duan Yi snapped back to reality. “Fuck! Do you think this position is reasonable? What the hell are you playing at, some kind of Young and Dangerous wannabe? If our characters were in a drama, it’d be Itazura na Kiss, you know!”
The position was indeed unreasonable. To avoid falling off, Duan Yi clung to Sheng Yunze like an octopus.
At the same time, Duan Yi felt a pang of shame. Motorcycles were supposed to be for picking up girls.
Riding one isn’t embarrassing; being the girl is.
Sheng Yunze spoke up, “Stop fidgeting. You’re blocking my view.”
Duan Yi protested, “Pull over! I want to get off! You know you’re breaking the law, right? You’re underage to be riding a motorcycle. Whose bike is this anyway?”
“Your sister-in-law’s,” Sheng Yunze replied.
It took Duan Yi a moment to realize Sheng Yunze was referring to Sheng Yunxi. Even his sister-in-law is this wild? he thought silently.
The Ducati Devil came to a stop by the Jiangbian River.
Duan Yi leaped off instantly. Sheng Yunze remained on the bike, one foot on the footrest and the other on the ground.
With his long legs, slender waist, and black jacket, Sheng Yunze exuded an indescribable charm as he removed his helmet. A sliver of his powerful waist was revealed, reminiscent of the alluring figures in 1990s Hong Kong films. The river reflected the ambiguous glow of streetlights, while the distant lighthouse cast a hazy glow, making him appear both ethereal and seductive.
His handsome face was now fully visible, as if he were about to be serenaded by a spontaneous rendition of “Deep Night Harbor.”
Then he spoke, shattering Duan Yi’s rose-tinted lens, “Pig, wipe your drool.”
Duan Yi: …Fuck!
“What drool?” Duan Yi actually wiped his mouth before realizing he’d been tricked. He immediately turned on Sheng Yunze, “Why are you dressed like that? Why didn’t you come out in a crop top? Why isn’t your neckline down to your crotch? Is that how a student should dress? Did you even wear long johns?”
Duan Yi took a step back, eyeing Sheng Yunze as if he were a young husband caught cheating.
So… you told me you were doing homework, but snuck out to pick wildflowers while I wasn’t looking? You’re trying to pull a fast one on me, aren’t you?
Sheng Yunze got off of the bike and leaned against it, probably feeling guilty, so he didn’t say anything.
“You lied about doing homework just to sneak out to a bar? How could you do that?” Duan Yi demanded.
Sheng Yunze just stared at him. As Duan Yi stared back, he suddenly froze, his gaze fixed on Sheng Yunze’s face.
The rational part of his brain frantically warned him this was Sheng Yunze’s beauty trap, but his body had already fallen for it.
In an instant, all his anger vanished.
Duan Yi, rarely having the upper hand with Sheng Yunze, immediately felt his authority as the “head of the household” restored. He pulled out ten yuan from some pocket and slapped it against Sheng Yunze’s cheek. “Beauty, how much for a night?”
Sheng Yunze was speechless: ……
Sheng Yunze bit Duan Yi hard, breaking the skin on his lips and leaving a shallow tooth mark on his chubby cheek.
Sheng Yunze’s little tiger teeth were like a devil’s fangs, leaving particularly noticeable marks.
As their kiss deepened, Sheng Yunze grew bolder. He pulled Duan Yi onto the Ducati Devil, ripped off his jacket, and bit through his thin undershirt.
His chest felt soft.
Duan Yi’s legs instinctively tightened around Sheng Yunze’s waist. A sharp pain shot through his chest, causing him to gasp. He lowered his head to peck at Sheng Yunze’s lips, then opened his mouth for a deeper kiss.
His mind kept repeating. Remember to settle the score… remember to settle the score… remember to settle the score…
The kiss grew more intense, and Duan Yi’s legs squeezed too tightly. Sheng Yunze slapped his butt.
Dazed by the kiss, Duan Yi parted his lips, wrapped his arms around Sheng Yunze’s shoulders, and looked up at him, tears still glistening in his eyes, mixed with confusion.
His expression seemed to ask. Are we done kissing?
…Why is he so skilled at this?
Sheng Yunze felt another wave of silent jealousy.
In the air, their pheromones slowly mingled, like a snail cautiously extending its antennae. A single touch sent a sensitive tremor through their bodies.
Duan Yi’s ears flushed crimson.
“I’m taking a bite,” Sheng Yunze commanded bluntly.
Duan Yi: ……
“Couldn’t you at least say ‘please’ a little more politely?”
Sheng Yunze replied casually, “You’re inviting me to take a bite.”
Duan Yi grumbled, “I was inviting you for a drink! You make it sound so simple.” He muttered, “With all these people around, it’s bad for public morals. Is this appropriate for us as Youth League members?”
Sheng Yunze nuzzled against him, hugging Duan Yi like a large, regenerative plush toy, and stayed still.
Duan Yi sat stiffly sideways on the motorcycle, letting Sheng Yunze lean against him quietly.
After a while, the Jiang Wind cleared Duan Yi’s head, and he remembered he needed to settle the score with Sheng Yunze.
He gave Sheng Yunze’s calf a light kick. “Hey.”
Sheng Yunze thought Duan Yi’s gesture reminded him of a high school girl picking a fight with her boyfriend for no reason.
True to form, Duan Yi confirmed his suspicion, “I’ll let you off the hook for studying so diligently at Midnight Bar. But tell me about your childhood sweetheart from overseas, hmm?”
Sheng Yunze: “Childhood sweetheart?”
Still playing dumb? Duan Yi thought.
Sheng Yunze genuinely wasn’t pretending. He couldn’t remember having any childhood sweethearts. “Who?”
Just as Duan Yi was about to answer, his phone rang. Jiang Wangshu was calling.
Jiang Wangshu asked where Duan Yi was and whether he was with Sheng Yunze.
Duan Yi answered, and Jiang Wangshu said, “Let’s have dinner together tonight.”
After a pause, Jiang Wangshu asked a serious question over the phone, “Can you hand the phone to Secretary Sheng?”
Duan Yi was puzzled but passed the phone to Sheng Yunze.
Jiang Wangshu greeted Sheng Yunze with an overly enthusiastic, Japanese-schoolgirl-like tone before getting straight to the point, “Jennifer—Xiaoduan’s newly appointed Rival—will be joining us for dinner tonight, Secretary Sheng. As Class One’s Academic Committee Member and your former Jiang Pinru, I offer you this advice from experience.”
Sheng Yunze: ……
Jiang Wangshu continued earnestly, “What kind of washboard do you prefer? The ‘Peach Soda’ with three-tenths serrated and seven-tenths flat, or the ‘Peach Oolong’ with four-tenths serrated and six-tenths flat? I’m offering a 50% discount on the second purchase.”
Sheng Yunze: “Where did you even get a washboard?”
Jiang Wangshu replied modestly, “Some ancestral crafts must not be forgotten.” He added, “This particular washboard was inherited from Nan Yi. He knelt on it back in the day. Now that you’re the second-generation successor, the tradition continues!”
