Xue Zhixiao walked alongside Teacher Guo, clutching her textbook tightly. Her polite smile masked the storm of thoughts swirling in her mind. “Teacher Xue, let’s go. Wait, why did you change clothes?” Teacher Guo asked, her voice curious.

“Oh, I spilled water on myself earlier and got dirty, so I changed,” Xue Zhixiao replied, her tone light but her cheeks warming slightly.

“I knew it. You wore a pink skirt this morning, and now it’s blue pants. I thought I was getting old and confused! But, Teacher, are you feeling okay? Your face is so red,” Teacher Guo said, tilting her head with concern.

“Oh, is it?” Xue Zhixiao touched her face, feigning puzzlement, though her heart raced. “Maybe because I ran to change and hurried back.”

Senior, you big jerk! she thought, her fingers tightening on the textbook as she cursed Li Minghao silently. He knew she had a class, yet he had teased her, delaying her, not letting her go, not giving her a quick release. Even when she changed clothes, he… Who would ever guess the refined, cold Doctor Li could be so wild and relentless? Her cheeks burned hotter at the memory, and she lowered her head slightly, quickening her pace toward the fork in the path. “Teacher Guo, I’ll go teach now. Let’s talk after class,” she said, her voice steady despite her flustered thoughts.

Meanwhile, in the infirmary, Li Minghao let out a sudden sneeze. “Doctor, do you have a cold?” a boy sitting across from him asked, his black-framed glasses slipping down his nose. He had a nerdy look and a habit of talking nonstop. “This weather shouldn’t cause many colds, right? More people get heatstroke. But it’s so hot, no one would go out in the sun.”

Li Minghao set down his pen and reached into his white coat pocket for a mask, but his fingers brushed something soft, something that wasn’t a mask. He froze, his eyes darkening as he realized what it was. Little minx! A mix of helplessness and amusement tugged at his lips, and a faint smile broke through his usual calm. He pulled his hand out and resumed writing the prescription, his expression composed once more.

“Hey, Doctor, did you just smile? Wow! I saw the doctor smile. If I tell my friends, will they believe me? They’ll think I’m making it up. What should I do? They won’t believe me!” the boy rambled, his eyes wide with excitement.

Li Minghao stood, prepared the medicine from the prescription, and handed it to the still-chattering boy. “Take it as prescribed for two days, then return for a follow-up. If anything unusual happens, stop and come see me immediately,” he said, his tone professional.

“Thanks, Doctor. That wasn’t a smile, was it? I don’t think it was,” the boy muttered, taking the medicine. As he walked out, he glanced back at the expressionless Doctor Li. “Was I seeing things?”

Just like a certain someone, always talking, Li Minghao thought, his mind drifting to Xue Zhixiao. He walked to the inner room, pulled out the lace underwear she had slipped into his pocket, and opened a locked cabinet. He placed it carefully beside the pink skirt she’d worn that morning. Unlike the nerdy boy, Xue Zhixiao never let silence linger. She’d pester him until he responded, whether with a spark of anger or a sigh of exasperation, her persistence always drawing him in.

Closing and locking the cabinet, Li Minghao’s eyes softened, warmed by memories of her laughter and teasing. Perhaps it was time to settle down, he thought, glancing at the green trees and red flowers swaying outside the window. At the very least, he should make their relationship public, to ward off the eager admirers circling his woman. He opened the unfinished autopsy report from the morning, and his mind was already planning to pick her up after work and try the new Italian restaurant nearby. When everything was settled, he’d plan their honeymoon and future carefully.
