Chapter 3 Calm Down Under the Night Sky

Huo Ya was the most outstanding person in the school. Besides serving as the student council president, he was also the winner of various major awards in Haicheng. He had a good family background, good looks, and excellent grades he had at all.

Once free from Lin Jing’s control, she became like a wild horse running free. On her second day of school, she got a perm and was caught red-handed by Huo Ya, the student council president. As punishment, she was made to do Frog Jumps on the playground, and she was seething with anger inside.

From then on, she held a grudge against Huo Ya, deliberately opposing him both openly and covertly.

“Is that so?” Hearing her reply, Huo Ya raised an eyebrow, his expression clearly spelling out “I don’t believe you” in bold letters!

“I saw you searching for something in the storage room earlier. What were you looking for?”

She had been so absorbed in her search that she hadn’t noticed him spying on her. What a miscalculation.

“Well… I was looking for something.”

He nodded. “Did you find it? Do you need help searching?”

“No, no.” She waved her hands hurriedly, eager to leave the room as soon as possible.

“I remember there was a photo frame of mine in my room. Where did it go?” He walked over and sat on the edge of the bed, picking up a ring from the bedside table and putting it on, his eyes scanning the room’s decor.

Zhou Lai felt her throat go dry, her mind racing. “I put the photo frame away. Seeing your photo every day… I was afraid I’d miss you too much.”

The photo frame had long been tossed into the storage room.

Hearing this, he looked up at her and calmly said, “Miss me? Then why didn’t you call me?”

Zhou Lai: “…”

He smiled! He smiled! He looked at her faintly, the corners of his lips curved, his expression still inscrutable.

Huo Ya continued, “When I called you, it said the number was invalid.”

The number he had given her was written on a slip of paper. She had casually set it aside and had no idea where it ended up.

Besides, how could she possibly call him?

As for the number she had given him… The day after they received their marriage certificate, though the wedding hadn’t taken place, she had already moved into his home along with the marriage license.

She was grumpy when waking up and prone to throwing tantrums if she didn’t get enough sleep. Huo Ya had woken her once, saying he was going to France, and left her his contact information, asking for her number in return.

Annoyed at being woken from her sleep and already disliking him, she had impatiently rattled off a random string of numbers.

She thought that since they both detested each other and he hadn’t wanted this marriage in the first place, he would never call her.

She never expected him to be so thorough in his superficial efforts, enduring the disgust to call her a few times.

Well, this time, she was in the wrong. Cornered by his direct questioning, she had no choice but to spin another lie.

“My phone was stolen before, so I had to replace everything, including the number. With a new phone, I didn’t have your number anymore. Plus, you were so busy abroad, working hard to earn money, I didn’t want to disturb you.” After speaking, she suppressed her provocative gaze and restrained herself from smirking triumphantly.”

Huo Ya didn’t voice his opinion, still watching her with that inscrutable look. But his expression was truly irritating, making her feel extremely uncomfortable!

Fortunately, her years of playing the obedient girl in front of Lin Jing weren’t for nothing, she had long mastered the art to perfection.

The two stared at each other in silence, having remained in the room for over half an hour. Just as she felt she couldn’t stay any longer, Li Jie arrived, standing cheerfully at the doorway.

“Young Master, Young Madam, the soup on the dining table downstairs is cooling. I need to return to the old residence tonight for some matters and will be back tomorrow afternoon.”

Huo Ya nodded to Li Jie and said softly, “Alright, have Xiao Fei drive your back.”

Zhou Lai finally found an opportunity to leave the room. “Li Jie, I’ll see you off. Brother Huo Ya, please carry on with your work. I won’t disturb you.”

Then, with her arm around Li Jie’s shoulder, she walked smiling toward the door.

Work, work, it’d be best if he stayed busy in the room for an hour or two, long enough for her to finish her soup before he came down. She didn’t want to share a table with him and would rather not see him at all.

Her little scheme made her unconsciously curl her lips into a smile. Li Jie, noticing this, thought she was happy about Huo Ya’s return. While descending the stairs, Li Jie covered her mouth and chuckled, “Young Madam seems to be in high spirits tonight. I know it must be because the Young Master is back.”

Zhou Lai nearly missed a step from Li Jie’s comment, almost tumbling down the stairs from the second floor.

She struggled to maintain her smile and stammered, “Li Jie, are you sure you’re not mistaken?”

Li Jie waved her hand. “Don’t be shy. I understand I’ve been through it myself. As someone who’s been there, seeing you two lovebirds so affectionate makes me happier than anyone. Especially when I see you smiling like that it truly looks wonderful.”

Zhou Lai: “…”

Was her smile tonight not uglier than crying? The person she disliked had suddenly returned home, catching her completely off guard. She didn’t even have a single drink tonight!

Li Jie’s “been there” experience clearly didn’t apply to the same situation as hers.

The night was bright, dotted with a few twinkling stars. Now that she had calmed down, her mind, which had been spinning all evening, finally cleared.

Her husband had returned from France. She was the Young Madam of the Huo family, and it was time to properly claim the title she bore.

This sudden realization left her somewhat at a loss, so she sat down on a bench by the entrance. No sooner had she taken a seat than a voice came from behind.

Huo Ya looked at her with a puzzled expression. “What are you doing here?”

Zhou Lai propped her chin on her hand, deliberately blinked, and offered a proper smile. “Tonight, it has been… quite shocking. I’m feeling a bit dizzy.”

“Do you need me to take you to a doctor?”

“No need for the trouble. I’ll just sit here for a while, enjoy the night view, and calm down.”

Surprisingly, as if he were also feeling dizzy, he sat down beside her.

This wasn’t the outcome she wanted. She felt a chill of discomfort and let out an ill-timed sneeze, after which he pulled her back inside.

This somewhat familiar physical contact made her palms sweat with nervousness, yet he remained as composed as ever, expressionlessly guiding her to a chair.

Li Jie’s soup was delicious, fragrant and sweet. Every time she had it, she could finish a large bowl without leaving a drop. Just as she set down her bowl, a pair of hands from across the table pushed another bowl of soup toward her.

“Aren’t you going to drink it?” This was Li Jie’s heartfelt effort, who else would make soup in the middle of the night?

“I’m a bit full and can’t drink it.” Huo Ya held a cup of water, blowing on the steam.

Hmph. Too full for soup, but he could still drink water. Li Jie’s sincere efforts were truly wasted on him. Without hesitation, she accepted the soup, deciding to channel her frustration into her appetite.

“Wan Bao Lu said he wanted to treat me to a welcome dinner, so we had some food at Le Bar.” He took a sip of water, bringing it up as if casually mentioned. It would have been fine if he hadn’t brought it up, but the moment he mentioned it, Zhou Lai felt inexplicably guilty.

Le Bar was the name of the nightclub where they had unexpectedly run into each other that evening.
