Life in a Simulation - Chapter 24
After a spring rain this year, a group of hungry black bears emerged in the forest to the north of Granling. These bears attacked a village belonging to a knight’s fief within the territory, killing more than a dozen livestock and several farmers who had gone to drive them away. The villagers of this village had no choice but to flee their homes and report the situation to Baron Connor.
“There are seven or eight of these black bears. Mobilize all the knights and five hundred able-bodied farmers; we must kill all of these black bears!” In the castle’s council hall, Baron Connor issued the call to arms.
“Dad, I want to go fight the black bears too. Can I go with you?”
Upon hearing that black bears had entered Granling, Baron Connor’s sixteen-year-old son, young Donny, was very excited and eager to join the fight against the bears.
“My dear son Donny, you should stay in the castle and study with Scholar Ellen. The strength of an adult black bear is greater than that of a knight; it’s very dangerous. You shouldn’t go.”
Like Lady Madeline, Baron Connor was very fond of his lively and energetic youngest son, Donny. However, Donny had never been in good health and was not cut out to be a knight. Therefore, the baron had hired a tutor who had once served as a scholar in the royal court of the capital, hoping to cultivate young Donny into a knowledgeable scholar. Although he might not be as prestigious as a lord or a knight, with his knowledge, he could still achieve a decent social standing.
However, the naturally active young Donny simply could not settle down to study those dry books. Every day, he just wanted to ride his horse around outside the castle, visit the farmers working in the fields, hunt by the forest and river to relax, and go to town to see the lovely farmer girls.
Especially, he wanted to go to Little Layne’s house to see his increasingly pretty and tender sister, Alice… But that damned Little Layne always hid his sister in places he could never find, making it so that he could only see Alice once out of every three visits to his house.
“Dad, please let me go with you. I’ll just follow behind and see what the black bears look like. It won’t be dangerous. I’ve been in the castle for almost a week now. If I stay like this any longer, I’ll die of boredom!”
Young Donny pleaded desperately.
“Alright, you can go with us. I’ll assign someone to protect you.”
After Baron Connor nodded in agreement, young Donny jumped up excitedly.
…
In the dense jungle to the north of the territory, a group of farmers armed with spears stretched out in a long line, closely packed together, searching and advancing into the depths of the forest.
Behind these farmers, Baron Connor personally led more than twenty knights and squires on horseback, holding bows and arrows, with their full attention focused on every movement in the dense forest ahead.
They were already very close to the area where the black bears were active. They had found numerous bear tracks and droppings on the ground. If they moved forward a little more, they would be able to see the black bears.
“It is said that an adult black bear can break a fir tree as thick as a bowl with a single powerful swipe, and sit down on a tiger’s back and break it…”
“I have to be careful. If I see a black bear, I must avoid it…”
Zhou Ming, in the crowd, muttered to himself while searching and advancing.
“Roar~!”
A loud noise suddenly came!
A huge black bear, over two meters tall, suddenly burst out from a thicket. It seemed extremely angry that someone had disturbed its beautiful dream. It swung its thick arm and roared, charging towards several trembling farmers.
Whoosh! Whoosh!
Thud! Thud!
Two sharp arrows precisely hit the black bear’s eyes. “Roar~Roar!” The blinded bear let out two earth-shaking roars, wildly swinging its bear arms, like a headless fly, crashing through the trees and breaking several of them along the way.
“What are you waiting for? You useless farmers, quickly stab it with your spears!”
Seeing the farmers around the black bear constantly retreating in fear, Edward roared and lashed out at a farmer with his riding whip.
“Stab it!” “Let’s all go!” “We’ll stab it together!” The farmers mustered their courage, surrounded the black bear, and stabbed it together with their spears.
“Roar~Roar~”
Amidst a series of shrill screams, the blinded black bear, after swatting away several farmers with force, still couldn’t withstand the hundreds of blood holes poked into it by dozens of farmers. After spraying a pool of bear blood on the ground, it finally unwillingly fell to the ground.
“Whoa~Whoa~Whoa~”
“We killed the black bear, we killed a black bear!”
Hundreds of farmers cheered together.
“Roar~Roar~Roar~Roar~Roar~” Suddenly! Several more roars came from the nearby forest.
“Not good, there are black bears here too!”
“There are two of them, and they’re charging at us together!”
“The big black bear has killed Little Romm, we can’t hold them off anymore!”
Five huge black bears, as if they had conspired together, all charged out from the bushes, shaking the weak farmer defense to the verge of collapse.
“Don’t panic, everyone stay calm, hold your ground, and surround and kill the bears!”
Edward was facing this chaotic situation for the first time. He held a longbow with an arrow nocked, but he didn’t know which bear to shoot at.
These five black bears, with their good eyesight and thick skin that didn’t fear the spears, for a moment, these huge and astonishingly strong black bears, killed or injured dozens of farmers.
“Run!”
A cowardly farmer retreated, threw away the spear in his hand, and ran backward.
The other farmers who were struggling to hold on saw this and also threw away their spears, running away together.
“Thud!”
The first farmer to run away had his head chopped off by a longsword. The other farmers, seeing this, all stopped in their tracks.
“Death to the fleeing!”
It was Baron Connor who drew his sword and killed the cowardly farmer. After stopping the other farmers, he raised the longsword in his hand and said to all the knights beside him, “Throw away your longbows, draw the longswords from your waists, and in groups of three, slay the black bears!”
“Yes! My lord!”
The knights all threw away their bows and arrows, drew the longswords from their waists, spurred their warhorses, and charged at the five black bears.
“Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud!”
In just one pass, the five black bears had several alarming wounds on their bodies. One of the black bears even had a bear arm directly chopped off.
“Charge again!”
After turning their horses around, another pass, and the black bears had even more wounds. One of the black bears even had a terrible wound on its neck that went deep into the throat, spraying bear blood more than a meter away. In a short while, this black bear fell straight to the ground.
“Damn it, they’re really human tanks. These knights can directly one-shot the black bears when facing them.”
Zhou Ming was stunned, feeling his blood boiling. If only he could be this powerful…
“Roar~!”
Suddenly, another roar came from nearby. A slightly smaller cub somehow appeared behind the knight squad and charged straight into the group of knight squires in the back.
“Neigh~Neigh~”
The horses under the knight squires had rarely experienced battle and were quickly frightened and scattered by the sudden charge of the black bear. This black bear charged straight at the person the knight squires were closely guarding in the middle—the lord’s son, young Donny.
“Dad, save me!”
Young Donny, whose horse was frightened and threw him off its back, fell to the ground and helplessly watched as the black bear got closer and closer.
“Donny!”
Baron Connor, who saw this, was beside himself with rage. He spurred his warhorse to return and rescue, but with a distance of dozens of meters between them, how could he get there immediately? All he could do was shout in terror, “Donny! Get out of the way!”
“Dad!”
Lying on the grass, with his ankle injured, young Donny could only shout in despair as he saw the black bear getting closer and closer.
“Bang!”
Just as the black bear raised its thick bear arm to smash young Donny into a pulp, a figure suddenly shot over from the side and collided heavily with the black bear. The bear let out a muffled grunt and rolled together with this figure.
“Layne?”
Young Donny, who had just recovered from the shock, immediately recognized the person who had saved him when he saw the figure being pummeled under the black bear.
“Dad, go save Layne!”
After Baron Connor returned, seeing Layne, who was being violently pummeled under the black bear and could only barely defend himself, young Donny said anxiously.
