Life in a Simulation - Chapter 21
Two years later.
One day in June.
Granling Castle, training ground, in front of the armory.
A group of ragged farmers lined up, receiving the weapons distributed to them.
The armory was filled with weapons: rusty maces with wolf teeth, broken short iron swords, short axes with a corner missing, and pointed wooden shields that had been eaten by insects…
The most numerous were the spears made of birch poles with a small iron tip at the top.
“Hey! This is your weapon.”
A knight’s squire handed a spear with a crooked shaft, bent like a shrimp’s back, to Zhou Ming.
Taking the spear, Zhou Ming shook his head and bent down, saying, “Respected sir, this spear is too bent. Could you give me a straighter one?”
“Go pick one yourself. You farmers won’t be of much use anyway,” the squire said lazily. There were hundreds of spears in the armory, and he didn’t bother to help Zhou Ming choose one.
Zhou Ming thanked him and walked into the armory, preparing to select a weapon that felt right in his hands from the vast array of arms.
Knives, guns, swords, halberds, bows, axes, shields, armor, javelins, and spears—every kind of weapon was there.
But…
In this warehouse specifically for collecting all kinds of scrapped and damaged weapons, there was not a single usable or good weapon—except for the hundreds of spears with a small iron tip.
After much consideration, Zhou Ming finally chose a relatively straight and sturdy spear, and also picked a broken short sword—he planned to take it home and sharpen it into a small dagger.
After all, it was his first time on the battlefield, and Zhou Ming didn’t want to leave his sister Alice alone in this dangerous world.
He had to be fully prepared.
The cause of this war was very simple: Baron Connor was hunting in the forest to the west of his territory when he unexpectedly discovered a herd of elk. Just as he was about to hunt them with his knights, Baron Garcia from the neighboring Bertold territory, also brought a group of people and brazenly crossed the border, right in front of Baron Connor, and drove away several fat elk.
“Baron Garcia, you damned thief! Either return the stolen elk tenfold, or we’ll have a fight at the border. I and my knights will make sure to smash your thieving head!”
After sending this declaration of war, a quick reply was received from the other side: gladly accepted.
“Let’s go!”
In front of the castle, after a brief review of the “army” consisting of 11 knights and 200 farmers, Baron Connor had the guard knight raise a black flag with a rose flower on it. According to the agreed time, he set off towards the direction of Baron Garcia’s territory in high spirits.
On the march, Zhou Ming couldn’t help but feel nervous. Baron Garcia also had more than ten knights. If these knights charged at him, he would be in big trouble.
Although he had never stopped exercising these years, this was his first time in a real battle.
“Kid, don’t be nervous. I’ve fought in hundreds of battles with the lord. You’ll be fine after just two fights… Let me tell you, as long as you don’t stand at the front and don’t charge the fastest, you’ll make it home alive.”
In the crowd, a shabby old man with graying hair and half a mouth of black and yellow teeth said to Zhou Ming.
“Old Joey, are you teaching the newbies your running-away experience again?”
“Layne, don’t listen to cowardly Joey. This old guy vanishes every time there’s a battle. Among us fighters, he’s the best at running away.”
“Layne, stay close to me and don’t run around. Don’t be afraid. This kind of battle usually doesn’t go wrong. It’s much easier than fighting bandits,” kind-hearted Uncle O’Neil pulled Zhou Ming to his side and said.
“Thank you, Uncle O’Neil.”
Zhou Ming nodded, but his attention was still on the shabby old man nicknamed “Cowardly Joey.”
Perhaps sensing Zhou Ming’s gaze, Old Joey turned his head and grinned at him, revealing another half of his decayed yellow front tooth.
After walking twenty miles and taking a break, Zhou Ming quietly shifted his seat and sat next to Old Joey, who was lying on a slope in a lazy manner, dozing off intermittently.
He nudged him gently with his elbow and whispered, “Old Joey, can you teach me a few tricks? Teach me how to survive the battlefield unscathed.”
Old Joey opened his eyes a slit, and a gleam of spirit inadvertently burst out from the narrow gap. He yawned widely and said, “Kid, you’ve been training for six or seven years, right? Your physique is not bad. As long as you bring out one-tenth of what you usually practice, you’ll make it back alive.”
What?
Zhou Ming’s face was full of astonishment, and a wave of shock surged in his heart.
How did Old Joey figure it out?
He usually practiced stealthily at night, trying not to make any noise. Even his neighbors didn’t know. How did this old man…
“But kid, with your skills, don’t even think about facing those knights. When you see a knight coming, run as far away as you can. You’re not their match yet.”
Old Joey’s weary words came again.
Zhou Ming turned his head and saw that the other party had already tilted his neck, closed his eyes, and started snoring softly.
This man is truly a master of disguise.
…
At the border of the territory.
A grassland with dense shrubs and open terrain.
Two “armies,” each with about two hundred people, stood more than two hundred meters apart, forming a battle array.
“Charge!”
“Kill!”
With a command, the two armies, which had been holding back, collided fiercely after a short sprint.
Following Uncle O’Neil into the battlefield, Zhou Ming realized that this so-called war was nothing more than farmers from both sides, armed with sticks, spears, and pitchforks, wildly beating each other on a thin battle line.
There was no orderly formation, no fearless killing intent, only shouts of fear and excitement.
As long as you made a blocking gesture and paid attention to dodging the spear tips thrust at you, there wouldn’t be any serious trouble.
At this moment, a slight vibration came from the ground, and the cavalry from the back shouted.
“Not good, the knight is charging!”
“Run! Run quickly!”
“Layne, throw away your weapon and run with me towards the woods!”
“Help! The knight is catching up to me. Someone save me… Ah!” This person let out a scream, and his head flew into the air.
After the two cavalry units charged, the farmers who were entangled quickly threw away their weapons, scattered like birds and beasts, and fled into the nearby woods.
Except for a few unlucky ones who were caught and chopped in half by the knights for running too slowly, the casualty rate on both sides was close to zero.
The outcome of this great battle was still decided by the knights through one-on-one duels. Baron Connor ultimately won the victory with a score of 6:4 and received 200 gold coins in compensation from Baron Garcia…
