In the suburban area, inside a partitioned rental room of less than five square meters.

“Bang!”

Throwing his suit jacket off with a slam, Zhou Ming, with red eyes, lay heavily on the creaky single bed, his head tilted back.

An endless sense of frustration welled up in his heart. He had only worked for three days in this seemingly decent sales job when he offended his superior over a trivial matter and was made an example of, being kicked out of the company without receiving a single cent.

And the suit he had bought just for work, which made him look presentable, had cost him a whopping three hundred yuan!

“Ah!”

Zhou Ming grabbed his hair, letting out an angry roar of unwillingness from within.

Why! Why am I always so unlucky?!

It had been over three years since he graduated from university. No matter what job he took—salesman, security guard, assembly line worker, or bricklayer—no matter how he performed, he would either be fired or quit voluntarily for various reasons. None of his jobs lasted more than three months.

Zhou Ming had also tried to find reasons within himself. Was it because his personality was too cold and aloof? Or because he was not smooth enough in dealing with matters and did not know how to flatter others? Or was it because he was too ugly and thus despised by others?

None of these!

Zhou Ming believed that although his personality was somewhat cold, he was not arrogant. He might not be smooth in handling affairs, but he was not ruthless either. As for his appearance, with a height of 170 cm and ordinary facial features, neither fat nor thin, there was no way he could be considered ugly.

What on earth was the reason that made him struggle so much from the time he graduated from university until now?

Zhou Ming racked his brains but could not figure it out.

“Drip, drip, drip~”

“Are you still troubled by the dissatisfaction of life?”

“Are you still feeling unfair about your poor living conditions?”

“Do you want to change your life?”

“Simulating Life, change your life, starting now!”

A mechanical synthesized voice seemed to ring in his ears.

“Who? Who is speaking?” Zhou Ming was startled and looked around, but all he saw were the mottled gray-white walls.

“Hello, host. Due to the detection of the huge mental fluctuations in your brain, you have luckily become the fortunate user of ‘Simulating Life’ in the Alpha 1078 dimension. After binding this system, you will obtain the qualification of lifelong free experience of ‘Simulating Life’. Would you like to bind it?”

“Wait, I want to ask what exactly is the ‘Simulating Life’ system?” Zhou Ming, both surprised and delighted, asked impatiently.

System, as someone who had read online novels for many years, Zhou Ming was well aware of these two words. Once encountering a system, no matter how unlucky the protagonist was, they could instantly turn things around, trample on all kinds of rich and handsome men, and win the hearts of countless beauties.

He never expected that such a good thing would happen to him today.

“‘Simulating Life’ is a life experience game invented by a super-dimensional civilization. In this game, players can play any role in any timeline and any civilization. Based on the different performances of players in the game, different achievement rewards will be issued, and some of these rewards can be brought back to the real world…” The system explained to Zhou Ming for half an hour.

After listening to the system’s explanation, Zhou Ming, with a face full of ecstasy and his mouth wide open in an “O” shape, had endless ripples in his heart.

“Starting from today, I’m finally going to get rich!”

……

An hour later.

After becoming familiar with the various operations of the system panel, Zhou Ming returned to the main task panel.

There was a long list of draggable task maps on the main task panel. Except for the first task map “The Reversal Life of Zhang Ergou”, the next dozen or so task maps were all displayed in locked gray. Apparently, without breaking through the previous levels, the following levels could not be unlocked.

“How can I unlock the following maps?” Zhou Ming asked the system.

“When the game achievement points obtained by the player in the previous levels exceed the minimum limit for unlocking the next level, the next level will be automatically unlocked.”

“What about the first map ‘The Reversal Life of Zhang Ergou’, how many achievement points are needed?”

“The Reversal Life of Zhang Ergou” is a beginner’s map and can be entered without achievement points.

“How can I get achievement points then?”

Zhou Ming looked at the second task “The Feud of the Lords” on the task panel. After clicking, a prompt popped up that 500 points were needed to unlock the achievement points.

“The acquisition of achievement points includes six aspects, including the player’s personal property, power and status, reputation, life partner, number of offspring and life span. The system will give corresponding achievement point rewards based on the player’s performance in these six aspects.”

“Are you saying that as long as the player has more personal property, higher power and status, greater reputation, more life partners and offspring, and a longer life span, the more achievement points they will get?”

“… It can be understood in this way.”

“What about the conversion ratio? How are property, power, reputation, partners, and life span converted into achievement points?”

“The system has its own conversion formula. As long as the player has an A-level or higher performance in the game, the achievement points obtained will be enough to open the next level.”

After another round of explanations from the system, Zhou Ming understood the gameplay of this game. However, what made him feel annoyed was that in the “Simulating Life” system, the settings related to the golden finger were pitifully few.

“System, the game characters I want to play, don’t even have the most basic settings like photographic memory, super strength, or immunity to all poisons?”

“I’m sorry, in order to maintain the balance of the game, these settings only appear on special game characters. If you want to play these special characters, the host needs to purchase the corresponding character cards.”

Zhou Ming went to the system mall and found that the cheapest “Son of the Landlord’s Steward” character card required 5000 achievement points for exchange, not to mention those “Son of the Great Merchant” and “Son of the King” character cards that cost tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of achievement points. With his account balance showing 0, he could only fantasize about them for now.

“Without the golden finger, system, can I bring my existing memory into the game?”

“Yes, but for the protection of the player’s body, the host can choose two modes to enter the game. One is to inject all the original consciousness into the game character, erase the original personality of the game character, and only retain some basic information; the other is to retain the original personality and memory of the game character, but inject part of the host’s personality and carry skill information… The host can respectively call these two modes ‘Substitution Mode’ and ‘Injection Mode’.”

Both substitution mode and injection mode have their advantages and disadvantages. The advantage of substitution mode is that the player’s sense of immersion is stronger, and the personality and behavior are more free and independent. Injection mode, on the other hand, shows the subtle influence of the player on the game character, which is a bit like “soul symbiosis”. The player is more like the “old man” hidden in the ring in a fantasy novel.

Of the two modes, Zhou Ming, of course, preferred the “substitution mode” with greater freedom. Moreover, he could bring his life experience into the game. The effect was not inferior to the “omniscient” golden finger of the protagonist in some rebirth novels. At the very least, an adult soul with mature thinking, in a completely unfamiliar environment, starting from a lower point and growing through learning, could always avoid many failures and setbacks that had to be experienced.

Thus, on this night, after having a barbecue costing more than eighty yuan at a high-end barbecue stall on a nearby snack street, he returned to the rental house, locked the door from the inside, and with an extremely expectant mood, Zhou Ming entered the first beginner map of “Simulating Life” — “The Reversal Life of Zhang Ergou”.
