Chapter 37: You Want to Kill Me? Then I’ll Kill You! (Part 2)

She had to admit—the cultivation threshold was truly high! No wonder it was a Buddhist sect’s secret art, forbidden to be passed down.

Fortunately, although Yuan Zhao was not at the First Rank, her spiritual power was unique, so she could still practice it.

.

.

Time flew, and several more days passed.

After days of rest, the injuries on Yuan Zhao and the old wolf had mostly healed.

With their self-healing ability, such superficial wounds recovered quickly.

At this moment, an endless stretch of snowy mountains finally entered Yuan Zhao’s sight.

This was the Yulian Mountains.

The Yulian range spanned both the Great Liang and Great Xiao empires (with most of it located within Great Xiao territory). The mountains stretched across the horizon like the backbone of the earth, their snowy peaks piercing the heavens like sharp blades—truly a breathtaking sight.

“We’re almost there. Let’s pick up the pace!” Yuan Zhao patted the horse beneath her, then turned and spoke to the old wolf.

“Awooo~!”

The wolf threw its head back and howled toward the mountains, then raced after Yuan Zhao with excitement.

As they drew closer, the surrounding vegetation grew sparse. By the time they reached the foot of the mountains, everything before their eyes was gravel, rock, cliffs, and snow—only a few dry stalks of grass swayed stubbornly in the cold wind.

Upon reaching the base, Yuan Zhao unloaded the luggage from the two packhorses and strapped everything back onto the old wolf. Then she patted the hindquarters of the three horses, urging them to run.

“Go on. From now on, you’re free.”

The terrain ahead was far too steep for horses.

The three horses neighed sharply, then galloped away across the plains.

Yuan Zhao watched until they disappeared from sight, then prepared to enter the mountains with the old wolf.

But just as she took her first step, a sharp whoosh tore through the air. She dodged instinctively, and an arrow slammed into the ground at her feet, its feathers still trembling.

“Hm?” a surprised voice called out from afar.

Following the voice, Yuan Zhao saw a group of young men and women perched atop a large boulder not far away.

They wore luxurious fur coats, their hair bound with jade crowns, and gem-inlaid headbands. They were richly dressed and clearly of noble birth.

The one in front—a boy of about sixteen or seventeen—held a longbow and was clearly the one who had shot the arrow.

“To think you dodged my Wind-Chasing Arrow!” he said, now looking at Yuan Zhao with renewed interest. “I’ve decided!” He pointed at Yuan Zhao. “The wolf—I want it! And you, I want you too!”

It turned out he had shot earlier because he fancied the old wolf and wanted to claim it as his own.

But he clearly had no idea: with a wolf’s loyalty, even if Yuan Zhao died, the old wolf would never follow someone else.

“Awooooo!” Hearing his words, the old wolf growled in fury.

How dare you speak to my master like that! You must be tired of living!

The boy raised his voice arrogantly: “Little girl! If you agree to become this young master’s servant and hand over that wolf, I’ll spare your life!”

One of his companions laughed. “Hahaha~ Senior Brother Jiang, what do you want with a yellow-haired little brat who hasn’t even grown up properly?”

A girl wrinkled her nose. “Exactly. She’s just a dried-up little bean sprout.”

The boy—Jiang Shixiong—teased back, “You’re a bean sprout yourself, you’ve no right to mock others.”

Yuan Zhao suddenly cut through their chatter.

“You were trying to kill me just now?” she asked Jiang calmly.

Jiang blinked, then burst into laughter. “Yes. But didn’t I say it? If you’re willing to become my servant, I might spare your life.”

He still didn’t realize the danger he was in.

Yuan Zhao spoke again, voice indifferent: “There’s a rule I follow. Those who try to kill me—I will kill them first.”

The dozen youths froze for a second—then erupted into laughter as if they’d heard the funniest joke in the world.

A girl cackled, “Hahaha! Did I hear that right? She said—she said she’s going to kill Senior Brother Jiang?”

A boy added, “Hahaha~ You heard right! What a joke. Little girl’s not big, but her tone sure is!”

Yuan Zhao ignored them all and continued staring directly at Jiang.

“If I refuse you—will you kill me?”

“Of course. No one rejects this young master,” Jiang replied as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

But the next second…

With a flash of cold light.

A blade pierced straight through his chest.

His words stopped abruptly. He lowered his gaze toward the blade in disbelief. He opened his mouth, trying to speak, but no sound came out.

Then he collapsed onto the ground, lifeless.

Silence fell.

The boys and girls who had been laughing only moments before froze in horror.

Only when Yuan Zhao’s voice cut through the stillness did their minds return.

“I said it. If someone wants to kill me—I will definitely kill them.”

“Ahhhhhhhhh!!”

Several of the pampered young novices shrieked in terror, their screams echoing across the snow-covered mountains.

At the same time, another furious roar—one not belonging to any of the youths—shook the air.
