Dear Readers,

Due to a temporary website issue, starting around April 3, all novels started before January 2025 will be temporarily moved to the drafts folder for approximately 3–4 weeks. Unfortunately, this novel is included in that list.

In the meantime, I will be uploading the latest advance chapters to my Ko-fi account for my supporters. Regular updates will resume as soon as the site allows.

Thank you for your patience and support!

Before Sheng Wukun can react, the back seat of the bicycle is empty! Empty!

He curses under his breath and rushes in after the old monk and Hua Yingpo without thinking.

Buddhism and Taoism are two completely different systems. Hua Yingpo can’t understand the seals the old Taoist priest is using at all. She is just an innocent passerby, dragged into the situation with a confused expression.

“Stop! You have killed many lives, and all these sins are on your shoulders. If you do not enter reincarnation, you will suffer in hell for generations.”

The homestead of Mao Feng’s family seems to form a boundary, and a closed barrier appears here. Unless someone steps into this boundary, no sound can be heard from outside.

The old monk forms a lotus seal with his hands and scolds into the air.

Hua Yingpo has no idea what the old monk sees. Forced to step into the boundary, she is overwhelmed by the roaring noise, which sounds like a tsunami crashing in her ears.

A female voice can vaguely be heard. The sharp tone is like the loud, screeching sound of a broken loudspeaker at the brigade headquarters. The roars are full of resentment and unwillingness.

“Wife.” Sheng Wukun also steps in. He pulls Hua Yingpo’s hand and tries to pull her out. But Hua Yingpo uses just a little bit of strength, so Sheng Wukun can’t pull her.

“Wait a minute.”

Though panicked for a moment, Hua Yingpo quickly calms herself. Her psychological quality is high.

The events of the day are truly overwhelming, but now that things have happened, they have to focus on the best course of action.

Now that they have been dragged in by this inexplicable monk, and with Lin Zhong and the others still waiting outside, if they run away, Lin Zhong might suspect them of being frauds.

This old monk looks very powerful, so Hua Yingpo decides to assess his strength first.

Hua Yingpo calms down quickly, and Sheng Wukun also regains his composure.

They don’t need to run immediately, as they still have a trump card. Both Sheng Wukun and Hua Yingpo think about the stack of talisman paper in their arms.

In addition to the talismans, Hua Xiaolian, who is in Hua Yingpo’s arms, is also a valuable asset. Right now, Hua Xiaolian is on alert, staring intently at a specific spot in the air. Whatever the old monk sees, Hua Xiaolian sees as well.

“Bang—”

Mao Feng is thrown heavily to the ground, blood spitting from his mouth.

“Save me! Save me—” He uses his last ounce of strength, struggling to crawl toward the old monk, with a look of relief in his eyes. “Forgive me!”

The old monk doesn’t even glance at Mao Feng, who lies on the ground. He continues making seals and then pushes into the air.

“Show yourself!”

Hua Yingpo has guessed wrong. In fact, the old monk cannot see the evil spirit directly. He can only vaguely feel where the evil energy is most concentrated. Only by drawing the evil spirit out can he determine its exact location.

Once he shouts, the yin energy in the room surges, and a ghostly soul with a shrill, mournful voice appears in front of everyone in the air.

“Yu Caifeng!”

Lin Zhong and the others gasp in shock. Their worldview shatters in that instant. A person who has long been dead appears in front of them as a ghost.

Lin Zhong’s previous theories are now completely confirmed.

Yu Caifeng’s appearance is far more terrifying than the rotting body in the morgue at the crematorium. Lin Zhong and the others can barely bear to look at her for even a second. The terror strikes at their core, consuming all their thoughts.

“Daoist, help me!”

The old monk inhales sharply when he sees the thick blood surrounding the evil spirit. This ghost is far more terrifying than he has imagined. It has likely claimed more than one life.

The old monk isn’t sure he can deal with this ghost on his own, but fortunately, there are two other Taoist companions with strong spiritual energy at the scene. With their help, he is confident they can subdue the evil spirit and take it back for chanting sutras and salvation.

He sees that the man being chased by the evil ghost bears a debt of sin, and the ghost before him seems to have died with great resentment. She kills this man purely for revenge.

It is a pity that she is already dead. Even if her motive is revenge, she has already broken the natural order of Yin and Yang. Every life she takes adds to her sins. Now, the blood on her is already thick with evil energy. If she kills a few more people, it might be impossible for her to enter reincarnation.

The old monk is not the type to blindly destroy ghosts on sight. When he sees this evil spirit, he abandons the idea of letting her soul be free. Instead, he plans to trap the ghost in a magic weapon, chant sutras day and night, and after purging her karma, send her to reincarnation.

The old monk quickly chants a mantra, his hands moving to form seals. He only needs Hua Yingpo and Sheng Wukun to help momentarily restrain the evil ghost until he can open the magic weapon and subdue her.

“Bao’s father?”

Hua Yingpo has been waiting for the old monk to demonstrate his power, but she hasn’t expected him to suddenly lose his temper and burn the ghost.

She exchanges a glance with her husband, discussing whether to throw Hua Xiaolian into the fray and let it play freely.

“Use the talisman first.”

Sheng Wukun places a hand over Hua Xiaolian’s head, then takes out a thick stack of talisman paper. He finds a thunder talisman, tears it open, and throws it at the ghost.

With a loud “Boom—”, several lightning bolts shoot through the air, striking the ghost with such force that it can hardly maintain its shape. Half of its blood and energy dissipates instantly.

Lightning is a magical force that restrains evil spirits. The thunder talismans drawn by Sheng Baobao himself contain enormous spiritual energy, far surpassing ordinary thunder talismans.

The female ghost screams in agony. She has only wanted revenge. But after killing her enemies and losing her target, she will become a ghost that kills anyone she encounters.

Now, Hua Yingpo and Sheng Wukun have easily injured her. Though the ghost has yet to complete her revenge, a trace of consciousness remains. Her first instinct is to flee.

Hua Yingpo steps forward and presses a talisman onto the evil spirit, which immediately becomes frozen in place.

? ? ?

Is it really that easy?

Lin Zhong and the others are filled with confusion. They have expected a fierce battle, one filled with magical might that would darken the sky and dim the sun and moon.

Instead, the old monk performs a series of incomprehensible hand seals, and Lady Hua deals with it in just two spells. It seems Lady Hua is the more powerful one.

Lin Zhong and the others silently become Lady Hua’s fans. Lin Zhong regrets not grabbing a few talismans that day.

At that moment, the old monk finishes his hand seals and easily traps the evil ghost in the lotus magic weapon. The weapon shakes violently, as though the spirit inside is resisting, but eventually, it calms down.

In fact, in a previous life, the old monk has also been here at the same time, but back then, it is just him and his young apprentice. Lin Zhong and the others haven’t been of any help and have only caused the old monk to have to split his attention protecting them.

Although the old monk has successfully subdued Yu Caifeng, he has suffered severe internal injuries during the fight and has to remain in the area for three years to recover.

Because Yu Caifeng doesn’t know the identity of her murderer, she has relied on the karma to track down the person who has killed her. Lin Zhong and the others can’t uncover the true murderer, who has left the area, through Yu Caifeng’s spirit.

It isn’t until several years later that the real murderer is captured in another place. DNA comparison matches him to the case from years ago, and Yu Caifeng’s case is finally closed.

By then, Yu Caifeng has been saved by the old monk and reincarnated.

Since the case can’t be publicly revealed, Jiang Runzhu, an ordinary person, hears a very different version of the story than what has really happened.

“Master, this evil ghost was actually a poor girl. Please show mercy.”

Once the evil ghost is captured, the barrier naturally disappears. Lin Zhong quickly approaches the old monk and explains the full story.

“I see,” the old monk sighs, his voice filled with compassion. “Don’t worry, I will chant sutras to help her transcend. Once the evil karma is cleansed, I will send her into reincarnation.”

The old monk’s words ease everyone’s anxiety. They have feared he will be as stubborn and old-fashioned as Fahai from The Legend of the White Snake, the monk who kills ghosts and demons on sight.

“Master, I have one more request,” Lin Zhong says, bowing deeply. “Yu Caifeng has killed three murderers and severely injured one. I’m not sure if the other murderer is still at large. I would like to ask if you could help capture the remaining murderers through Yu Caifeng.”

“Yes.” The old monk nods gravely, then turns to Hua Yingpo and her husband. “I wonder if you can lend me a talisman to stop the evil spirit.”

The old monk, having some knowledge of such things, recognizes the talisman used to contain evil spirits.

Hua Yingpo and Sheng Wukun exchange a glance, then take a talisman from the thick stack.

The old monk frowns when he sees this. Showing off wealth… this is an obvious display of riches!

The old monk, who laments his own poverty daily, feels his tears swell as he watches them.

“Thank you, fellow Taoist.” Despite his inner feelings, the old monk maintains his composure, accepting the talisman with calm dignity.

“We must hurry. The karmic thread is weakening. The man might escape.” The old monk tucks the talisman into his pocket, though no one knows exactly why he wants it.

“Get in our car.” Lin Zhong pulls out the keys.

Having driven here, he instructs his men to handle the scene and prepares to take the old monk, his apprentice, and Hua Yingpo and her husband to chase down the murderer.

Xiao Ding and the others eagerly help Sheng Wukun load the bicycle into the back of the car, not giving them a chance to refuse.

As for Mao Feng, who has vomited multiple buckets of blood and is in a critical state, he seems forgotten until he completely loses consciousness. Xiao Ding and his crew, after sending Lin Zhong’s group off, walk to the public phone booth, their faces stern, to call the hospital.

Mao Hui can’t sit still after his phone conversation with his distant cousin. Something feels increasingly wrong.

He hasn’t planned to sell his belongings and flee like his cousin. He packs up some valuables and rushes to the long-distance bus station. There is still time to catch the last bus leaving the county.

As Mao Hui is about to enter the bus station, Lin Zhong stops him, pulling out handcuffs to arrest him.

“Ah!” At that moment, the old monk lets out a startled exclamation. A flash of red light appears, and Yu Caifeng, who has been imprisoned in the lotus magic tool, suddenly manifests.

She immediately senses the presence of her enemy and, driven by instinct, charges toward Mao Hui, pouncing on him and sinking her teeth into him.

Fortunately, it is nearly midnight, and the streets are empty. Otherwise, the scene would terrify any passersby.

Yu Caifeng seeks to tear into his flesh, drink his blood, and wreak havoc. The more Mao Hui screams in agony, the thicker the Yin energy surrounding her becomes.

They can only watch as Mao Hui, a once healthy man, is left almost unrecognizable, his skin and flesh utterly torn apart under Yu Caifeng’s relentless attack. He passes out from the pain only to wake up from the agony, again and again.

It isn’t until Mao Hui is on the verge of death that the old monk steps forward. He places the talisman he has borrowed from Hua Yingpo onto Yu Caifeng, sealing her back into the magic weapon.

“I’m old, and my hands are shaking… I accidentally let the ghost escape.” The old monk’s expression is serious, as though he has truly made a mistake.

Hua Yingpo and Sheng Wukun exchange glances, slightly impressed with the old monk.

Mao Feng is sent to the hospital for emergency treatment. While his life is temporarily saved, he will likely face a death sentence.

This era is chaotic in its sentencing. Given that Mao Feng and the others have committed heinous acts, harming women and causing a massive social uproar, they are certain to face severe punishment, including death.

Yu Caifeng has taken her revenge and killed two fewer people. After the old monk saves her soul, she will have a better fate.

“Bao’s father, are we going to see the house tomorrow?” Hua Yingpo asks softly as she sits on the back of the bicycle.

Sheng Wukun: …

No, at least not for now. He is afraid that seeing the house will lead to another unexpected encounter with Lin Zhong.

How are they supposed to retire? It seems like the profession of conman is becoming more and more established…

As the couple thinks of the old monk’s smile and his promise to visit tomorrow, they can’t help but feel a little overwhelmed.

The author’s note:
Baobao: “Mom, let’s buy more houses. Houses will be valuable in the future. Let’s be landlords together.”

Hua Yingpo: “I dare not buy. Houses are very strange. It’s easy to run into the police.”
