Ye Qingxi pushed open the door and returned to his room. He didn’t go back to Mu Shaowu’s room, but instead to the one Mu Feng had originally prepared for him. He sat there alone. He hadn’t expected Mu Feng to say those things to him. Ye Qingxi’s instinct told him, it shouldn’t be like this. Qin Cheng was Mu Feng’s biological grandson. Of course Mu Feng should love Qin Cheng the most. That would be reasonable. That would be right. That would be fair.

But at the same time, he could clearly feel the warmth and emotion that rose within him after hearing those words. He was happy, because of what Mu Feng had said. That happiness was hidden, buried deep, like it knew it wasn’t supposed to exist, tiptoeing around as if afraid to be discovered.

But it came anyway. Out of his control. Completely uninvited.

This was something Ye Qingxi had never experienced before.

No one had ever told Ye Qingxi so directly, so seriously, so solemnly, that they would love him most, that they would always love him most. Not even his own biological parents had said that.

But now, Mu Feng had.

And not only had he said it, he had meant it. He had proven it through his actions.

From the moment Ye Qingxi entered the Mu family, Mu Feng had always been gentle with him, always full of care.

Like this room. Even if Mu Feng hadn’t realized that its original décor wasn’t quite right for a 5-year-old child, that hadn’t stopped him. He simply knew Ye Qingxi needed a room. So he gave him the one closest to Mu Shaowu, the man who would become his future father.

Clumsy, plain, sincere.

He wanted Ye Qingxi to live happily in the Mu family. He wanted him to grow up healthy and joyful.

He wanted him to see this place as his home. He wanted him to see himself as Ye Qingxi’s real grandfather. Ye Qingxi had once had a home, but he had never had memories of a grandfather. He didn’t know if all grandfathers loved their grandsons this way. But he could clearly feel Mu Feng’s love for him. A love that surpassed what his own parents had ever given him, even when added together.

He loved him even more than Ye Qingxi had imagined.

For the first time, he felt such a powerful, overwhelming love, like a rising tide, pouring into the long-dried riverbed of his life, like blazing sunlight, scorching away all the damp and shadow of his past.

So much so that the heart he thought had long since withered, now seemed to be growing a single vine through a crack, one that dared to hope it might one day bloom brightly.

Ye Qingxi pinched his arm. It hurt. He could feel it. This wasn’t a dream. The world he was living in was real. Mu Feng was real. And the love he felt, was real too.

He lifted a hand to cover his eyes and quietly began to cry. He didn’t cry for long. Quickly wiping away his tears, he went to the bathroom and splashed cold water on his face, trying to make it less obvious he had cried.

Only then did he leave his room and return next door, to Mu Shaowu’s bedroom. Mu Shaowu was on the phone with his agent.

Ye Qingxi didn’t interrupt him. He quietly took out his schoolbooks and began doing his homework.

Not long after, Mu Shaowu finished the call and walked over to him.

Curious, he asked, “What did your grandpa say to you?”

Ye Qingxi felt a little embarrassed to answer, so he simply said, “Nothing much.”

“If it’s nothing much, then why couldn’t I hear it?”

Ye Qingxi shook his head, looking completely innocent, “You’ll have to ask Grandpa about that.”

Mu Shaowu glanced at his slightly red eyes and reached out to touch them, “You’ve been crying?”

Ye Qingxi, “.…”

He had no choice but to admit, “Just a little bit.”

Now Mu Shaowu was even more confused, “What in the world did Grandpa say to you that made you cry?”

That didn’t make sense! The old man clearly liked Ye Qingxi very much!

There was no way he would scold him. So why had he cried?!

Ye Qingxi looked at Mu Shaowu’s worried expression and had no choice but to confess, “It’s nothing… Grandpa just said he liked me, so I got a little emotional.”

His words weren’t exactly smooth, there was a touch of shyness to them. And the moment he finished speaking, he quickly turned his head and focused on his book.

Mu Shaowu, “?????”

He reached over and turned Ye Qingxi’s little face back toward him, “Then how come when I told you I liked you, you weren’t moved?”

Ye Qingxi, “?????”

Seriously?! You’re really going to compare yourself to your own father? Your competitive streak is too much!

Mu Shaowu looked utterly wronged, eyes full of pitiful grievance, “You’re biased! Ye Qingxi, you’re unfair! You like your grandpa more than you like me!”

Ye Qingxi, “……”

Oh great. Now he’s acting again. Fine. You want tears? I’ll give you tears.

Ye Qingxi’s eyes immediately turned red, brimming with tears, “I’m not! I like both of you, I’m not playing favorites!”

As he spoke, his tears started falling, “I was moved! Daddy’s accusing me unfairly!”

And the next second, Ye Qingxi burst into loud, dramatic sobs.

Moved? Dare I even move?!

Mu Shaowu, “!!!!!!!”

He panicked and immediately pulled Ye Qingxi into his arms, “Don’t, don’t, don’t—don’t cry, baby, I was wrong, I was wrong! Baby, you’re not biased at all—you’re the fairest! Please don’t cry!”

Flustered, he grabbed tissues and frantically wiped the tears off Ye Qingxi’s face.

He’d only teased him because he’d just cried, and he wanted to lift his mood a little. Who could’ve guessed he’d actually make the kid cry again? How did this turn into such a disaster?!

Mu Shaowu felt like he deserved a thousand deaths.

“I’m sorry, I’m sorry—baby, will you forgive me?” he pleaded softly, still carefully wiping his tears.

Ye Qingxi let out a smug little laugh in his heart.

That’s it? And you dare try to out-act me? What’s the big deal? Acting’s what he does, he’s not scared of anyone.

Ye Qingxi sniffled pitifully, eyes lowered, his expression the very picture of wronged innocence.

Mu Shaowu, “……”

He seriously wanted to slap himself twice on the spot.

“Do you want some fried chicken? Daddy will buy it for you, right now.”

And honestly, Ye Qingxi kind of did.

But he’d just eaten dinner, so he hesitated, “I can’t finish it.”

“No problem. Whatever you don’t eat, I’ll finish.”

“I also want cola.”

“Drink, drink. There’s still some at home.”

“And sweet potato balls.”

“Not a problem.”

“Dried sweet potato.”

“Easy.”

Ye Qingxi was finally satisfied, “Daddy, you’re the best.”

Mu Shaowu instantly melted into a puddle of soft-hearted mush. What kind of angel child is this? He was the one who made him cry, and not only did Xiao Xi not blame him, he praised him!

Mu Shaowu couldn’t help but hug him tightly, rubbing his face against Ye Qingxi’s soft, tender little cheek, “Xiao Xi is the best. Xiao Xi is the best baby in the whole wide world.”

Ye Qingxi, …Dad, you’re hugging a bit tight, okay?

After fulfilling Mu Shaowu’s “I want to be emotionally moved” quota and securing that evening’s supper, Ye Qingxi’s mood lightened again.

So out of the kindness of his heart, he kindly told his bargain-bin dad, “Daddy, I didn’t feel wronged. I was just teasing you just now.”

But Mu Shaowu didn’t believe him.

Yeah right, he thought. My son’s not some award-winning actor. What, he can cry on command now? Tears falling like pearls off a broken string? He must be saying that just to make him feel better. What a good kid.

Mu Shaowu’s heart melted all over again. His son loved him so much, he even knew how to comfort him!

He definitely super loved his daddy, too!

“Baby, you’re the sweetest,” Mu Shaowu said, deeply moved.

Ye Qingxi, …Great. Now he’s the one getting emotional.

Ye Qingxi let out a soft laugh.

Alright then, he thought. He’d already told the truth. If his dad didn’t believe him, what could he do? Might as well let the beautiful misunderstanding continue, so this cheap dad of his could feel a little more touched.

Ye Qingxi turned his head and resumed doing his homework. Seeing the small smile tug at his lips, Mu Shaowu couldn’t help but smile, too. After all, his whole intention had been to make Ye Qingxi happy, that’s why he’d teased him in the first place.

Now that Ye Qingxi was smiling, his goal was achieved. Mu Shaowu happily patted his head, watching him work on his school assignments.

“Oh right, Dad,” Ye Qingxi suddenly turned around, remembering something, “do you have any free time coming up? Brother Qin Cheng asked me to hang out.”

“Where to?”

“The water park.”

“Sure,” Mu Shaowu agreed, “But not tomorrow and Sunday’s the family banquet. How about next Sunday?”

“Then can you ask Uncle if he’s free next Sunday?”

“Okay,” Mu Shaowu replied as he pulled out his phone and called Mu Zheng.

Mu Zheng didn’t answer, but two minutes later, he appeared outside the bedroom.

“What is it?”

“Are you free next Sunday? Xiao Cheng invited Xiao Xi to go to the water park. Just so happens, I’m free that day too.”

Mu Zheng was surprised that Qin Cheng had taken the initiative to invite Ye Qingxi. He had thought this was supposed to be some exclusive father-son bonding time.

But he already liked Ye Qingxi, and he hoped that Qin Cheng would build the same kind of close relationship with his own younger brother that he himself had with his siblings.

So he didn’t hesitate, “Sure.”

“Then I’ll make the arrangements,” Mu Shaowu said, “I’ll call you ahead of time.”

“Alright.” Mu Zheng had no objections.

After finishing the conversation about the water park, Mu Zheng made sure to personally say goodbye to Ye Qingxi before leaving.

Just before stepping out, as usual, he went to bid farewell to Mu Feng.

Mu Feng looked at him and said, “Let’s hold off on changing Xiao Cheng’s surname for now.”

Just now, when Ye Qingxi had buried his head in his arms, Mu Feng had felt the faintest trace of dampness.

He was still just a child. Even if he seemed indifferent on the surface, even if he said aloud, “You can love Brother Qin Cheng more,” deep down, he was still afraid—afraid that Mu Feng might not love him anymore.

And really, in this world he only had him. Mu Feng didn’t want Ye Qingxi overthinking things. So, he decided to let everything stay just as it was.

“Alright,” Mu Zheng agreed.

Mu Feng said a few more words to him before finally letting him go.

He walked back to his bedside and looked at the little, short-sleeved shirt lying on the bed.

In all these years, it was the first time someone had given him something like this.

Mu Feng picked it up, fingers brushing over the soft fabric, and it felt, somehow, like he was touching the softness of Ye Qingxi’s heart.

The fried chicken Mu Shaowu had ordered arrived a little later.

He called over Mu Shaoting, and the three of them—he, Ye Qingxi, and his sister—shared a late-night meal together.

Just after they’d finished eating, Mu Shaoyan came back. The moment Mu Shaoting saw him, her eyes lit up. She waved him over excitedly and couldn’t wait to drag him into her bedroom to share today’s major gossip.

Mu Shaoyan, “!!!!!!”

“So Xiao Cheng is Big Brother’s biological son?!” Mu Shaoyan’s pupils practically quaked.

“Isn’t it wild?” Mu Shaoting said as she cracked sunflower seeds, “I was even more shocked than you when I found out!”

“How’s Dad… handling it?”

“He’s… managing,” Mu Shaoting replied, “After all, it’s better for Xiao Cheng to be Big Brother’s son than to be someone else’s.”

That was true. Mu Shaoyan nodded. Their dad was hardly some warm-hearted saint. Raising his own grandson, or a friend’s grandson, he’d accept that. But raising some random guy’s son? The fact their dad would even look at that kid would’ve already been a miracle for Big Brother’s sake.

“If I’d known, I would’ve come back earlier,” Mu Shaoyan said, full of regret. A bombshell like this, and I missed the live version? Total rookie mistake!

“So where were you, anyway? Why’d you get back so late?”

“Obviously out doing heroic deeds,” Mu Shaoyan said as he sat up, “Now—got to go.”

“Mu Shaoyan, this is your final year of high school, you better focus. Don’t just go around fighting all the time. You need to study too.”

“Yeah, yeah, I got it,” Mu Shaoyan replied absentmindedly, brushing her off as he walked out of Mu Shaoting’s room.

That very night, Mu Feng sent out a messaGe to the whole family, “Come to the old house for dinner this Sunday.”

The Mu family, “?????”

“Didn’t we just have a family dinner recently? Why another one?”

“Yeah, what happened this time?”

“No clue. Could it be something to do with Ye Qingxi again?”

“Can’t be, right? Last time he already gave him shares. What else is there to give?”

“So confusing. The old man’s really been busy lately.”

And so, the whole family started digging around for information again. But this time, no matter how much they asked, they came up empty-handed. Mainly because this matter was hard to talk about. To explain it, you’d have to bring up what happened all those years ago.

Mu Shaoting was willing to share it with Mu Shaoyan because he was her real younger brother. But as for the others? She wasn’t about to hand them gossip ammo so they could sit around and judge her brother.

Mu Shaoyan shared the same attitude. To anyone who asked, his answer was always, “You’ll find out soon enough.”

And so, right up until Sunday when they arrived at the Mu family’s old estate, the rest of the Mu family still had no idea what this family dinner was actually about.

Though they didn’t know what the occasion was, proper etiquette still had to be observed. So everyone came prepared with gifts, intended for Mu Feng, of course.

But Mu Feng didn’t accept them. Instead, he told them to give the gifts to Qin Cheng.

Everyone was startled. Could today’s gathering be about Qin Cheng?

They quickly racked their brains, trying to recall any interactions they’d had with Qin Cheng and realized… there really hadn’t been any.

After all, Qin Cheng had only joined the Mu family a year ago. During that year, most of them hadn’t visited the old Mu estate often, and Qin Cheng hadn’t come much either. Everyone stayed in their own homes, so there’d been barely any opportunity to meet.

And in the few times they had met, since Qin Cheng was Mu Zheng’s stepson, well, out of respect for Mu Feng, no one had been dumb enough to make things difficult for the old man’s son’s stepson. That would’ve been asking for death.

As for Mu Feng’s temperament? If outsiders didn’t know, the Mu family certainly did.

He was the textbook definition of a double standard. He might treat Qin Cheng with cold indifference because the boy wasn’t Mu Zheng’s biological son. But no one else was allowed to. If someone else acted that way, Mu Feng would take it as an insult, like they were looking down on his son.

So whenever they met Qin Cheng, everyone was as polite and courteous as required. Too polite, even. But there was no other choice. After all, he wasn’t a biological child of the family. He’d never be the Mu family’s heir, so there was really no need to go overboard with enthusiasm.

But then why had the old man suddenly… changed his attitude today?

Everyone was puzzled but kept it to themselves, politely stepping forward to present their gifts to Qin Cheng.

Qin Cheng glanced up at Mu Zheng. Seeing him nod, he accepted the gifts and said, “Thank you.”

Once the gifts were handed over, it was just about time for dinner. Everyone filed into the dining room designated for family banquets.

Ye Qingxi had assumed that this time, Qin Cheng would be seated beside Mu Feng.

He was just about to sit next to Mu Shaowu when he heard Mu Feng’s calm voice, “Xiao Xi, come here.”

Ye Qingxi, ???? Me?

Was he sure? Not Qin Cheng?

Puzzled, Ye Qingxi walked over and sat down beside Mu Feng. He glanced around the table and, just like last time, offered everyone a polite smile.

Mu Feng, meanwhile, reached out and patted his head.

On his wrist, he still wore the prayer bead bracelet from Grandpa Pei that Ye Qingxi had given him—its vivid, translucent green gleaming distinctly in the light.

Mu Kun glanced over and chuckled, “Big brother, you’ve started wearing prayer beads now?”

“No,” Mu Feng replied, pulling his hand back and turning to look at him.

“Then what’s that on your wrist?”

“Xiao Xi won it,” Mu Feng said, lowering his gaze to glance at it, his tone unusually gentle, “He played a game with Pei Ying’s grandson and won this new set of beads that Pei Ying just bought. He gave it to me.”

“Oh? Then Xiao Xi’s really filial.”

“Of course Xiao Xi is filial. Just the other day, he even gave me a short-sleeved shirt.”

Hearing that, the rest of the family naturally followed Mu Feng’s lead and began praising Ye Qingxi.

Ye Qingxi listened but couldn’t help feeling like he was stealing the spotlight. Wasn’t today supposed to be about Qin Cheng? Why is it suddenly all about me again? That doesn’t feel right…

He turned to glance at Qin Cheng, only to find Qin Cheng was already looking at him. When their eyes met, Qin Cheng even gave him a bright smile.

Ye Qingxi, “……”

A subtle wave of guilt crept over him. He couldn’t help but feel like he’d unintentionally upstaged the real main character.

He lowered his head, silently hoping, Please start serving the food. Once the dishes are up, we can eat, and then Grandpa should finally get to the main event.

As usual, the chefs were from the national banquet team. As usual, the spread was lavish. Only after the final dish was placed on the table did Mu Feng speak, slow and unhurried.

“Today, I asked you all here because there’s something I need to announce.”

Everyone nodded, of course there was something to announce. When had there ever been a family gathering without something going on? If there wasn’t anything, old man Mu would probably prefer to see them all year round via the family WeChat group only.

“Xiao Cheng is Mu Zheng’s son, so…” Mu Feng pulled out a document folder and handed it toward Qin Cheng, “This is a gift from Grandpa—1% of the group’s shares.”

As Qin Cheng heard those words, he couldn’t help but think back to the last time he’d come here for dinner, when Grandpa had given Ye Qingxi the exact same gift. But at his age, he didn’t yet understand what “shares” really meant. So he had no concept of how valuable this gift was—nor what it signified.

He just turned to look at Mu Zheng, silently asking with his eyes whether he should accept it.

Mu Zheng nodded, “Take it.”

Only then did Qin Cheng reach out and take the folder, “Thank you, Grandpa.”

“No need to be so polite,” Mu Feng replied, his tone gentle.

After speaking, he turned to look at everyone else, completely unbothered by the emotional tidal wave he’d just stirred up and said calmly, “Let’s eat.”

Then he casually picked up a shrimp ball from the table and placed it into Ye Qingxi’s bowl.

The rest of the Mu family, “?????”

The relatives all looked at each other, completely baffled by this series of one-two punches.

Qin Cheng is Mu Zheng’s son? What the hell? The old man’s not joking, is he? But then again… this was Mu Feng. He never joked. And besides, words might be casually thrown around but shares definitely weren’t.

Qin Cheng had been in the Mu family for a year. If Mu Feng had wanted to give him shares, he could’ve done so at any time. But he never did. Which meant he never intended to.

And if he suddenly changed his mind and gave them now, then something must have happened.

Something like… Qin Cheng turning out to be Mu Zheng’s biological son. But if that were the case… how could the old man not have known earlier?

Everyone was suddenly full of questions.

Mu Kun couldn’t hold back and asked, “Big brother, what’s going on?”

“It’s nothing,” Mu Feng replied blandly, “Xiao Cheng is Mu Zheng’s son. The couple had a misunderstanding before, and now it’s cleared up. Not a big deal. Let’s eat.”

Hearing Mu Feng’s tone, clearly uninterested in elaborating, everyone wisely chose not to press the matter. But as they ate, they couldn’t help sneaking glances at Qin Cheng.

Before, he was just a stepson. Now, he’s the biological son. Mu Zheng’s real son. Mu Feng’s real grandson. That means… there’s a good chance Qin Cheng might become the next head of the Mu family. And just like that, the way everyone looked at him subtly shifted. Truly, fortunes rise and fall.

It hadn’t even taken 30 years. Not even 30 days. In barely a couple of weeks, the old man’s favorite had shifted from Ye Qingxi to—Wait.

Everyone’s eyes slowly turned to Ye Qingxi, who was sitting beside Mu Feng, while Mu Feng continued gently placing food into his bowl.

This….

The Mu family members were once again thrown into confusion.

Logically speaking, a biological grandson should be more cherished and prioritized than one who wasn’t.

But right now, the one sitting next to the old man was Ye Qingxi. The one he was serving food to was also Ye Qingxi. Even that 1% in company shares, Ye Qingxi had received his own share first.

And the way Mu Feng looked at Ye Qingxi—gentle, doting… If they hadn’t known him all their lives, they might’ve mistaken him for a kind old grandpa. The Mu family didn’t understand.

What was going on here? Did this mean that, even compared to Qin Cheng, Mu Feng still cared more about the grandson of his old friend?

It… didn’t seem entirely impossible.

After all, Mu Feng had always been strong-willed and unconventional since he was young. He never followed the rules. Nothing he did would be too surprising. Just look, he was still wearing the prayer beads Ye Qingxi had given him. The Mu family couldn’t figure him out, so they gave up trying.

In any case, it was clear Ye Qingxi hadn’t fallen out of favor. He was still the old man’s favorite. And that meant one thing. They would keep treating him well. As for Qin Cheng, he was Mu Feng’s biological grandson and Mu Zheng’s own son. Who among them dared not take him seriously? These two children, both were not to be provoked, nor overlooked.

With that thought in mind, the Mu family members didn’t say much else. They lowered their heads and quietly ate their meal.

Ye Qingxi was eating, too.

But today, Mu Feng had put a lot more food into his bowl than usual. Add to that the dishes Mu Shaowu kept serving him as well, and despite eating steadily, his bowl never seemed to empty.

Strange… Ye Qingxi thought. Normally, Grandpa doesn’t give me this much.

Usually, Mu Feng would serve him just once, at the start of the meal, with the first chopsticks of the evening, and that would be it.

But today… he had served him again and again. Why?

Ye Qingxi pondered as he chewed, then suddenly froze.

He looked down the long dining table, at the Mu family members chatting and eating merrily.  In that moment, he understood everything.

He was doing it on purpose. On purpose—he was doing it all on purpose, for everyone to see.

Just like how earlier, he’d deliberately mentioned the matching family shirt Ye Qingxi gave him.

In this moment, Ye Qingxi finally understood what Mu Feng had told him the night before, “As you grow older, you’ll see, Grandpa didn’t lie to you. Grandpa would never lie about something like this. Grandpa will love you more, and everyone will know it.”

He had chosen this moment, when the room was full, when the Mu family’s relatives were all present, to serve him again and again, to talk about him, to bring up things he had given him…

All to publicly reaffirm his position.

All to make it known to everyone at the table. Even now, with a newly acknowledged biological grandson, he still favors him, perhaps even more.

That’s why he let him sit at his side. That’s why he wore the prayer beads he’d gifted him. That’s why he kept putting food into his bowl. Mu Feng was using his actions to send a message, to make it undeniably clear. Ye Qingxi still held his trump card in this family.

Once again, Ye Qingxi felt the scorching, overwhelming love pouring from Mu Feng. Like the noonday sun, blazing down with no filter, no restraint, bathing him in light.

How had he earned this? What had he done to deserve it?

He wasn’t even worried. Worried that someday Ye Qingxi would grow used to all this. Worried that he might become arrogant from being spoiled. That he might one day truly mistake himself for the heir to the Mu family.

Ye Qingxi’s nose stung.

He picked up a piece of braised pork and gently placed it into Mu Feng’s bowl.

Mu Feng smiled at him, just like he had the night before. That same warmth, tolerance, and deep affection glowed in his eyes.

And in that moment, the vine that had quietly sprouted in Ye Qingxi’s heart days ago. It began to grow wildly. Drawing in the nourishment of Mu Feng’s love, climbing, stretching, daring to rise. His yearning for family was no longer abstract.

It had a shape now. A face. It was Mu Feng’s face.

He thought, I want to be with Grandpa forever. I never want to leave him.

His grandfather was the best in the world. He liked his grandfather. He loved his grandfather.

Before 18, Ye Qingxi had no feelings about the word Grandpa. It meant nothing to him. A discarded, irrelevant word in his vocabulary. A blank space in his life.

But now—now Ye Qingxi could feel the heat of that word. “Grandpa” had become the most important word in his life.

He would rather die again than lose it.
