The tribe chief saw Kos, Feng, and the others return with an unfamiliar tool carrying giant watermelons. He asked Lei Lu, “What is this? How can it hold so much?”

Before Lei Lu could answer, a frightened and beaten Kos rushed over to the tribe chief, rubbing his leg as he said, “Uncle Tribe Chief, let me answer! This is something Xiao Xiao told us to make. It’s really useful. If we use this to carry our prey, we can haul back more than if we carried it on our backs. That means we can catch so much more!”

As Kos spoke, he continued to rub against the tribe chief, who allowed it. This was a way for males to express intimacy and friendliness. Especially since the tribe chief had watched Lei Lu, Kos, Feng, and the others grow up and was good friends with their fathers, making their relationship quite close.

The tribe chief patted Kos’s head and said, “Yes, but how can this plant be turned into salt?” He then looked at Xiao Xiao in Lei Lu’s arms.

Hearing the tribe chief’s question, Wu Xiaoyin responded, “I’ve never seen plants used to make salt before, but where I lived, we could make sugar from plants, similar to the honey produced in large amounts by the Great Bear Tribe, though a bit different. It was also very tasty and could serve as a seasoning. We could try using that sugar-making method as a reference.”

The tribe chief listened and found Xiao Xiao’s idea promising. They had never tried it before, so he decided to have the collected giant watermelons placed at Lei Lu’s cave entrance and instructed everyone else to disperse.

Lei Lu carried Xiao Xiao and returned home with the cart. He quickly prepared lunch. They had hunted two giant rabbits on the way back. After feeding his little Xiao Xiao, Lei Lu cuddled him for a nap. After all, Xiao Xiao had woken up early and walked a long way, so he must be extremely tired.

In truth, Wu Xiaoyin wasn’t very tired because Lei Lu had carried him to and from the tribe. He hadn’t helped much while picking the giant watermelons. However, seeing Lei Lu’s concern for his health made him reluctant to argue. He comfortably snuggled in Lei Lu’s arms for a good nap.

After waking up, Wu Xiaoyin instructed Lei Lu to make a large stone pot. There was no way, the stone pot at the house was only suitable for stewing soup. This made Wu Xiaoyin realize they needed a dedicated workspace, especially if they would be cooking salt in large quantities in the future. They would definitely need a proper place to store those huge stone pots.

After sharing this idea with Lei Lu, Lei Lu remembered it and thought he would mention it to Uncle Kun later. His and Xiao Xiao’s home should not be left with scents of irrelevant beastmen, considering how important territory is to the beastmen!

Wu Xiaoyin instructed Lei Lu to remove the seeds from the giant watermelons and then put the flesh into the stone pot. He discovered that when heated, the watermelon pulp melted down. After simmering, the moisture evaporated, leaving behind green salt. After tasting it, Wu Xiaoyin found that this green watermelon salt had a high salt content and a fruity aroma. It was much better than the coarse salt from the Great Snake Tribe. Wu Xiaoyin felt very satisfied.

One giant watermelon could produce about 50 kilograms of salt, which was too heavy for Wu Xiaoyin to handle. Lei Lu directly made a stone barrel by drilling a hole in a stone, perfectly sized to hold the salt from one giant watermelon. With a total of 50 giant watermelons, they finished the task in just one afternoon.

If a giant watermelon wasn’t used for preserving the animal meat, they could easily supply a family of three for five years. Wu Xiaoyin had Lei Lu happily carry the good news to the tribe chief. They would no longer be dependent on the Great Snake Tribe for salt!
