As Wu Xiaoyin paced around the room, Lei Lu returned with a cleaned giant bull beast. Wu Xiaoyin welcomed him and directed him to place the giant bull beast in the kitchen, where it would be prepped later. Lunch was already ready, just waiting for Lei Lu to return so they could eat together. The lunch included potato stew with meat, honey-roasted meat, cold mixed vegetables, and stir-fried bamboo shoots. After eating, Wu Xiaoyin felt drowsy. Sure enough, people feel sleepy in spring, tired in autumn, and sleepy again in summer!

However, remembering the clay he needed brought him back to alertness. He shook his head to clear his thoughts. Lei Lu on the side noticed his struggle and gently supported Xiao Xiao’s head. He said, “Why don’t you take a nap first before looking for clay? According to the description you said last time, clay is usually found by rivers, lakes, or swamps. This narrows our search by a lot. It happens that I have no plans this afternoon. After we rest, we can start looking near the river. No need to rush!”

Lei Lu tried to comfort Xiao Xiao in every possible way. After all, Xiao Xiao had been anxious about the upcoming drought in the hot season, hunger in the cold season, and the severe cold with it. Although the recent focus on building stone houses and heated beds and storing wild vegetables and fruits had temporarily distracted Xiao Xiao, the worry was creeping back now that he had free time. Ho hoped to shift Xiao Xiao’s attention to making pottery jars.

Listening to Lei Lu’s comforting words and seeing the concern in his eyes, Wu Xiaoyin nodded and let him carry him to the bedroom for a nap. Nestled in Lei Lu’s embrace, he felt a sense of calm. No matter how uncertain the future seemed, at least Lei Lu would always be by his side.

After a refreshing nap, Wu Xiaoyin woke up and noticed that the sun was setting. He urged Lei Lu to take him to the riverbank to see if they could find suitable soil for making pottery jars.

Lei Lu walked towards the river with Xiao Xiao in his arms. He kept reassuring him, “Xiao Xiao, even if we can’t find the clay you mentioned by this river, we have others to check. If those don’t work, we can look at lakes. We will find it, so there’s no need to rush, right? Don’t worry.”

Wu Xiaoyin understood that Lei Lu was trying to comfort him. He could feel the feeling of being cared. He leaned closer and rubbed his cheek against Lei Lu’s. “I know, I’m not anxious. Even if we can’t find clay, we can use stone jars and stone vats instead. But finding clay would be best!”

Lei Lu kissed Xiao Xiao’s face. “We will definitely find it. You know, the river is long. While the summer heats up, the water level hasn’t gone down, it seems to be rising. The places we beastmen bathe in used to reach our waists, and now they’re almost to our chests. So there’s a chance we won’t face a water shortage. Right, Xiao Xiao?”

However, Wu Xiaoyin didn’t feel reassured by Lei Lu’s words. Instead, he frowned and looked at the distant mountains and the rushing river. He thought about how the situation might be the opposite of what he hoped, the snow-covered mountains in the north!

The snow-covered mountains in north that never melt all year round could melt due to the rising temperature in hot season. The snow water would then flow along the rivers from north to south, creating a scenario where both floods and drought could happen. If animal carcasses or rotting fruits were swept downstream, the water quality could deteriorate further. The situation would then get worse. At least during the cold season, there was no need to worry about the water resources. The snow that fell in cold season provided enough water for all the tribe’s needs.

Realizing this, Wu Xiaoyin quickly shared his thoughts with Lei Lu. As expected, upon hearing the potential problems, Lei Lu said, “Xiao Xiao, let’s first look for clay and then stop by the tribe chief’s home on our way back to see if similar situations have occurred before.”

Wu Xiaoyin added, “If we find clay by the river, we can dig it up while also widening the riverbank to prevent erosion. Otherwise, if the river flowing through the tribe floods, it could wash away our stone houses and all our food. That would be disastrous!”

Lei Lu nodded firmly and assured him, “You can trust me, Xiao Xiao. I won’t let you out of my sight, and I’ll handle any unexpected situations.”

“Of course I know that.” Wu Xiaoyin never doubted Lei Lu’s protection when it came to him.

Soon, they arrived at the northern river. Wu Xiaoyin asked Lei Lu to dig up some soil from the riverbank to see if it was suitable for pottery. Luckily, the banks were rich with clay that had accumulated over many years. This discovery was like killing two birds with one stone!

Overjoyed, Wu Xiaoyin kissed Lei Lu on the forehead hard, making a loud “smack” sound that showed just how excited he was.

Not only had they solved the problem of raw materials for creating pottery, but they also solved some of the danger by possible floods. Wu Xiaoyin and Lei Lu happily returned to share the good news with the tribe chief and the priest. As they walked, Wu Xiaoyin spotted large fishes surfacing and bubbling in the water occasionally, thinking that these too could serve as a food source, and an abundant one at that!
