“Why is that?”

“My friend Xiao Pang said that only Dad and Mom can stay with us forever. I don’t want you to leave me. I want you both to be together.”

Although Sheng Fei wasn’t very kind to the five children before, they had all noticed her recent efforts. Even Lu Ting was moved, let alone the children. Thus, Lu Xiaowu’s wish was simple. He wanted his uncle to be his dad and marry his mom so that he could always be with them.

They could be together as a family.

He had heard about Mingming, whose parents divorced. His mother ran off with a man from the big city, and his father remarried a stepmother who treated Mingming poorly. Eventually, something bad happened to his father, and the stepmother fled with the family’s money, leaving Mingming with only his grandmother. If his parents hadn’t divorced, maybe they wouldn’t have faced such hardships.

Lu Ting rubbed Lu Xiaowu’s head and said, “I won’t leave you.”

Lu Xiaowu hugged Lu Ting’s leg tightly and refused to let go. “Uncle, marry mom. As long as you marry her, she won’t leave.”

Lu Ting was feeling troubled lately.

Seeing Sheng Fei busy in the kitchen, he went to help her chop vegetables. The heavy rain outside had turned into a light drizzle, and it seemed the weather would clear up soon. However, he heard from the village loudspeakers and broadcasts that the rain had caused flooding in some areas. Some people had to be relocated to higher ground to be safe.

“Chop the onions finely, slice the garlic and ginger, and cut the chili into strips. Oh, and shred the potatoes. Finally, peel the cucumber.”

Sheng Fei was so busy that she didn’t mind Lu Ting’s help.

Lu Ting had no experience cutting onions, and soon his eyes were stinging. They turned red, and tears flowed uncontrollably. “Ah!”

Seeing this, Sheng Fei couldn’t help but laugh loudly. “How did you end up crying just from cutting vegetables?”

The man glared at her, but his red eyes lacked intimidation, especially with tear stains at the corners. “Why didn’t you warn me that this would be so eye-watering?”

Lu Ting’s eyes felt hot and uncomfortable like when he chopped onions.

“You didn’t ask, so how was I supposed to know you couldn’t cut them?”

She thought Lu Ting had cooked before and knew onions could be spicy, but she had no idea that Lu Ting had always just chopped things haphazardly before putting them in pot, never finely.

This time, Lu Ting was tricked. He forced himself to finish cutting and quickly went to wash his hands and face.

Sheng Fei shook her head, added the onions, ginger, and garlic to the pan, then tossed in the shredded potatoes and some water to stir-fry.

When Lu Ting returned to the kitchen, his eyes were still red, looking as if he had been wronged. Sheng Fei gloated at his misfortune, “You’re crying so miserably. If someone didn’t know better, they would think I bullied you.”

“Sheng Fei, I want to ask you something.”

Lu Ting decided to test Sheng Fei’s attitude. He was already done with the work and Sheng Fei wasn’t busy at the moment. She turned her head while adjusting the fan.

“Go ahead.”

With his short hair, deep and handsome features, sharp eyebrows and bright eyes, and sharp contours, the man was undeniably handsome. Sheng Fei naturally enjoyed looking at a handsome man like him. After all, it was pleasing to the eyes.

“I heard Sanya say that Xu Mingda brought you food. Did Zhang Qiang next door take you to the county clinic?”

Sheng Fei was momentarily taken aback but then thought it over. “That’s true. I brought pancakes to thank Xu Mingda and two pounds of pork to thank Zhang Qiang. After all, we’re in the same village. It’s normal to help each other out.”

Sheng Fei’s tone was casual, without any hesitation.

Lu Ting nodded and smiled slightly. “Next time you’re not feeling well, tell me. I’ll take you to the clinic.”
