- Chapter 299 - Storytelling
Initially, everyone thought the rainy season would soon come to an end, but after several days and nights of heavy rain, the flooding persisted.
The downpour blocked everyone’s way, with shallow puddles forming even by the doors.
Since Sheng Fei lived at a higher land, while the land on the other side of the village was lower, many villagers reported that their pig pens had been flooded. They said the village chief and the secretary had gone to rescue people.
At home, Sheng Fei and Lu Ting could only take care of the few children peacefully.
Sheng Fei had always been fond of stockpiling supplies. Their household had enough rice, flour, and cooking oil to last several months, so Sheng Fei didn’t feel much worried.
The heavy rain had caused schools in the area to suspend. Now some families that needed food had to send people from the village to buy supplies and deliver them door to door.
With the rain so heavy, walking outside was difficult, and there were many muddy pools and holes in the village. For those unfamiliar with the terrain, it was easy to fall into a pit, which could be dangerous. So they had to stay put for now.
During these days, Sheng Fei kept the children company at home. Although the children couldn’t go out to play and were somewhat reluctant, they enjoyed listening to Sheng Fei’s stories.
Lu Ting sat with the children, quietly listening to Sheng Fei as she narrated.
Sheng Fei knew that the children nowadays often listened to the elders in the village tell stories from the Four Great Classical Novels and were likely tired of them. Since the children had nowhere to play, she decided to tell them tales from “One Thousand and One Nights.”
She began by recounting a kingdom where the king had a peculiar habit of marrying a new queen every day and executing her the next day, only to marry another. This cycle continued.
However, one day, after the king married a woman, the woman told him stories. They spent the night sharing tales. Before the kind had heard enough, the rooster crowed, and the woman stopped telling stories.
The king was not yet satisfied. When he saw the woman stopped talking, he spared her life and requested that she continue her storytelling.
And so, day after day, year after year, the woman told countless stories, eventually touching the king’s heart.
Because of this, the king no longer executed her, and Sheng Fei narrated the stories from “One Thousand and One Nights” to the children one by one.
Lu Ting had never heard stories from his parents. When he was young, they neglected him and favored his older brother. Now Lu Ting genuinely wished they would tell him stories, so he joined Sheng Fei and the others in listening to her stories.
To his surprise, Sheng Fei’s stories flowed one after another and were especially attractive. Lu Ting focused intently on Sheng Fei’s storytelling with the children.
The six children sat together. Sheng Fei suppressed a smile. She realized that Lu Ting had a surprisingly cute side.
As Sheng Fei narrated, sometimes Lu Xiaowu would ask curious questions. Sheng Fei would then patiently explain to the children.
So during these days, when everyone felt bored after dinner, they would either weave baskets or sew shoe soles. The children would tidy up the house and clean the yard, making the home feel full of life.
“Sheng Fei, where did you hear these stories? I’ve never heard of One Thousand and One Nights before.”
