Chapter 67: Traffic Jams Occasionally Happen Even in Another World
***
After an unknown amount of time.
A bustle of noise, accompanied by enthusiastic vendor calls, woke Claire from her dream.
“Beer here—!”
“Fresh crystal cores, just arrived today, ladies and gentlemen, come take a look!”
“Need any agility potions or life potions? Agility potions, life potions, made by professional alchemists, guaranteed quality or ten times your money back!”
“Hey young man, want an apple? Oh my, what unusual clothes you’re wearing! Hey hey, why are you walking away so quickly!”
So noisy…
Claire hung her little head, rubbing her eyes sleepily. She was awake, but not fully.
What’s going on, did I transmigrate?
Ah, no, I was already in another world to begin with!
Ah damn, my legs are numb, and my lower back and hips are so sore… Slept too long in the same position.
By the way, didn’t I just have quite a dramatic dream…
Claire lifted her head, and felt considerably relieved seeing Lavendia was still there.
Lavendia had also fallen asleep, but woke up earlier than Claire.
She lowered the carriage curtain and turned to tell Claire: “We’re almost there.”
Claire immediately perked up: “That fast?”
“Not particularly fast.”
Lavendia frowned slightly, looking somewhat worried.
She said: “It’s almost time for the scheduled banquet, we might… be late.”
“Eh?”
Claire blinked in confusion: “Then shouldn’t we hurry?”
“Well…”
Claire suddenly realized something.
“Is it my imagination or… has the carriage actually stopped moving?”
Lavendia helplessly lifted the carriage curtain, gesturing for Claire to see for herself.
Claire leaned over, poking out her little head.
The scenery outside the carriage had changed at some point. Other-worldly cobblestone streets, brick houses of varying heights, vendors calling out their wares enthusiastically, all crowded into her view.
And more importantly — the bustling, shoulder-to-shoulder crowds.
They had barely passed through the city gates when the carriage became stuck in the narrow street. Surrounded by commoners coming and going in all directions, the carriage could barely move an inch.
Looking ahead, there were several more carriages, all similarly caught in a standstill.
In simple terms — they were stuck in traffic.
Completely stuck.
“Why are there so many people? What day is it?”
Just as Claire asked, a newspaper boy about 7 or 8 years old squeezed out of the crowd, cleverly holding up newspapers and approaching the carriage to sell them.
“Noble young ladies, would you like to buy a newspaper, would you like to buy a newspaper!”
Claire was completely confused and exchanged glances with Lavendia.
The newspaper boy followed the carriage on tiptoes, his words as sweet as if coated in honey.
“Please buy one, beautiful and kind ladies! Your carriage is so grand! And the horse too, I’ve never seen such a tall and large horse before!”
“You two ladies are clearly noble young ladies from a great family, you look so well-matched, sitting together like a painting!”
Claire tried to maintain her character, snorting coldly and raising her voice to say: “You don’t even know whose carriage this is, yet you dare to strike up a conversation?”
The newspaper boy grinned with a red face, still saying: “Please buy a newspaper!”
Meanwhile, Lavendia’s gaze silently swept over the newspaper boy’s entire appearance.
Worn clothes, covered in dust, but at least not barefoot, and seemingly uninjured.
A hardworking child.
Claire noticed Lavendia’s silence, so she said nothing more and took out several silver coins from her bag, holding them out.
This was like a windfall from heaven for the newspaper boy, his eyes opened wide: “You’re giving too much!”
Hmph hmph, can’t help it, after all I’m rich in this life.
Claire smiled and said one of the lines from This Life’s Must-Try Dialogue Rankings: “Keep the change!”
So satisfying.
“Ah, but in return, you need to tell me why it’s so lively here.”
The newspaper boy nodded vigorously, answering without hesitation: “Because today is Young Master Perin’s coming-of-age ceremony, everyone is celebrating spontaneously!”
“Spontaneously celebrating?” Claire blinked: “Is the Aldrich family that prestigious?”
“Yes yes!” The newspaper boy nodded even more vigorously: “After coming of age, Young Master Perin can join the Knight Order! Everyone believes Young Master Perin will definitely become the next Kingdom’s Chief Knight and drive the monsters back beyond the border!”
I see.
Claire clasped her hands together in apparent delight: “Eh— how amazing—”
Ah, maybe that reaction was a bit exaggerated, need to adjust it…
Lavendia looked at Claire, her eyes showing a hint of complex emotions.
However, it wasn’t because Claire’s reaction was too fake, but rather — she remembered the rumors among the maids about Claire’s unrequited love for Perin.
Future Chief Knight… is that an impressive position?
When hearing Perin’s name, Claire’s smile seemed to come from genuine feelings.
She looked… very happy.
Does she really like this person?
Lavendia lowered her eyes and touched her chest, falling into confused silence.
What’s this, there seems to be some sourness, some stuffiness in her chest.
Knight, knight…
If I could become the Chief Knight too…
Claire could never have imagined that her casual gesture would cause such a misunderstanding in Lavendia.
And Lavendia could never have guessed what Claire was actually smiling about.
It was actually because Claire remembered that in the game, it wasn’t Perin who became Chief Knight, but rather Lavendia herself.
Hehe, giving you mortals a little taste of female protagonist shock.
If someone says there’s no such thing as perfection in the world, Claire would raise both hands high and solemnly introduce our omnipotent Lavendia—
Ahem ahem, lost composure there.
“Kind ladies, here, this is your newspaper, have a wonderful day!”
Claire adjusted her expression, suppressing her smile, took the newspaper, and lowered the curtain amid the newspaper boy’s repeated thanks.
The newspaper’s main page wrote about the monster-slaying hero party’s triumphant return and their report to the king about their wilderness exploration results.
With monsters invading the borders, the Knight Order’s duty to protect home and country was beyond question.
The magic school Rochester would soon begin recruiting students again, to bolster forces protecting the country’s peace…
A group of civilians displaced by monster attacks had been properly settled, and the Aldrich family was willing to open their city to accept them and donate funds to the church…?
Lavendia suddenly snatched the newspaper away, reading this section word by word.
Would the donations have anything to do with the orphanage?
Claire carefully asked: “Sister, what’s wrong? You look terrible.”
Lavendia quickly finished reading that article praising the Aldrich family’s chivalrous spirit, but found no meaningful information.
She stared intensely at the Aldrich family crest on the newspaper — noble silver, depicting a sword symbolizing nobility and a shield protecting the kingdom.
Indeed different from the badge she found.
She sighed softly and put down the newspaper.
“It’s nothing.”
