Chapter 66: They Say People Go to the Cinema After Death

***

After their conversation ended, the carriage ride quickly became dull and boring.

Claire watched the scenery outside with Lavendia for a while, initially interested, but soon grew tired of it.

After leaving the mansion, they traveled through plains. Though the scenery was beautiful, it was somewhat monotonous.

As far as the eye could see, there were only repeating grass, mountains, and trees, nothing but green upon green.

Claire couldn’t help feeling disappointed.

She remembered that the original game had a battle system where you could level up by fighting slimes.

Finally leaving the mansion, she thought she’d finally get to experience something of another world, but after being out for so long, she’d only seen a flock of sheep grazing, with no monsters to broaden her horizons.

The system coldly remarked:『You couldn’t beat them even if you encountered any.』

“That’s true.”

『It’s mainly because this land is very peaceful. There are monster invasions at the borders, and the Knight Order frequently sets out to subjugate them.』

Monsters……

Claire leaned against the carriage window, resting on her arms, listlessly watching the clouds in the sky.

The sweet breeze lifted her bangs, gentle like a mother’s palm.

This game wasn’t without disasters.

There were monsters, the Knight Order, heroes, slimes, and even Demon Kings and dragons.

However, in the original work, these settings were rather peripheral.

They were elements that players could grind for attributes if they wanted to, but it didn’t matter if they didn’t.

After all, it was just clicking the mouse to use skills and watching slimes explode in place with PowerPoint-style effects, so it’s no wonder it felt unreal.

Moreover—

Thinking of this, Claire suddenly felt dejected and couldn’t help but let out a long sigh.

“Ah……”

— Moreover, in the end, those settings had nothing to do with me at all.

I’m just a poor NPC, a stereotypical minor character.

Designed to be inevitably trampled under the protagonist’s feet, a boring villainess.

The ceiling is set right there, no matter how much I struggle, there’s only this much screen time.

And no matter how hard I try, perhaps in the end, I still can’t escape the fate of being put on the stake……

Becoming a hero and embarking on an adventure… Though beautiful, but… it’s too distant.

It’s not a future I can imagine.

Hearing the sigh, Lavendia quietly looked over.

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing.”

Claire arranged her bangs, saying listlessly: “Just feeling… a bit bored.”

Lavendia nodded: “It will take a long time to arrive, indeed there’s nothing to do.”

That’s not the same kind of boredom, dear sister.

Suddenly curious about what the protagonist was thinking.

Claire became interested and asked in a casual tone: “Sister, what are your plans after returning from the ball?”

Lavendia answered honestly: “I don’t know.”

Claire turned her head, looking at Lavendia in her gallant riding outfit, and smiled:

“Young lady, seeing your extraordinary bearing and exceptional talent, have you considered becoming a hero, or a knight, or an incredibly powerful sword saint?”

“……?”

“If you like magic, you could also consider becoming a great mage?”

“Father also said, you’re a young lady of the Grendel family… Ah of course, I haven’t acknowledged you yet.”

Lavendia was puzzled and didn’t respond, only blinking in confusion.

While Claire turned her head back, resting on her arms again, staring blankly at the clouds.

She murmured: “As long as you want, all these professions are within your reach.”

“Whether it’s subjugating monsters or protecting the country, you can do it all.”

The carriage fell silent again, as Claire kept the remaining spoiler-related words in her heart.

……You don’t know yet, sister.

This world revolves around you, you can do whatever you want in the future, whatever you want, you’ll have it.

How nice, I also want to have all kinds of futures.

How nice, sister.

I will struggle until the last moment, but I don’t know if there’s a chance to rewrite the ending. While you will definitely walk towards a brighter future, right?

I really hope I’ll be in your future too.

Lavendia looked at Claire’s profile and fell silent as well.

She tried to imagine her own future following Claire’s topic, however, no matter how she tried, her mind remained blank.

Therefore, she remained silent for a long time, and finally repeated softly: “I don’t know.”

Speaking of things to do… currently, she could only think of revenge.

Revenge.

These two words carried too much darkness and pain behind them, like a heavy boulder blocking her path, cutting off all possibilities.

Making her unable to see anything else besides each step she takes.

Claire looked very sad, even somewhat sorrowful?

Her expression when sighing seemed as if she already knew her own ending, very unlike her.

When speaking of the word future, her eyes were clearly bright and sparkling, as if stars twinkled in her pupils, very vivid, jumping with vibrant yearning and anticipation.

While in Lavendia’s eyes, there was only emptiness.

Her pupils were clear as mirrors, able to reflect the sky and distant mountains, reflect Claire’s lively eyes, but couldn’t reflect her own future self.

Lavendia shook her head in confusion and said softly: “I can’t think about such distant matters yet.”

“Why?”

“Because I have other things to do. Things I must do… only after everything ends, can we talk about the future.”

“Is that so?”

Claire closed her eyes, curved her lips, and smiled silently.

“So we’re the same……”

The gentle breeze carried the fragrance of grass and flowers.

The horse galloped swiftly across the open plains, hooves clacking rhythmically, reminding one of the “anyway anyway” sound of a green train.

The carriage’s swaying remained gentle, not causing dizziness, but rather inducing sleep.

Claire, immersed in her thoughts, began to feel drowsy before long.

She no longer leaned against the window, but sat properly back on the cushion, her head nodding up and down, consciousness gradually becoming blurry.

Lavendia said softly: “Take a rest, Young Lady Claire.”

“Mm. Good afternoon……”

At this point, sleep comes first.

Claire quietly closed her eyes.

Lavendia left her original position and carefully sat on the same side as Claire.

Claire’s breathing gradually became even, her head tilted, naturally resting on Lavendia’s shoulder.

Having experienced this before when sleeping during previous etiquette lessons, there was some familiarity to it.

Lavendia’s shoulder height was just right for Claire to lean on. Not only was it comfortable, but she could also smell a hint of her sister’s warm fragrance from her neck.

In this cold other world, this completely messed up future, this corporate slave-like exhausting villainess role-playing life, only sister’s shoulder remained consistently warm.

Claire twisted her body in her half-asleep state, finding a more comfortable angle, giggling twice, acting silly.

Then, she felt her consciousness gradually melting into sugar water.

In the warm sunlight, gentle breeze, and slight swaying of the carriage, Lavendia also gradually relaxed.

Listening to Claire’s peaceful breathing, everything seemed to become quiet. Some unsolvable questions about the future seemed like they could be temporarily set aside.

At least now, at least at this moment.

They could both relax a little.

“Good afternoon, Claire.”

Lavendia gently nuzzled Claire’s soft hair on top of her head with her cheek.

She closed her eyes, cuddling with Claire’s body, and took a nap together with her.

Claire had a dream.

In the dream, Lavendia really became a hero, became a sword saint, became a great mage.

Claire felt like she was watching a movie. It reminded her of a saying… what was it?

“People go to the cinema after death.”

In the movie frame, Lavendia led the hero team forward, lit bonfires in front of caves, and made skewers from hunted monsters.

Then, the scene changed, Lavendia wore armor, raised the golden holy sword high, led the Knight Order’s army, and slayed the wave-like surging monsters one by one.

She took out countless magic scrolls, softly chanted spells, raised the elegant staff, summoned light and fire descending from the sky, leaving all evil and shadows nowhere to hide.

Lavendia walked on her own path.

NPCs with unclear faces, common people, and several male protagonists from the game, though their faces were equally blurry, you could feel their specialness.

Like moths attracted to flames, or followers pursuing their deity, they all followed Lavendia, walking towards her direction.

While Claire in the dream sat outside the frame, sat in front of the movie screen. The vast cinema was so empty, with only her alone.

She clearly knew that everything in the movie would have nothing to do with her, couldn’t help but lower her eyes, smiling sadly and self-mockingly.

At this moment, Lavendia in the screen suddenly raised her head.

Her gaze seemed able to penetrate the movie screen, pierce through the unspeakable mist and reality, looking straight into Claire’s eyes.

She ignored all those who followed her, and stepped straight towards the direction of the movie lens.

— As if walking towards Claire’s direction.
