Chapter 61: No Gossip Allowed!
***
The two young ladies went to the side entrance to take their carriage. The maids continued their routine cleaning work in the main hall.
However, not long after, they suddenly heard Young Lady Claire’s voice: “What, what, what is this!”
Very panicked, very brief, as if something had happened.
Following that were the sounds of water and something falling over.
They looked at each other and hurried over.
Leading them was Beth, the oldest maid among the gossip trio.
This person had a lively personality and loved gossiping the most, always rushing to be first in line for drama, even after being scolded by Anna.
Unfortunately, her timing for rushing over this time was not good.
———
“…Come to my room, I’ll find another dress for you to wear!”
After speaking, Claire grabbed Lavendia’s hand and turned to run.
The thought was simple, they were in a hurry.
They didn’t know how far the destination was or how fast the carriage would be here, but the maid did say they could depart now.
If they delayed too long and arrived when everyone had finished eating, Lavendia wouldn’t make her stunning entrance, wouldn’t that be a severe deviation from the plot that would get her electrocuted to death by the system!
However, reality proved that one should never chase and run around in corridors, regardless of which world.
Claire had barely run two steps when a maid suddenly appeared from around the corner, about to crash right into her.
Claire quickly slammed on the brakes! Lavendia stopped just in time too.
But due to momentum, Claire’s arm was still hit hard by the maid. And simultaneously suffered the impact of two soft cotton candy-like things—
So, so soft.
Thanks for the treat. …Wait, no!
Having just suffered a threatening electric shock from the system and dealing with a splitting headache debuff, now getting crashed into by a maid while walking, what kind of day was this?
Claire was already angry, and even the soft sensation wasn’t enough to calm this rage!
She angrily said to the maid in front of her: “Move aside, don’t block the way! Are you blind?!”
Beth was terrified out of her wits: “Y-Young Lady Claire, I’m so sorry!!”
She carefully raised her head to peek, first trembling at Claire’s gloomy expression. Then seeing the completely soaked Lavendia behind Claire, she became even more flustered.
“Young Lady Lavendia, your clothes…!?”
“Shut up! No questions, no talking, it’s none of your business!”
Claire hated people who gossiped behind backs, and now she had no patience to explain to her.
“Right now, immediately, go get me several clean bath towels and bring them to my room!”
“Y-yes!”
“No extra talking!”
Beth tightly shut her mouth and left.
The next to join the scene were — the other two members of the maid gossip trio, Becky and Betty.
Like Beth, they both rushed over excitedly, made emergency stops, bowed and apologized, then were stunned by Lavendia’s ruined dress and retreated to the side.
Lily was the last maid to arrive, she had heard the commotion at the same time as the others.
Though not knowing what happened, Lily guessed water had been spilled somewhere, so she went to get a mop first.
This child seemed relatively well-behaved.
Claire’s expression softened slightly and asked: “Did Miss Aurora come to the mansion today?”
“N-no, Young Lady Claire. Miss Aurora hasn’t come today.”
Lily timidly answered: “May I ask what happened…?”
Claire coughed lightly: “Don’t ask, now go get some of my usual dresses for sister to change into.”
“Y-yes.”
“Becky go too, and Betty… go prepare some hot tea to warm sister up.”
“Also call others to come clean the corridor, hurry up, everyone run!”
Becky and Betty lowered their heads in agreement, and silently exchanged glances, attempting to secretly communicate within the team.
Claire frowned, swiftly pointing her finger at them: “Shut up!”
“No talking, no discussions! If you gossip again, I’ll tie your tongues together!”
“We-we’re very sorry!”
“What are you waiting for!”
“Yes!”
Claire stood with hands on her hips, fiercely assigning work to the maids.
Lavendia’s gaze discreetly swept across these maids’ faces one by one, quickly reaching a conclusion:
Anna wasn’t here.
Usually inseparable from Claire, Anna would personally attend to Claire wherever she went.
This morning when Claire was grooming, she was still in the room. Then she disappeared.
When Lavendia took the comb from Anna’s hand, that poisonous, fierce, unwilling look could still clearly appear before her eyes.
It seems the culprit was already clear as day.
After leaving Claire’s room, Anna had set up this water-splashing trap in the corridor, planning to ruin Lavendia’s dress…
Though not knowing how the trap was made, she probably hadn’t expected Claire would be walking hand in hand with Lavendia.
Judging from this angle, it should indeed prove that Claire knew nothing about Anna’s actions.
The panic and anxiety Claire showed didn’t seem like acting. This was also the first time she showed no avoidance or evasion when facing pressure from Lavendia…
However, that earlier statement: “I will definitely get you to attend the banquet!” was a bit strange.
Though they were kind words, for some reason they sounded very angry, fierce, like saying “just you wait, I’ll definitely deal with you.”
Did Anna’s actions cause her trouble too?
Her complexion had become quite bad.
Was she scared when questioned earlier, or did she hit her head when she fell?
Lavendia was a bit worried.
“…Phew!”
“Alright sister, let’s hurry.”
After arranging the maids, Claire took Lavendia’s ice-cold hand again.
They passed through the corridor, up the stairs, to Claire’s room.
Because the splashed water was very cold, Lavendia’s already low body temperature hand was now even more freezing cold without any warmth.
In comparison, Claire’s hand felt much warmer, like a small heater.
The cold made Lavendia’s mind very clear.
She lowered her eyes, gently rubbing Claire’s fingers, falling into self-reflection.
She was indeed angry.
But not at Anna, or this trap.
Her anger was more directed at herself.
Those two seconds of stopped time just now, though not enough for her to make any counter-measures, was more than sufficient if she only wanted to dodge to the side.
If it was the previous Lavendia, needless to say, she definitely would have dodged first.
Not only dodge, she would definitely have thought: this must be Claire’s planned scheme.
Planning to drench someone else, but ending up getting drenched herself, that would be exactly lifting a rock only to drop it on one’s own feet.
For a bad child full of evil thoughts who’s always plotting to harm others, wouldn’t that be exactly what they deserve?
However, at that moment, Lavendia only had one thought in her mind, which was— to push her away, to protect her.
If one of the two had to get soaked, she felt it could be herself, but not Claire.
How did it come to this?
Oh Lavendia, Lavendia.
You’ve actually, unknowingly, been shaken by Claire to such an extent?
She couldn’t help but be angry at her own instinctive reaction.
Because even now, completely soaked from stepping into the trap, she still felt that it was so good Claire’s beautiful dress hadn’t gotten wet.
Her dress has little stars, very pretty.
Her hair was helped brushed by Lavendia, and tied with cute elaborate ribbons.
And her hand.
Lavendia looked at Claire’s delicate white hand, silently sighing.
Her hand…
Always being so warm like this, is just fine.
————————————
“Alright, anyway, take it off!”
Claire’s cheeks were red as she stood with hands on her hips, not daring to look directly at Lavendia.
Lavendia blinked, her expression quite innocent.
“Take off…?”
